We have fabricated C-Ga-O nanowires by gallium focused ion beam-induced deposition from the carbon-based precursor phenanthrene. The electrical conductivity of the nanowires is weakly temperature dependent below 300 K, and indicates a transition to a superconducting state below Tc = 7 K. We have measured the temperature dependence of the upper critical field Hc2(T), and estimate a zero temperature critical field of 8.8 T. The Tc of this material is approximately 40% higher than that of any other direct write nanowire, such as those based on C-W-Ga, expanding the possibility of fabricating direct-write nanostructures that superconduct above liquid helium temperatures
We characterize parallel double quantum dot Josephson junctions based on closely-grown double nanowires bridged by in-situ deposited superconductors. The parallel double dot behavior occurs despite the closeness of the nanowires and the potential risk of nanowire clamping during growth. By tuning the charge filling and lead couplings, we map out the simplest parallel double quantum dot Yu-Shiba-Rusinov phase diagram. Our quasi-independent two-wire hybrids show promise for the realization of exotic topological phases.
We present detailed Raman studies of graphene deposited on gallium nitride nanowires with different variations in height. Our results show that different density and height of nanowires being in contact with graphene impact graphene properties like roughness, strain and carrier concentration as well as density and type of induced defects. Detailed analysis of Raman spectra of graphene deposited on different nanowire substrates shows that bigger differences in nanowires height increase graphene strain, while higher number of nanowires in contact with graphene locally reduce the strain. Moreover…
The surface-enhanced Raman scattering in graphene deposited on AlxGa1-xN/GaN axial heterostructure nanowires was investigated. The intensity of graphene Raman spectra was found not to be correlated with aluminium content. Analysis of graphene Raman bands parameters, KPFM and electroreflectance showed a screening of polarization charges. Theoretical calculations showed that plasmon resonance in graphene is far beyond the Raman spectral range. This excludes the presence of an electromagnetic mechanism of SERS and therefore suggests the chemical mechanism of enhancement.
The influence of GaN nanowires on the optical and electrical properties of graphene deposited on them was studied using Raman spectroscopy and microwave induced electron transport method. It was found that interaction with the nanowires induces spectral changes as well as large enhancement of Raman scattering intensity. Surprisingly, the smallest enhancement (about 30-fold) was observed for the defect induced D' process and the highest intensity increase (over 50-fold) was found for the 2D transition. The observed energy shifts of the G and 2D bands allowed to determine carrier concentration f…
Iron nanowires with a square cross section are grown by pulsed electrodeposition within a newly developed nanochannel template that allows for easy characterization. Measurements of the magnetoresistance as a function of magnetic field and temperature are performed within a large parameter window allowing for the investigation of the magnonic contribution to the magnetoresistance of electrodeposited iron nanowires. Values for the temperature dependent magnon stiffness D(T) are extracted.
Recent experiments show the possibility of realization of the Majorana quasiparticles at the end of the low dimensional structures. In this type of systems, interplay between spin orbit coupling, superconductivity and magnetic field leads to the emergence of the Majorana bound states in the topologically non-trivial phase. Here, we study the nanowire located partially at the normal and superconducting base, using microscopic model of this structure and the Bogoliubov--de~Gennes technique. We discuss the possibility of the leakage of the Majorana bound state, located at the part above supercond…
Parallel one-dimensional semiconductor channels connected by a superconducting strip constitute the core platform in several recent quantum device proposals that rely e.g. on Andreev processes or topological effects. In order to realize these proposals, the actual material systems must have high crystalline purity and the coupling between the different elements should be controllable in terms of their interfaces and geometry. We present a strategy for synthesizing double InAs nanowires by the vapor-liquid-solid mechanism using III-V molecular beam epitaxy. A superconducting layer is deposited …
We have measured the electronic heat capacity of thin film nanowires of copper and silver at temperatures 0.1 - 0.3 K; the films were deposited by standard electron-beam evaporation. The specific heat of the Ag films of sub-100 nm thickness agrees with the bulk value and the free-electron estimate, whereas that of similar Cu films exceeds the corresponding reference values by one order of magnitude. The origin of the anomalously high heat capacity of copper films remains unknown for the moment. Based on the low heat capacity and the possibility to devise a tunnel probe thermometer on it, the A…
A new fabrication process is developed for growing Bi2Se3 topological insulators in the form of nanowires/nanobelts and ultra-thin films. It consists of two consecutive procedures: first Bi2Se3 nanowires/nanobelts are deposited by standard catalyst free vapour-solid deposition on different substrates positioned inside a quartz tube. Then, the Bi2Se3, stuck on the inner surface of the quartz tube, is re-evaporated and deposited in the form of ultra-thin films on new substrates at temperature below 100 °C, which is of relevance for flexible electronic applications. The method is new, quick, very…
Understanding the microscopic origin of the gate-controlled supercurrent (GCS) in superconducting nanobridges is crucial for engineering superconducting switches suitable for a variety of electronic applications. The origin of GCS is controversial, and various mechanisms have been proposed to explain it. In this work, we have investigated the GCS in a Ta layer deposited on the surface of InAs nanowires. Comparison between switching current distributions at opposite gate polarities and between the gate dependence of two opposite side gates with different nanowire$-$gate spacings shows that the …
We demonstrate the possibility to write and modulate the magnetic domain walls in a TbFeCo single layer nanowire (300 nm width, 150 $μ$m length). To realize this, a tiny magnetic domain was nucleated by an Oersted field produced by a 1.6 MHz pulse current (35 mA in amplitude, 5-40 ns in length) crossed the wire. To write the wall to the wire, a DC current was used to drive the nucleated domain (with two walls in two sides) to the wire in accordance with spin-transfer torque mechanism. A critical current density of $J_c = 3.5\times10^{10} Am^{-2}$ was required to control the motion of the walls…
Superconductor/semiconductor-nanowire hybrid structures can serve as versatile building blocks to realize Majorana circuits or superconducting qubits based on quantized levels such as Andreev qubits. For all these applications it is essential that the superconductor-semiconductor interface is as clean as possible. Furthermore, the shape and dimensions of the superconducting electrodes needs to be precisely controlled. We fabricated self-defined InAs/Al core/shell nanowire junctions by a fully in-situ approach, which meet all these criteria. Transmission electron microscopy measurements confirm…
We report on the fabrication and electrical characterization of field-effect devices based on wire-shaped InP crystals grown from Au catalyst particles by a vapor-liquid-solid process. Our InP wires are n-type doped with diameters in the 40-55 nm range and lengths of several microns. After being deposited on an oxidized Si substrate, wires are contacted individually via e-beam fabricated Ti/Al electrodes. We obtain contact resistances as low as ~10 kOhm, with minor temperature dependence. The distance between the electrodes varies between 0.2 and 2 micron. The electron density in the wires is …
We calculate the conductance of quasi-one-dimensional nanowires with electronic states confined to a surface charge layer, in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. Two-terminal magnetoconductance (MC) between two leads deposited on the nanowire via tunnel barriers is dominated by density-of-states (DOS) singularities, when the leads are well apart. There is also a mesoscopic correction due to a higher-order coherent tunneling between the leads for small lead separation. The corresponding MC structure depends on the interference between electron propagation via different channels connecting…
We develop an InAs nanowire gate-all-around field-effect transistor using a transparent conductive zinc oxide (ZnO) gate electrode, which is in-situ atomic layer deposited after growth of gate insulator of Al2O3. We perform magneto-transport measurements and find a crossover from weak localization to weak antilocalization effect with increasing gate voltage, which demonstrates that the Rashba spin-orbit coupling is tuned by the gate electrode. The efficiency of the gate tuning of the spin-orbit interaction is higher than those obtained for two-dimensional electron gas, and as high as that for …
We report on \textit{in situ} growth of crystalline Al and Nb shells on InAs nanowires. The nanowires are grown on Si(111) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) without foreign catalysts in the vapor-solid mode. The metal shells are deposited by electron-beam evaporation in a metal MBE. High quality supercondonductor/semiconductor hybrid structures such as Al/InAs and Nb/InAs are of interest for ongoing research in the fields of gateable Josephson junctions and quantum information related research. Systematic investigations of the deposition parameters suitable for metal shell growth are …
Theoretical studies have shown that Majorana bound states can be induced at the ends of a one dimensional wire, a phenomenon possible due to the interplay between s-wave superconductivity, spin-orbit coupling, and an external magnetic field. These states have been observed in superconductor-semiconductor hybrid nanostructures in the presence of a Zeeman field, and in the limit of a low density of particles. In this paper, we demonstrate and discuss the possibility of the emergence of Majorana bound states in a superconducting Rashba nanowire deposited on an antiferromagnetically ordered surfac…
We report the development of nanowire field-effect transistors featuring an ultra-thin parylene film as a polymer gate insulator. The room temperature, gas-phase deposition of parylene is an attractive alternative to oxide insulators prepared at high temperatures using atomic layer deposition. We discuss our custom-built parylene deposition system, which is designed for reliable and controlled deposition of <100 nm thick parylene films on III-V nanowires standing vertically on a growth substrate or horizontally on a device substrate. The former case gives conformally-coated nanowires, which we…
We evaluate the performance of hybrid microwave resonators made by combining sputtered Nb thin films with Tungsten nanowires grown with a He-beam induced deposition technique. Depending on growth conditions the nanowires have a typical width $w\in[35-75]$~nm and thickness $t\in[5-40]$~nm. We observe a high normal state resistance $R_{sq}\in [65-150]$ $Ω/sq$ which together with a critical temperature $T_c\in[4-6]~K$ ensure a high kinetic inductance making the resonator strongly nonlinear. Both lumped and coplanar waveguide resonators were fabricated and measured at low temperature exhibiting in…
Because of their universal nature, Fano fluctuations are expected to influence the response of superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs). We predict that photon counting rate ($PCR$) as a function of bias current ($I_B$) in SNSPDs is described by an integral over a transverse coordinate-dependent complementary error function. The latter describes smearing of local responses due to Fano fluctuations of the amount of energy deposited into electronic system. The finite width, $σ$, of the $PCR$ vs $I_B$ arises from fluctuations in the energy partition between quasiparticles and pho…
Detailed understanding of spin dynamics in magnetic nanomaterials is necessary for developing ultrafast, low-energy and high-density spintronic logic and memory. Here, we develop micromagnetic models and analytical solutions to elucidate the effect of increasing damping and uniaxial anisotropy on magnetic field pulse-assisted switching time, energy and field requirements of nanowires with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and yttrium iron garnet-like spin transport properties. A nanowire is initially magnetized using an external magnetic field pulse (write) and self-relaxation. Next, magnetic …
Co(x nm, x=10nm or 40nm)/Cu(5nm)/Co(2.5nm) layers were deposited between copper electrodes in SiO2 vias. Magnetic states, and the corresponding resistance states, of these devices were switched by electric currents perpendicular to the layers. The I-V loops show asymmetric behavior with hysteresis. When electrons flow in the direction from thick to thin Co layer (positive current), multiple switches were observed on increasing current up to a chosen maximum positive I(write). On decreasing current from I(write), the I-V curve was smooth and characterized by considerably lower resistance. Under…
We report the observation of magnetic and resistive aging in a self assembled nanoparticle system produced in a multilayer Co/Sb sandwich. The aging decays are characterized by an initial slow decay followed by a more rapid decay in both the magnetization and resistance. The decays are large accounting for almost 70% of the magnetization and almost 40% of the resistance for samples deposited at 35 $^oC$. For samples deposited at 50 $^oC$ the magnetization decay accounts for $\sim 50%$ of the magnetization and 50% of the resistance. During the more rapid part of the decay, the concavity of the …
The fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) nanostructures is of great interest to many areas of nanotechnology currently challenged by fundamental limitations of conventional lithography. One of the most promising direct-write methods for 3D nanofabrication is focused electron beam-induced deposition (FEBID), owing to its high spatial resolution and versatility. Here we extend FEBID to the growth of complex-shaped 3D nanostructures by combining the layer-by-layer approach of conventional macroscopic 3D printers and the proximity effect correction of electron beam lithography. This framework is …
In the majority of cases nanostructures prepared by focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID) employing an organometallic precursor contain predominantly carbon-based ligand dissociation products. This is unfortunate with regard to using this high-resolution direct-write approach for the preparation of nanostructures for various fields, such as mesoscopic physics, micromagnetism, electronic correlations, spin-dependent transport and numerous applications. Here we present an in-situ cleaning approach to obtain pure Co-FEBID nanostructures. The purification procedure lies in the exposure …
