It is still a long-standing open problem in Finsler geometry, is there any regular Landsberg metric which is not Berwaldian. However, there are non-regular Landsberg metrics which are not Berwladian. The known examples are established by G. S. Asanov and Z. Shen. In this paper, we use the Maple program to study some explicit examples of non-Berwaldian Landsberg metrics. In fact, such kinds of examples are very tedious and complicated to investigate. Nonetheless, we use the maple program and Finsler packages to simplify the calculations in an elegant way. Depending on these examples, we manage to figure out some geometric properties of the geodesic spray of a non-Berwaldain Landsberg metric. Deforming this spray in a very specific way, using the metrizability tools of the deformed spray, we get new (very simple) non-Berwaldian Landsberg metrics. Moreover, the powerful of this procedure is investigating a very simple and useful formula for the general class obtained by Z. Shen.
For a smooth strongly convex Minkowski norm $F:\mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}_{\geq0}$, we study isometries of the Hessian metric corresponding to the function $E=\tfrac12F^2$. Under the additional assumption that $F$ is invariant with respect to the standard action of $SO(k)\times SO(n-k)$, we prove a conjecture of Laugwitz stated in 1965. Further, we describe all isometries between such Hessian metrics, and prove Landsberg Unicorn Conjecture for Finsler manifolds of dimension $n\ge 3$ such that at every point the corresponding Minkowski norm has a linear $SO(k)\times SO(n-k)$-symmetry
Finsleroid-Finsler metrics form an important class of singular (y-local) Finslerian metrics. They were introduced by G. S. Asanov in 2006. As a special case Asanov produced examples of Landsberg spaces of dimension at least three that are not of Berwald type. These are called Unicorns [5]. The existence of regular (y - global) Landsberg metrics that are not of Berwald type is an open problem up to this day. In this paper we prove that Asanov's Unicorns belong to the class of generalized Berwald manifolds. More precisely we prove the following theorems: a Finsleroid-Finsler space is a generaliz…
This paper addresses the problem of existence of generalized Landsberg structures on surfaces using the Cartan-Kähler Theorem and a Path Geometry approach.
By performing required evaluations, we show that in the Finsleroid-regular space the Landsberg-space condition just degenerates to the Berwald-space condition (at any dimension number $N\ge2$). Simple and clear expository representations are obtained. Due comparisons with the Finsleroid-Finsler space are indicated. Keywords: Finsler metrics, spray coefficients, curvature tensors.
In this paper, we introduce a new look at Finsler surfaces. Landsberg surfaces are Finsler surfaces that are solutions of a system of non-linear partial differential equations. Considering the unicorn's Landsberg problem, we reduce this system to a single non-linear PDE which we call the Landsberg's PDE. By making use of the new look of Finsler surfaces, we solve the Landsberg's PDE and get a class of solutions. Moreover, we show that these solutions and their conformal transformations are Berwaldain.
Given a Finsler space, we introduce a system of partial differential equations, called the Landsberg equation. Based on a careful analysis of the Landsberg equation and the observation that the solution space is invariant under the linear isometries of the tangent Minkowski spaces, we prove that an $(α_1, α_2)$-metric of the Landsberg type must be a Berwald metric. This shows that the hunting for a unicorn, one of the longest standing open problem in Finsler geometry, cannot be successful even in the very broad class of $(α_1,α_2)$-metrics.
In this paper, as an application of the inverse problem of calculus of variations, we investigate two compatibility conditions on the spherically symmetric Finsler metrics. By making use of these conditions, we focus our attention on the Landsberg spherically symmetric Finsler metrics. We classify all spherically symmetric manifolds of Landsberg or Berwald types. For the higher dimensions $n\geq 3$, we prove that: all Landsberg spherically symmetric manifolds are either Riemannian or their geodesic sprays have a specific formula; all regular Landsberg spherically symmetric metrics are Riemanni…
In this paper, we study left invariant conic Finsler metrics on the 2-dimensional non-Abelian Lie group $G$ with nowhere vanishing spray vector fields, and classify those satisfying the constant curvature condition, the Landsberg condition or the Berwald condition respectively. We prove that any left invariant conic Landsberg metric on $G$ must be Berwald. This discovery enable us to propose a homogeneous conic Landsberg Conjecture, which guesses that every homogeneous conic Landsberg metric is Berwald, and prove the 2-dimensional case for it.
In this paper, we consider doubly warped product (DWP) Finsler manifolds with some non-Riemannian curvature properties. First, we study Berwald and isotropic mean Berwald DWP-Finsler manifolds. Then we prove that every proper Douglas DWP-Finsler manifold is Riemannian. We show that a proper DWP-manifold is Landsbergian if and only it is Berwaldian. In continue, we prove that every relatively isotropic Landsberg DWP-manifold is a Landsberg manifold. We show that a relatively isotropic mean Landsberg warped product manifold is a weakly Landsberg manifold. Finally, we show that there is no any lo…
In this paper, we prove that all spherically symmetric Landsberg surfaces are Berwaldian. We modify the classification of spherically symmetric Finsler metrics, done by the author in [S. G. Elgendi, On the classification of Landsberg spherically symmetric Finsler metrics, Int. J. Geom. Methods Mod. Phys. 18 (2021)], of Berwald type of dimension $n\geq 3$. Precisely, we show that all Berwald spherically symmetric metrics of dimension $n\geq 3$ are Riemannian or given by a certain formula. As a simple class of Berwaldian metrics, we prove that all spherically symmetric metrics in which the funct…
We formulate the notion of the Finsleroid--Finsler space, including the positive--definite as well as indefinite cases. The associated concepts of angle, scalar product, and the distance function are elucidated. If the Finsleroid--Finsler space is of Landsberg type, then the Finsleroid charge is a constant. The Finsleroid--Finsler space proves to be a Berwald space if and only if the Finsleroid--axis 1-form is parallel with respect to the associated Riemannian metric and, simultaneously, the Finsleroid charge is a constant. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the Finsleroid--Finsler sp…
Given a Finsler space (M,F), one can define natural average Riemannian metrics on M by averaging on the indicatrix I_x the fundamental tensor g of the Finsler function $F$. In this paper we determine explicitly the Levi-Civita connection for these average Riemannian metrics. We apply the result to the case when (M,F) is a Landsberg space. Using a particular averaging procedure, the invariance of the average metric along a homotopy in the space of Finsler structures over M is shown. As a consequence of such invariance, we prove that any C^5 regular Landsberg space is a Berwald space.
The problem of conformal transformation and conformal flatness of Finsler spaces has been studied by so many researchers $\left[ 6,16,17,20,21\right] .$ Recently, Prasad et. al $\left[ 19\right] $ have studied three dimensional conformally flat Landsberg and Berwald spaces and have given some important results. The purpose of the present paper is to extend the idea of conformal change to four dimensional Finsler spaces and find the suitable conditions under which a four dimensional conformally flat Landsberg space becomes a Berwald space.
In this paper, we study a class of Finsler metrics which contains the class of Berwald metrics as a special case. We prove that every Finsler metric in this class is a generalized Douglas-Weyl metric. Then we study isotropic flag curvature Finsler metrics in this class. Finally we show that on this class of Finsler metrics, the notion of Landsberg and weakly Landsberg curvature are equivalent.
In this paper, we study general $(α,β)$-metrics which $α$ is a Riemannian metric and $β$ is an one-form. We have proven that every weak Landsberg general $(α,β)$-metric is a Berwald metric, where $β$ is a closed and conformal one-form. This show that there exist no generalized unicorn metric in this class of general $(α,β)$-metric. Further, We show that $F$ is a Landsberg general $(α,β)$-metric if and only if it is weak Landsberg general $(α,β)$-metric, where $β$ is a closed and conformal one-form.
Let (M_1,F_1) and (M_2,F_2) be a pair of Finsler manifolds. The Minkowskian product Finsler manifold (M,F) of (M_1,F_1) and (M_2,F_2) with respect to a product function f is the product manifold M=M_1\times M_2 endowed with the Finsler metric F^2=f(K,H), where K=(F_1)^2,H=(F_2)^2. In this paper, the Cartan connection and Berwald connection of (M,F) are derived in terms of the corresponding objects of (M_1,F_1) and (M_2,F_2). Necessary and sufficient conditions for (M,F) to be Berwald (resp. weakly Berwald, Landsberg, weakly Landsberg) manifold are obtained. Thus an effective method for constru…
In this paper we investigate the following question: under what conditions can a second-order homogeneous ordinary differential equation (spray) be the geodesic equation of a Finsler space. We show that the Euler-Lagrange partial differential system on the energy function can be reduced to a first order system on this same function. In this way we are able to give effective necessary and sufficient conditions for the local existence of a such Finsler metric in terms of the holonomy algebra generated by horizontal vector-fields. We also consider the Landsberg metrizability problem and prove sim…
In this paper, we study almost regular Landsberg general $(α,β)$-metrics in Finsler geometry. The corresponding equivalent equations are given. By solving the equations, we give the classification of Landsberg general $(α,β)$-metrics under the conditon that $β$ is closed and conformal to $α$. Under this condition, we prove that regular Landsberg general $(α,β)$-metrics must be Berwaldian when the dimension is greater than two. For the almost regular case, the classification also is given and some new non-Berwaldian Landsberg metrics are found.
In this paper, we study a new class of Finsler metrics, F=αϕ(b^2,s), s:=β/α, defined by a Riemannian metric αand 1-form β. It is called general (α, β) metric. In this paper, we assume ϕbe coefficient by s and βbe closed and conformal. We find a nessecary and sufficient condition for the metric of relatively isotropic mean Landsberg curvature to be Berwald.
In the previous work, the notion of the Finsleroid--Finsler space have been formulated and the necessary and sufficient conditions for the space to be of the Landsberg type have been found. In the present paper, starting with particular spray coefficients, we demonstrate how the Landsberg condition can explicitly appear in case of the Finsleroid--type metric function. Calculations are supplementing by a convenient special Maple--program. The general form of the associated geodesic spray coefficients is presented for such metric function under the condition of constancy of the Finsleroid charge…
We prove a Gauss-Bonnet type formula for Riemann-Finsler surfaces of non-constant indicatrix volume and with regular piecewise smooth boundary. We give a Hadamard type theorem for N-parallels of a Landsberg surface.
In this note, we show that the examples of non Berwaldian Landsberg surfaces with vanishing flag curvature, obtained in \cite{Zhou}, are in fact Berwaldian. Consequently, Bryant's claim is still unverified.
A piecewise flat Finsler metric on a triangulated surface $M$ is a metric whose restriction to any triangle is a flat triangle in some Minkowski space with straight edges. One of the main purposes of this work is to study the properties of geodesics on a piecewise flat Finsler surface, especially when it meets a vertex. Using the edge-crossing equation, we define two classes of piecewise flat Finsler surfaces, namely, Landsberg type and Berwald type. We deduce an explicit condition for a geodesic to be extendable at a vertex, and define the curvature which measures the \textit{amount} of such …
In this Note, we prove that every m-th root Finsler metric with isotropic Landsberg curvature reduces to a Landsberg metric. Then, we show that every m-th root metric with almost vanishing H-curvature has vanishing H-curvature.
In this paper, we classify the spherically symmetric Berwald metrics in $\mathbb{R}^n$. For the spherically symmetric Landsberg metrics, we prove that there do not exist any non-Berwald metrics among the regular case. The partial differential equation systems which can respectively characterize the spherically symmetric Finsler metrics with constant flag curvature and Einstein metrics of this type is also obtained. Utilizing these equations, we find an effective way to construct the non-projective, non-Randers Finsler metrics with constant flag curvature and many explicit examples are given by…
Based on a self-contained, coordinate-free exposition of the necessary concepts and tools of spray and Finsler geometry (with detailed proofs), we derive new results among others on the consequences of the direction-independence of the Landsberg tensor and the stretch tensor of a Finsler manifold. We show that an at least 3-dimensional Finsler manifold with vanishing projected Berwald tensor is a Berwald manifold. To obtain consequences in two dimensions, we transcript Berwald's classical theory on 2-dimensional Finsler manifolds in our setup. We prove criteria and necessary conditions for Fin…
Finsleroid-Finsler metrics form an important class of singular (y-local) Finsler metrics. They were introduced by G. S. Asanov [2] in 2006. As the special case of the general construction Asanov produced singular (y - local) examples of Landsberg spaces of dimension at least three that are not of Berwald type. The existence of regular (y - global) Landsberg metrics that are not of Berwald type is an open problem up to this day; for a detailed exposition of the so-called unicorn problem in Finsler geometry see D. Bao [3]. In this paper we are going to characterize the Finsleroid-Finsler metrics…
This paper is concerned with the holonomy of a class of spaces which includes Landsberg spaces of Finsler geometry. The methods used are those of Lie groupoids and algebroids as developed by Mackenzie. We prove a version of the Ambrose-Singer Theorem for such spaces. The paper ends with a discussion of how the results may be extended to Finsler spaces and homogeneous nonlinear connections in general.
We show that, for Finsler spaces with cubic metric, Landsberg spaces are Berwaldian. Also, for decomposable metrics, we determine specific conditions for a space with cubic metric to be of Berwald type, thus refining the result in [6].
This thesis contains an introduction to the method of average in Finsler geometry. The method is applied to Berwald spaces, obtaining geodesic rigidity conditions. We prove that the Levi-Civita connection of any Riemannian metric affine equivalent to the Berwald metric leaves invariant the indicatrix of th Finsler metric F. A converse result also holds: if (M,F) is a Finsler structure such that there is a Riemannian connection whose Levi-Civita leaves invariant by parallel transport the indicatrix of the Finsler structure, then the structure (M,F) is Berwald. As an application we obtain a nece…
For Finsler spaces (M,F) endowed with m-th root metrics, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions in which they are projectively flat, or projectively related to Berwald/Riemann spaces. We also give a specific characterization for m-th root metrics spaces of Landsberg and of Berwald type.
Finsler metrics with relatively non-negative (non-positive, respectively), constant and isotropic stretch curvatures are investigated in this paper. In particular, it is proved that every non-Riemannian $(α, β)$-metric with a nonzero constant flag curvature and a non-zero relatively isotropic stretch curvature over a manifold of dimension $n\geq 3$ is of a characteristic scalar constant over the Finsler geodesics. It is also shown that every compact Finsler manifold with a relatively non-negative (non-positive, respectively) stretch curvature is a Landsberg metric. Finsler manifolds with $2$-d…
We prove that in a Finsler manifold with vanishing $χ$-curvature (in particular with constant flag curvature) some non-Riemannian geometric structures are geodesically invariant and hence they induce a set of non-Riemannian first integrals. Two alternative expressions of these first integrals can be obtained either in terms of the mean Berwald curvature, or as functions of the mean Cartan torsion and the mean Landsberg curvature.
The flag curvature of a Finsler metric is called a Riemannian quantity because it is an extension of sectional curvature in Riemannian geometry. In Finsler geometry, there are several non-Riemannian quantities such as the (mean) Cartan torsion, the (mean) Landsberg curvature and the S-curvature, which all vanish for Riemannian metrics. It is important to understand the geometric meanings of these quantities. In this paper, we study Finsler metrics of scalar curvature (i.e., the flag curvature is a scalar function on the slit tangent bundle) and partially determine the flag curvature when certa…
We use the technique of invariant frames to study a left invariant spray structure on a Lie group, and calculate its S-curvature and Riemann curvature, which generalizes the corresponding formulae in homogeneous Finsler geometry. Using the canonical bi-invariant Berwald spray structure as the reference, any left invariant spray structure can be associated with a spray vector field on the Lie algebra. We find the correspondence between geodesics for a left invariant spray structure and the inverse integral curves of its spray vector field. As an application for this correspondence, we provide a…
We adopt a vierbein formalism to study pseudo-Finsler spaces modeled on a pseudo-Minkowski space. We show that it is possible to obtain closed expressions for most of the geometric objects of the theory, including Berwald's curvature, Landsberg's tensor, Douglas' curvature, non-linear connection and Ricci scalar. These expressions are particularly convenient in computations since they factor the dependence on the base and the fiber. As an illustration, we study Lorentz-Finsler spaces modeled on the Bogoslovsky Lorentz-Minkowski space, and give sufficient conditions which guarantee the Berwald …
We describe the $(α,β)$-metrics whose the $T$-tensor vanishes ($T$-condition) and the $(α,β)$-metrics that satisfy the $σT$-condition $σ_hT^h_{ijk}=0$, where $σ_h=\frac{\partial σ}{\partial x^h}$ and $σ$ is a smooth function on $M$. These classes have already been obtained by Z. Shen and G. S. Asanov in a completely different approach. The Finsler metrics of the first class are Berwaldian, the metrics of the second class are almost regular non-Berwaldian Landsberg metrics.
In this paper, we study the left invariant spray geometry on a connected Lie group. Using the technique of invariant frames, we find the ordinary differential equations on the Lie algebra describing for a left invariant spray structure the linearly parallel translations along a geodesic and the nonlinearly parallel translations along a smooth curve. In these equations, the connection operator plays an important role. Using linearly parallel translations, we provide alternative interpretations or proofs for some homogeneous curvature formulae. Concerning the nonlinearly ones, we propose two que…
