This paper considers the inverse boundary value problem for the equation $\nabla\cdot(σ\nabla u+a|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u)=0$. We give a procedure for the recovery of the coefficients $σ$ and $a$ from the corresponding Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, under suitable regularity and ellipticity assumptions.
In this paper we aim to show continuous differentiability of weak solutions to a one-Laplace system perturbed by $p$-Laplacian with $1<p<\infty$. The main difficulty on this equation is that uniform ellipticity breaks near a facet, the place where a gradient vanishes. We would like to prove that derivatives of weak solutions are continuous even across the facets. This is possible by estimating Hölder continuity of Jacobian matrices multiplied with its modulus truncated near zero. To show this estimate, we consider an approximated system, and use standard methods including De Giorgi's truncatio…
We consider a one-Laplace equation perturbed by $p$-Laplacian with $1<p<\infty$. We prove that a weak solution is continuously differentiable ($C^{1}$) if it is convex. Note that similar result fails to hold for the unperturbed one-Laplace equation. The main difficulty is to show $C^{1}$-regularity of the solution at the boundary of a facet where the gradient of the solution vanishes. For this purpose we blow-up the solution and prove that its limit is a constant function by establishing a Liouville-type result, which is proved by showing a strong maximum principle. Our argument is rather elem…
We study the asymptotic behavior of positive groundstate solutions to the quasilinear elliptic equation \begin{equation} -Δ_{p} u + \varepsilon u^{p-1} - u^{q-1} +u^{\mathit{l}-1} = 0 \qquad \text{in} \quad \mathbb{R}^{N}, \end{equation} where $1<p<N $, $p<q<l<+\infty$ and $\varepsilon> 0 $ is a small parameter. For $\varepsilon\rightarrow 0$, we give a characterisation of asymptotic regimes as a function of the parameters $q$, $l$ and $N$. In particular, we show that the behavior of the groundstates is sensitive to whether $q$ is less than, equal to, or greater than the critical Sobolev expon…
By using Duhamel's formula, we prove sharp two-sided estimates for the heat kernel of spectral fractional Laplacian with time-dependent gradient perturbation in bounded $C^{1,1}$ domains. Moreover, we also obtain gradient estimate as well as Hölder continuity of the gradient of the heat kernel.
The Green function of the fractional Laplacian of the differential order bigger than one and the Green function of its gradient perturbations are comparable for bounded smooth multidimensional open sets if the drift function is in an appropriate Kato class.
This paper is devoted to multi-parameter eigenvalue problems for perturbed $p$-Laplacians, modelling travelling waves for a class of non-linear evolution PDE. Dispersion relations between the eigen-para-meters, the existence of eigenvectors and positive eigenvectors, variational principles for eigenvalues of perturbed $p$-Laplacians and constructing analytical solutions are the main subject of this paper. Besides the $p$-Laplacian-like eigenvalue problems we also deal with new and non-standard eigenvalue problems, which can not be solved by the methods used in nonlinear eigenvalue problems for…
In this paper we study the self-adjoint Krein-von Neumann realization $A_K$ of the perturbed Laplacian $-Δ+V$ in a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$. We provide an explicit and self-contained description of the domain of $A_K$ in terms of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary traces, and we establish a Weyl asymptotic formula for the eigenvalues of $A_K$.
We consider the p-Laplacian in R^d perturbed by a weakly coupled potential. We calculate the asymptotic expansions of the lowest eigenvalue of such an operator in the weak coupling limit separately for p>d and p=d and discuss the connection with Sobolev interpolation inequalities.
Local and global properties of minimal solutions for the heat equation generated by the Dirichlet fractional Laplacian negatively perturbed by Hardy's potentials on open subsets of $\R^d$ are analyzed. As a byproduct we obtain instantaneous blow-up of nonnegative solutions in the supercritical case.
In this work we consider the homogeneous Neumann eigenvalue problem for the Laplacian on a bounded Lipschitz domain and a singular perturbation of it, which consists in prescribing zero Dirichlet boundary conditions on a small subset of the boundary. We first describe the sharp asymptotic behaviour of a perturbed eigenvalue, in the case in which it is converging to a simple eigenvalue of the limit Neumann problem. The first term in the asymptotic expansion turns out to depend on the Sobolev capacity of the subset where the perturbed eigenfunction is vanishing. Then we focus on the case of Diri…
In the present paper we introduce the perturbed two-dimensional Robin bi-Laplacian in the exterior of a bounded simply-connected $C^2$-smooth open set. The considered perturbation is of lower order and corresponds to tension. We prove that the essential spectrum of this operator coincides with the positive semi-axis and that the negative discrete spectrum is non-empty if, and only if, the boundary parameter is negative. As the main result, we obtain an isoperimetric inequality for the lowest eigenvalue of such a perturbed Robin bi-Laplacian with a negative boundary parameter in the exterior of…
In this paper, first we study existence results for a linearly perturbed elliptic problem driven by the fractional Laplacian. Then, we show a multiplicity result when the perturbation parameter is close to the eigenvalues. This latter result is obtained by exploiting the topological structure of the sublevels of the associated functional, which permits to apply a critical point theorem of mixed nature due to Marino and Saccon.
We study a singularly perturbed problem related to infinity Laplacian operator with prescribed boundary values in a region. We prove that solutions are locally (uniformly) Lipschitz continuous, they grow as a linear function, are strongly non-degenerate and have porous level surfaces. Moreover, for some restricted cases we show the finiteness of the (n-1)-dimensional Hausdorff measure of level sets. The analysis of the asymptotic limits is carried out as well.
We study spectral properties for $H_{K,Ω}$, the Krein--von Neumann extension of the perturbed Laplacian $-Δ+V$ defined on $C^\infty_0(Ω)$, where $V$ is measurable, bounded and nonnegative, in a bounded open set $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ belonging to a class of nonsmooth domains which contains all convex domains, along with all domains of class $C^{1,r}$, $r>1/2$. In particular, in the aforementioned context we establish the Weyl asymptotic formula \[ #\{j\in\mathbb{N} | λ_{K,Ω,j}\leqλ\} = (2π)^{-n} v_n |Ω| λ^{n/2}+O\big(λ^{(n-(1/2))/2}\big) {as} λ\to\infty, \] where $v_n=π^{n/2}/ Γ((n/2)+1)$ deno…
This paper deals with the following nonlinear perturbed fractional Laplacian equation $$(-Δ)^s u = K(|y'|,y'')u^{\frac{N+2s}{N-2s}\pmε},\,\,u>0,\,\,u\in D^{1,s}(\mathbb{R}^N),$$ where $0<s<1, N\geq 4,$ $(y',y'')\in \mathbb{R}^2\times \mathbb{R}^{N-2},$ $ε>0$ is a small parameter and $K(y)$ is nonnegative and bounded. By combining a finite reduction argument and local Pohozaev type of identities, we prove that if $N\geq 4,\max\{\frac{N+1-\sqrt{N^{2}-2N+9}}{4},\frac{3-\sqrt{N^{2}-6N+13}}{2}\}<s<1$ and $K(r,y'')$ has a stable critical point $(r_0, y_0'')$ with $r_0>0$ and $K(r_0, y_0'')>0,$ then …
It is widely known that the spectrum of the Dirichlet Laplacian is stable under small perturbations of a domain, while in the case of the Neumann or mixed boundary conditions the spectrum may abruptly change. In this work we discuss an example of such a domain perturbation. Let $Ω$ be a (not {necessarily} bounded) domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We perturb it to $ Ω_\varepsilon=Ω\setminus \cup_{k=1}^m S_{k,\varepsilon},$ where $S_{k,\varepsilon}$ are closed surfaces with small suitably scaled holes (``windows'') through which the bounded domains enclosed by these surfaces (``resonators'') are connec…
In this note we give three counter-examples which show that the Maximum Principle generally fails for classical solutions of a system and a single equation related to the $\infty$-Laplacian. The first is the tangential part of the $\infty$-Laplace system and the second is the scalar $\infty$-Laplace equation perturbed by a linear gradient term. The interpretations of the Maximum Principle for the system are that of the Convex Hull Property and also of the Maximum Principle of the modulus of the solution.
This paper discusses the unique continuation principal of the solutions of the following perturbed fourth order elliptic differential operator $\mathcal{L}_{A,q}u=0$, where \[ \mathcal{L}_{A,q}(x,D)\ =\ \sum_{j=1}^nD^4_{x_j} + \sum_{j=1}^n A_jD_{x_j} + q, \qquad (A, q) \in W^{1,\infty}(Ω,\mathbb{C}^n) \times L^{\infty}(Ω,\mathbb{C}) \] whose principal term is not given by some integer power of the Laplacian operator. We derive some suitable Carleman estimates which is the main tool to prove the unique continuation principle. As a by-product, we also deduce some stability estimate and prove the…
In this paper we construct entire solutions $u_{\varepsilon}$ to the Cahn-Hilliard equation $-\varepsilon^{2}Δ(-\varepsilon^{2}Δu+W^{'}(u))+W^{"}(u)(-\varepsilon^{2}Δu+W^{'}(u))=0$, under the volume constraint $\int_{\mathbb{R}^{3}}(1-u_{\varepsilon})dx=4\sqrt{2}π^{2}$, whose nodal set approaches the Clifford Torus, that is the Torus with radii of ratio $1/\sqrt{2}$ embedded in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$, as $\varepsilon\to 0$. What is crucial is that the Clifford Torus is a Willmore hypersurface and it is non-degenerate, up to conformal transformations. The proof is based on the Lyapunov-Schmidt reduct…
This paper studies a nonlinear Dirichlet problem for the $p$-Laplacian operator with nonlinearity consisting of power components. The problem under consideration can be though of as a perturbation of the Ambrosetti-Brezis-Cerami problem with concave-convex nonlinearity. The combined effect of power components in the perturbed nonlinearity allows to establish a higher order multiplicity of positive solutions. We study properties of the perturbed energy functional and prove the existence of three positive solutions to the problem at hand.
In this paper we study eigenfunction statistics for a point scatterer (the Laplacian perturbed by a delta-potential) on a three-dimensional flat torus. The eigenfunctions of this operator are the eigenfunctions of the Laplacian which vanish at the scatterer, together with a set of new eigenfunctions (perturbed eigenfunctions). We first show that for a point scatterer on the standard torus all of the perturbed eigenfunctions are uniformly distributed in configuration space. Then we investigate the same problem for a point scatterer on a flat torus with some irrationality conditions, and show un…
We provide an extension of the Hartman-Knobloch theorem for periodic solutions of vector differential systems to a general class of $ϕ$-Laplacian differential operators. Our main tool is a variant of the Manásevich-Mawhin continuation theorem developed for this class of operator equations, together with the theory of bound sets. Our results concern the case of convex bound sets for which we show some new connections using a characterisation of sublevel sets due to Krantz and Parks. We also extend to the $ϕ$-Laplacian vector case a classical theorem of Reissig for scalar periodically perturbed …
Consider a point scatterer (the Laplacian perturbed by a delta-potential) on the standard three-dimensional flat torus. Together with the eigenfunctions of the Laplacian which vanish at the point, this operator has a set of new, perturbed eigenfunctions. In a recent paper, the author was able to show that all of the perturbed eigenfunctions are uniformly distributed in configuration space. In this paper we prove that almost all of these eigenfunctions are uniformly distributed in phase space, i.e. we prove quantum ergodicity for the subspace of the perturbed eigenfunctions. An analogue result …
In this article, we study a model problem featuring a Lévy process in a domain with semi-transparent boundary by considering the following perturbed fractional Laplacian operator \[\mathscr{L}_{b,q} := (-Δ)^t + (-Δ)_Ω^{s/2} \ b (-Δ)_Ω^{s/2} + q, \quad 0<s<t<1\] on a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$. While the non-locality of the fraction Laplacian $(-Δ)^t$ depends on entire $\mathbb{R}^n$, in its non-local perturbation the non-locality depends on the domain $Ω$ through the regional fractional Laplacian term $(-Δ)^{s/2}_Ω$ and $b$ exhibits the semi-transparency of the process. W…
We study the Laplacian perturbed by two delta potentials on a two-dimensional flat torus. There are two types of eigenfunctions for this operator: old, or unperturbed eigenfunctions which are eigenfunctions of the standard Laplacian, and new, perturbed eigenfunctions which are affected by the scatterers. We prove that along a density one sequence, the new eigenfunctions are uniformly distributed in configuration space, provided that the difference of the scattering points is Diophantine.
In this work we construct the heat kernel of the 1/2-order Laplacian perturbed by the first-order gradient term in Hölder space and the zero-order potential term in generalized Kato's class, and obtain sharp two-sided estimates as well as the gradient estimate of the heat kernel.
In this paper we consider a very singular elliptic equation that involves an anisotropic diffusion operator, including one-Laplacian, and is perturbed by a $p$-Laplacian-type diffusion operator with $1<p<\infty$. This equation seems analytically difficult to handle near a facet, the place where the gradient vanishes. Our main purpose is to prove that weak solutions are continuously differentiable even across the facet. Here it is of interest to know whether a gradient is continuous when it is truncated near a facet. To answer this affirmatively, we consider an approximation problem, and use st…
We consider the examples of partial functional differential equations with delay in the Laplacian. First of these equations is linear parabolic equation, the second one is linear hyperbolic equation, third equation is perturbed hyperbolic equation with delay. We show that there are the sequence of eigenvalues in both cases with real parts tends to plus infinity.
In this paper, we consider the following singularly perturbed fractional Kirchhoff problem \begin{equation*} \Big(\varepsilon^{2s}a+\varepsilon^{4s-N} b{\int_{\mathbb{R}^{N}}}|(-Δ)^{\frac{s}{2}}u|^2dx\Big)(-Δ)^su+V(x)u=|u|^{p-2}u,\quad \text{in}\ \mathbb{R}^{N}, \end{equation*} where $a,b>0$, $2s<N<4s$ with $s\in(0,1)$, $2<p<2^*_s=\frac{2N}{N-2s}$ and $(-Δ)^s$ is the fractional Laplacian. For $\varepsilon> 0$ sufficiently small and a bounded continuous function $V$, we establish a type of local Pohozǎev identity by extension technique and then we can obtain the local uniqueness of semiclassica…
We study the stochastic fractional diffusive limit of a kinetic equation involving a small parameter and perturbed by a smooth random term. Generalizing the method of perturbed test functions, under an appropriate scaling for the small parameter, and with the moment method used in the deterministic case, we show the convergence in law to a stochastic fluid limit involving a fractional Laplacian.
We consider harmonic Toeplitz operators $T_V = PV:{\mathcal H}(Ω) \to {\mathcal H}(Ω)$ where $P: L^2(Ω) \to {\mathcal H}(Ω)$ is the orthogonal projection onto ${\mathcal H}(Ω) = \left\{u \in L^2(Ω)\,|\,Δu = 0 \; \mbox{in}\;Ω\right\}$, $Ω\subset {\mathbb R}^d$, $d \geq 2$, is a bounded domain with $\partial Ω\in C^\infty$, and $V: Ω\to {\mathbb C}$ is a suitable multiplier. First, we complement the known criteria which guarantee that $T_V$ is in the $p$th Schatten-von Neumann class $S_p$, by sufficient conditions which imply $T_V \in S_{p, {\rm w}}$, the weak counterpart of $S_p$. Next, we assu…
We prove spectral stability results for the $curl curl$ operator subject to electric boundary conditions on a cavity upon boundary perturbations. The cavities are assumed to be sufficiently smooth but we impose weak restrictions on the strength of the perturbations. The methods are of variational type and are based on two main ingredients: the construction of suitable Piola-type transformations between domains and the proof of uniform Gaffney inequalities obtained by means of uniform a priori $H^2$-estimates for the Poisson problem of the Dirichlet Laplacian. The uniform a priori estimates are…
In this paper, we first establish the uniqueness and non-degeneracy of positive solutions to the fractional Kirchhoff problem \begin{equation*} \Big(a+b{\int_{\mathbb{R}^{N}}}|(-Δ)^{\frac{s}{2}}u|^2dx\Big)(-Δ)^su+mu=|u|^{p-2}u,\quad \text{in}\ \mathbb{R}^{N}, \end{equation*} where $a,b,m>0$, $0<\frac{N}{4}<s<1$, $2<p<2^*_s=\frac{2N}{N-2s}$ and $(-Δ)^s$ is the fractional Laplacian. Then, combining this non-degeneracy result and Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction method, we derive the existence of semiclassical solutions to the singularly perturbation problem \begin{equation*} \Big(\varepsilon^{2s}a+\va…
We study the effects of perturbing the boundary of a rectangle on the nodal sets of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian. Namely, for a rectangle of a given aspect ratio $N$, we identify the first Dirichlet mode to feature a crossing in its nodal set and perturb one of the sides of the rectangle by a close to flat, smooth curve. Such perturbations will often "open" the crossing in the nodal set, splitting it into two curves, and we study the separation between these curves and their regularity. The main technique used is an approximate separation of variables that allows us to restrict study to the…
We establish the local and global theory for the Cauchy problem of the singular Hartree equation in three dimensions, that is, the modification of the non-linear Schrödinger equation with Hartree non-linearity, where the linear part is now given by the Hamiltonian of point interaction. The latter is a singular, self-adjoint perturbation of the free Laplacian, modelling a contact interaction at a fixed point. The resulting non-linear equation is the typical effective equation for the dynamics of condensed Bose gases with fixed point-like impurities. We control the local solution theory in the p…
A general problem of current interest is the analysis of diffusion problems in singularly perturbed domains, within which small subdomains are removed from the domain interior and boundary conditions imposed on the resulting holes. One major application is to intracellular diffusion, where the holes could represent organelles or biochemical substrates. In this paper we use a combination of matched asymptotic analysis and Green's function methods to calculate the so-called accumulation time for relaxation to steady state in 2D domains. The standard measure of the relaxation rate is in terms of …
The main purpose of the present paper is to establish a link between quadrature surfaces (potential theoretic concept) and sandpile dynamics (Laplacian growth models). For this aim, we introduce a new model of Laplacian growth on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$ $(d\geq 2)$ which continuously deforms occupied regions of the \emph{divisible sandpile} model of Levine and Peres, by redistributing the total mass of the system onto $\frac 1m$-sub-level sets of the odometer which is a function counting total emissions of mass from lattice vertices. In free boundary terminology this goes in parallel with s…
We consider Laplacian in a planar strip with Dirichlet boundary condition on the upper boundary and with frequent alternation boundary condition on the lower boundary. The alternation is introduced by the periodic partition of the boundary into small segments on which Dirichlet and Neumann conditions are imposed in turns. We show that under the certain condition the homogenized operator is the Dirichlet Laplacian and prove the uniform resolvent convergence. The spectrum of the perturbed operator consists of its essential part only and has a band structure. We construct the leading terms of the…
We establish various Hardy-type inequalities for the Dirichlet Laplacian in perturbed periodically twisted tubes of non-circular cross-sections. We also state conjectures about the existence of such inequalities in more general regimes, which we support by heuristic and numerical arguments.
This paper is devoted to the proof of almost global existence results for Klein-Gordon equations on Zoll manifolds (e.g. spheres of arbitrary dimension) with Hamiltonian nonlinearities, when the Cauchy data are smooth and small. The proof relies on Birkhoff normal form methods and on the specific distribution of eigenvalues of the laplacian perturbed by a potential on Zoll manifolds.
