Active polymers play a central role in many biological systems, from bacterial flagella to cellular cytoskeletons. Minimal models of semiflexible active filaments have been used to study a variety of interesting phenomena in active systems, such as defect dynamics in active nematics, clustering and laning in motility assays, and conformational properties of chromatin in eukaryotic cells. In this paper, we map a semiflexible polymer to an exactly solvable active Rouse chain, which enables us to analytically compute configurational and dynamical properties of active polymers with arbitrary rigidity.

We study the patterning and fluctuations of a collection of active contractile polar filaments on a two dimensional substrate, using a continuum description in the presence of athermal noise, parameterised by an active temperature $T_A$. The steady states generically consist of arrays of inward pointing asters and show a continuous transition from a moving aster street to a stationary aster lattice. In contrast to its equilibrium counterpart, this active crystal shows true long range order at low $T_A$. On increasing $T_A$, the asters remodel with a distribution of lifetimes; concomitantly we …
Active materials with distinctive nonequilibrium properties have diverse materials science applications. Active systems are common in living matter, such as the filament network in the cell that is activated by molecular motors, and in materials science as exemplified by hydrogels activated by chemical reactions. Here we describe another class of active polymeric filament systems where the filaments are activated by embedded chemically-powered nanomotors that have catalytic and noncatalytic parts. Chemical reactions on the catalytic surfaces produce forces that act on the polymeric filaments. …

In active matter systems, deformable boundaries provide a mechanism to organize internal active stresses and perform work on the external environment. To study a minimal model of such a system, we perform particle-based simulations of an elastic vesicle containing a collection of polar active filaments. The interplay between the active stress organization due to interparticle interactions and that due to the deformability of the confinement leads to a variety of filament spatiotemporal organizations that have not been observed in bulk systems or under rigid confinement, including highly-aligne…
Enhanced colloidal transport beyond the limit imposed by diffusion is usually achieved through external fields. Here, we demonstrate the ballistic transport of a colloidal sphere using internal sources of energy provided by an attached active filament. The latter is modeled as a chain of chemo-mechanically active beads connected by potentials that enforce semi-flexibility and self-avoidance. The fluid flow produced by the active beads and the forces they mediate are explicitly taken into account in the overdamped equations of motion describing the colloid-filament assembly. The speed and effic…

We use Langevin dynamics simulations to study dynamical behaviour of a dense planar layer of active semi-flexible filaments. Using the strength of active force and the thermal persistence length as parameters, we map a detailed phase diagram and identify several non-equilibrium phases in this system. In addition to a slowly flowing melt phase, we observe that for sufficiently high activity, collective flow accompanied by signatures of local polar and nematic order appears in the system. This state is also characterised by strong density fluctuations. Furthermore, we identify an activity-driven…
Myosin motor proteins drive vigorous steady-state fluctuations in the actin cytoskeleton of cells. Endogenous embedded semiflexible filaments such as microtubules, or added filaments such as single-walled carbon nanotubes are used as novel tools to non-invasively track equilibrium and non-equilibrium fluctuations in such biopolymer networks. Here we analytically calculate shape fluctuations of semiflexible probe filaments in a viscoelastic environment, driven out of equilibrium by motor activity. Transverse bending fluctuations of the probe filaments can be decomposed into dynamic normal modes…
In active matter systems, self-propelled particles can self-organize to undergo collective motion, leading to persistent dynamical behavior out of equilibrium. In cells, cytoskeletal filaments and motor proteins self-organize into complex structures important for cell mechanics, motility, and division. Collective dynamics of cytoskeletal systems can be reconstituted using filament gliding experiments, in which cytoskeletal filaments are propelled by surface-bound motor proteins. These experiments have observed diverse dynamical states, including flocks, polar streams, and single-filament spira…
Active colloids and externally actuated semi-flexible filaments provide basic building blocks for designing autonomously motile micro-machines. Here, we show that a passive semi-flexible filament can be actuated and transported by attaching an active colloid to its terminus. We study the dynamics of this assembly when it is free, tethered, or clamped using overdamped equations of motion that explicitly account for active fluid flow and the forces it mediates. Linear states are destabilized by buckling instabilities to produce stable states of non-zero curvature and writhe. We demarcate boundar…
We present a detailed study of a clamped ribbon-like filament under a compressive active force using Brownian dynamics simulations. We show that a clamped ribbon-like filament is able to capture beating as well as a rotational motion under the compressive force. The nature of oscillation is governed by the torsional rigidity of the filament. The frequency of oscillation is almost independent of the torsional rigidity. The beating of the filament gives butterfly shape trajectory of the free-end monomer, whereas rotational motion yields a circular trajectory on a plane. The binormal correlation …
Slender bodies capable of spontaneous motion in the absence of external actuation in an otherwise quiescent fluid are common in biological, physical and technological contexts. The interplay between the spontaneous fluid flow, Brownian motion, and the elasticity of the body presents a challenging fluid-structure interaction problem. Here, we model this problem by approximating the slender body as an elastic filament that can impose non-equilibrium velocities or stresses at the fluid-structure interface. We derive equations of motion for such an active filament by enforcing momentum conservatio…
Many-body interactions in systems of active matter can cause particles to move collectively and self-organize into dynamic structures with long-range order. In cells, the self-assembly of cytoskeletal filaments is critical for cellular motility, structure, intracellular transport, and division. Semiflexible cytoskeletal filaments driven by polymerization or motor-protein interactions on a two-dimensional substrate, such as the cell cortex, can induce filament bending and curvature leading to interesting collective behavior. For example, the bacterial cell-division filament FtsZ is known to hav…
Active nematics are microscopically driven liquid crystals that exhibit dynamical steady states characterized by the creation and annihilation of topological defects. Motivated by experimental realizations of such systems made of biopolymer filaments and motor proteins, we describe a large-scale simulation study of a particle-based computational model that explicitly incorporates the semiflexibility of the biopolymers. We find that energy injected into the system at the particle scale preferentially excites bend deformations, renormalizing the filament bend modulus to smaller values. The emerg…
Active bodies in viscous fluids interact hydrodynamically through self-generated flows. Here we study spontaneous aggregation induced by hydrodynamic flow in a suspension of stiff, apolar, active filaments. Lateral hydrodynamic attractions in extensile filaments lead, independent of volume fraction, to anisotropic aggregates which translate and rotate ballistically. Lateral hydrodynamic repulsion in contractile filaments lead, with increasing volume fractions, to microstructured states of asters, clusters, and incipient gels where, in each case, filament motion is diffusive. Our results demons…

The motion of active polymers in a porous medium is shown to depend critically on flexibilty, activity and degree of polymerization. For given Peclet number, we observe a transition from localisation to diffusion as the stiffness of the chains is increased. Whereas stiff chains move almost unhindered through the porous medium, flexible ones spiral and get stuck. Their motion can be accounted for by the model of a continuous time random walk with a renewal process corresponding to unspiraling. The waiting time distribution is shown to develop heavy tails for decreasing stiffness, resulting in s…
The steady-state behavior of a dilute suspension of self-propelled filaments confined between planar walls subjected to the Couette-flow is reported herein. The effect of hydrodynamics has been taken into account using a mesoscale simulation approach. We present a detailed analysis of positional and angular probability distributions of filaments with varying propulsive force and shear-flow. Distribution of centre-of-mass of the filament shows adsorption near the surfaces, which diminishes with the flow. The excess density of filaments decreases with Weissenberg number as $Wi^{-β}$ with an expo…
Active matter systems provide fascinating examples of pattern formation and collective motility without counterparts in equilibrium systems. Here, we employ Brownian dynamics simulations to study the collective motion and self-organization in systems of self-propelled semiflexible filaments, inspired by the gliding motility of \textit{filamentous Cyanobacteria}. Specifically, we investigate the influence of stochastic direction reversals on the patterns. We explore pattern formation and dynamics by modulating three relevant physical parameters, the bending stiffness, the activity, and the reve…
Active matter agents consume internal energy or extract energy from the environment for locomotion and force generation. Already rather generic models, such as ensembles of active Brownian particles, exhibit phenomena, which are absent at equilibrium, in particular motility-induced phase separation and collective motion. Further intriguing nonequilibrium effects emerge in assemblies of bound active agents as in linear polymers or filaments. The interplay of activity and conformational degrees of freedom gives rise to novel structural and dynamical features of individual polymers as well as in …
We investigate the motion of active semiflexible filament with shape kinematics and hydrodynamic interaction including. Three types of filament motion are found: Translation, snaking and rotation. Change of flexibility will induce instability of shape kinematics and further result in asymmetry of shape kinematics respect to the motion of mass center, which are responsible to a continuous-like transition from translation to snaking and a first-order-like transition from snaking to rotation, respectively. Of particular interest, we find that long-range hydrodynamic interaction is not necessary f…

We simulate the nonlocal Stokesian hydrodynamics of an elastic filament which is active due a permanent distribution of stresslets along its contour. A bending instability of an initially straight filament spontaneously breaks flow symmetry and leads to autonomous filament motion which, depending on conformational symmetry, can be translational or rotational. At high ratios of activity to elasticity, the linear instability develops into nonlinear fluctuating states with large amplitude deformations. The dynamics of these states can be qualitatively understood as a superposition of translationa…
We study the dynamics and patterning of polar contractile filaments on the surface of a cylindrical cell using active hydrodynamic equations that incorporate couplings between curvature and filament orientation. Cables and rings spontaneously emerge as steady state configurations on the cylinder, and can be stationary or moving, helical or segments moving along helical trajectories. Contractility induces coalescence of proximal rings. We observe phase transitions in the steady state patterns upon changing cell diameter and make several testable predictions. Our results are relevant to the dyna…
Networks of biofilaments are essential for the formation of cellular structures that support various biological functions. For the most part, previous studies have investigated the collective dynamics of rod-like biofilaments; however, the shapes of the actual subcellular components are often more elaborate. In this study, we considered an active object composed of two active filaments, which represents the progression from rod-like biofilaments to complex-shaped biofilaments. Specifically, we numerically assessed the collective behaviors of these active objects in two dimensions and observed …
The conformational and dynamical properties of active self-propelled filaments/polymers are investigated in the presence of hydrodynamic interactions by both, Brownian dynamics simulations and analytical theory. Numerically, a discrete linear chain composed of active Brownian particles is considered, analytically, a continuous linear semiflexible polymer with active velocities changing diffusively. The force-free nature of active monomers is accounted for - no Stokeslet fluid flow induced by active forces - and higher order hydrodynamic multipole moments are neglected. The nonequilibrium chara…
