We study finiteness conditions in Grothendieck categories by introducing the concepts of objects of type $\text{FP}_n$ and studying their closure properties with respect to short exact sequences. This allows us to propose a notion of locally type $\text{FP}_n$ categories as a generalization of locally finitely generated and locally finitely presented categories. We also define and study the injective objects that are Ext-orthogonal to the class of objects of type $\text{FP}_n$, called $\text{FP}_n$-injective objects, which will be the right half of a complete cotorsion pair.
As a generalization of the category of modules over an $n$-coherent ring, we present the concept of $n$-coherent categories, which also recovers the notions of locally noetherian and locally coherent categories for $n = 0, 1$. Such categories will provide a setting in which the $\text{FP}_n$-injective cotorsion pair is hereditary, and where it is possible to construct (pre)covers by $\text{FP}_n$-injective objects. Moreover, we see how $n$-coherent categories provide a suitable framework for a nice theory of Gorenstein homological algebra with respect to the class of $\text{FP}_n$-injective modules. We define Gorenstein $\text{FP}_n$-injective objects and construct two different model category structures (one abelian and the other one exact) in which these Gorenstein objects are the fibrant objects.
We develop a homotopy theory of categories enriched in a monoidal model category V. In particular, we deal with homotopy weighted limits and colimits, and homotopy local presentability. The main result, which was known for simplicially-enriched categories, links homotopy locally presentable V-categories with combinatorial model V-categories, in the case where has all objects of V are cofibrant.
We define and study the notion of a locally bounded enriched category over a (locally bounded) symmetric monoidal closed category, generalizing the locally bounded ordinary categories of Freyd and Kelly. In addition to proving several general results for constructing examples of locally bounded enriched categories and locally bounded closed categories, we demonstrate that locally bounded enriched categories admit fully enriched analogues of many of the convenient results enjoyed by locally bounded ordinary categories. In particular, we prove full enrichments of Freyd and Kelly's reflectivity a…
We generalize the concepts of locally presentable and accessible categories. Our framework includes such categories as small presheaves over large categories and ind-categories. This generalization is intended for applications in the abstract homotopy theory.
It is proved that the projective model structure of the category of topologically enriched diagrams of topological spaces over a topologically enriched locally contractible small category is Quillen equivalent to the standard Quillen model structure of topological spaces. We give a geometric interpretation of this fact in directed homotopy.
We extend a result of Cisinski on the construction of cofibrantly generated model structures from (Grothendieck) toposes to locally presentable categories and from monomorphism to more general cofibrations. As in the original case, under additional conditions, the resulting model structures are "left determined" in the sense of Rosicky and Tholen.
We identify two categories of locally compact objects on an exact category A. They correspond to the well-known constructions of the Beilinson category lim A and the Kato category k(A). We study their mutual relations and compare the two constructions. We prove that lim A is an exact category, which gives to this category a very convenient feature when dealing with K-theoretical invariants. It is natural therefore to consider the Beilinson category lim A as the most convenient candidate to the role of the category of locally compact objects over an exact category. We also show that the categor…
The main objective of this paper is to construct a symmetric monoidal closed model category of coherently commutative monoidal quasi-categories. We construct another model category structure whose fibrant objects are (essentially) those coCartesian fibrations which represent objects that are known as symmetric monoidal quasi-categories in the literature. We go on to establish a Quillen equivalence between the two model categories.
We extend the 2-representation theory of finitary 2-categories to certain 2-categories with infinitely many objects, denoted locally finitary 2-categories, and extend the classical classification results of simple transitive 2-representations of weakly fiat 2-categories to this environment. We also consider locally finitary 2-categories and 2-representations with a grading, and prove the associated coalgebra 1-morphisms have a homogeneous structure. We use these results to classify simple transitive 2-representations of certain classes of cyclotomic 2-Kac-Moody algebras.
We prove general results about completeness of cotorsion theories and existence of covers and envelopes in locally presentable abelian categories, extending the well-established theory for module categories and Grothendieck categories. These results are then applied to the categories of contramodules over topological rings, which provide examples and counterexamples.
We study locally constant coefficients. We first study the theory of homotopy Kan extensions with locally constant coefficients in model categories, and explain how it characterizes the homotopy theory of small categories. We explain how to interpret this in terms of left Bousfield localization of categories of diagrams with values in a combinatorial model category. At last, we explain how the theory of homotopy Kan extensions in derivators can be used to understand locally constant functors.
We prove that every locally Cartesian closed $\infty$-category with subobject classifier has a strict initial object and disjoint and universal binary coproducts.
The basic properties of locally finite triangulated categories are discussed. The focus is on Auslander--Reiten theory and the lattice of thick subcategories.
This note explains how dependent sums and products are interpreted by adjoints of the base change functor in a locally cartesian closed category. An effort is made to unpack all the definitions so as to make the concepts more transparent to new learners.
Centers of categories capture the natural operations on their objects. Homotopy coherent centers are introduced here as an extension of this notion to categories with an associated homotopy theory. These centers can also be interpreted as Hochschild cohomology type invariants in contexts that are not necessarily linear or stable, and we argue that they are more appropriate to higher categorical contexts than the centers of their homotopy or derived categories. Among many other things, we present an obstruction theory for realizing elements in the centers of homotopy categories, and a Bousfield…
We introduce a new class of categories generalizing locally presentable ones. The distinction does not manifest in the abelian case and, assuming Vopenka's principle, the same happens in the regular case. The category of complete partial orders is the natural example of a nearly locally finitely presentable category which is not locally presentable.
We exhibit an equivalence between the model-theoretic framework of universal classes and the category-theoretic framework of locally multipresentable categories. We similarly give an equivalence between abstract elementary classes (AECs) admitting intersections and locally polypresentable categories. We use these results to shed light on Shelah's presentation theorem for AECs.
Are all subcategories of locally finitely presentable categories that are closed under limits and $λ$-filtered colimits also locally presentable? For full subcategories the answer is affirmative. Makkai and Pitts proved that in the case $λ=\aleph_0$ the answer is affirmative also for all iso-full subcategories, \emph{i.\thinspace e.}, those containing with every pair of objects all isomorphisms between them. We discuss a possible generalization of this from $\aleph_0$ to an arbitrary $λ$.
After developing the basic theory of locally cartesian localizations of presentable locally cartesian closed infinity-categories, we establish the representability of equivalences and show that univalent families, in the sense of Voevodsky, form a poset isomorphic to the poset of bounded local classes, in the sense of Lurie. It follows that every infinity-topos has a hierarchy of "universal" univalent families, indexed by regular cardinals, and that n-topoi have univalent families classifying (n-2)-truncated maps. We show that univalent families are preserved (and detected) by right adjoints t…
There is a well-known correspondence between coherent theories (and their interpretations) and coherent categories (resp. functors), hence the (2,1)-category $\mathbf{Coh_{\sim}}$ (of small coherent categories, coherent functors and all natural isomorphisms) is of logical interest. We prove that this category admits all small 2-limits and 2-colimits (in the ($\infty $,1)-categorical sense), and prove a 2-categorical small object argument to provide weak factorisation systems for coherent functors.
We define locally wide finitary 2-categories by relaxing the definition of finitary 2-categories to allow infinitely many objects and isomorphism classes of 1-morphisms and infinite dimensional hom-spaces of 2-morphisms. After defining related concepts including transitive 2-representations in this setting, we provide a new method of constructing coalgebra 1-morphisms associated to transitive 2-representations of locally wide weakly fiat 2-categories, and demonstrate that any such transitive 2-representation is equivalent to a certain subcategory of the category of comodule 1-morphisms over th…
Seely's paper "Locally cartesian closed categories and type theory" contains a well-known result in categorical type theory: that the category of locally cartesian closed categories is equivalent to the category of Martin-Löf type theories with Pi-types, Sigma-types and extensional identity types. However, Seely's proof relies on the problematic assumption that substitution in types can be interpreted by pullbacks. Here we prove a corrected version of Seely's theorem: that the Bénabou-Hofmann interpretation of Martin-Löf type theory in locally cartesian closed categories yields a biequivalence…
We show that the homotopy category of complexes K(B) over any finitely accessible additive category B is locally well generated. That is, any localizing subcategory L in K(B) which is generated by a set is well generated in the sense of Neeman. We also show that K(B) itself being well generated is equivalent to B being pure semisimple, a concept which naturally generalizes right pure semisimplicity of a ring R for B = Mod-R.
We give an explicit description of the generator of finitely presented objects of the coslice of a locally finitely presentable category under a given object, as consisting of all pushouts of finitely presented maps under this object. Then we prove that the comma category under the direct image part of a morphism of locally finitely presentable category is still locally finitely presentable, and we give again an explicit description of its generator of finitely presented objects. We finally deduce that 2-category $\LFP$ has comma objects computed in $\Cat$.
We call a finitely complete category algebraically coherent when the change-of-base functors of its fibration of points are coherent, which means that they preserve finite limits and jointly strongly epimorphic pairs of arrows. We give examples of categories satisfying this condition; for instance, coherent categories, categories of interest in the sense of Orzech, and (compact) Hausdorff algebras over a semi-abelian algebraically coherent theory. We study equivalent conditions in the context of semi-abelian categories, as well as some of its consequences: including amongst others, strong prot…
We introduce Artin-Wraith glueing and locally closed inclusions in double categories. Examples include locales, toposes, topological spaces, categories, and posets. With appropriate assumptions, we show that locally closed inclusions are exponentiable, and the exponentials are constructed via Artin-Wraith glueing. Thus, we obtain a single theorem establishing the exponentiability of locally closed inclusions in these five cases.
We study the bialgebra structures on quiver coalgebras and the monoidal structures on the categories of locally nilpotent and locally finite quiver representations. It is shown that the path coalgebra of an arbitrary quiver admits natural bialgebra structures. This endows the category of locally nilpotent and locally finite representations of an arbitrary quiver with natural monoidal structures from bialgebras. We also obtain theorems of Gabriel type for pointed bialgebras and hereditary finite pointed monoidal categories.
Locally cartesian closed (lcc) categories are natural categorical models of extensional dependent type theory. This paper introduces the "gros" semantics in the category of lcc categories: Instead of constructing an interpretation in a given individual lcc category, we show that also the category of all lcc categories can be endowed with the structure of a model of dependent type theory. The original interpretation in an individual lcc category can then be recovered by slicing. As in the original interpretation, we face the issue of coherence: Categorical structure is usually preserved by func…
Our aim is to give a fairly complete account on the construction of compatible model structures on exact categories and symmetric monoidal exact categories, in some cases generalizing previously known results. We describe the close connection of this theory to approximation theory and cotorsion pairs. We also discuss the motivating applications with the emphasis on constructing monoidal model structures for the derived category of quasi-coherent sheaves of modules over a scheme.
We show how derived categories build bridges across the current mathematical mainstream, linking geometric and algebraic, commutative and noncommutative, local and global banks. Arches in these bridges are pieces of semiorthogonal decompositions of triangulated categories. To appear in the Proceedings of the ICM 2002 in Beijing.
We define quasi--locally presentable categories as big unions of coreflective subcategories which are locally presentable. Under appropriate hypotheses we prove a representability theorem for exact contravariant functors defined on a quasi--locally presentable category taking values in abelian groups. We show that the abelianization of a well generated triangulated category is quasi--locally presentable and we obtain a new proof of Brown representability theorem. Examples of functors which are not representable are also given.
** Draft Version ** To any boolean topos one can associate its category of internal Hilbert spaces, and if the topos is locally separated one can consider a full subcategory of square integrable Hilbert spaces. In both case it is a symmetric monoidal monotone complete $C^{*}$-category. We will prove that any boolean locally separated topos can be reconstructed as the classifying topos of "non-degenerate" monoidal normal $*$-representations of both its category of internal Hilbert spaces and its category of square integrable Hilbert spaces. This suggest a possible extension of the usual Gelfand…
If $X$ is a quasi-compact and quasi-separated scheme, the category $Qcoh(X)$ of quasi-coherent sheaves on $X$ is locally finitely presented. Therefore categorical flat quasi-coherent sheaves naturally arise. But there is also the standard definition of flatness in $Qcoh(X)$ from the stalks. So it makes sense to wonder the relationship (if any) between these two notions. In this paper we show that there are plenty of locally finitely presented categories having no other categorical flats than the zero object. As particular instance, we show that $Qcoh(\mathbf{P}^n(R)))$ has no other categorical…
In this dissertation, we compare the "classical" homology of an $ω$-category (defined as the homology of its Street nerve) with its polygraphic homology. More precisely, we prove that both homologies generally do not coincide and call homologically coherent the particular strict $ω$-categories for which polygraphic homology and homology of the nerve do coincide. The goal pursued is to find abstract and concrete criteria to detect homologically coherent $ω$-categories. For example, we prove that all (small) categories, considered as strict $ω$-categories with unit cells above dimension 1, are h…
We define a tensor product of linear sites, and a resulting tensor product of Grothendieck categories based upon their representations as categories of linear sheaves. We show that our tensor product is a special case of the tensor product of locally presentable linear categories, and that the tensor product of locally coherent Grothendieck categories is locally coherent if and only if the Deligne tensor product of their abelian categories of finitely presented objects exists. We describe the tensor product of non-commutative projective schemes in terms of Z-algebras, and show that for project…
We study the question when a category of ind-objects is abelian. Our answer allows a further generalization of the notion of weakly Tannakian categories introduced by the author. As an application we show that, under suitable conditions, the category of coherent sheaves on the product of two schemes with the resolution property is given by the Deligne tensor product of the categories of coherent sheaves of the two factors. To do this we prove that the class of quasi-compact and semi-separated schemes with the resolution property is closed under fiber products.
The Ehresmann-Schein-Nambooripad (ESN) Theorem asserts an equivalence between the category of inverse semigroups and the category of inductive groupoids. In this paper, we consider the category of inverse categories and functors -- a natural generalization of inverse semigroups -- and extend the ESN theorem to an equivalence between this category and the category of top-heavy locally inductive groupoids and locally inductive functors. From the proof of this extension, we also generalize the ESN Theorem to an equivalence between the category of inverse semicategories and the category of locally…
We study locally presentable categories equipped with a cofibrantly generated weak factorization system. Our main result is that these categories are closed under 2-limits, in particular under pseudopullbacks. We give applications to deconstructible classes in Grothendieck categories. We discuss pseudopullbacks of combinatorial model categories.
The purpose of this paper is to develop an efficient computational model for Abelian categories of coherent sheaves over certain classes of varieties. These categories are naturally described as Serre quotient categories. Hence, our approach relies on describing general Serre quotient categories in a constructive way which leads to an efficient computer implementation.
We extend the framework of combinatorial model categories, so that the category of small presheaves over large indexing categories and ind-categories would be embraced by the new machinery called class-combinatorial model categories. The definition of the new class of model categories is based on the corresponding extension of the theory of locally presentable and accessible categories developed in the companion paper [arXiv:1110.0605], where we introduced the concepts of locally class-presentable and class-accessible categories. In this work we prove that the category of weak equivalences of …
In this paper we establish an equivalence between the category of graded D-branes of type B in Landau-Ginzburg models with homogeneous superpotential W and the triangulated category of singularities of the fiber of W over zero. The main result is a theorem that shows that the graded triangulated category of singularities of the cone over a projective variety is connected via a fully faithful functor to the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on the base of the cone. This implies that the category of graded D-branes of type B in Landau-Ginzburg models with homogeneous superpotential W …
We introduce new enhancements for the bounded derived category $D^b(Coh(X))$ of coherent sheaves on a suitable scheme $X$ and for its subcategory $Perf(X)$ of perfect complexes. They are used for translating Fourier-Mukai functors to functors between derived categories of dg algebras, for relating homological smoothness of $Perf(X)$ to geometric smoothness of $X,$ and for proving homological smoothness of $D^b(Coh(X)).$ Moreover, we characterize properness of $Perf(X)$ and $D^b(Coh(X))$ geometrically.
The paper contains general results on the uniqueness of a DG enhancement for triangulated categories. As a consequence we obtain such uniqueness for the unbounded categories of quasi-coherent sheaves, for the triangulated categories of perfect complexes, and for the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves on quasi-projective schemes. If a scheme is projective then we also prove a strong uniqueness for the triangulated category of perfect complexes and for the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves. These results directly imply that fully faithful functors from the bounded derive…
Under certain conditions, a scheme can be reconstructed from its category of quasi-coherent sheaves. The Tannakian reconstruction theorem provides another example where a geometric object can be reconstructed from an associated category, in this case the category of its finite dimensional representations. Lurie's result that the pseudofunctor which sends a geometric stack to its category of quasi-coherent sheaves is fully faithful provides a conceptual explanation for why this works. In this paper we prove a generalized Tannakian recognition theorem, in order to characterize a part of the imag…
For a locally presentable abelian category $\mathsf B$ with a projective generator, we construct the projective derived and contraderived model structures on the category of complexes, proving in particular the existence of enough homotopy projective complexes of projective objects. We also show that the derived category $\mathsf D(\mathsf B)$ is generated, as a triangulated category with coproducts, by the projective generator of $\mathsf B$. For a Grothendieck abelian category $\mathsf A$, we construct the injective derived and coderived model structures on complexes. Assuming Vopenka's prin…
We consider three (2-)categories and their (anti-)equivalence. They are the category of small abelian categories and exact functors, the category of definable additive categories and interpretation functors, the category of locally coherent abelian categories and coherent morphisms. These categories link algebra, model theory and "geometry".
Let $\mathcal C$ be the category of finite graphs. Lovàsz shows that the semi-ring of isomorphism classes of $\mathcal C$ (with coproduct as sum, and product as multiplication) is embedded into the direct product of the semi-ring of natural numbers. Our aim is to generalize this result to other categories. For this, one crucial property is that every object decomposes to a finite coproduct of connected objects. We show that a locally-finite extensive category satisfies this condition. Conversely, a category where any object is decomposed into a finite coproduct of connected objects is shown to…
