We present a 2D bosonization duality using the language of tensor networks. Specifically, we construct a tensor network operator (TNO) that implements an exact 2D bosonization duality. The primary benefit of the TNO is that it allows for bosonization at the level of quantum states. Thus, we use the TNO to provide an explicit algorithm for bosonizing fermionic projected entangled pair states (fPEPs). A key step in the algorithm is to account for a choice of spin-structure, encoded in a set of bonds of the bosonized fPEPS. This enables our tensor network approach to bosonization to be applied to systems on arbitrary triangulations of orientable 2D manifolds.

Global symmetries in tensor network states: symmetric tensors versus minimal bond dimension
Tensor networks offer a variational formalism to efficiently represent wave-functions of extended quantum many-body systems on a lattice. In a tensor network N, the dimension χof the bond indices that connect its tensors controls the number of variational parameters and associated computational costs. In the absence of any symmetry, the minimal bond dimension χ^{min} required to represent a given many-body wave-function |Ψ> leads to the most compact, computationally efficient tensor network description of |Ψ>. In the presence of a global, on-site symmetry, one can use a tensor network N_{sym} …
Tensor product state (TPS) based methods are powerful tools to efficiently simulate quantum many-body systems in and out of equilibrium. In particular, the one-dimensional matrix-product (MPS) formalism is by now an established tool in condensed matter theory and quantum chemistry. In these lecture notes, we combine a compact review of basic TPS concepts with the introduction of a versatile tensor library for Python (TeNPy) [https://github.com/tenpy/tenpy]. As concrete examples, we consider the MPS based time-evolving block decimation and the density matrix renormalization group algorithm. Mor…
In this work we present and analyze two tensor network-based influence functional approaches for simulating the real-time dynamics of quantum impurity models such as the Anderson model. Via comparison with recent numerically exact simulations, we show that such methods accurately capture the long-time non-equilibrium quench dynamics. The two parameters that must be controlled in these tensor network influence functional approaches are a time discretization (Trotter) error and a bond dimension (tensor network truncation) error. We show that the actual numerical uncertainties are controlled by a…
We present a generalization of the Time Dependent Variational Principle (TDVP) to any finite sized loop-free tensor network. The major advantage of TDVP is that it can be employed as long as a representation of the Hamiltonian in the same tensor network structure that encodes the state is available. Often, such a representation can be found also for long-range terms in the Hamiltonian. As an application we use TDVP for the Fork Tensor Product States tensor network for multi-orbital Anderson impurity models. We demonstrate that TDVP allows to account for off-diagonal hybridizations in the bath …
We present an overview of the key ideas and skills necessary to begin implementing tensor network methods numerically, which is intended to facilitate the practical application of tensor network methods for researchers that are already versed with their theoretical foundations. These skills include an introduction to the contraction of tensor networks, to optimal tensor decompositions, and to the manipulation of gauge degrees of freedom in tensor networks. The topics presented are of key importance to many common tensor network algorithms such as DMRG, TEBD, TRG, PEPS and MERA.
Tensor networks are used to efficiently approximate states of strongly-correlated quantum many-body systems. More generally, tensor network approximations may allow to reduce the costs for operating on an order-$N$ tensor from exponential to polynomial in $N$, and this has become a popular approach for machine learning. We introduce the idea of imposing low-rank constraints on the tensors that compose the tensor network. With this modification, the time and space complexities for the network optimization can be substantially reduced while maintaining high accuracy. We detail this idea for tree…
Tensor network algorithms have been remarkably successful solving a variety of problems in quantum many-body physics. However, algorithms to optimize two-dimensional tensor networks known as PEPS lack many of the aspects that make the seminal density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm so powerful for optimizing one-dimensional tensor networks known as matrix product states. We implement a framework for optimizing two-dimensional PEPS tensor networks which includes all of steps that make DMRG so successful for optimizing one-dimension tensor networks. We present results for several 2…
We describe an approach to fix the gauge degrees of freedom in tensor networks, including those with closed loops, which allows a canonical form for arbitrary tensor networks to be realized. Additionally, a measure for the internal correlations present in a tensor network is proposed, which quantifies the extent of resonances around closed loops in the network. Finally we describe an algorithm for the optimal truncation of an internal index from a tensor network, based upon proper removal of the redundant internal correlations. These results, which offer a unified theoretical framework for the…
Tensor network methods are a conceptually elegant framework for encoding complicated datasets, where high-order tensors are approximated as networks of low-order tensors. In practice, however, the numeric implementation of tensor network algorithms is often a labor-intensive and error-prone task, even for experienced researchers in this area. \emph{TensorTrace} is application designed to alleviate the burden of contracting tensor networks: it provides a graphic drawing interface specifically tailored for the construction of tensor network diagrams, from which the code for their optimal contrac…
We define a class of tensor network states for spin systems where the individual tensors are functionals of fields. The construction is based on the path integral representation of correlators of operators in quantum field theory. These tensor network states are infinite dimensional versions of matrix product states and projected entangled pair states. We find the field-tensor that generates the Haldane-Shastry wave function and extend it to two dimensions. We give evidence that the latter underlies the topological chiral state described by the Kalmeyer-Laughlin wave function.
We characterize the variational power of quantum circuit tensor networks in the representation of physical many-body ground-states. Such tensor networks are formed by replacing the dense block unitaries and isometries in standard tensor networks by local quantum circuits. We explore both quantum circuit matrix product states and the quantum circuit multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz, and introduce an adaptive method to optimize the resulting circuits to high fidelity with more than $10^4$ parameters. We benchmark their expressiveness against standard tensor networks, as well as ot…
We construct a tensor network representation of the partition function for the massless Schwinger model on a two dimensional lattice using staggered fermions. The tensor network representation allows us to include a topological term. Using a particular implementation of the tensor renormalization group (HOTRG) we calculate the phase diagram of the theory. For a range of values of the coupling to the topological term $θ$ and the gauge coupling $β$ we compare with results from hybrid Monte Carlo when possible and find good agreement.
ITensor is a system for programming tensor network calculations with an interface modeled on tensor diagram notation, which allows users to focus on the connectivity of a tensor network without manually bookkeeping tensor indices. The ITensor interface rules out common programming errors and enables rapid prototyping of tensor network algorithms. After discussing the philosophy behind the ITensor approach, we show examples of each part of the interface including Index objects, the ITensor product operator, tensor factorizations, tensor storage types, algorithms for matrix product state (MPS) a…
This paper accompanies with our recent work on quantum error correction (QEC) and entanglement spectrum (ES) in tensor networks (arXiv:1806.05007). We propose a general framework for planar tensor network state with tensor constraints as a model for $AdS_3/CFT_2$ correspondence, which could be viewed as a generalization of hyperinvariant tensor networks recently proposed by Evenbly. We elaborate our proposal on tensor chains in a tensor network by tiling $H^2$ space and provide a diagrammatical description for general multi-tensor constraints in terms of tensor chains, which forms a generalize…
We discuss the geometry of a class of tensor network states, called projected entangled pair states in the Physics literature. We provide initial results towards a question of Verstraete and Rizzi regarding the tensor network state of an $M \times N$ grid; we partially answer the question for a $2 \times N$ grid. We also study the $2 \times N$ grid sitting on a torus and provide initial results towards understanding the Zariski closure of the set of tensor network states associated to this graph. Finally, we give explicit tensors that provide optimal (using currently available methods) bounds …
Tensor networks have demonstrated significant value for machine learning in a myriad of different applications. However, optimizing tensor networks using standard gradient descent has proven to be difficult in practice. Tensor networks suffer from initialization problems resulting in exploding or vanishing gradients and require extensive hyperparameter tuning. Efforts to overcome these problems usually depend on specific network architectures, or ad hoc prescriptions. In this paper we address the problems of initialization and hyperparameter tuning, making it possible to train tensor networks …
This $Physics$ viewpoint considers recent work by Tilloy and Cirac [Phys. Rev. X 9, 021040 (2019), arXiv:1808.00976]; those authors overcame several past limitations in the generalization of tensor networks to the continuum and proposed a new class of continuous tensor network states (cMPS) which apply to spatial dimensions of two and higher.
We introduce a graphical user interface for constructing arbitrary tensor networks and specifying common operations like contractions or splitting, denoted GuiTeNet. Tensors are represented as nodes with attached legs, corresponding to the ordered dimensions of the tensor. GuiTeNet visualizes the current network, and instantly generates Python/NumPy source code for the hitherto sequence of user actions. Support for additional programming languages is planned for the future. We discuss the elementary operations on tensor networks used by GuiTeNet, together with high-level optimization strategie…
We discuss the variational optimization of a unitary tensor-network circuit with different network structures. The ansatz is performed based on a generalization of well-developed multi-scale entanglement renormalization algorithm and also the conjugate-gradient method with an effective line search. We present the benchmarking calculations for different network structures by studying the Heisenberg model in a strongly disordered magnetic field and a tensor-network $QR$-decomposition.

Tensor network algorithms seek to minimize correlations to compress the classical data representing quantum states. Tensor network algorithms and similar tools---called tensor network methods---form the backbone of modern numerical methods used to simulate many-body physics and have a further range of applications in machine learning. Finding and contracting tensor network states is a computational task which quantum computers might be used to accelerate. We present a quantum algorithm which returns a classical description of a rank-$r$ tensor network state satisfying an area law and approxima…
The evaluation of partition functions is a central problem in statistical physics. For lattice systems and other discrete models the partition function may be expressed as the contraction of a tensor network. Unfortunately computing such contractions is difficult, and many methods to make this tractable require periodic or otherwise structured networks. Here I present a new algorithm for contracting unstructured tensor networks. This method makes no assumptions about the structure of the network and performs well in both structured and unstructured cases so long as the correlation structure is…

TensorNetwork is an open source library for implementing tensor network algorithms in TensorFlow. We describe a tree tensor network (TTN) algorithm for approximating the ground state of either a periodic quantum spin chain (1D) or a lattice model on a thin torus (2D), and implement the algorithm using TensorNetwork. We use a standard energy minimization procedure over a TTN ansatz with bond dimension $χ$, with a computational cost that scales as $O(χ^4)$. Using bond dimension $χ\in [32,256]$ we compare the use of CPUs with GPUs and observe significant computational speed-ups, up to a factor of…
A sort of planar tensor networks with tensor constraints is investigated as a model for holography. We study the greedy algorithm generated by tensor constraints and propose the notion of critical protection (CP) against the action of greedy algorithm. For given tensor constraints, a CP tensor chain can be defined. We further find that the ability of quantum error correction (QEC), the non-flatness of entanglement spectrum (ES) and the correlation function can be quantitatively evaluated by the geometric structure of CP tensor chain. Four classes of tensor networks with different properties of…
We describe the use of tensor networks to numerically determine wave functions of interacting two-dimensional fermionic models in the continuum limit. We use two different tensor network states: one based on the numerical continuum limit of fermionic projected entangled pair states obtained via a tensor network formulation of multi-grid, and another based on the combination of the fermionic projected entangled pair state with layers of isometric coarse-graining transformations. We first benchmark our approach on the two-dimensional free Fermi gas then proceed to study the two-dimensional inter…
