Motivated by the study of a parasite infection in a cell line, we introduce a general class of Markov processes for the modelling of population dynamics. The population process evolves as a diffusion with positive jumps whose rate is a function of the population size. It also undergoes catastrophic events which kill a fraction of the population, at a rate depending on the population state. We study the long time behaviour of this class of processes.
We consider continuous state branching processes (CSBP) with additional multiplicative jumps modeling dramatic events in a random environment. These jumps are described by a Lévy process with bounded variation paths. We construct a process of this class as the unique solution of a stochastic differential equation. The quenched branching property of the process allows us to derive quenched and annealed results and to observe new asymptotic behaviors. We characterize the Laplace exponent of the process as the solution of a backward ordinary differential equation and establish the probability of …
In this note, we study the asymptotic behaviour near extinction of (sub-) critical continuous state branching processes. In particular, we establish an analogue of Khintchin's law of the iterated logarithm near extinction time for a continuous state branching process whose branching mechanism satisfies a given condition and its reflected process at its infimum.
We establish a sufficient condition for the tightness of a sequence of stochastic processes. Our condition makes it possible to study processes with accumulations of fixed times of discontinuity. Our motivation comes from the study of processes in varying or random environment. We demonstrate the usefulness of our condition on two examples: Galton Watson branching processes in varying environment and logistic branching processes with catastrophes.
We establish a general sufficient condition for a sequence of Galton Watson branching processes in varying environment to converge weakly. This condition extends previous results by allowing offspring distributions to have infinite variance, which leads to a new and subtle phenomena when the process goes through a bottleneck and also in terms of time scales. Our assumptions are stated in terms of pointwise convergence of a triplet of two real-valued functions and a measure. The limiting process is characterized by a backwards ordinary differential equation satisfied by its Laplace exponent, wh…
In this paper, we introduce a family of processes with values on the nonnegative integers that describes the dynamics of populations where individuals are allowed to have different types of interactions. The types of interactions that we consider include pairwise interaction, such as competition, annihilation and cooperation; and interaction among several individuals that can be considered as catastrophes. We call such families of processes \textit{branching processes with interactions}. Our aim is to study their long term behaviour under a specific regime of the pairwise interaction parameter…
We consider continuous state branching processes that are perturbed by a Brownian motion. These processes are constructed as the unique strong solution of a stochastic differential equation. The long-term extinction and explosion behaviours are studied. In the stable case, the extinction and explosion probabilities are given explicitly. We find three regimes for the asymptotic behaviour of the explosion probability and, as in the case of branching processes in random environment, we find five regimes for the asymptotic behaviour of the extinction probability. In the supercritical regime, we st…
This article studies the quasi-stationary behaviour of population processes with unbounded absorption rate, including one-dimensional birth and death processes with catastrophes and multi-dimensional birth and death processes, modeling biological populations in interaction. To handle this situation, we develop original non-linear Lyapunov criteria. We obtain the exponential convergence in total variation of the conditional distributions to a unique quasi-stationary distribution, uniformly with respect to the initial distribution. Our results cover all one-dimensional birth and death processes …
Consider a heavy-tailed branching process (denoted by $Z_{n}$) in random environments, under the condition which infers that $\mathbb{E}\log m(ξ_{0})=\infty$. We show that (1) there exists no proper $c_{n}$ such that $\{Z_{n}/c_{n}\}$ has a proper, non-degenerate limit, (2) normalized by a sequence of functions, a proper limit can be obtained, i.e., $y_{n}\left(\barξ,Z_{n}(\barξ)\right)$ converges almost surely to a random variable $Y(\barξ)$, where $Y\in(0,1)~η$-a.s., (3) finally, we give a necessary and sufficient conditions for the almost sure convergence of $\left\{\frac{U(\barξ,Z_{n}(\bar…
Limit theorems for strongly and intermediately supercritical branching processes in Markovian environment with linear fractional offspring distributions
Consider the population model with infinite size associated to subcritical continuous-state branching processes (CSBP). Individuals reproduce independently according to the same subcritical offspring distribution. We study the long-term behaviour of the ancestral lineages as time goes to the past and show that the flow of ancestral lineages, properly renormalized, converges almost surely to the inverse of a drift-free subordinator whose Laplace exponent is explicit in terms of the branching mechanism. We provide an interpretation in terms of the genealogy of the population. In particular, we s…
This paper studies: (i) the long time behaviour of the empirical distribution of age and normalised position of an age dependent critical branching Markov process conditioned on non-extinction; and (ii) the super-process limit of a sequence of age dependent critical branching Brownian motions.
The forest of mutations associated to a multitype branching forest is obtained by merging together all vertices of its clusters and by preserving connections between them. We first show that the forest of mutations of any mulitype branching forest is itself a branching forest. Then we give its progeny distribution and describe some of its crucial properties in terms the initial progeny distribution. We also obtain the limiting behaviour of the number of mutations both when the total number of individuals tends to infinity and when the number of roots tends to infinity. The continuous time case…
For a subcritical Galton-Watson process $(ζ_n)$, it is well known that under an $X \log X$ condition, the quotient $P(ζ_n > 0)/ Eζ_n$ has a finite positive limit. There is an analogous result for a (one-dimensional) supercritical branching random walk: when $a$ is in the so-called subcritical speed area, the probability of presence around $na$ in the $n$-th generation is asymptotically proportional to the corresponding expectation. In Rouault (1993) this result was stated under a natural $X \log X$ assumption on the offspring point process and a (unnatural) condition on the offspring mean. Her…
We consider the population model associated to continuous state branching processes and we are interested in the so-called Eve property that asserts the existence of an ancestor with an overwhelming progeny at large times, and more generally, in the possible behaviours of the frequencies among the population at large times. In this paper, we classify all the possible behaviours according to the branching mechanism of the continuous state branching process.
We consider a branching system consisting of particles moving according to a Markov family in $\Rd$ and undergoing subcritical branching with a constant rate $V>0$. New particles immigrate to the system according to homogeneous space-time Poisson random field. The process of the fluctuations of the rescaled occupation time is studied with very mild assumptions on the Markov family. In this general setting a functional central limit theorem is proved. The subcriticality of the branching law is crucial for the limit behaviour and in a sense overwhelms the properties of the particles' motion. It …
We consider a branching Brownian motion in which binary fission takes place only when particles are at the origin at a rate β> 0 on the local time scale. We obtain results regarding the asymptotic behaviour of the number of particles above λt at time t, for λ> 0. As a corollary, we establish the almost sure asymptotic speed of the rightmost particle. We also prove a Strong Law of Large Numbers for this catalytic branching Brownian motion.
We study supercritical branching processes under the influence of an i.i.d. emigration component. We provide conditions, under which the lifetime of the process is finite respectively has a finite expectation. A new version of the Kesten-Stigum theorem is obtained and the extinction probability for a large initial population size is related to the tail behaviour of the emigration.
We consider a continuous-time branching random walk in the inhomogeneous breeding potential $β|.|^p$, where $β> 0$, $p \geq 0$. We prove that the population almost surely explodes in finite time if $p > 1$ and doesn't explode if $p \leq 1$. In the non-explosive cases, we determine the asymptotic behaviour of the rightmost particle.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of the survival probability of a multitype branching process in random environment. The class of processes we consider here corresponds, in the one-dimensional situation, to the strongly subcritical case. We also prove a conditional limit theorem describing the distribution of the number of particles in the process given its survival for a long time.
Results on the behaviour of the rightmost particle in the $n$th generation in the branching random walk are reviewed and the phenomenon of anomalous spreading speeds, noticed recently in related deterministic models, is considered. The relationship between such results and certain coupled reaction-diffusion equations is indicated.
In this article we contribute to the moment analysis of branching processes in catalytic media. The many-to-few lemma based on the spine technique is used to derive a system of (discrete space) partial differential equations for the number of particles in a variation of constants formulation. The long-time behaviour is then deduced from renewal theorems and induction.
We consider a particle system in continuous time, discrete population, with spatial motion and nonlocal branching. The offspring's weights and their number may depend on the mother's weight. Our setting captures, for instance, the processes indexed by a Galton-Watson tree. Using a size-biased auxiliary process for the empirical measure, we determine this asymptotic behaviour. We also obtain a large population approximation as weak solution of a growth-fragmentation equation. Several examples illustrate our results.
We study a continuous-time branching random walk on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$, $d\in \mathbb{N}$, with a single source of branching, that is the lattice point where the birth and death of particles can occur. The random walk is assumed to be homogeneous, symmetric and irreducible but, in contrast to previous investigations, the random walk transition intensities $a(x,y)$ decrease as $|y-x|^{-(d+α)}$ for $|y-x|\to \infty$, where $α\in(0,2)$, that leads to an infinite variance of the random walk jumps. The~mechanism of the birth and death of particles at the source is governed by a continuous…
Limit behaviour of temporal and contemporaneous aggregations of independent copies of a stationary multitype Galton-Watson branching process with immigration is studied in the so-called iterated and simultaneous cases, respectively. In both cases, the limit process is a zero mean Brownian motion with the same covariance function under third order moment conditions on the branching and immigration distributions. We specialize our results for generalized integer-valued autoregressive processes and single-type Galton-Watson processes with immigration as well.
Let $(Z_n)_{n\geqslant 0}$ be a branching process in a random environment defined by a Markov chain $(X_n)_{n\geqslant 0}$ with values in a finite state space $\mathbb X$ starting at $X_0=i \in\mathbb X$. We extend from the i.i.d. environment to the Markovian one the classical classification of the branching processes into critical and strongly, intermediate and weakly subcritical states. In all these cases, we study the asymptotic behaviour of the probability that $Z_n>0$ as $n\to+\infty$.
In this article, we study a branching random walk in an environment which depends on the time. This time-inhomogeneous environment consists of a sequence of macroscopic time intervals, in each of which the law of reproduction remains constant. We prove that the asymptotic behaviour of the maximal displacement in this process consists of a first ballistic order, given by the solution of an optimization problem under constraints, a negative logarithmic correction, plus stochastically bounded fluctuations.
We consider the limiting behaviour of the point processes associated with a branching random walk with supercritical branching mechanism and balanced regularly varying step size. Assuming that the underlying branching process satisfies Kesten-Stigum condition, it is shown that the point process sequence of properly scaled displacements coming from the n-th generation converges weakly to a Cox cluster process. In particular, we establish that a conjecture of Brunet and Derrida (2011) remains valid in this setup, investigate various other issues mentioned in their paper and recover the main resu…
We encode the genealogy of a continuous-state branching process associated with a branching mechanism $Ψ$ - or $Ψ$-CSBP in short - using a stochastic flow of partitions. This encoding holds for all branching mechanisms and appears as a very tractable object to deal with asymptotic behaviours and convergences. In particular we study the so-called Eve property - the existence of an ancestor from which the entire population descends asymptotically - and give a necessary and sufficient condition on the $Ψ$-CSBP for this property to hold. Finally, we show that the flow of partitions unifies the loo…
We are interested in the survival probability of a population modeled by a critical branching process in an i.i.d. random environment. We assume that the random walk associated with the branching process is oscillating and satisfies a Spitzer condition $\mathbf{P}(S_{n}>0)\rightarrow ρ,\ n\rightarrow \infty $, which is a standard condition in fluctuation theory of random walks. Unlike the previously studied case $ρ\in (0,1)$, we investigate the case where the offspring distribution is in the domain of attraction of a stable law with parameter $1$, which implies that $ρ=0$ or $1$. We find the a…
We consider a branching particle system where each particle moves as an independent Brownian motion and breeds at a rate proportional to its distance from the origin raised to the power $p$, for $p\in[0,2)$. The asymptotic behaviour of the right-most particle for this system is already known; in this article we give large deviations probabilities for particles following "difficult" paths, growth rates along "easy" paths, the total population growth rate, and we derive the optimal paths which particles must follow to achieve this growth rate.
We consider a branching-selection particle system on the real line. In this model the total size of the population at time $n$ is limited by $\exp\left(a n^{1/3}\right)$. At each step $n$, every individual dies while reproducing independently, making children around their current position according to i.i.d. point processes. Only the $\exp\left(a(n+1)^{1/3}\right)$ rightmost children survive to form the $(n+1)^\mathrm{th}$ generation. This process can be seen as a generalisation of the branching random walk with selection of the $N$ rightmost individuals, introduced by Brunet and Derrida. We o…
We study the asymptotic behaviour of the survival probability of a multi-type branching processes in random environment. The class of processes we consider corresponds, in the one-dimensional situation, to the intermediately subcritical case. We show under rather general assumptions on the form of the offspring generating functions of particles that the probability of survival up to generation $n$ of the process initiated at moment zero by a single particle of any type is of order $λ^{n}n^{-1/2}$ for large $n,$ where $λ\in (0,1)$ is a constant specified by the Lyapunov exponent of the mean mat…
In this paper, we introduce a two-sex controlled branching model to describe the interaction between predator and prey populations with sexual reproduction. This process is a two-type branching process, where the first type corresponds to the predator population and the second one to the prey population. While each population is described via a two-sex branching model, the interaction and survival of both groups is modelled through control functions depending on the current number of individuals of each type in the ecosystem. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the ultimate exti…
In this paper we consider a branching particle system consisting of particles moving according to the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process in R^d and undergoing a binary, supercritical branching with a constant rate λ>0. This system is known to fulfil a law of large numbers (under exponential scaling). In the paper we prove the corresponding central limit theorem. Moreover, in the second part of the paper we consider U-statistics of the system, for which, under mild assumptions, we prove a law of large numbers and a central limit theorem. The limits are expressed in terms of multiple stochastic integral…
Consider a branching system with particles moving according to an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process with drift $μ>0$ and branching according to a law in the domain of attraction of the $(1+β)$-stable distribution. The mean of the branching law is strictly larger than $1$ implying that the system is supercritical and the total number of particles grows exponentially at some rate $λ>0$. It is known that the system obeys a law of large numbers. In the paper we study its rate of convergence. We discover an interesting interplay between the branching rate $λ$ and the drift parameter $μ$. There are three r…
In this manuscript, we continue with the systematic study of the speed of extinction of continuous state branching processes in Lévy environments under more general branching mechanisms. Here, we deal with the weakly subcritical regime under the assumption that the branching mechanism is regularly varying. We extend recent results of Li and Xu [14] and Palau et al. [17], where it is assumed that the branching mechanism is stable and complement the recent articles of Bansaye et al. [2] and by the authors in [7], where the critical and the strongly and intermediate subcritical cases were treated…
In the paper the rescaled occupation time fluctuation process of a certain empirical system is investigated. The system consists of particles evolving independently according to α-stable motion in R^d, α<d<2α. The particles split according to the binary critical branching law with intensity V>0. We study how the limit behaviour of the fluctuations of the occupation time depends on the \emph{initial particle configuration}. We obtain a functional central limit theorem for a vast class of infinitely divisible distributions. Our findings extend and put in a unified setting results which previousl…
We study the exponential growth of bifurcating processes with ancestral dependence. We suppose here that the lifetimes of the cells are dependent random variables, that the numbers of new cells are random and dependent. Lifetimes and new cells's numbers are also assumed to be dependent. We illustrate our results by examples, including some Markov models. Our approach is related to the behaviour of the Laplace transform of nonnegative additive functional of Markov chains and require weak moment assumption (no exponential moment is needed).
In this paper we consider two related stochastic models. The first one is a branching system consisting of particles moving according to a Markov family in R^d and undergoing subcritical branching with a constant rate of V>0. New particles immigrate to the system according to a homogeneous space time Poisson random field. The second model is the superprocess corresponding to the branching particle system. We study rescaled occupation time process and the process of its fluctuations with very mild assumptions on the Markov family. In the general setting a functional central limit theorem as wel…
In this paper, we study the speed of extinction of continuous state branching processes in subcritical Lévy environments. More precisely, when the associated Lévy process to the environment drifts to $-\infty$ and, under a suitable exponential martingale change of measure (Esscher transform), the environment either drifts to $-\infty$ or oscillates. We extend recent results of Palau et al. (2016) and Li and Xu (2018), where the branching term is associated to a spectrally positive stable Lévy process and complement the recent article of Bansaye et al. (2021) where the critical case was studied…

We consider a continuous-time symmetric branching random walk on multidimensional lattices with immigration and infinite number of initial particles. We assume that at every lattice point a process of birth and death of particles is described by a Bienayme-Galton- Watson branching process. The assumption on immigration of particles is that a new particle can appear at every lattice point from the outside. The subject of the study is a limit distribution of the particle field on the lattice. The differential equations for correlation functions for the number of particles at an arbitrary time mo…
The reproduction speed of a continuous-time branching random walk is proportional to a positive parameter $λ$. There is a threshold for $λ$, which is called $λ_w$, that separates almost sure global extinction from global survival. Analogously, there exists another threshold $λ_s$ below which any site is visited almost surely a finite number of times (i.e.~local extinction) while above it there is a positive probability of visiting every site infinitely many times. The local critical parameter $λ_s$ is completely understood and can be computed as a function of the reproduction rates. On the oth…
