Zn doped Mn ferrites nanoparticles were fabricated by using Co-precipitation. Variation in structure, magnetic and optical properties of MnZn ferrites has been discussed. First of all, samples were synthesized, annealed at different temperatures and then characterized. The as-synthesized and annealed samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), Ultra Violet visible spectrometry (Uv-Vis spectrometry) and Vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The average crystallite size of MnZn ferrites nanoparticles determined from XRD were in the range of 42 to 60 nm. These nanoparticles possess normal spinel structure. The SEM images showed the physical shape of the samples, which showed that the as prepared samples are more agglomerated and having flake like shape rather than annealed at 700C while the samples have longitudinal or rod like shape on annealing at 700C. The coercivity (Hc), saturation magnetization (Ms), and remanence (Mr) of Nps were also calculated. The (Ms) value is increasing from 26 to 65 emu/g, the coercivity (Hc) is varying from 13 to 193 Oe and remanence (Mr) has also showing increasing trend although very less, from 0.031 to 0.798 emu/g which are a little part of their bulk counter parts. The band gap energy of the samples was showing decreasing trend as with the increase of particle size which is of the order of 3.5 to 2.9 eV.
Magnetic nanomaterials (23-43 nm) of Cu$_x$Co$_{1-x}$Fe$_2$O$_4$\ (x = 0.0, 0.5 and 1.0) were synthesized by auto combustion method. The crystallite sizes of these materials were calculated from X-ray diffraction peaks. The band observed in Fourier transform infrared spectrum near 575 cm$^{-1}$ in these samples confirm the presence of ferrite phase. Conductivity measurement shows the thermal hysteresis and demonstrates the knee points at 475$^o$C, 525$^o$C and 500$^o$C for copper ferrite, cobalt ferrite and copper-cobalt mixed ferrite respectively. The hystersis M-H loops for these materials w…
Due to the limited rare-earth elements resources, ferrite magnets need to be improved drastically. Ideally, for a true hard magnet, the coercive field should be larger than the saturation magnetization, which is not yet realized for ferrites. Thus, an alternative can be found in making very fine grain ferrite magnets, but it is usually impossible to get small grains and dense material together. In this paper, it is shown that the spark plasma sintering method is able to produce approximately 80% of dense material with crystallites smaller than 100 nm. The as-prepared bulk sintered anisotropic …
Bi3+ Doped Nanocrystalline Ni-Co-Zn Spinel Ferrites: Tuning of Physical, Electrical, Dielectric and Magnetic Properties for Advanced Spintronics Applications
Ferrite nanocrystals are interesting material due to their rich physical properties. Here we add nonmagnetic dopants Zn and Cu to nickel ferrite nanocrystals, Ni1-xMxFe2O4 (0<=x<=1, M{\in}{Cu, Zn}), and characterize how relevant properties of the samples are modified accordingly. Basically, these dopings cause a rearrangement of Fe+3 ions into the two preexisting octahedral and tetrahedral sites. In fact, this, we show, induces pertinent magnetic properties of the doped samples. In the case of the Cu-doping, the Jahn-Teller effect also emerges, which we identify through the FTIR Spectroscopy o…
An in-depth analysis of Zn/Al doped nickel ferrites grown by reactive magnetron sputtering is relevant due to their promising characteristics for applications in spintronics. The material is insulating and ferromagnetic at room temperature with an additional low magnetic damping. By studying the complex interplay between strain and cation distribution their impact on the magnetic properties, i.e. anisotropy, damping and g-factor is unravelled. In particular, a strong influence of the lattice site occupation of Ni$^{2+}_{\text{Td}}$ and cation coordination of Fe$^{2+}_{\text{Oh}}$ on the intrin…
Perovskite structured transition metal oxides are important technological materials for catalysis and solid oxide fuel cell applications. Their functionality often depends on oxygen diffusivity and mobility through complex oxide heterostructures, which can be significantly impacted by structural and chemical modifications, such as doping. Further, when utilized within electrochemical cells, interfacial reactions with other components (e.g. Ni- and Cr-based alloy electrodes and interconnects) can influence the perovskite's reactivity and ion transport, leading to complex dependencies that are d…
Inter-valence charge transfer (IVCT) is electron transfer between two metal $M$ sites differing in oxidation states through a bridging ligand: $M^{n+1} + M'^{m} \rightarrow M^{n} + M'^{m+1}$. It is considered that IVCT is related to the hopping probability of electron (or the electron mobility) in solids. Since controlling the conductivity of ferromagnetic semiconductors (FMSs) is a key subject for the development of spintronic device applications, the manipulation of the conductivity through IVCT may become a new approach of band engineering in FMSs. In Ru-doped cobalt ferrite CoFe$_2$O$_4$ (…
We have investigated the magnetic properties of non-doped ZnO nanostructures by using {\it ab initio} total energy calculations. Contrary to many proposals that ferromagnetism in non-doped semiconductors should be induced by intrinsic point defects, we show that ferromagnetism in nanostructured materials should be mediated by extended defects such as surfaces and grain boundaries. This kind of defects create delocalized, spin polarized states that should be able to warrant long-range magnetic interactions.
In this study, we report the enhancement in field emission (FE) properties of ZnO nanostructure by Ni doping at the base pressure of ~1 x 10-8 mbar, which were grown by the simple wet chemical process. ZnO nanostructure shows single crystalline wurtzite structure up to Ni 10% doping. FESEM represents change in the nanostructure morphology from thick nanoneedles to nanoflakes via thin nanorods with increase in Ni doped ZnO. The turn-on field required to draw a field emission (FE) current density at 1μA/cm2 is found to be 2.5, 2.3, 1.8 and 1.7 V/μm for ZnO(Ni0%), ZnO(Ni5%), ZnO(Ni7.5%) and ZnO(N…
Spinel ferrites in general show a rich interplay of structural, electronic, and magnetic properties. Here, we particularly focus on zinc ferrite (ZFO), which has been observed experimentally to crystallise in the cubic $normal$ spinel structure. However, its magnetic ground state is still under dispute. In addition, some unusual magnetic properties in ZFO thin films or nanostructures have been explained by a possible partial cation inversion and a different magnetic interaction between the two cation sublattices of the spinel structure compared to the crystalline bulk material. Here, density f…

The structure-property relation of nanostructured Al-doped ZnO thin films has been investigated in detail through a systematic variation of structure and morphology, with particular emphasis on how they affect optical and electrical properties. A variety of structures, ranging from compact polycristalline films to mesoporous, hierarchically organized cluster assemblies, are grown by Pulsed Laser Deposition at room temperature at different oxygen pressures. We investigate the dependence of functional properties on structure and morphology and show how the correlation between electrical and opti…
A novel sol-gel route to c-axis orientated undoped and Co, Fe, Mn and V doped ZnO films is reported. Sols were prepared from a hydrated zinc acetate precursor and dimethyl formamide (DMF) solvent. Films were spin-coated on to hydrophilic sapphire substrates then dried, annealed and post-annealed, producing almost purely uniaxial ZnO crystallites and a high degree of long-range structural order. Specific orientation of hexagonal crystallites is demonstrated both perpendicular and parallel to the substrate surface. Cobalt doping resulted in the formation of columnar ZnO nanocrystals. Vanadium do…
Zr/N co-doped TiO2 nanostructures were successfully synthesized using nanotubular titanic acid (NTA) as precursors by a facile wet chemical route and subsequent calcination. These Zr/N-doped TiO2 nanostructures made by NTA precursors show significantly enhanced visible light absorption and much higher photocatalytic performance than the Zr/N-doped P25 TiO2 nanoparticles. Impacts of Zr/N co-doping on the morphologies, optical properties, and photocatalytic activities of the NTA precursor-based TiO2 were thoroughly investigated. The origin of the enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity is…
The origin of room temperature (RT) ferromagnetism (FM) in Ni doped ZnO samples are systematically investigated through physical, optical, and magnetic properties of nanostructure, prepared by simple low-temperature wet chemical method. Reitveld refinement of X-ray diffraction pattern displays an increase in lattice parameters with strain relaxation and contraction in Zn/O occupancy ratio by means of Ni-doping. Similarly scanning electron microscope demonstrates modification in the morphology from nanorods to nanoflakes with Ni doping, suggests incorporation of Ni ions in ZnO. More interesting…
We report on the transport properties of nanostructures made from boron-doped superconducting diamond. Starting from nanocrystalline superconducting boron-doped diamond thin films, grown by Chemical Vapor Deposition, we pattern by electron-beam lithography devices with dimensions in the nanometer range. We show that even for such small devices, the superconducting properties of the material are well preserved: for wires of width less than $100\, nm$, we measure critical temperatures in the Kelvin range and critical field in the Tesla range.
Spectroscopic data demonstrate that impurity D/A levels in doped semiconductor nanostructures are energetically pinned, resulting in variations in D/A binding energies with increasing quantum confinement. Using magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy, the donor binding energies of Co2+ ions in colloidal ZnSe quantum dots have been measured as a function of quantum confinement and analyzed in conjunction with ab initio density functional theory calculations. The resulting experimental demonstration of pinned impurity levels in quantum dots has far-reaching implications for physical phenomena i…
We study the thermoelectric properties of Te-doped FeSb2 nanostructured samples. Four samples of stoichiometry FeSb1.84Te0.16 were prepared by a hot press method at temperatures of 200, 400, 500, and 600 oC. Te-doping enhances the dimensionless figure of merit (ZT) on FeSb2 via two mechanisms. First, a semiconductor to metal transition is induced, which enhances the value of the power factor at low-temperatures. Second, the thermal conductivity, which was already reduced in nanostructured FeSb2 samples, is further reduced by increased point defect scattering through the n type substitution of …
Having access to the chemical environment at the atomic level of a dopant in a nanostructure is crucial for the understanding of its properties. We have performed atomically-resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy to detect individual nitrogen dopants in single-walled carbon nanotubes and compared with first principles calculations. We demonstrate that nitrogen doping occurs as single atoms in different bonding configurations: graphitic-like and pyrrolic-like substitutional nitrogen neighbouring local lattice distortion such as Stone-Thrower-Wales defects. The stability under the electron b…
We have studied the influence of intrinsic and extrinsic defects in the magnetic and electrical transport properties of Co-doped ZnO thin films. X ray absorption measurements show that Co substitute Zn in the ZnO structure and it is in the 2+ oxidation state. Magnetization (M) measurements show that doped samples are mainly paramagnetic. From M vs. H loops measured at 5 K we found that the values of the orbital L and spin S numbers are between 1 and 1.3 for L and S = 3/2, in agreement with the representative values for isolated Co 2+. The obtained negative values of the Curie-Weiss temperature…
In this study we investigate magnetic properties, surface morphology and crystal structure in iron nanoclusters electrodeposited on lightly-doped (100) n-type silicon substrates. Our goal is to investigate the spin injection and detection in the Fe/Si lateral structures. The samples obtained under electric percolation were characterized by magnetoresistive and magnetic resonance measurements with cycling the sweeping applied field in order to understand the spin dynamics in the as-produced samples. The observed hysteresis in the magnetic resonance spectra, plus the presence of a broad peak in …
Silicon nanoparticles are widely used in the medical area and until now they have not manifested toxicological effects in humans beings. In order to understand the physical properties that determine their low-toxicity, we perform ab initio computational simulations of silicon nanoclusters, pure, p-doped and hollow structured. The topological and electronic properties obtained pointed out to the number of dangling bonds and electronic density as fundamental parameters to locate active sites and directly related to toxicity, besides the size and surface chemistry of the silicon nanoparticle.
An emerging branch of electronics, the optospintronics, would be highly boosted if the control of magnetic order by light is implemented in magnetic semiconductors nanostructures being compatible with the actual technology. Here we show that the ferromagnetic magnetization of low Fe-doped ZnO nanowires prepared by carbothermal process is enhanced under illumination up to temperatures slightly below room temperature. This enhancement is related to the existence of an oxygen vacancy V$_{\rm O}$ in the neighbouring of an antiferromagnetic superexchange Fe$^{3+}$-Fe$^{3+}$ pair. Under illumination…
Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) constitute a breakthrough in modern chemistry. The recent success in the synthesis and total structure determination of the precise-composition GNPs provides exciting opportunities for fundamental studies and development of novel applications. GNPs allow for specific number of alien metal atoms to be incorporated into the gold core. Doping tunes optical, structural, and electronic properties of the nanostructure. This work examines silver-doped negatively charged Au25Ag25-N (N=1,2,3) GNPs using PM7-MD. GNP is shown to accommodate multiple silver atoms, whereas silver …
Ferrites with (inverse) spinel structure display a large variety of electronic and magnetic properties making some of them interesting for potential applications in spintronics. We investigate the thermally induced interdiffusion of Ni$^{2+}$ ions out of NiO into Fe$_3$O$_4$ ultrathin films resulting in off-stoichiometric nickelferrite-like thin layers. We synthesized epitaxial Fe$_3$O$_4$/NiO bilayers on Nb-doped SrTiO$_3$(001) substrates by means of reactive molecular beam epitaxy. Subsequently, we performed an annealing cycle comprising three steps at temperatures of 400\,$^{\circ}$C, 600\,…
A comparative study of the gain achievement is performed in a waveguide optical amplifier whose active layer is constituted by a silica matrix containing silicon nanograins acting as sensitizer of either neodymium ions (Nd 3+) or erbium ions (Er 3+). Due to the large difference between population levels characteristic times (ms) and finite-difference time step (10 --17 s), the conventional auxiliary differential equation and finite-difference time-domain (ADE-FDTD) method is not appropriate to treat such systems. Consequently, a new two loops algorithm based on ADE-FDTD method is presented in …
Here we report on a novel chemical route to synthesize homogenous cobalt doped titanate nanotubes (CoTNT), using an amorphous Co-doped precursor. The influence of the synthesis temperature, autoclave dwell time and metal doping on the structural and microstructural as well as on the optical properties of the synthesized titanate nanotubes is studied and discussed. The optical band gaps of the CoTNT samples are red shifted in comparison with the values determined for the undoped samples, such red shifts bringing the absorption edge of the CoTNT samples into the visible region. CoTNT materials a…
Mn doping of group-IV semiconductors (Si/Ge) is achieved by embedding a thin Mn-film as a δ-doped layer in group-IV matrix. The Mn-layer consists of a dense layer of monoatomic Mn-wires, which are oriented perpendicular to the Si(001)-(2x1) dimer rows, or Mn-clusters. The nanostructures are covered with an amorphous Si or Ge capping layer, which conserves the identity of the δ-doped layer. The analysis of the bonding environment with STM is combined with the element-specific detection of the magnetic signature with X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The largest moment (2.5 μB/Mn) is measured f…
We have studied the 1.5 $μ$m photoluminescence (PL) from Er ions after annealing two different sample sets in the temperature range 500 °C to 1100 °C. The different sample sets were made by magnetron sputtering from composite targets of Si+SiO2+Er and Ge+SiO2+Er respectively for the different sample sets. The annealing induces Si - and Ge-nanoclusters respectively in the different film sets. The PL peak reaches its maximum intensity after annealing at 700 °C for samples with Ge nanoclusters and after annealing at 800 °C for samples with Si. No luminescence from nanoclusters was…
A principal possibility of formation the nanostructures on the surfaces of 50PbO-25Bi$_2$O$_3$-20Ga$_2$O$_3$-5BaO (doped by Eu3+, Er3+, Dy3+) is demonstrated by using multi-coherent beams. As a sources of the photoinducing coherent light we have used nanosecond Nd:YAG and Er:Yb lasers generating at 1064 nm and 1540 nm, respectively. The morphology of the photoinduced surfaces is sensitive to the type of rare earth ions. The thickness of the layer was about 20-30 nm. Possible mechanisms are explained by coherent photoinduction of the valence electrons.
For simultaneously achieving the high-power factor and low lattice thermal conductivity of Si-Ge based thermoelectric materials, we employed, in this study, constructively modifying the electronic structure near the chemical potential and nano-structuring by low temperature and high-pressure sintering on nano-crystalline powders. Nickel was doped to create the impurity states near the edge of the valence band for enhancing the power factor with boron for tuning the carrier concentration. The nanostructured samples with the nominal composition of Si0.65-xGe0.32Ni0.03Bx (x = 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, an…
Conductive polymers or "organic metals" are highly engineered nanostructured materials made from organic building blocks. They are candidates as molecular wires for nanotechnology applications in molecular electronics. The conduction in these polymers is due to the presence of delocalized molecular orbitals. In this work, we present the synthesis of chloride doped polyaniline by bulk oxidative chemical polymerization using a solid aniline salt as a monomer instead of liquid aniline to diminish toxic hazards. The FTIR and UV-visible spectra confirmed the expected structure of the polymer. The e…
In the prospect of understanding the photoluminescence mechanisms of AlN films doped with erbium and targeting photonic applications we have synthesized non doped and Er-doped AlN films with different crystallized nanostructures by using PVD magnetron sputtering. Their crystalline morphology and their visible photoluminescence properties were precisely measured.Due to the weak cross-section absorption of rare earths like erbium, it is necessary to obtain an efficient energy transfer mechanism between the host matrix and the rare earth to obtain high luminescence efficiency. Our strategy is the…
Thermoelectric device is a promising next-generation energy solution owing to its capability to transform waste heat into useful electric energy, which can be realized in materials with high elec- tric conductivities and low thermal conductivities. A recently synthesized silicon allotrope of Si$_{24}$ features highly anisotropic crystal structure with nanometre-sized regular pores. Here, based on first-principles study without any empirical parameter, we show that the slightly doped Si$_{24}$ can pro- vide an order-of-magnitude enhanced thermoelectric figure of merit at room temperature, compa…
In this paper, we report on the co-doping nitrogen and sulfur has been achieved in the TiO2 nanotube array films by treatment with thiourea and calcination under vacuum at 500 °C for 3 h. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. XPS spectra revealed that N might coexist in the forms of NTiO and NOTi, S was incorporated into the lattice of TiO2 through substituting oxygen atoms in the N + S co-doped TiO2 nanotube array films. XRD patterns indicated tha…
X-ray scattering measurements on optimally-doped single crystal samples of the high temperature superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ reveal the presence of three distinct incommensurate charge modulations, each involving a roughly fivefold increase in the unit cell dimension along the {\bf b}-direction. The strongest scattering comes from the well known (H, K$\pm$ 0.21, L) modulation and its harmonics. However, we also observe broad diffraction which peak up at the L values complementary to those which characterize the known modulated structure. These diffraction features correspond to…
We study the luminescence of unintentionally doped and Si-doped In$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$N nanowires with a low In content (x<0.2) grown by molecular beam epitaxy on Si substrates. The emission band observed at 300 K from the unintentionally doped samples is centered at much lower energies (800 meV) than expected from the In content measured by x-ray diffractometry and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. This discrepancy arises from the pinning of the Fermi level at the sidewalls of the nanowires, which gives rise to strong radial built-in electric fields. The combination of the built-in electric fie…
