Our aim is to contribute to quantum field theory (QFT) formalisms useful for descriptions of short time phenomena, dominant especially in heavy ion collisions. We formulate out-of-equilibrium QFT within the finite-time-path formalism (FTP) and renormalization theory (RT). The potential conflict of FTP and RT is investigated in $g ϕ^3$ QFT, by using the retarded/advanced ($R/A$) basis of Green functions and dimensional renormalization (DR). For example, vertices immediately after (in time) divergent self-energy loops do not conserve energy, as integrals diverge. We "repair" them, while keeping $d<4$, to obtain energy conservation at those vertices. Already in the S-matrix theory, the renormalized, finite part of Feynman self-energy $Σ_{F}(p_0)$ does not vanish when $|p_0|\rightarrow\infty$ and cannot be split to retarded and advanced parts. In the Glaser--Epstein approach, the causality is repaired in the composite object $G_F(p_0)Σ_{F}(p_0)$. In the FTP approach, after repairing the vertices, the corresponding composite objects are $G_R(p_0)Σ_{R}(p_0)$ and $Σ_{A}(p_0)G_A(p_0)$. In the limit $d\rightarrow 4$, one obtains causal QFT. The tadpole contribution splits into diverging and finite parts. The diverging, constant component is eliminated by the renormalization condition $\langle 0|ϕ|0\rangle =0$ of the S-matrix theory. The finite, oscillating energy-nonconserving tadpole contributions vanish in the limit $t\rightarrow \infty $.
In this note we discuss the relation between the constraints imposed by causality in the bulk of $AdS$ and the condition of positivity of the energy measured in ideal calorimeters in a collider experiment in the dual CFT. We first extend the analysis in the literature and recover all bounds imposed by causality of the boundary theory in the bulk dynamics for all polarizations of the graviton and the gauge boson field. These results translate to specific bounds for the ratio of central charges $\frac{a}{c}$ in the dual CFT, already found by analyzing the energy one point function. Then, we gene…
We study the causality violation in the non-local quantum field theory (as formulated by Kleppe and Woodard) containing a finite mass scale $Λ$. We use $ϕ^{4}$ theory as a simple model for study. Starting from the Bogoliubov-Shirkov criterion for causality, we construct and study combinations of S-matrix elements that signal violation of causality in the one loop approximation. We find that the causality violation in the exclusive process $ϕ+ϕ\to ϕ+ϕ$ grows with energy, but the growth with energy, (for low to moderate energies) is suppressed to all orders compared to what one would expect pure…
We analyze the constraints that causality imposes on some of the particle detector models employed in quantum field theory in general, and in particular on those used in quantum optics (or superconducting circuits) to model atoms interacting with light. Namely, we show that disallowing faster-than-light communication can impose severe constraints on the applicability of particle detector models in three different common scenarios: 1) when the detectors are spatially smeared, 2) when a UV cutoff is introduced in the theory and 3) under one of the most typical approximations made in quantum opti…
The basics of RG equations for generic partition functions are briefly reviewed, keeping in mind an application to the Polyakov-de Boer-Verlindes description of the holomorphic RG flow.
We show that large n-particle production rates derived in the semiclassical Higgsplosion limit of scalar field theoretical models with spontaneous symmetry breaking, are consistent with general principles of localizable quantum field theory. The strict localizability criterium of Jaffe defines quantum fields as operator-valued distributions acting on test functions that are localized in finite regions of space-time. The requirement of finite support of test functions in space-time ensures the causality property of QFT. The corresponding localizable fields need not be tempered distributions, an…
The structure of the QFT expansion is studied in the framework of a new "Invariant analytic" version of the perturbative QCD. Here, an invariant (running) coupling $a(Q^2/Λ^2)=β_1α_s(Q^2)/4π$ is transformed into a "$Q^2$--analytized" invariant coupling $a_{\rm an}(Q^2/Λ^2) \equiv {\cal A}(x)$ which, by constuction, is free of ghost singularities due to incorporating some nonperturbative structures. Meanwhile, the "analytized" perturbation expansion for an observable $F$, in contrast with the usual case, may contain specific functions ${\cal A}_n(x)= [a^n(x)]_{\rm an}$, the "n-th power of $a(x)…
Using the recently introduced parametric representation of non-commutative quantum field theory, we implement here the dimensional regularization and renormalization of the vulcanized $Φ^{\star 4}_4$ model on the Moyal space.
The quantum evolution equations for the field expectation value are analytically solved to cubic order in the field amplitude and to one-loop level in the lambda phi-fourth model. We adapt and use the renormalization group (RG) method for such non-linear and non-local equations. The time dependence of the field expectation value is explicitly derived integrating the RG equations. It is shown that the field amplitude for late times approaches a finite limit as the time to the power -3/2. This limiting value is expressed as a function of the initial field amplitude.
Field theories on deformed spaces suffer from the IR/UV mixing and renormalization is generically spoiled. In work with R. Wulkenhaar, one of us realized a way to cure this disease by adding one more marginal operator. We review these ideas, show the application to $ϕ^3$ models and use the heat kernel expansion methods for a scalar field theory coupled to an external gauge field on a $θ$-deformed space and derive noncommutative gauge field actions.

The structure of overlapping subdivergences, which appear in the perturbative expansions of quantum field theory, is analyzed using algebraic lattice theory. It is shown that for specific QFTs the sets of subdivergences of Feynman diagrams form algebraic lattices. This class of QFTs includes the Standard model. In kinematic renormalization schemes, in which tadpole diagrams vanish, these lattices are semimodular. This implies that the Hopf algebra of Feynman diagrams is graded by the coradical degree or equivalently that every maximal forest has the same length in the scope of BPHZ renormaliza…
This paper proposes a different interpretation on the renormalization program of an interacting Klein-Gordon field in curved space-times. Rather than being just another renormalization program we argue that it that it makes the QFT ultraviolet-finite at its foundation. More precisely, we argue that renormalization is a part of the foundation of QFT and that without it the theory is mathematically ill-defined or at the very least incompletely specified.
The effective actions describing the low-energy dynamics of QFTs involving gravity generically exhibit causality violations. These may take the form of superluminal propagation or Shapiro time advances and allow the construction of "time machines", i.e. spacetimes admitting closed non-spacelike curves. Here, we discuss critically whether such causality violations may be used as a criterion to identify unphysical effective actions or whether, and how, causality problems may be resolved by embedding the action in a fundamental, UV complete QFT. We study in detail the case of photon scattering in…
An introduction to the theory of the renormalization group in the context of quantum field theories of relevance to particle physics is presented in the form of 6 lectures delivered to the British Universities Summer School in Theoretical Elementary Particle Physics (BUSSTEPP). Emphasis is placed on gaining a physical understand of the running of the couplings and the Wilsonian version of the renormalization group is related to conventional perturbative calculations with dimensional regularization and minimal subtraction. An introduction is given to some of the remarkable renormalization group…
The amplitude A(s,t) for ultra-high energy scattering can be found in the leading eikonal approximation by considering propagation in an Aichelburg-Sexl gravitational shockwave background. Loop corrections in the QFT describing the scattered particles are encoded for energies below the Planck scale in an effective action which in general exhibits causality violation and Shapiro time advances. In this paper, we use Penrose limit techniques to calculate the full energy dependence of the scattering phase shift Theta_scat(hat_s},, where the single variable hat_s = Gs/m^2 b^(d-2) contains both the …
Traditionally, Quantum Field Theory (QFT) treats particle excitations as point-like objects, which is the source of ubiquitous divergences. We demonstrate that a minimal modification of QFT with finite volume particles may cure QFT of divergences and illuminate the physics behind the mathematical construct of our theories. The method allows for a non-perturbative treatment of the free field and self-interacting theories (though extensions to all interacting field theories might be possible). In particular, non-perturbatively defined mass is finite. When applied to the standard model Higgs mech…
This text follows the line of a talk on Ringberg symposium dedicated to Wolfhart Zimmermann 70th birthday. The historical overview (Part 1) partially overlaps with corresponding text of my previous commemorative paper. At the same time second part includes some recent results in QFT and summarize an impressive progress of the "QFT renormalization group" application in mathematical physics.
We start with a simple introduction into the renormalization group (RG) in quantum field theory and give an overview of the renormalization group method. The third section is devoted to essential topics of the renorm-group use in the QFT. Here, some fresh results are included. Then we turn to the remarkable proliferation of the RG ideas into various fields of physics. The last section summarizes an impressive recent progress of the "QFT renormalization group" application in mathematical physics.
Ever since the appearance of renormalization theory there have been several differently motivated attempts at non-localized (in the sense of not generated by point-like fields) relativistic particle theories, the most recent one being at QFT on non-commutative Minkowski spacetime. The often conceptually uncritical and historically forgetful contemporary approach to these problems calls for a critical review the light of previous results on this subject.
A new symmetry-preserving loop regularization method proposed in \cite{ylw} is further investigated. It is found that its prescription can be understood by introducing a regulating distribution function to the proper-time formalism of irreducible loop integrals. The method simulates in many interesting features to the momentum cutoff, Pauli-Villars and dimensional regularization. The loop regularization method is also simple and general for the practical calculations to higher loop graphs and can be applied to both underlying and effective quantum field theories including gauge, chiral, supers…
We study the appearance of anomalies of the Master Ward Identity, which is a universal renormalization condition in perturbative QFT. The main insight of the present paper is that any violation of the Master Ward Identity can be expressed as a LOCAL interacting field; this is a version of the well-known Quantum Action Principle of Lowenstein and Lam. Proceeding in a proper field formalism by induction on the order in $\hbar$, this knowledge about the structure of possible anomalies as well as techniques of algebraic renormalization are used to remove possible anomalies by finite renormalizatio…
In the framework of quantum field theory (QFT) on noncommutative (NC) space-time with the symmetry group $O(1,1)\times SO(2)$, we prove that the Jost-Lehmann-Dyson representation, based on the causality condition taken in connection with this symmetry, leads to the mere impossibility of drawing any conclusion on the analyticity of the $2\to 2$-scattering amplitude in $\cosΘ$, $Θ$ being the scattering angle. Discussions on the possible ways of obtaining high-energy bounds analogous to the Froissart-Martin bound on the total cross-section are also presented.
In this article an attempt is made to present very recent conceptual and computational developments in QFT as new manifestations of old and well establihed physical principles. The vehicle for converting the quantum-algebraic aspects of local quantum physics into more classical geometric structures is the modular theory of Tomita. As the above named laureate to whom I have dedicated has shown together with his collaborator for the first time in sufficient generality, its use in physics goes through Einstein causality. This line of research recently gained momentum when it was realized that it …
We present several approaches to renormalization in QFT: the multi-scale analysis in perturbative renormalization, the functional methods à la Wetterich equation, and the loop-vertex expansion in non-perturbative renormalization. While each of these is quite well-established, they go beyond standard QFT textbook material, and may be little-known to specialists of each other approach. This review is aimed at bridging this gap.
In holographic duality, dynamics along the emergent extra-dimensional space describes a renormalization group (RG) flow of the corresponding quantum field theory (QFT). Following this idea, we develop an emergent holographic description of a QFT, where not only the information of the RG flow is introduced into an IR holographic dual effective field theory (HDEFT), but also the UV information of the QFT is encoded in the HDEFT through the IR boundary condition. In particular, we argue that this dual holographic construction is self-consistent within the assumption of bulk locality, showing the …
I prove that classical gravity coupled with quantized matter can be renormalized with a finite number of independent couplings, plus field redefinitions, without introducing higher-derivative kinetic terms in the gravitational sector, but adding vertices that couple the matter stress-tensor with the Ricci tensor. The theory is called "acausal gravity", because it predicts the violation of causality at high energies. Renormalizability is proved by means of a map M that relates acausal gravity with higher-derivative gravity. The causality violations are governed by two parameters, a and b, that …
Entanglement renormalization can be viewed as an encoding circuit for a family of approximate quantum error correcting codes. The logical information becomes progressively more well-protected against erasure errors at larger length scales. In particular, an approximate variant of holographic quantum error correcting code emerges at low energy for critical systems. This implies that two operators that are largely separated in scales behave as if they are spatially separated operators, in the sense that they obey a Lieb-Robinson type locality bound under a time evolution generated bya local Hami…
The paper gives a historical survey of the causal position space renormalization with a special attention to the role of Raymond Stora in the development of this subject. Renormalization is reduced to subtracting the pole term in analytically regularized primitively divergent Feynman amplitudes. The identification of residues with "quantum periods" and their relation to recent developments in number theory are emphasized. We demonstrate the possibility of integration over internal vertices (that requires control over the infrared behavior) in the case of the massless $φ^4$ theory and display t…
The adaptation of the Kramers-Kronig dispersion relations to the causal localization structure of QFT led to an important project in particle physics, the only one with a successful closure. The same cannot be said about the subsequent attempts to formulate particle physics as a pure S-matrix project. The feasibility of a pure S-matrix approach are critically analyzed and their serious shortcomings are highlighted. Whereas the conceptual/mathematical demands of renormalized perturbation theory are modest and misunderstandings could easily be corrected, the correct understanding about the origi…
In general, quantum field theories (QFT) require regularizations and infinite renormalizations due to ultraviolet divergences in their loop calculations. Furthermore, perturbation series in theories like QED are not convergent series, but are asymptotic series. We apply neutrix calculus, developed in connection with asymptotic series and divergent integrals, to QFT,obtaining finite renormalizations. While none of the physically measurable results in renormalizable QFT is changed, quantum gravity is rendered more manageable in the neutrix framework.
A new attempt is demonstrated that QFTs can be UV finite if they are viewed as the low energy effective theories of a fundamental underlying theory (complete and well-defined in all respects) according to the modern standard point of view. This approach is much simpler in principle and in technology comparing to any known renormalization program. Some subtle and difficult issues can be easily resolved. The importance of the procedure for defining the ambiguities is fully appreciated in the new approach. Some simple but important nonperturbative examples are discussed to show the power and plau…
It is currently believed that the local causality of Quantum Field Theory (QFT) is destroyed by the measurement process. This belief is also based on the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) paradox and on the so-called Bell's theorem, that are thought to prove the existence of a mysterious, instantaneous action between distant measurements. However, I have shown recently that the EPR argument is removed, in an interpretation-independent way, by taking into account the fact that the Standard Model of Particle Physics prevents the production of entangled states with a definite number of particles. Thi…
Unitary, Lorentz-invariant quantum field theories in flat spacetime obey microcausality: commutators vanish at spacelike separation. For interacting theories in more than two dimensions, we show that this implies that the averaged null energy, $\int du T_{uu}$, must be positive. This non-local operator appears in the operator product expansion of local operators in the lightcone limit, and therefore contributes to $n$-point functions. We derive a sum rule that isolates this contribution and is manifestly positive. The argument also applies to certain higher spin operators other than the stress…
We explore the relation between the Hopf algebra associated to the renormalization of QFT and the Hopf algebra associated to the NCG computations of transverse index theory for foliations.
A regularization renormalization method ($RRM$) in quantum field theory ($QFT$) is discussed with simple rules: Once a divergent integral $I$ is encountered, we first take its derivative with respect to some mass parameter enough times, rendering it just convergent. Then integrate it back into $I$ with some arbitrary constants appeared. Third, the renormalization is nothing but a process of reconfirmation to fix relevant parameters (mass, charge, \etc) by experimental data via suitable choices of these constants. Various $QFT$ problems, including the Lamb shift, the running coupling constants …
We begin with personal notes describing the atmosphere of "Bogoliubov renormalization group" birth. Then we expose the history of RG discovery in the QFT and of the RG method devising in the mid-fifties. The third part is devoted to proliferation of RG ideas into diverse parts of theoretical physics. We conclude with discussing the perspective of RG method further development and its application in mathematical physics.
This is a further explanation of a new and simple renormalization approach recently proposed by the author (hep-th/9708104, Ref. [1], that is somewhat sketchy) for any ordinary QFT (whether renormalizable or not) in any spacetime dimension. We discussed the physical motivations of the new approach and its efficiency when compared to the existent renormalization approaches. Some other important issues related are briefly touched.

In a recent work arXiv:2008.08601, Halverson, Maiti and Stoner proposed a description of neural networks in terms of a Wilsonian effective field theory. The infinite-width limit is mapped to a free field theory, while finite $N$ corrections are taken into account by interactions (non-Gaussian terms in the action). In this paper, we study two related aspects of this correspondence. First, we comment on the concepts of locality and power-counting in this context. Indeed, these usual space-time notions may not hold for neural networks (since inputs can be arbitrary), however, the renormalization …
Formulating the QFT's as coarse grained 'low' energy sectors of a postulated complete quantum theory of everything with the 'high' energy modes integrated out or 'clustering' into 'low' energy objects, we can evaluate the Feynman amplitudes by solving a series of natural differential equations which automatically dissolves the necessity of infinity subtraction and the associated subtleties. This new strategy has direct implications to the scheme dependence problem.

A large class of Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations governing the Renormalization Group evolution of the Casimir energy of the vacuum on the cylinder for an integrable two-dimensional field theory, can often be encoded on a tensor product of two graphs. We demonstrate here that in this case the two graphs can only be of $ADE$ type. We also give strong numerical evidence for a new large set of Dilogarithm sum Rules connected to $ADE\times ADE$ and a simple formula for the ultraviolet perturbing operator conformal dimensions only in terms of rank and Coxeter numbers of $ADE\times ADE$. We conc…

We present a pedagogical review of old inconsistencies of Classical Electrodynamics and of some new ideas that solve them. Problems with the electron equation of motion and with the non-integrable singularity of its self-field energy tensor are well known. They are consequences, we show, of neglecting terms that are null off the charge world-line but that give a non null contribution on its world-line. The electron self-field energy tensor is integrable without the use of any kind of renormalization; there is no causality violation and no conflict with energy conservation in the electron equat…
We prove a conjectured lower bound on $\left< T_{--}(x) \right>_ψ$ in any state $ψ$ of a relativistic QFT dubbed the Quantum Null Energy Condition (QNEC). The bound is given by the second order shape deformation, in the null direction, of the geometric entanglement entropy of an entangling cut passing through $x$. Our proof involves a combination of the two independent methods that were used recently to prove the weaker Averaged Null Energy Condition (ANEC). In particular the properties of modular Hamiltonians under shape deformations for the state $ψ$ play an important role, as do causality c…
This work presents some results about Wick polynomials of a vector field renormalization in locally covariant algebraic quantum field theory in curved spacetime. General vector fields are pictured as sections of natural vector bundles over globally hyperbolic spacetimes and quantized through the known functorial machinery in terms of local $^*$-algebras. These quantized fields may be defined on spacetimes with given classical background fields, also sections of natural vector bundles, in addition to the Lorentzian metric. The mass and the coupling constants are in particular viewed as backgrou…
Evolution of the concept known in the theoretical physics as the Renormalization Group (RG) is presented. The corresponding symmetry, that has been first introduced in QFT in mid-fifties, is a continuous symmetry of a solution with respect to transformation involving parameters (e.g., of boundary condition) specifying some particular solution. After short detour into Wilson's discrete semi-group, we follow the expansion of QFT RG and argue that the underlying transformation, being considered as a reparameterisation one, is closely related to the self-similarity property. It can be treated as i…
We reassess the problem of renormalization in finite temperature field theory (FTFT). A new point of view elucidates the relation between the ultraviolet divergences for T=0 and $T \not= 0$ theories and makes clear the reason why the ultraviolet behavior keeps unaffected when we consider the FTFT version associated to a given quantum field theory (QFT). The strength of the derivation one lies on the Hörmander's criterion for the existence of products of distributions in terms of the wavefront sets of the respective distributions. The approach allows us to regard the FTFT both imaginary and rea…
This paper is devoted to presenting in detail the non-perturbative renormalization group (NPRG) formalism to investigate out-of-equilibrium systems and critical dynamics in statistical physics. The general NPRG framework for studying non-equilibrium steady states in stochastic models is expounded and fundamental technicalities are stressed, mainly regarding the role of causality and of Ito's discretization. We analyze the consequences of Ito's prescription in the NPRG framework and eventually provide an adequate regularization to encode them automatically. Besides, we show how to build a super…
We investigate the holographic renormalization group flows and the classical phase transitions that occur in two dimensional QFT model dual to the New Massive 3D Gravity coupled to scalar matter. Specific matter self-interactions generated by quadratic superpotential are considered. The off-critical $AdS_3/CFT_2$ correspondence determines the exact form of the $ QFT_2$ 's $β$ -function and the singular part of the reduced free energy. The corresponding scaling laws and critical exponents characterizing the RG fixed points as well as the values of the mass gaps in the massive phases are obtaine…
