We have studied the magnetic reversal of L-shaped nanostructures fabricated from (Ga,Mn)As. The strain relaxation due to the lithographic patterning results in each arm having a uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. Our analysis confirms that the magnetic reversal takes place via a combination of coherent rotation and domain wall propagation with the domain wall positioned at the corner of the device at intermediate stages of the magnetic hysteresis loops. The domain wall energy can be extracted from our analysis. Such devices have found implementation in studies of current induced domain wall motion and have the potential for application as non-volatile memory elements.
We propose a mechanism to drive singlet-triplet spin transitions electrically, in a wide class of graphene nanostructures that present pairs of in-gap zero modes, localized at opposite sublattices. Examples are rectangular nanographenes with short zigzag edges, armchair ribbon heterojunctions with topological in-gap states and graphene islands with sp$^3$ functionalization. The interplay between the hybridization of zero modes and Coulomb repulsion leads to symmetric exchange interaction that favors a singlet ground state. Application of an off-plane electric field to the graphene nanostructur…
Surface diffusion has an impact on the lateral resolution of nanostructures in bottom-up atom nanofabrication. In this paper we study the effects of the gallium atoms self-assembled on silicon surfaces (100) patterned with trenches at different slopes. These particular substrate morphologies have been made to enable an effective deposition rate variation along the surface. In this way we experimentally mimic the effect of the atomic flux modulation created by standing wave during an atom nanofabrication experiment. Even if we observe self organization of gallium atoms on the surface, we conclu…
Synthetic antiferromagnet (SAF) nanostructures with interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can host topologically distinct spin textures such as skyrmions and thus are regarded as promising candidates for both spintronics and magnonics applications. Here, we present comprehensive micromagnetic simulations of such material systems and discuss the rich phase diagrams that contain various types of magnetic configurations. Aside from the static properties, we further discuss the resonant excitations of the calculated magnetic states which include individual skyrmions and skyrmioniums. Final…
Employing electrons for direct control of nanoscale reaction is highly desirable since it provides fabrication of nanostructures with different properties at atomic resolution and with flexibility of dimension and location. Here, applying in situ transmission electron microscopy, we show the reversible oxidation and reduction kinetics in Ag, well controlled by changing the dose rate of electron beam. Aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscopy observation reveals that O atoms are preferably inserted and extracted along the {111} close-packed planes of Ag, leading to t…
Helicity indicates the in-plane magnetic-moment swirling direction of a skyrmionic configuration. The ability to reverse the helicity of a skyrmionic bubble via purely electrical means has been predicted in frustrated magnetic systems, however its experimental observation has remained challenging. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the current-driven helicity reversal of the skyrmionic bubble in a nanostructured frustrated Fe3Sn2 magnet. The critical current density required to trigger the helicity reversal is 109 - 1010 A/m2, with a corresponding pulse-width varying from 1 μs to 100 ns. Comp…
Gold nanoparticle assemblies show a strong plasmonic response due to the combined effects of the individual nanoparticles' plasmon modes. Increasing the number of nanoparticles in structured assemblies leads to significant shifts in the optical and physical properties. We use Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) simulations to analyze the electromagnetic response of structurally ordered gold nanorods in monomer and dimer configurations. The plasmonic coupling between nanorods in monomers or dimers configurations provides a unique technique for tuning the spectrum intensity, spatial distributio…
Several spin-orbit effects allow performing spin to charge inter-conversion: the spin Hall effects, the Rashba effect, or the spin-momentum locking in topological insulators. Here we focus on how the detection of this inter-conversion can be made electrically, using three different cross-shaped nanostructures. We apply these measurement configurations to the case of the spin Hall effect in Pt, using CoFe electrodes to detect and inject spins. Both the direct and inverse spin Hall effect can be detected, with a spin Hall signal up to two order of magnitude higher than that of nonlocal measureme…
Two-dimensional topological solitons, commonly called Skyrmions, are extensively studied in solid-state magnetic nanostructures and promise many spintronics applications. However, three-dimensional topological solitons dubbed hopfions have not been demonstrated as stable spatially localized structures in solid-state magnetic materials. Here we model the existence of such static solitons with different Hopf index values in noncentrosymmetric solid magnetic nanostructures with a perpendicular interfacial magnetic anisotropy. We show how this surface anisotropy, along with the Dzyaloshinskii-Mori…
We have investigated the equilibrium states of ferromagnetic single wall nanotubes by means of atomistic Monte Carlo simulations of a zig-zag lattice of Heisenberg spins on the surface of a cylinder. The main focus of our study is to determine how the competition between short-range exchange (J) and long-range dipolar (D) interactions influences the low temperature magnetic order of the nanotubes as well as the thermal-driven transitions involved. Apart from the uniform and vortex states occurring for dominant J or D, we find that helical states become stable for a range of intermediate values…
We report differential phase contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of nanoscale magnetic objects in Kagome ferromagnet Fe$_3$Sn$_2$ nanostructures. This technique can directly detect the deflection angle of a focused electron beam, thus allowing clear identification of the real magnetic structures of two magnetic objects including three-ring and complex arch-shaped vortices in Fe$_3$Sn$_2$ by Lorentz transmission electron microscopy imaging. Numerical calculations based on real material-specific parameters well reproduced the experimental results, showing that the magnetic o…
