The fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) nanostructures is of great interest to many areas of nanotechnology currently challenged by fundamental limitations of conventional lithography. One of the most promising direct-write methods for 3D nanofabrication is focused electron beam-induced deposition (FEBID), owing to its high spatial resolution and versatility. Here we extend FEBID to the growth of complex-shaped 3D nanostructures by combining the layer-by-layer approach of conventional macroscopic 3D printers and the proximity effect correction of electron beam lithography. This framework is based on the continuum FEBID model and is capable of adjusting for a wide range of effects present during deposition, including beam-induced heating, defocussing and gas flux anisotropies. We demonstrate the capabilities of our platform by fabricating free-standing nanowires, surfaces with varying curvatures and topologies, and general 3D objects, directly from standard stereolithography (STL) files and using different precursors. Real 3D nanoprinting as demonstrated here opens up exciting avenues for the study and exploitation of 3D nanoscale phenomena.
A proposal of a spin separator based on the spin Zeeman effect in Y-shaped nanostructure with a quantum point contact is presented. Our calculations show that the appropriate tuning of the quantum point contact potential and the external magnetic field leads to the spin separation of the current: electrons with opposite spins flow through the different output branches. We demonstrate that this effect is robust against the scattering on impurities. The proposed device can also operate as a spin detector, in which -- depending on the electron spin -- the current flows through one of the output b…
A scheme for a spin-polarized current separator is proposed by studying the spin-dependent electron transport of a fork-shaped nanostructure with Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC), connected to three leads with the same width. It is found that two spin-polarized currents are of the same magnitude but opposite polarizations can be generated simultaneously in the two output leads when the spin-unpolarized electrons injected from the input lead. The underlying physics is revealed to originate from the different spin-dependent conductance caused by the effects of Rashba SOC and the geometrical stru…
A significant part of the optical metamaterial phenomena has the plasmonic nature and their investigation requires very accurate knowledge of the fabricated structures shape with a focus on the periodical features. We describe a consistent approach to the shape reconstruction of the plasmonic nanostructures. This includes vertical and tilted spike AFM probes fabrication, AFM imaging and specific post-processing. We studied a complex-shaped chiral metamaterial and conclude that the described post-processing routine extends possibilities of the existing deconvolution algorithms in the case of pe…
The dynamics of a magnetic infinity-shaped nanostructure has been experimentally studied by two different techniques such as the sinusoidal resonance excitation and the damped short pulse excitation to measure the eigenfrequency of domain walls. Direct observation of the magnetic domain wall nucleation has been measured in the frequency domain. Electrical measurements of the domain wall dynamics in the frequency domain reveal the existence of multi-eigenmodes for large excitation amplitudes. The time-resolved measurements show that the frequency of the damped gyration is similar to that of the…
We investigate the Majorana fermions in a $T$-shaped semiconductor nanostructure with the Rashba spin-orbit coupling and a magnetic field in the proximity of an s-wave superconductor. It is found that the properties of the low-energy modes (including the Majorana and near-zero-energy modes) at the ends of this system are similar to those in the Majorana nanowire. However, very distinct from the nanowire, one Majorana mode emerges at the intersection of the $T$-shaped structure when the number of the low-energy modes at each end $N$ is odd, whereas neither Majorana nor near-zero-energy mode app…
Several spin-orbit effects allow performing spin to charge inter-conversion: the spin Hall effects, the Rashba effect, or the spin-momentum locking in topological insulators. Here we focus on how the detection of this inter-conversion can be made electrically, using three different cross-shaped nanostructures. We apply these measurement configurations to the case of the spin Hall effect in Pt, using CoFe electrodes to detect and inject spins. Both the direct and inverse spin Hall effect can be detected, with a spin Hall signal up to two order of magnitude higher than that of nonlocal measureme…
A description is given of a three-dimensional box-shaped graphene (BSG) nanostructure formed/uncovered by mechanical cleavage of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). The discovered nanostructure is a multilayer system of parallel hollow channels located along the surface and having quadrangular cross-section. The thickness of the channel walls/facets is approximately equal to 1 nm. The typical width of channel facets makes about 25 nm, the channel length is 390 nm and more. The investigation of the found nanostructure by means of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) allows us to draw a …
The nature of electronic eigenstates and quantum transport in a comb-shaped Fibonacci nanostructure model is investigated within a tight-binding framework. Periodic linear chains are side-attached to a Fibonacci chain, giving it the shape of an aperiodic comb. The effect of the side-attachments on the usual Cantor set energy spectrum of a Fibonacci chain is analyzed using the Greens function technique. A special correlation between the coupling of the side-attached chain with the Fibonacci chain and the inter-atomic coupling of the Fibonacci chain results in a dramatic triggering of the fragme…
We present an implementation of a new method for explicit simulations of time-dependent electric currents through nanojunctions. The method is based on unitary propagation of stroboscopic wave packet states and is designed to treat open systems with fluctuating number of electrons while preserving full quantum coherence throughout the whole infinite system. We demonstrate the performance of the method on a model system consisting of a ring-shaped nanojunction with two semi-infinite tight-binding leads. Time-dependent electron current responses to abrupt bias turn-on or gate potential switching…
Recently, focused electron beam induced deposition has been employed to prepare functional magnetic nanostructures with potential in nanomagnetic logic and sensing applications by using homonuclear precursor gases like Fe(CO)5 or Co2(CO)8. Here we show that an extension towards the fabrication of bi-metallic compounds is possible by using a single-source heteronuclear precursor gas. We have grown CoFe alloy magnetic nanostructures from the HFeCo3(CO)12 metal carbonyl precursor. The compositional analysis indicate that the samples contain about 80 at% of metal and 10 at% of carbon and oxygen. F…
In the majority of cases nanostructures prepared by focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID) employing an organometallic precursor contain predominantly carbon-based ligand dissociation products. This is unfortunate with regard to using this high-resolution direct-write approach for the preparation of nanostructures for various fields, such as mesoscopic physics, micromagnetism, electronic correlations, spin-dependent transport and numerous applications. Here we present an in-situ cleaning approach to obtain pure Co-FEBID nanostructures. The purification procedure lies in the exposure …
Controlling the magnetic ground states at the nanoscale is a long-standing basic research problem and an important issue in magnetic storage technologies. Here, we designed a nanostructured material that exhibits very unusual hysteresis loops due to a transition between vortex and double pole states. Arrays of 700 nm diamond-shape nanodots consisting of Py(30 nm)/Ru(tRu)/Py(30 nm) (Py, permalloy (Ni80Fe20)) trilayers were fabricated by interference lithography and e-beam evaporation. We show that varying the Ru interlayer spacer thickness (tRu) governs the interaction between the Py layers. We…

Using scanning focused laser beam setup, micropatterns on GeSe2 NSs film are created directly on the substrate. Controlled structural and chemical changes of the NSs are achieved by varying laser power and treatment environment. The laser modified GeSe2 NSs exhibit distinct optical, electrical and optoelectrical properties. Detailed characterization is carried out and the possible mechanisms for the laser induced changes are discussed. The laser modified NSs…
The controlled creation of defect center---nanocavity systems is one of the outstanding challenges for efficiently interfacing spin quantum memories with photons for photon-based entanglement operations in a quantum network. Here, we demonstrate direct, maskless creation of atom-like single silicon-vacancy (SiV) centers in diamond nanostructures via focused ion beam implantation with $\sim 32$ nm lateral precision and $< 50$ nm positioning accuracy relative to a nanocavity. Moreover, we determine the Si+ ion to SiV center conversion yield to $\sim 2.5\%$ and observe a 10-fold conversion yield …
Focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID) is a direct-write method for the fabrication of nanostructures whose lateral resolution rivals that of advanced electron lithography but is in addition capable of creating complex three-dimensional nano-architectures. Over the last decade several new developments in FEBID and focused electron beam induced processing (FEBIP) have led to a growing number of scientific contributions in solid state physics and materials science based on FEBID-specific materials and particular shapes and arrangements of the employed nanostructures. In this review an …
We have performed theoretical and experimental studies of field emission from nanostructured semiconductor cathodes. Resonant tunneling through electric-field-induced interface bound states is found to strongly affect the field-emission characteristics. Our analytical theory predicts power-law and Lorentzian-shaped current-voltage curves for resonant-tunneling field emission from three-dimensional substrates and two-dimensional accumulation layers, respectively. These predicted line shapes are observed in field emission characteristics from self-assembled silicon nanostructures. A simple model…
Recently, we suggested an unconventional approach [the so-called Internal-Field-Guarded-Active-Region Design (IFGARD)] for the elimination of the crystal polarization field induced quantum confined Stark effect (QCSE) in polar semiconductor heterostructures. And in this work, we demonstrate by means of micro-photoluminescence techniques the successful tuning as well as the elimination of the QCSE in strongly polar $[000\bar{1}]$ wurtzite GaN/AlN nanodiscs while reducing the exciton life times by more than two orders of magnitude. The IFGARD based elimination of the QCSE is independent of any s…
We study electronic transport in graphene/ferromagnetic insulator hybrid devices. The system comprises an armchair graphene nanoribbon with a lens-shaped EuO ferromagnetic insulator layer deposited on top of it. When the device supports a large number of propagating modes, the proximity exchange interaction of electrons with the magnetic ions of the ferromagnetic insulator results in electrons being spatially localised at different spots depending on their spin. We found the spin-dependent electron focusing is robust under moderate edge disorder. A spin-polarised electric current can be genera…
Free standing beams containing a two-dimensional electron system are shaped from a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure. Quantum point contacts and (double) quantum dots are laterally defined using metal top gates. We investigate the electronic properties of these nanostructures by transport spectroscopy. Tunable localized electron states in freely suspended nanostructures are a promising tool to investigate the electron-phonon-interaction.
We have studied the magnetic reversal of L-shaped nanostructures fabricated from (Ga,Mn)As. The strain relaxation due to the lithographic patterning results in each arm having a uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. Our analysis confirms that the magnetic reversal takes place via a combination of coherent rotation and domain wall propagation with the domain wall positioned at the corner of the device at intermediate stages of the magnetic hysteresis loops. The domain wall energy can be extracted from our analysis. Such devices have found implementation in studies of current induced domain wall motion …
Electron beams can acquire designed phase modulations by passing through nanostructured material phase plates. These phase modulations enable electron wavefront shaping and benefit electron microscopy, spectroscopy, lithography, and interferometry. However, in the fabrication of electron phase plates, the typically used focused-ion-beam-milling method limits the fabrication throughput and hence the active area of the phase plates. Here, we fabricated large-area electron phase plates with electron-beam lithography and reactive-ion-etching. The phase plates are characterized by electron diffract…

Focused ion beam irradiation of metastable Fe$_{78}$Ni$_{22}$ thin films grown on Cu(100) substrates is used to create ferromagnetic, body-centered-cubic patterns embedded into paramagnetic, face-centered-cubic surrounding. The structural and magnetic phase transformation can be controlled by varying parameters of the transforming gallium ion beam. The focused ion beam parameters as ion dose, number of scans, and scanning direction can be used not only to control a degree of transformation, but also to change the otherwise four-fold in-plane magnetic anisotropy into the uniaxial anisotropy alo…
We investigate the electrical and magneto-transport properties of Pt-C granular metals prepared by focused-electron-beam induced deposition. In particular, we consider samples close to the metal-insulator-transition obtained from as-grown deposits by means of a low- energy electron irradiation treatment. The temperature dependence of the conductivity shows a lnT behavior with a transition to square root of T at low temperature, as expected for systems in the strong-coupling tunneling regime. The magnetoresistance is positive and is described within the wave-function shrinkage model, normally u…
We demonstrate a capability of deterministic doping at the single atom level using a combination of direct write focused ion beam and solid-state ion detectors. The focused ion beam system can position a single ion to within 35 nm of a targeted location and the detection system is sensitive to single low energy heavy ions. This platform can be used to deterministically fabricate single atom devices in materials where the nanostructure and ion detectors can be integrated, including donor-based qubits in Si and color centers in diamond.
Electron transparent TEM lamella with unaltered microstructure and chemistry is the prerequisite for successful TEM explorations. Currently, TEM specimen preparation of quantum nanostructures, such as quantum dots (QDs), remains a challenge. In this work, we optimize the sample-preparation routine for achieving high-quality TEM specimens consisting of SrRuO3 (SRO) QDs grown on SrTiO3 (STO) substrates. We demonstrate that a combination of ion-beam-milling techniques can produce higher-quality specimens of quantum nanostructures compared to TEM specimens prepared by a combination of tripod polis…
Motivated by recent advances in fabricating graphene nanostructures, we find that an electron can be trapped in Z-shaped graphene nanoconstriction with zigzag edges. The central section of the constriction operates as a single-level quantum dot, as the current flow towards the adjunct sections (rotated by 60 degree) is strongly suppressed due to mismatched valley polarization, although each section in isolation shows maximal quantum value of the conductance $G_0=2e^2/h$. We further show, that the trapping mechanism is insensitive to the details of constriction geometry, except from the case wh…
We demonstrate fully three-dimensional and patterned localization of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond with coherence times in excess of 1 ms. Nitrogen δ-doping during CVD diamond growth vertically confines nitrogen to 4 nm while electron irradiation with a transmission electron microscope (TEM) laterally confines vacancies to less than 1 μm. We characterize the effects of electron energy and dose on NV formation. Importantly, our technique enables the formation of reliably high-quality NV centers inside diamond nanostructures, with applications in quantum information and sensing.
Significant progress has been made in recent studies of thermal and thermoelectric transport phenomena in nanostructures and low-dimensional systems. This article reviews several intriguing quantum and classical size effects on thermal and thermoelectric properties that have been predicted by theoretical calculations or observed in experiments. Attention is focused on the Casimir limit in phonon boundary scattering and the effect of phonon confinement on the lattice thermal conductivity of semiconductor nanowires (NWs) and nanomeshes; the effects of thickness, lateral size, and interface inter…
We study all-carbon-hydrogen molecular transistors where zigzag graphene nanoribbons play the role of three metallic electrodes connected to a ring-shaped 18-annulene molecule. Using the nonequilibrium Green function formalism combined with density functional theory, recently extended to multiterminal devices, we show that the proposed nanostructures exhibit exponentially small transmission when the source and drain electrodes are attached in a configuration that ensures destructive interference of electron paths around the ring. The third electrode, functioning either as an attached infinite-…
A scale for magnetic field resilience of a superconductor is set by the paramagnetic limit. Comparing the condensation energy of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) singlet ground state with the paramagnetically polarised state suggests that for an applied field ${μ_0}H > 1.8~T_c$ (in SI), singlet pairing is not energetically favourable. Materials exceeding or approaching this limit are interesting from fundamental and technological perspectives. This may be a potential indicator of triplet superconductivity, Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) pairing and other mechanisms involving topolo…
Nano--metal/semiconductor junction dependent porosification of silicon (Si) has been studied here. The silicon (Si) nanostructures (NS) have been textured on n-- and p-- type silicon wafers using Ag and Au metal nano particles induced chemical etching. The combinations of n--Si/Ag and p--Si/Au form ohmic contact and result in the same texturization on the Si surface on porosification where tent--shaped morphology has been observed consistently with n-- and p--type Si. Whereas, porosification result in different surface texturization for other two combinations (p--Si/Ag and n--Si/Au) where Scho…
We have fabricated C-Ga-O nanowires by gallium focused ion beam-induced deposition from the carbon-based precursor phenanthrene. The electrical conductivity of the nanowires is weakly temperature dependent below 300 K, and indicates a transition to a superconducting state below Tc = 7 K. We have measured the temperature dependence of the upper critical field Hc2(T), and estimate a zero temperature critical field of 8.8 T. The Tc of this material is approximately 40% higher than that of any other direct write nanowire, such as those based on C-W-Ga, expanding the possibility of fabricating dire…
We study the impact of Ga ion exposure on the local and non-local magnetotransport response in heterostructures of the ferrimagnetic insulator yttrium iron garnet and platinum. In particular, we cut the yttrium iron garnet layer in between two electrically separated wires of platinum using a Ga ion beam, and study the ensuing changes in the magnetoresistive response. We find that the non-local magnetoresistance signal vanishes when the yttrium iron garnet film between the Pt wires is fully cut, although the local spin Hall magnetoresistance signal remains finite. This observation corroborates …
Fe-Si binary compounds have been fabricated by focused electron beam induced deposition by the alternating use of iron pentacarbonyl, Fe(CO)5, and neopentasilane, Si5H12 as precursor gases. The fabrication procedure consisted in preparing multilayer structures which were treated by low-energy electron irradiation and annealing to induce atomic species intermixing. In this way we are able to fabricate FeSi and Fe3Si binary compounds from [Fe=Si]2 and [Fe3=Si]2 multilayers, as shown by transmission electron microscopy investigations. This fabrication procedure is useful to obtain nanostructured …
Focused-ion-beam milling is used to fabricate nanostencil masks suitable for the fabrication of magnetic nanostructures relevant for spin transfer torque studies. Nanostencil masks are used to define the device dimensions prior to the growth of the thin film stack. They consist of a wet etch resistant top layer and an insulator on top of a pre-patterned bottom electrode. The insulator supports a hard mask and gives rise to an undercut by its selective etching. The approach is demonstrated by fabricating current perpendicular to the plane Co/Cu/Co nanopillar junctions, which exhibit current-ind…

In this work we study the properties of hybrid graphene/gold nanoparticle structures by Raman spectroscopy and Scanning Probe Methods. The nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by local annealing of gold thin films using focused laser beam. The method resulted in a patterned surface, with NPs formed at arbitrarily chosen microscale areas. Graphene grown by chemical vapour deposition was transferred onto the prepared, closely spaced gold NPs. While we found that…

Understanding light-matter interactions using localized surface plasmons (LSPs) is of fundamental interest in classical and quantum plasmonics and has a wide range of applications. In order to understand the spatial properties of LSPs, electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) is a common and powerful method of spatially resolving the extreme localized fields that can be obtained with metal resonators. However, modelling EELS for general shaped resonators presents a major challenge in computational electrodynamics, requiring the full photon Green function as a function of two space points and f…
