An important tool in the field of metamaterials is the extraction of effective material parameters from simulated or measured scattering parameters of a sample. Here we discuss a retrieval method for thin-film structures that can be approximated by a two-dimensional scattering sheet. We determine the effective sheet conductivity from the scattering parameters and we point out the importance of the magnetic sheet current to avoid an overdetermined inversion problem. Subsequently, we present two applications of the sheet retrieval method. First, we determine the effective sheet conductivity of thin silver films and we compare the resulting conductivities with the sheet conductivity of graphene. Second, we apply the method to a cut-wire metamaterial with an electric dipole resonance. The method is valid for thin-film structures such as two-dimensional metamaterials and frequency-selective surfaces and can be easily generalized for anisotropic or chiral media.
We present the blueprint for a novel negative-index metamaterial. This structure is fabricated via three-dimensional two-photon direct laser writing and silver shadow evaporation. The comparison of measured linear optical spectra with theory shows good agreement and reveals a negative real part of the refractive index at around 3.85 micrometer wavelength - despite the fact that the metamaterial structure is bi-anisotropic due to the lack of inversion symmetry along its surface normal.
Hyperbolic metamaterials show exceptional optical properties, such as near-perfect broadband absorption, due to their geometrically-engineered optical anisotropy. Many of their proposed applications, such as thermophotovoltaics or radiative cooling, require high-temperature stability. In this work we examine Ag/a-Si multilayers as a model system for the thermal stability of hyperbolic metamaterials. Using a combination of nanotomography, finite element simulations and optical spectroscopy, we map the thermal and optical instability of the metamaterials. Although the thermal instability initiat…
We investigate the influence of different metals on the electromagnetic response of fishnet metamaterials in the optical regime. We found, instead of using a Drude model, metals with a dielectric function from experimentally measured data should be applied to correctly predict the behavior of optical metamaterials. Through comparison of the performance for fishnet metamaterials made with different metals (i.e., gold, copper, and silver), we found silver is the best choice for the metallic parts compared to other metals, because silver allows for the strongest negative-permeability resonance and…
Metamaterials-or artificial electromagnetic materials-can create media with properties unattainable in nature, but mitigating dissipation is a key challenge for their further development. Here, we demonstrate a low-loss metamaterial by exploiting dark bound states in dielectric inclusions coupled to the external waves by small nonresonant metallic antennas. We experimentally demonstrate a dispersion-engineered metamaterial based on a meta-atom made from alumina, and we show that its resonance has a much larger quality factor than metal-based meta-atoms. Finally, we show that our dielectric met…
Resonant metamaterials usually exhibit substantial dispersion, which is considered a shortcoming for many applications. Here we take advantage of the ability to tailor the dispersive response of a metamaterial introducing a new method of group-velocity dispersion compensation in telecommunication systems. The method consists of stacking a number of highly dispersive sheet metamaterials and is capable of compensating the dispersion of optical fibers with either negative or positive group-velocity dispersion coefficients. We demonstrate that the phase-engineered metamaterial can provide strong g…
Near-infrared epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metamaterial slabs based on silver-germanium (Ag-Ge) multilayers are experimentally demonstrated. Transmission, reflection and absorption spectra are characterized and used to determine the complex refractive indices and the effective permittivities of the ENZ metamaterial slabs, which match the results obtained from both the numerical simulations and the optical nonlocalities analysis. A rapid post-annealing process is used to reduce the collision frequency of silver and therefore decrease the optical absorption loss of multilayer metamaterial slabs. Furt…
We further miniaturize a recently established silver-based negative-index metamaterial design. By comparing transmittance, reflectance and phase-sensitive time-of-flight experiments to theory, we infer a real part of the refractive index of -0.6 at 780 nm wavelength -- which is visible in the laboratory.
We propose a thermoelectric device that can produce a thermal gradient even in a uniform-temperature environment. We introduced a metamaterial absorber (MA), which comprised a transparent calcium fluoride layer sandwiched between a silver mirror layer and silver microdisk arrays, at one end of a thermoelectric device made of bismuth antimony telluride. The heating efficiencies of the MA and opposite electrodes of the device were unbalanced; consequently, the Seebeck effect was induced, resulting in electricity generation. We fabricated the MA on a copper electrode loaded on a thermoelectric de…
In the metamaterial with hyperbolic dispersion (an array of silver nanowires in alumina membrane) we have observed six-fold reduction of the emission life-time of dye deposited onto the metamaterials surface. This serves as the evidence of the earlier predicted high density of photonic states in hyperbolic metamaterials.
We verify the extraordinary transmission enhancement and collimation induced by the material loss in anisotropic near-zero permittivity (ENZ) metamaterials, and reveal the physical mechanism of this exotic electromagnetic phenomenon via the iso-frequency contour (IFC) analysis. In addition, we demonstrate the possibility in realization of such loss enhanced transmission of Gaussian beam in realistic silver-germanium multilayered structures by applying full-wave numerical simulations.
A well-established, silver fishnet design has been further miniaturized to function as a negative-index material at the shortest wavelength to date. By studying the transmittance, reflectance, and corresponding numerical simulations of the sample, we report in this paper a negative refractive index of -0.25 at the yellow-light wavelength of 580 nm.
We study a highly controllable perfect plasmonic absorber -- a thin metamaterial layer which possess balanced electric and magnetic responses in some frequency range. We show that this regime is compatible with both metal-backed variant of the structure or its semitransparent variant. This regime can be implemented in a prospective thin-film photovoltaic cell with negligible parasitic losses.
Volumes of sub-wavelength electromagnetic elements can act like homogeneous materials: metamaterials. In analogy, sheets of optical elements such as prisms can act ray-optically like homogeneous sheet materials. In this sense, such sheets can be considered to be metamaterials for light rays (METATOYs). METATOYs realize new and unusual transformations of the directions of transmitted light rays. We study here, in the ray-optics and scalar-wave limits, the wave-optical analog of such transformations, and we show that such an analog does not always exist. Perhaps, this is the reason why many of t…
Acoustic waves propagation of in composite of water with embedded double-layered silicone resin/silver rods is considered. Approximate values of effective dynamical constitutive parameters are obtained. Frequency ranges of simultaneous negative constitutive parameters are found. Localized surface states on the interface between metamaterial and "normal" material are found. Doppler effect in metamaterial is considered. Presence of anomalous modes are shown.
We report on design and fabrication of nano-composite metal-dielectric thin film coatings with high reflectance asymmetries. Applying basic dispersion engineering principles to model a broadband and large reflectance asymmetry, we obtain a model dielectric function for the metamaterial film, closely resembling the effective permittivity of disordered metal-dielectric nano-composites. Coatings realized using disordered nanocrystalline silver films deposited on glass substrates confirm the theoretical predictions, exhibiting symmetric transmittance, large reflectance asymmetries and a unique fla…
We introduce a simple theoretical model that describes the interaction of light with optical metamaterials in terms of interfering optical plane waves. In this model, a metamaterial is considered to consist of planar arrays of densely packed nanoparticles. In the analysis, each such array reduces to an infinitely thin homogeneous sheet. The transmission and reflection coefficients of this sheet are found to be equal to those of an isolated nanoparticle array and, therefore, they are easy to evaluate numerically for arbitrary shapes and arrangements of the particles. The presented theory enable…
We show that surface-plasmon polaritons excited in negative permittivity metamaterials having shallow periodic surface corrugation profiles can be explored to push the absorption of single and continuous sheets of graphene up to 100%. In the relaxation regime, the position of the plasmonic resonances of the hybrid system is determined by the plasma frequency of the metamaterial, allowing the frequency range for enhanced absorption to be set without the need of engineering graphene.
Over the past two decades, metamaterials have led to an increasing number of biosensing and nanophotonic applications due to the possibility of a careful control of light propagating through subwavelength features. Chiral nanostructures (characterized by the absence of any mirror symmetry), in particular, give rise to unique chiro-optical properties such as circular dichroism and optical activity. Here, we present a gyroid optical metamaterial with a periodicity of 65 nm exhibiting a strong circular dichroism at visible wavelengths. Our bottom-up approach, based on metallic replication of the …
The search for alternative plasmonic materials with improved optical properties over the traditional materials like silver and gold could ultimately lead to the long-awaited, real-life applications of plasmonic devices and metamaterials. In this work, we show that titanium nitride could perform as an alternative plasmonic material in the visible wavelength range. We evaluate the performances of various plasmonic and metamaterial structures with titanium nitride as a plasmonic component and show that transformation-optics devices and an important class of metamaterials with hyperbolic dispersio…
We investigate the wave propagation in the anisotropic metamaterial with single-sheeted hyperboloid dispersion relation. Based on boundary conditions and dispersion relations, we find that the opposite amphoteric refraction, such that E- (or H-) polarized waves are positively refracted whereas H- (or E-) polarized waves are negatively refracted, can occur at the interface associated with the anisotropic metamaterial. Under a certain condition, both E- and H-polarized waves can exhibit the same single-sheeted hyperboloid or straight dispersion relation, while the two polarized waves exhibit dif…
In this paper we theoretically show that the Raman scattering by a core-shell micron or submicron particle with epsilon-near-zero metamaterial shell and silica spherical or cylindrical core can combine useful features of cavity-enhanced and surface-enhanced Raman scattering. The cavity resonance together with the plasmon resonance lead to the giant enhancement of the field inside the metashell which is performed as a layer of silver or gold nanoparticles and is penetrable for molecules to be detected. This approach results in the significant increase of both effective volume in which molecules…
The race to engineering metamaterials comprising of a negative refractive index in the optical range has been fueled by the realization of negative index materials for GHz frequencies six years ago. Sheer miniaturization of the GHz resonant structures is one approach. Alternative designs make use of localized plasmon resonant metal nanoparticles or nanoholes in metal films. Following this approach, a negative refractive index has been realized in the optical range very recently. We review these recent results and summarize how to unambiguously retrieve the effective refractive index of thin la…
Recent metamaterial (MM) research faces several problems when using metal-based plasmonic components as building blocks for MMs. The use of conventional metals for MMs is limited by several factors: metals such as gold and silver have high losses in the visible and near-infrared (NIR) ranges and very large negative real permittivity values, and in addition, their optical properties cannot be tuned. These issues that put severe constraints on the device applications of MMs could be overcome if semiconductors are used as plasmonic materials instead of metals. Heavily doped, wide bandgap oxide se…
We demonstrate analytically and numerically that the dispersive Dirac cone emulating an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) behavior is a universal property within a family of plasmonic crystals consisting of two-dimensional (2D) metals. Our starting point is a periodic array of 2D metallic sheets embedded in an inhomogeneous and anisotropic dielectric host that allows for propagation of transverse-magnetic (TM) polarized waves. By invoking a systematic bifurcation argument for arbitrary dielectric profiles in one spatial dimension, we show how TM Bloch waves experience an effective dielectric function th…
Coated and multicoated cylinder systems constitute an appealing metamaterial category, as they allow a very rich and highly tunable response, resulting from the interplay of the many different geometrical and material parameters involved. Here we derive and propose an effective medium approach for the detailed description and analysis of the electromagnetic wave propagation in such systems. In particular, we investigate infinitely-long multilayered cylinders with additional electric and magnetic surface conductivities at each interface. Our effective medium approach is based on the well known …
We theoretically investigate the electromagnetic response of a novel class of multi-layered metamaterials obtained by alternating graphene sheets and dielectric layers, the whole structure not exhibiting a plane of reflection symmetry along the stacking direction. We show that the electromagnetic response of the structure is characterized by a magneto-electric coupling described by an effective chiral parameter. Exploiting the intrinsic tunability of the graphene-light coupling, we prove that one can tune both the dielectric and the chiral electromagnetic response by varying the graphene chemi…
Materials showing electromagnetic properties that are not attainable in naturally occurring media, the so called metamaterials, have been lately, and still are, among the most active fields in optical and materials physics and engineering. Among those properties, one of the most attractive is the sub-diffraction resolving capability predicted for media having index of refraction of -1. Here we propose a fully 3D, isotropic metamaterial with strong electric and magnetic responses in the optical regime, based on spherical metallo-dielectric core-shell nanospheres. The magnetic response stems fro…
Metamaterials are artificial composite materials that, by virtue of their microstructure, exhibit properties not exhibited by their component materials. Much excitement has been generated by negatively refracting metamaterials, typically consisting of coupled, metallic, subwavelength elements that simulate electric and magnetic dipoles, because of their unusual ability to manipulate visible light, infrared waves and microwaves. In such a metamaterial, an electromagnetic wave propagates so that the direction of its energy flow is opposed to its phase velocity, a condition captured by the real p…
Optical materials with vanishing dielectric permittivity, known as epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials, have been shown to possess enhanced nonlinear optical responses in their ENZ region. These strong nonlinear optical properties have been firmly established in homogeneous materials; however, it is as of yet unclear whether metamaterials with effective optical parameters can exhibit a similar enhancement. Here, we probe an optical ENZ metamaterial composed of a subwavelength periodic stack of alternating Ag and SiO$_2$ layers and measure a nonlinear refractive index $n_2 = (1.2 \pm 0.1) \times …
A hybrid metal-graphene metamaterial (MM) is reported to achieve the active control of the broadband plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) in THz region. The unit cell consists of one cut wire (CW), four U-shape resonators (USRs) and monolayer graphene sheets under the USRs. Via near-field coupling, broadband PIT can be produced through the interference between different modes. Based on different arrangements of graphene positions, not only can we achieve electrically switching the amplitude of broadband PIT, but also can realize modulating the bandwidth of the transparent window. Simultaneously,…
Graphene exhibits unique material properties and in electromagnetic wave technology, it raises the prospect of devices miniaturized down to the atomic length scale. Here we study split-ring resonator metamaterials made from graphene and we compare them to gold-based metamaterials. We find that graphene's huge reactive response derived from its large kinetic inductance allows for deeply subwavelength resonances, although its resonance strength is reduced due to higher dissipative loss damping and smaller dipole coupling. Nevertheless, tightly stacked graphene rings may provide for negative perm…
Hyperbolic metamaterials are materials in which at least one principal dielectric constant is negative. We describe the refractive index surface, and the resulting refraction effects, for a biaxial hyperbolic metamaterial, with principal dielectric constants $ε_1<0$, $0<ε_2\neqε_3$. In this general case the two sheets of the index surface intersect forming conical singularities. We derive the ray description of conical refraction in these materials, and show that it is topologically and quantitatively distinct from conical refraction in a conventional biaxial material. We also develop a wave o…
Electromagnetic waves impinging on three-dimensional helical metallic metamaterials have been shown to exhibit chiral effects of large magnitude both theoretically and in experimental realizations. Chirality here describes different responses of scatterers, materials, or metamaterials to left and right circularly polarized electromagnetic waves. These differences can be quantified in terms of electromagnetic chirality measures. In this work we consider the optimal design of thin metallic free-form nanowires that possess measures of electromagnetic chirality as large as fundamentally possible. …
We describe a novel artificial dielectric material which has applications at millimetre and submillimetre wavelengths. The material is manufactured from layers of metal mesh patterned onto thin polypropylene sheets which are then bonded together using a hot pressing process to provide planar rugged discs which can be reliably cycled to cryogenic temperatures. The refractive index of this material can be tuned by adjusting the geometry and spacing of the metal-mesh layers. We demonstrate its usage by designing and characterising a broadband anti-reflection coating for a Z-cut crystalline Quartz…
This article proposes a novel analytical model for the anisotropic multi-layer structures containing magnetically biased graphene sheets. The multi-layer structure is composed of various magnetic materials. An external magnetic field is applied, normal to the structure surface. Each graphene sheet, with an anisotropic conductivity tensor, has been sandwiched between two adjacent magnetic materials. Our model is used to find the dispersion relation of the structure. Now, obtaining plasmonic features of the structure, such as the effective index and propagation loss is straightforward. Four exem…
The development of metamaterials, data processing circuits and sensors for the visible and UV parts of the spectrum is hampered by the lack of low-loss media supporting plasmonic excitations and drives the intense search for plasmonic materials beyond noble metals. By studying plasmonic nanostructures fabricated on the surface of topological insulator $\mbox{Bi}_{1.5}\mbox{Sb}_{0.5}\mbox{Te}_{1.8}\mbox{Se}_{1.2}$ we found that it is orders of magnitude better plasmonic material than gold and silver in the blue-UV range. Metamaterial fabricated from $\mbox{Bi}_{1.5}\mbox{Sb}_{0.5}\mbox{Te}_{1.8…
The efficient amplification and lasing of electromagnetic radiation at terahertz (THz) frequencies is a non-trivial task achieved mainly by quantum cascade laser configurations with limited tunability and narrowband functionality. There is a strong need of compact and efficient THz electromagnetic sources with reconfigurable operation in a broad frequency range. Photoexcited graphene can act as the gain medium to produce coherent radiation at low THz frequencies but its response is very weak due to its ultrathin thickness. In this work, we demonstrate an alternative design to achieve efficient…
Complete control of electromagnetic fields requires particles that exhibit bianisotropic constituent parameters (i.e. permittivity, permeability, and chirality). Here, methods to analyze and synthesize two-dimensional, bianisotropic metamaterials (metasurfaces) are presented. First, closed-form expressions are derived relating the reflection and transmission coefficients of a general bianisotropic metasurface to its constituent surface parameters. Next, a systematic method to design bianisotropic metasurfaces is presented. It is analytically shown that cascading anisotropic, patterned metallic…
A subcell technique for calculation of optical properties of graphene with the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is presented. The technique takes into account the surface conductivity of graphene which allows the correct calculation of its dispersive response for arbitrarily polarized incident waves interacting with the graphene. The developed technique is verified for a planar graphene sheet configuration against the exact analytical solution. Based on the same test case scenario, we also show that the subcell technique demonstrates a superior accuracy and numerical efficiency with …
The perfect absorption of light in subwavelength thickness layers generally relies on exotic materials, metamaterials or thick metallic gratings. Here we demonstrate that total light absorption can be achieved in ultra-thin gratings composed of conventional materials, including relatively weakly-absorbing semiconductors, which are compatible with optoelectronic applications such as photodetectors and optical modulators. We fabricate a 41 nm thick antimony sulphide grating structure that has a measured absorptance of A = 99.3% at a visible wavelength of 591 nm, in excellent agreement with theor…
Transparent conducting oxides (TCO) are emerging as possible alternative constituent materials to replace noble metals such as silver and gold for low-loss plasmonic and metamaterial (MMs) applications in the near infrared (NIR) regime. The optical characteristics of TCOs have been studied to evaluate the functionalities and potential of these materials as metal substitutes in plasmonic and MM devices, even apart from their usual use as electrode materials. However, patterning TCOs at the nanoscale, which is necessary for plasmonic and MM devices, is not well-studied. This paper investigates n…
Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites have emerged as very promising materials for photonic applications, thanks to the great synthetic versatility that allows to tune their optical properties. In the two-dimensional (2D) crystalline form, these materials behave as multiple quantum-well heterostructures with stable excitonic resonances up to room temperature. In this work strong light-matter coupling in 2D perovskite single-crystal flakes is observed, and the polarization-dependent exciton-polariton response is used to disclose new excitonic features. For the first time, an out-of-plane compone…
