We prove that a minimizer of the Yamabe functional does not exist for a sphere $\mathbb{S}^n$ of dimension $n \geq 3$, endowed with a standard edge-cone spherical metric of cone angle greater than or equal to $4π$, along a great circle of codimension two. When the cone angle along the singularity is smaller than $2π$, the corresponding metric is known to be a Yamabe metric, and we show that all Yamabe metrics in its conformal class are obtained from it by constant multiples and conformal diffeomorphisms preserving the singular set.
It is shown that if a minimal ruled surface admits a Kähler Yamabe minimizer, then this metric must be generalized Kähler-Einstein and the underlying holomorphic vector bundle of the ruled surface must be quasi-stable.
We let (M^m, g) be a closed smooth Riemannian manifold (m >1) with positive scalar curvature S_g, and prove that the Yamabe constant of (M \times R^n,g+g_E) is achieved by a metric in the conformal class of (g+g_E), where g_E is the Euclidean metric. We also show that the Yamabe quotient of (M \times R^n,g+g_E) is improved by Steiner symmetrization with respect to M. It follows from this last assertion that the dependence on R^n of the Yamabe minimizer of (M \times R^n,g+g_E) is radial.
We describe and partially solve a natural Yamabe-type problem on smooth metric measure spaces which interpolates between the Yamabe problem and the problem of finding minimizers for Perelman's $ν$-entropy. This problem reduces in all dimensions on Euclidean space to the characterization of the minimizers of the family of Gagliardo--Nirenberg--Sobolev inequalities studied by Del Pino and Dolbeault. We show that minimizers always exist on a compact manifold provided the so-called weighted Yamabe constant is strictly less than its value on Euclidean space. We also show that strict inequality hold…
Let $(M^n,g,e^{-ϕ}dV_g,e^{-ϕ}dA_g,m)$ be a compact smooth metric measure space with boundary with $n\geqslant 3$. In this article, we consider several Yamabe-type problems on a compact smooth metric measure space with or without boundary: uniqueness problem on the weighted Yamabe problem with boundary, characterization of the weighted Yamabe solitons with boundary and the existence of positive minimizers in the weighted Escobar quotient.
Let (M,g) be a compact manifold of dimension n greater or equals to 3. We suppose that g is a given metric in a precised Sobolev space and there is a point P in M and d>o such that g is smooth on the ball B(P,d). We define the second Yamabe invariant with singularities a the minimum of the second eigenvalue of the singular Yamabe operator over a generalized class of conformal metrics to g and of volume 1. We show that this operator is attained by a generalized metric, we deduce nodal solutions to a Yamabe type equation with singularities.
This work concerns with the existence and detailed asymptotic analysis of Type II singularities for solutions to complete non-compact conformally flat Yamabe flow with cylindrical behavior at infinity. We provide the specific blow-up rate of the maximum curvature and show that the solution converges, after blowing-up around the curvature maximum points, to a rotationally symmetric steady soliton. It is the first time that the steady soliton is shown to be a finite time singularity model of the Yamabe flow.
Given $(M,g_0)$ a closed Riemannian manifold and a nonempty closed subset $X$ in $M$, the singular $σ_k-$Yamabe problem asks for a complete metric $g$ on $M\backslash X$ conformal to $g_0$ with constant $σ_k-$curvature. The $σ_k-$curvature is defined as the $k-$th elementary symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Schouten tensor of a Riemannian metric. The main goal of this paper is to find solutions to the singular $σ_2-$Yamabe problem with isolated singularities in any compact non-degenerate manifold such that the Weyl tensor vanishing to sufficiently high order at the singular point. …
This paper carries out a renormalization of the volume of the Loewner-Nirenberg singular Yamabe metric in a given conformal class on a compact manifold-with-boundary. This generalizes the usual volume renormalization for Poincare-Einstein metrics. The coefficient of the log term in the volume expansion defines a conformally invariant energy generalizing the Willmore energy of a surface whose variational derivative with respect to variations of the boundary hypersurface is a multiple of the obstruction to smoothness of the singular Yamabe metric itself. The existence of such an energy answers a…
We apply scattering theory on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds to singular Yamabe metrics, applying the results to the study of the conformal geometry of compact manifolds with boundary. In particular, we define extrinsic versions of the conformally invariant powers of the Laplacian, or GJMS operators, on the boundary of any such manifold, along with associated extrinsic Q-curvatures. We use the existence and uniqueness of a singular Yamabe metric to define also nonlocal extrinsic fractional GJMS operators on the boundary, and draw other global conclusions about the scattering operator, inc…
We express two CR invariant surface area elements in terms of quantities in pseudohermitian geometry. We deduce the Euler-Lagrange equations of the associated energy functionals. Many solutions are given and discussed. In relation to the singular CR Yamabe problem, we show that one of the energy functionals appears as the coefficient (up to a constant multiple) of the log term in the associated volume renormalization.
This work addresses the {\em singularity formation} of complete non-compact solutions to the conformally flat Yamabe flow whose conformal factors have {\em cylindrical behavior at infinity}. Their singularity profiles happen to be {\em Yamabe solitons}, which are {\em self-similar solutions} to the fast diffusion equation satisfied by the conformal factor of the evolving metric. The self-similar profile is determined by the second order asymptotics at infinity of the initial data which is matched with that of the corresponding self-similar solution. Solutions may become extinct at the extincti…
In this paper we study the local behaviour of admissible metrics in the k-Yamabe problem on compact Riemannian manifolds $(M, g_0)$ of dimension $n\ge 3$. For $n/2 <k<n$, we prove a sharp Harnack inequality for admissible metrics when $(M,g_0)$ is not conformally equivalent to the unit sphere $S^n$ and that the set of all such metrics is compact. When $(M,g_0)$ is the unit sphere we prove there is a unique admissible metric with singularity. As a consequence we prove an existence theorem for equations of Yamabe type, thereby recovering a recent result of Gursky and Viaclovski on the solvabilit…
A conformal geometry determines a distinguished, potentially singular, variant of the usual Yamabe problem, where the conformal factor can change sign. When a smooth solution does change sign, its zero locus is a smoothly embedded separating hypersurface that, in dimension three, is necessarily a Willmore energy minimiser or, in higher dimensions, satisfies a conformally invariant analog of the Willmore equation. In any case the zero locus is critical for a conformal functional that generalises the total Q-curvature by including extrinsic data. These observations lead to some interesting globa…
We obtain uncountably many periodic solutions to the singular Yamabe problem on a round sphere, that blow up along a great circle. These are (complete) constant scalar curvature metrics on the complement of $S^1$ inside $S^m$, $m\geq 5$, that are conformal to the round (incomplete) metric and "periodic" in the sense of being invariant under a discrete group of conformal transformations. These solutions come from bifurcating branches of constant scalar curvature metrics on compact quotients of $S^m \setminus S^1\cong S^{m-2}\times H^2$.
We consider the Yamabe equation on a complete non-compact Riemannian manifold and study the condition of stability of solutions. If $(M^m,g)$ is a closed manifold of constant positive scalar curvature, which we normalize to be $m(m-1)$, we consider the Riemannian product with the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space: $(M^m \times \mathbf{R}^n, g+ g_E)$. And study the solution of the Yamabe equation which depends only on the Euclidean factor. We show that there exists a constant $λ(m,n)$ such that the solution is stable if and only if $λ_1 \geq λ(m,n)$, where $λ_1$ is the first positive eigenvalue o…
We study positive solutions of the Yamabe equation with isolated singularity and prove the existence of solutions with prescribed asymptotic expansions near singular points and an arbitrarily high order of approximation.
We study the convergence of complete non-compact conformally flat solutions to the Yamabe flow to Yamabe steady solitons. We also prove the existence of Type II singularities which develop at either a finite time $T$ or as $t \to +\infty$.
We study asymptotic behaviors of positive solutions to the Yamabe equation and the $σ$k-Yamabe equation near isolated singular points and establish expansions up to arbitrary orders. Such results generalize an earlier pioneering work by Caffarelli, Gidas, and Spruck, and a work by Korevaar, Mazzeo, Pacard, and Schoen, on the Yamabe equation, and a work by Han, Li, and Teixeira on the $σ_k$-Yamabe equation. The study is based on a combination of classification of global singular solutions and an analysis of linearized operators at these global singular solutions. Such linearized equations are u…
We derive a formula of Chern-Gauss-Bonnet type for the Euler characteristic of a four dimensional manifold-with-boundary in terms of the geometry of the Loewner-Nirenberg singular Yamabe metric in a prescribed conformal class. The formula involves the renormalized volume and a boundary integral. It is shown that if the boundary is umbilic, then the sum of the renormalized volume and the boundary integral is a conformal invariant. Analogous results are proved for asymptotically hyperbolic metrics in dimension four for which the second elementary symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Scho…
We construct singular solutions to the Yamabe equation using a reduction of the problem in an equivariant setting. This provides a non-trivial geometric example for which the analysis is simpler than in Mazzeo-Pacard program. Our construction provides also a non-trivial example of a weak solution to the Yamabe problem involving an equation with (smooth) coefficients.
We construct Delaunay-type solutions for the fractional Yamabe problem with an isolated singularity $(-Δ)^γw = c_{n, γ} w^{\frac{n+2γ}{n-2γ}}, w>0 \ \mbox{in} \ \mathbb{R}^n \backslash \{0\}$ We follow a variational approach, in which the key is the computation of the fractional Laplacian in polar coordinates.
In this paper we construct singular solutions to the critical Dirac equation on spheres. More precisely, first we construct solutions admitting two points singularities that we call Delaunay-type solutions because of their similarities with the Delaunay solutions constructed for the singular Yamabe problem in \cite{MP1 , Schoen1989}. Then we construct another kind of singular solutions admitting a great circle as a singular set. These solutions are the building blocks for singular solutions on a general Spin manifold.
If a smooth compact 4-manifold M admits a Kaehler-Einstein metric g of positive scalar curvature, Gursky showed that its conformal class [g] is an absolute minimizer of the Weyl functional among all conformal classes with positive Yamabe constant. Here we prove that, with the same hypotheses, [g] also minimizes of the Weyl functional on a different open set of conformal classes, most of which have negative Yamabe constant. An analogous minimization result is then proved for Einstein metrics g which are Hermitian, but not Kaehler.
We discuss the singular Yamabe obstruction $\mathcal{B}_3$ of a hypersurface in a four-dimensional general background. We derive various explicit formula for $\mathcal{B}_3$ from the original definition. We relate these formulas to corresponding formulas in the literature. The proofs are elementary.
In the first part of this thesis, we study the Yamabe problem with singularities, that we can announce as follow: Given a compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$, find a constant scalar curvature metric, conformal to $g$, when $g$ has not necessarily the usual regularity (it can be $C^1$). To solve this problem, we start the study of the Yamabe type equations. We show that all the known properties in the smooth case are still valid. Under some assumptions, we prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions. The second part is dedicated to the Hebey-Vaugon conjecture, stated in their paper about th…
Let (M,g) be a compact oriented Riemannian manifold with an incomplete edge singularity. This article shows that it is possible to evolve g by the Yamabe flow within a class of singular edge metrics. As the main analytic step we establish parabolic Schauder-type estimates for the heat operator on certain Hölder spaces adapted to the singular edge geometry. We apply these estimates to obtain local existence for a variety of quasilinear equations, including the Yamabe flow. This provides a setup for a subsequent discussion of the Yamabe problem using flow techniques in the singular setting.
This article presents an analysis of the normalized Yamabe flow starting at and preserving a class of compact Riemannian manifolds with incomplete edge singularities and negative Yamabe invariant. Our main results include uniqueness, long-time existence and convergence of the edge Yamabe flow starting at a metric with everywhere negative scalar curvature. Our methods include novel maximum principle results on the singular edge space without using barrier functions. Moreover, our uniform bounds on solutions are established by a new ansatz without in any way using or redeveloping Krylov-Safonov …
We present a gluing construction which adds, via a localized deformation, exactly Delaunay ends to generic metrics with constant positive scalar curvature. This provides time-symmetric initial data sets for the vacuum Einstein equations with positive cosmological constant with exactly Kottler-Schwarzschild-de Sitter ends, extending the results in arXiv:0710.3365 [gr-qc].
We develop the calculus for hypersurface variations based on variation of the hypersurface defining function. This is used to show that the functional gradient of a new Willmore-like, conformal hypersurface energy agrees exactly with the obstruction to smoothly solving the singular Yamabe problem for conformally compact four-manifolds. We give explicit hypersurface formulae for both the energy functional and the obstruction.
We study the existence of conformal metrics on non-compact Riemannian manifolds with non-compact boundary, which are complete as metric spaces and have negative constant scalar curvature in the interior and negative constant mean curvature on the boundary. These metrics are constructed on smooth manifolds obtained by removing d-dimensional submanifolds from certain n-dimensional compact spaces locally modelled on generalized solid cones. We prove the existence of such metrics if and only if d>(n-2)/2. Our main theorem is inspired by the classical results by Aviles-McOwen and Loewner-Nirenberg …
In this paper we develop an approach to conformal geometry of piecewise flat metrics on manifolds. In particular, we formulate the combinatorial Yamabe problem for piecewise flat metrics. In the case of surfaces, we define the combinatorial Yamabe flow on the space of all piecewise flat metrics associated to a triangulated surface. We show that the flow either develops removable singularities or converges exponentially fast to a constant combinatorial curvature metric. If the singularity develops, we show that the singularity is always removable by a surgery procedure on the triangulation. We …
The negative case of the Singular Yamabe Problem concerns the existence and behavior of complete metrics with constant negative scalar curvature on the complement of a closed set in a compact Riemannian manifold which are conformally equivalent to a smooth metric on this compact manifold. When the closed set is a smooth submanifold, it is known by the results of Loewner-Nirenberg and Aviles-McOwen that there exists such a complete metric if and only if $d > (n-2)/2$, and in general the Hausdorff dimension of the set must be at least $(n-2)/2$. In this paper, we show that the existence of such …
This paper deals with the conformal deformation of the standard metric in a domain on the sphere to a complete metric with the constant scalar curvature. The problem of description of domains allowing such deformation originates in the works of Loewner and Nirenberg, and Schoen and Yau concerned with the locally conformally flat manifolds. The goal of this work is to apply ideas from the nonlinear potential theory to the problem. They allow, in particular, to solve the problem in the case of the constant negative scalar curvature.
We answer affirmatively a question of Aviles posed in 1983, concerning the construction of singular solutions of semilinear equations without using phase-plane analysis. Fully exploiting the semilinearity and the stability of the linearized operator in any dimension, our techniques involve a careful gluing in weighted $L^\infty$ spaces that handles multiple occurrences of criticality, without the need of derivative estimates. The above solution constitutes an \emph{Ansatz} for the Yamabe problem with a prescribed singular set of maximal dimension $(n-2)/2$, for which, using the same machinery,…
We improve higher-order CR Sobolev inequalities on $S^{2n+1}$ under the vanishing of higher order moments of the volume element. As an application, we give a new and direct proof of the classification of minimizers of the CR invariant higher-order Sobolev inequalities. In the same spirit, we prove almost sharp Sobolev inequalities for GJMS operators to general CR manifolds, and obtain the existence of minimizers in $C^{2k}(N)$ of higher-order CR Yamabe-type problems when $Y_k(N)<Y_k(\mathbb{H}^n)$.
The study of the $k$-th elementary symmetric function of the Weyl-Schouten curvature tensor of a Riemannian metric, the so called $σ_k$ curvature, has produced many fruitful results in conformal geometry in recent years. In these studies, the deforming conformal factor is considered to be a solution of a fully nonlinear elliptic PDE. Important advances have been made in recent years in the understanding of the analytic behavior of solutions of the PDE. However, the singular behavior of these solutions, which is important in describing many important questions in conformal geometry, is little u…
We study a particular class of open manifolds. In the category of Riemannian manifolds these are complete manifolds with cylindrical ends. We give a natural setting for the conformal geometry on such manifolds including an appropriate notion of the cylindrical Yamabe constant/invariant. This leads to a corresponding version of the Yamabe problem on cylindrical manifolds. We affirmatively solve this Yamabe problem: we prove the existence of minimizing metrics and analyze their singularities near infinity. These singularities turn out to be of very particular type: either almost conical or almos…
We introduce new invariants of a Riemannian singular space, the local Yamabe and Sobolev constants, and then go on to prove a general version of the Yamabe theorem under that the global Yamabe invariant of the space is strictly less than one or the other of these local invariants. This rests on a small number of structural assumptions about the space and of the behavior of the scalar curvature function on its smooth locus. The second half of this paper shows how this result applies in the category of smoothly stratified pseudomanifolds, and we also prove sharp regularity for the solutions on t…
Motivated by the work of Li and Mantoulidis, we study singular metrics which are uniformly Euclidean $(L^\infty)$ on a compact manifold $M^n$ ($n\ge 3$) with negative Yamabe invariant $σ(M)$. It is well-known that if $g$ is a smooth metric on $M$ with unit volume and with scalar curvature $R(g)\ge σ(M)$, then $g$ is Einstein. We show, in all dimensions, the same is true for metrics with edge singularities with cone angles $\leq 2π$ along codimension-2 submanifolds. We also show in three dimension, if the Yamabe invariant of connected sum of two copies of $M$ attains its minimum, then the same …
We construct large families of initial data sets for the vacuum Einstein equations with positive cosmological constant which contain exactly Delaunay ends; these are non-trivial initial data sets which coincide with those for the Kottler-Schwarzschild-de Sitter metrics in regions of infinite extent. From the purely Riemannian geometric point of view, this produces complete, constant positive scalar curvature metrics with exact Delaunay ends which are not globally Delaunay. The ends can be used to construct new compact initial data sets via gluing constructions. The construction provided applie…
A classical theorem in conformal geometry states that on a manifold with non-positive Yamabe invariant, a smooth metric achieving the invariant must be Einstein. In this work, we extend it to the singular case and show that in all dimension, if a continuous metric is smooth outside a compact set of high co-dimension and achieves the Yamabe invariant, then the metric is Einstein away from the singularity and can be extended to be smooth on the manifold in a suitable sense. As an application of the method, we prove a Positive Mass Theorem for asymptotically flat manifolds with analogous singular…
We consider the Yamabe invariant of a compact orbifold with finitely many singular points. We prove a fundamental inequality for the estimate of the invariant from above, which also includes a criterion for the non-positivity of it. Moreover, we give a sufficient condition for the equality in the inequality. In order to prove it, we also solve the orbifold Yamabe problem under a certain condition. We use these results to give some exact computations of the Yamabe invariant of compact orbifolds.
Complete, conformally flat metrics of constant positive scalar curvature on the complement of $k$ points in the $n$-sphere, $k \ge 2$, $n \ge 3$, were constructed by R\. Schoen [S2]. We consider the problem of determining the moduli space of all such metrics. All such metrics are asymptotically periodic, and we develop the linear analysis necessary to understand the nonlinear problem. This includes a Fredholm theory and asymptotic regularity theory for the Laplacian on asymptotically periodic manifolds, which is of independent interest. The main result is that the moduli space is a locally rea…
Given an isoparametric function $f$ on the $n$-dimensional sphere, we consider the space of functions $w\circ f$ to reduce the Yamabe equation on the round sphere into a singular ODE on $w$ in the interval $[0,π]$, of the form $w" + (h(r)/\sin r)w'+λ(\vert w\vert^{4/n-2}w - w)=0$, where $h$ is a monotone function with exactly one zero on $[0,π]$ and $λ>0$ is a constant. The natural boundary conditions in order to obtain smooth solutions are $w'(0)=0$ and $w'(π)=0$. We show that for any positive integer $k$ there exists a solution with exactly $k$-zeroes yielding solutions to the Yamabe equatio…
