We present a new Riemannian metric, termed Log-Cholesky metric, on the manifold of symmetric positive definite (SPD) matrices via Cholesky decomposition. We first construct a Lie group structure and a bi-invariant metric on Cholesky space, the collection of lower triangular matrices whose diagonal elements are all positive. Such group structure and metric are then pushed forward to the space of SPD matrices via the inverse of Cholesky decomposition that is a bijective map between Cholesky space and SPD matrix space. This new Riemannian metric and Lie group structure fully circumvent swelling effect, in the sense that the determinant of the Fréchet average of a set of SPD matrices under the presented metric, called Log-Cholesky average, is between the minimum and the maximum of the determinants of the original SPD matrices. Comparing to existing metrics such as the affine-invariant metric and Log-Euclidean metric, the presented metric is simpler, more computationally efficient and numerically stabler. In particular, parallel transport along geodesics under Log-Cholesky metric is given in a closed and easy-to-compute form.
We classify semi-Riemannian submersions with connected totally geodesic fibres from a real pseudo-hyperbolic space onto a semi-Riemannian manifold under the assumption that the dimension of the fibres is less than or equal to three and the metrics induced on fibres are negative definite. Also, we obtain the classification of semi-Riemannian submersions with connected complex totally geodesic fibres from a complex pseudo-hyperbolic space onto a semi-Riemannian manifold under the assumption that the dimension of the fibres is less than or equal to two and the metric induced on fibres are negativ…
Symmetric Positive Definite (SPD) matrices have been used in many fields of medical data analysis. Many Riemannian metrics have been defined on this manifold but the choice of the Riemannian structure lacks a set of principles that could lead one to choose properly the metric. This drives us to introduce the principle of balanced metrics that relate the affine-invariant metric with the Euclidean and inverse-Euclidean metric, or the Bogoliubov-Kubo-Mori metric with the Euclidean and log-Euclidean metrics. We introduce two new families of balanced metrics, the mixed-power-Euclidean and the mixed…
The curvature tensor and the scalar curvature are computed in the space of positive definite real matrices endowed by the Kubo-Mori inner product as a Riemannian metric.
We consider Gaussian distributions on certain Riemannian symmetric spaces. In contrast to the Euclidean case, it is challenging to compute the normalization factors of such distributions, which we refer to as partition functions. In some cases, such as the space of Hermitian positive definite matrices or hyperbolic space, it is possible to compute them exactly using techniques from random matrix theory. However, in most cases which are important to applications, such as the space of symmetric positive definite (SPD) matrices or the Siegel domain, this is only possible numerically. Moreover, wh…
In the present article the geometry of semi-Riemannian manifolds with nonholonomic constraints is studied. These manifolds can be considered as analogues to the sub-Riemannian manifolds, where the positively definite metric is substituted by a nondegenerate metric. To study properties of the exponential map the Christoffel symbols and other differential operators were introduced. We study solutions of the Hamiltonian system and their projections into the underlying manifold. The explicit formulae were found for a specific example of a semi-Riemannian manifold with nonholonomic constraints.
Several Riemannian metrics and families of Riemannian metrics were defined on the manifold of Symmetric Positive Definite (SPD) matrices. Firstly, we formalize a common general process to define families of metrics: the principle of deformed metrics. We relate the recently introduced family of alpha-Procrustes metrics to the general class of mean kernel metrics by providing a sufficient condition under which elements of the former belongs to the latter. Secondly, we focus on the principle of balanced bilinear forms that we recently introduced. We give a new sufficient condition under which the…
The aim of this paper is to show that holonomy properties of Finsler manifolds can be very different from those of Riemannian manifolds. We prove that the holonomy group of a positive definite non-Riemannian Finsler manifold of non-zero constant curvature with dimension >2 cannot be a compact Lie group. Hence this holonomy group does not occur as the holonomy group of any Riemannian manifold. In addition, we provide an example of left invariant Finsler metric on the Heisenberg group, so that its holonomy group is not a (finite dimensional) Lie group. These results give a positive answer to the…
It was shown by Seaman that if a compact, oriented 4-dimensional riemannian manifold (M, g) of positive sectional curvature admits a harmonic 2-form of constant length, its intersection form is definite and such a harmonic form is unique up to constant multiples. In this paper, we show that such a manifold is diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{CP}_{2}$ with a slightly weaker curvature hypothesis and there is an infinite dimensional moduli space of such metrics near the Fubini-Study metric on $\mathbb{CP}_{2}$. We discuss some of conditions which can be added in order to get the Fubini-Study metric up t…
Fix a number $g>1$, let $S$ be a close surface of genus $g$, and $Teich(S)$ be the Teichmüller space of $S$ endowed with the Weil-Petersson metric. In this paper we show that the Riemannian sectional curvature operator of $Teich(S)$ is non-positive definite. As an application we show that any twist harmonic map from rank-one hyperbolic spaces $H_{Q,m}=Sp(m,1)/Sp(m)\cdot Sp(1)$ or $H_{O,2}=F_{4}^{-20}/SO(9)$ into $Teich(S)$ is a constant.
We give examples illustrating the fact that the different space/time splittings of the tangent bundle of a semi-Riemannian spin manifold give rise to non-equivalent norms on the space of compactly supported sections of the spinor bundle, and as a result, to different completions. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for two space/time splittings to define equivalent norms in terms of a generalized Doppler shift between maximal negative definite subspaces. We explore some consequences for the Noncommutative Geometry program.
A family of probability distributions parametrized by an open domain $Λ$ in $R^n$ defines the Fisher information matrix on this domain which is positive semi-definite. In information geometry the standard assumption has been that the Fisher information matrix tensor is positive definite defining in this way a Riemannian metric on $Λ$. If we replace the "positive definite" assumption by the existence of a suitable torsion-free connection, a foliation with a transversely Hessian structure appears naturally. In the paper we develop the study of transversely Hessian foliations in view of applicati…

We study a functional on the boundary of a compact Riemannian 3-manifold of nonnegative scalar curvature. The functional arises as the second variation of the Wang-Yau quasi-local energy in general relativity. We prove that the functional is positive definite on large coordinate spheres, and more general on nearly round surfaces including large constant mean curvature spheres in asymptotically flat 3-manifolds with positive mass; it is also positive definite on small geodesics spheres, whose centers do not have vanishing curvature, in Riemannian 3-manifolds of nonnegative scalar curvature. We …
We study a Riemannian metric on the cone of symmetric positive-definite matrices obtained from the Hessian of the power potential function $(1-\det(X)^β)/β$. We give explicit expressions for the geodesics and distance function, under suitable conditions. In the scalar case, the geodesic between two positive numbers coincides with a weighted power mean, while for matrices of size at least two it yields a notion of weighted power mean different from the ones given in the literature. As $β$ tends to zero, the power potential converges to the logarithmic potential, that yields a well-known metric …
We prove that if a compact Riemannian 4-manifold with positive sectional curvature satisfies a Kato type inequality, then it is definite. We also discuss some new insights for compact Riemannian 4-manifolds of positive sectional curvature.
