There are strong reasons to believe that global symmetries of quantum theories cannot be exact in the presence of gravity. While this has been argued at the qualitative level, establishing a quantitative statement is more challenging. In this work we take new steps towards quantifying symmetry violation in EFTs with gravity. First, we evaluate global charge violation by microscopic black holes present in a thermal system, which represents an irreducible, universal effect at finite temperature. Second, based on general QFT considerations, we propose that local symmetry-violating processes should be faster than black hole-induced processes at any sub-Planckian temperature. Such a proposal can be seen as part of the "swampland" program to constrain EFTs emerging from quantum gravity. Considering an EFT perspective, we formulate a conjecture which requires the existence of operators violating global symmetry and places quantitative bounds on them. We study the interplay of our conjecture with emergent symmetries in QFT. In models where gauged U(1)'s enforce accidental symmetries, we find that constraints from the Weak Gravity Conjecture can ensure that our conjecture is satisfied. We also study the consistency of the conjecture with QFT models of emergent symmetries such as extradimensional localization, the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism, and the clockwork mechanism.
Soft theorems can be recast as Ward identities of asymptotic symmetries. We review such relation for the leading and subleading soft graviton theorems in arbitrary even dimensions. While soft theorems are trivially generalized to dimensions higher than four, the charges of asymptotic symmetries are plagued by divergences requiring a renormalization. We argue that the renormalized charges of these symmetries can be determined by rewriting soft theorems as Ward identities. In order to show that the charges of such identities generate asymptotic symmetries, we propose a suitable commutation relat…
In four-dimensional axion electrodynamics, a Chern-Simons coupling of the form $θF \wedge F$ leads to a higher-group global symmetry between background gauge fields. At the same time, such a Chern-Simons coupling leads to a mixing between the Weak Gravity Conjectures for the axion and the gauge field, so that the charged excitations of a Weak Gravity Conjecture-satisfying axion string will also satisfy the Weak Gravity Conjecture for the gauge field. In this paper, we argue that these higher-group symmetries and this phenomenon of Weak Gravity Conjecture mixing are related to one another. We s…

We present a three-dimensional Chern-Simons gravity based on a deformation of the Maxwell algebra. This symmetry allows introduction of a non-vanishing torsion to the Maxwell Chern-Simons theory, whose action recovers the Mielke-Baelker model for particular values of the coupling constants. By considering suitable boundary conditions, we show that the asymptotic symmetry is given by the $\widehat{\mathfrak{bms}}_3\oplus\mathfrak{vir}$ algebra with three independent central charges.
Three-dimensional colored gravity refers to nonabelian isospin extension of Einstein gravity. We investigate the asymptotic symmetry algebra of the $SU(N)$-colored gravity in (2+1)-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime. Formulated by the Chern-Simons theory with $SU(N,N)\times SU(N,N)$ gauge group, the theory contains graviton, $SU(N)$ Chern-Simons gauge fields and massless spin-two multiplets in the $SU(N)$ adjoint representation, thus extending diffeomorphism to colored, nonabelian counterpart. We identify the asymptotic symmetry as Poisson algebra of generators associated with the residual g…
We consider the curvatures 2 form asociated with AdSL4 valued one-form gauge connetion, and then we construct a four-dimensional action that generalize the Einstein-Hilbert gravity. It is shown that the Maxwell extension of Einstein gravity can be obtained from AdSL4-gravity making use of the Inonu-Wigner contraction method. In the same way, by gauging the AdSL5 spacetime algebra, the Einstein-Hilbert gravity is extended including the vector fields kab and ha which are associated with non-Abelian tensors and non Abelian vectors charges in the AdSL5 algebra. The B5 extension of Einstein gravity…
We study six dimensional supergravity theories with superconformal sectors (SCFTs). Instances of such theories can be engineered using type IIB strings, or more generally F-Theory, which translates field theoretic constraints to geometry. Specifically, we study the fate of the discrete 2-form global symmetries of the SCFT sectors. For both $(2,0)$ and $(1,0)$ theories we show that whenever the charge lattice of the SCFT sectors is non-primitively embedded into the charge lattice of the supergravity theory, there is a subgroup of these 2-form symmetries that remains unbroken by BPS strings. By …
Due to seminal works of Weinberg, Cachazo and Strominger we know that tree level quantum gravity amplitudes satisfy three factorization constraints. Building on previous works which relate two of these constraints to symmetries of quantum gravity at null infinity, we present rather strong evidence that the third constraint is also equivalent to a new set of symmetries of (perturbative) quantum gravity. Our analysis implies that the symmetry group of quantum gravity may be even richer than the BMS group (or infinite dimensional extension thereof) previously considered.
The set of solutions to the AdS$_3$ Einstein gravity with Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions is known to be a family of metrics labeled by two arbitrary periodic functions, respectively left and right-moving. It turns out that there exists an appropriate presymplectic form which vanishes on-shell. This promotes this set of metrics to a phase space in which the Brown-Henneaux asymptotic symmetries become symplectic symmetries in the bulk of spacetime. Moreover, any element in the phase space admits two global Killing vectors. We show that the conserved charges associated with these Killing vect…
By applying the stress-tensor-scalar operator product expansion (OPE) twice, we search for algebraic structures in $d=4$ conformal field theories (CFTs) with a pure Einstein gravity dual. We find that a rescaled mode operator defined by an integral of the stress tensor $T^{++}$ on a $d=2$ plane satisfies a Virasoro-like algebra when the dimension of the scalar is large. The structure is enhanced to include a Kac-Moody-type algebra if we incorporate the $T^{--}$ component. In our scheme, the central terms are finite. It remains challenging to directly compute the stress-tensor sector of $d=4$ s…
The existing equivalence between (generalized) BMS Ward identities with leading and subleading soft graviton theorems is extended to the case where the scattering particles are massive scalars. By extending the action of generalized BMS group off null infinity at late times, we show that there is a natural action of such group not only on the radiative data at null infinity but also on the scattering data of the massive scalar field. This leads to a formulation of Ward identities associated to the generalized BMS group when the scattering states are massive scalars or massless gravitons and we…
Conserved charges in theories with gauge symmetries are supported on codimension-2 surfaces in the bulk spacetime. It has recently been suggested that various classical formulations of gravity dynamics display different symmetries, and paying attention to the maximal such symmetry could have important consequences to further elucidate the quantization of gravity. After establishing an algebraic off-shell derivation of the maximal closed subalgebra of the full bulk diffeomorphisms in the presence of an isolated corner, we show how to geometrically describe the latter and its embedding in spacet…
We study asymptotic symmetry algebras for classes of three dimensional supergravities with and without cosmological constant. In the first part we generalise some of the non-Dirichlet boundary conditions of $AdS_3$ gravity to extended supergravity theories, and compute their asymptotic symmetries. In particular, we show that the boundary conditions proposed to holographically describe the chiral induced gravity and Liouville gravity do admit extension to the supergravity contexts with appropriate superalgebras as their asymptotic symmetry algebras. In the second part we consider generalisation…
Defining a new r-matrix compatible with the scalar product at the basis of the Chern-Simons action for a particle coupled to (2+1) Lorentzian gravity with cosmological constant, I show how deformed symmetries of $κ$-de Sitter and, in the vanishing cosmological limit, of $κ$-Poincaré kind, arise naturally as quantum-deformation of three dimensional gravity. I obtain moreover the non-commutative spacetime associated to these kinds of symmetries.
We consider the Generalized Minimal Massive Gravity (GMMG) model in the first order formalism. We show that all the solutions of the Einstein gravity with negative cosmological constants solve the equations of motion of considered model. Then we find an expression for the off-shell conserved charges of this model. By considering the near horizon geometry of a three dimensional black hole in the Gaussian null coordinates, we find near horizon conserved charges and their algebra. The obtained algebra is centrally extended. By writing the algebra of conserved charges in terms of Fourier modes and…
Space-time symmetries are a crucial ingredient of any theoretical model in physics. Unlike internal symmetries, which may or may not be gauged and/or spontaneously broken, space-time symmetries do not admit any ambiguity: they are gauged by gravity, and any conceivable physical system (other than the vacuum) is bound to break at least some of them. Motivated by this observation, we study how to couple gravity with the Goldstone fields that non-linearly realize spontaneously broken space-time symmetries. This can be done in complete generality by weakly gauging the Poincare symmetry group in th…
We draw attention to a class of generalized global symmetries, which we call "Chern-Weil global symmetries," that arise ubiquitously in gauge theories. The Noether currents of these Chern-Weil global symmetries are given by wedge products of gauge field strengths, such as $F_2 \wedge H_3$ and $\text{tr}(F_2^2)$, and their conservation follows from Bianchi identities. As a result, they are not easy to break. However, it is widely believed that exact global symmetries are not allowed in a consistent theory of quantum gravity. As a result, any Chern-Weil global symmetry in a low-energy effective …
The question whether global symmetries can be realized in quantum-gravity-matter-systems has far-reaching phenomenological consequences. Here, we collect evidence that within an asymptotically safe context, discrete global symmetries of the form $\mathbb{Z}_n$, $n>4$, cannot be realized in a near-perturbative regime. In contrast, an effective-field-theory approach to quantum gravity might feature such symmetries, providing a mechanism to generate mass hierarchies in the infrared without the need for additional fine-tuning.
It is an open question whether fluctuations at the Planck scale in a non-perturbative theory of quantum gravity behave in such a way that the resulting semi-classical geometry can be modelled by a space that admits (approximate) Killing symmetries. We have investigated whether the notion of approximate Killing vector fields is suitable to address this question in lattice theories of quantum gravity, such as (Causal) Dynamical Triangulations. We show that it is possible to construct quantum observables related to approximate Killing vector fields using the framework of Discrete Exterior Calculu…
