This paper analyzes a time-stepping discontinuous Galerkin method for fractional diffusion-wave problems. This method uses piecewise constant functions in the temporal discretization and continuous piecewise linear functions in the spatial discretization. Nearly optimal convergence rate with respect to the regularity of the solution is established when the source term is nonsmooth, and nearly optimal convergence rate $ \ln(1/τ)(\sqrt{\ln(1/h)} h^2+τ)$ is derived under appropriate regularity assumption on the source term. Convergence is also established without smoothness assumption on the initial value. Finally, numerical experiments are performed to verify the theoretical results.
We devise and analyze a class of interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin methods for nonlinear and nonsmooth variational problems. Discrete duality relations are derived that lead to optimal error estimates in the case of total-variation regularized minimization or obstacle problems. The analysis provides explicit estimates that precisely determine the role of stabilization parameters. Numerical experiments suppport the optimality of the estimates.
This paper is devoted to the numerical analysis of a piecewise constant discontinuous Galerkin method for time fractional subdiffusion problems. The regularity of weak solution is firstly established by using variational approach and Mittag-Leffler function. Then several optimal error estimates are derived with low regularity data. Finally, numerical experiments are conducted to verify the theoretical results.
The discontinuous Galerkin dG method provides a robust and flexible technique for the time integration of fractional diffusion problems. However, a practical implementation uses coefficients defined by integrals that are not easily evaluated. We describe specialised quadrature techniques that efficiently maintain the overall accuracy of the dG method. In addition, we observe in numerical experiments that known superconvergence properties of dG time stepping for classical diffusion problems carry over in a modified form to the fractional-order setting.
The discontinuous Galerkin (DG) time-stepping method applied to abstract evolution equation of parabolic type is studied using a variational approach. We establish the inf-sup condition or Babuška--Brezzi condition for the DG bilinear form. Then, a nearly best approximation property and a nearly symmetric error estimate are obtained as corollaries. Moreover, the optimal order error estimates under appropriate regularity assumption on the solution are derived as direct applications of the standard interpolation error estimates. Our method of analysis is new for the DG time-stepping method; it d…
We investigate the error of the (semidiscrete) Galerkin method applied to a semilinear subdiffusion equation in the presence of a nonsmooth initial data. The diffusion coefficient is allowed to depend on time. It is well-known that in such parabolic problems the spatial error increases when time decreases. The rate of this time-dependency is a function of the fractional parameter and the regularity of the initial condition. We use the energy method to find optimal bounds on the error under weak and natural assumptions on the diffusivity. First, we prove the result for the linear problem and th…

We propose an Eulerian-Lagrangian (EL) Runge-Kutta (RK) discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for wave equations. The method is designed based on the ELDG method for transport problems [J. Comput. Phy. 446: 110632, 2021.], which tracks solution along approximations to characteristics in the DG framework, allowing extra large time stepping sizes with stability. The wave equation can be written as a first order hyperbolic system. Considering each characteristic family, a straightforward application of ELDG will be to transform to the characteristic variables, evolve them on associated characteristi…
We consider the time discretization of a linear parabolic problem by the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method using piecewise polynomials of degree at most $r-1$ in $t$, for $r\ge1$ and with maximum step size~$k$. It is well known that the spatial $L_2$-norm of the DG error is of optimal order $k^r$ globally in time, and is, for $r\ge2$, superconvergent of order $k^{2r-1}$ at the nodes. We show that on the $n$th subinterval $(t_{n-1},t_n)$, the dominant term in the DG error is proportional to the local right Radau polynomial of degree $r$. This error profile implies that the DG error is of order…
We extend and analyze the energy-based discontinuous Galerkin method for second order wave equations on staggered and structured meshes. By combining spatial staggering with local time-stepping near boundaries, the method overcomes the typical numerical stiffness associated with high order piecewise polynomial approximations. In one space dimension with periodic boundary conditions and suitably chosen numerical fluxes, we prove bounds on the spatial operators that establish stability for CFL numbers $c \frac {Δt}{h} < C$ independent of order when stability-enhanced explicit time-stepping schem…

This article concerns second-order time discretization of subdiffusion equations with time-dependent diffusion coefficients. High-order differentiability and regularity estimates are established for subdiffusion equations with time-dependent coefficients. Using these regularity results and a perturbation argument of freezing the diffusion coefficient, we prove that the convolution quadrature generated by the second-order backward differentiation formula, with proper correction at the first time step, can achieve second-order convergence for both nonsmooth initial data and incompatible source t…
We present a strongly conservative and pressure-robust hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for the coupled time-dependent Navier-Stokes and Darcy problem. We show existence and uniqueness of a solution and present an optimal a priori error analysis for the fully discrete problem when using Backward Euler time stepping. The theoretical results are verified by numerical examples.
We consider the periodic initial-value problem for the Korteweg-de Vries equation that we discretize in space by a spectral Fourier-Galerkin method and in time by an implicit, high order, Runge-Kutta scheme of composition type based on the implicit midpoint rule. We prove $L^{2}$ error estimates for the resulting semidiscrete and the fully discrete approximations.
We introduce a new class of Runge-Kutta type methods suitable for time stepping to propagate hyperbolic solutions within tent-shaped spacetime regions. Unlike standard Runge-Kutta methods, the new methods yield expected convergence properties when standard high order spatial (discontinuous Galerkin) discretizations are used. After presenting a derivation of nonstandard order conditions for these methods, we show numerical examples of nonlinear hyperbolic systems to demonstrate the optimal convergence rates. We also report on the discrete stability properties of these methods applied to linear …
This work is concerned with the development of an adaptive numerical method for semilinear heat flow models featuring a general (possibly) nonlinear reaction term that may cause the solution to blow up in finite time. The fully discrete scheme consists of a high order discontinuous Galerkin (dG) time stepping method and a conforming finite element discretisation (cG) in space. The proposed adaptive procedure is based on rigorously devised conditional a posteriori error bounds in the $L^{\infty}(L^{\infty})$ norm. Numerical experiments complement the theoretical results.
Singular source terms in sub-diffusion equations may lead to the unboundedness of solutions, which will bring a severe reduction of convergence order of existing time-stepping schemes. In this work, we propose two efficient time-stepping schemes for solving sub-diffusion equations with a class of source terms mildly singular in time. One discretization is based on the Gr{ü}nwald-Letnikov and backward Euler methods. First-order error estimate with respect to time is rigorously established for singular source terms and nonsmooth initial data. The other scheme derived from the second-order backwa…
We propose a state redistribution method for high order discontinuous Galerkin methods on curvilinear embedded boundary grids. State redistribution relaxes the overly restrictive CFL condition that results from arbitrarily small cut cells and explicit time stepping. Thus, the scheme can take time steps that are proportional to the size of cells in the background grid. The discontinuous Galerkin scheme is stabilized by postprocessing the numerical solution after each stage or step of an explicit time stepping method. This is done by temporarily merging the small cells into larger, possibly over…

The aim of this paper is to study the time stepping scheme for approximately solving the subdiffusion equation with a weakly singular source term. In this case, many popular time stepping schemes, including the correction of high-order BDF methods, may lose their high-order accuracy. To fill in this gap, in this paper, we develop a novel time stepping scheme, where the source term is regularized by using a $k$-fold integral-derivative and the equation is discretized by using a modified BDF2 convolution quadrature. We prove that the proposed time stepping scheme is second-order, even if the sou…
Variational formulations of time-dependent PDEs in space and time yield $(d+1)$-dimensional problems to be solved numerically. This increases the number of unknowns as well as the storage amount. On the other hand, this approach enables adaptivity in space and time as well as model reduction w.r.t. both type of variables. In this paper, we show that matrix oriented techniques can significantly reduce the computational timings for solving the arising linear systems outperforming both time-stepping schemes and other solvers.
We propose a generalized Eulerian-Lagrangian (GEL) discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method. The method is a generalization of the Eulerian-Lagrangian (EL) DG method for transport problems proposed in [arXiv preprint arXiv: 2002.02930 (2020)], which tracks solution along approximations to characteristics in the DG framework, allowing extra large time stepping size with stability. The newly proposed GEL DG method in this paper is motivated for solving linear hyperbolic systems with variable coefficients, where the velocity field for adjoint problems of the test functions is frozen to constant. In thi…
We derive optimal $L^2$-error estimates for semilinear time-fractional subdiffusion problems involving Caputo derivatives in time of order $α\in (0,1)$, for cases with smooth and nonsmooth initial data. A general framework is introduced allowing a unified error analysis of Galerkin type space approximation methods. The analysis is based on a semigroup type approach and exploits the properties of the inverse of the associated elliptic operator. Completely discrete schemes are analyzed in the same framework using a backward Euler convolution quadrature method in time. Numerical examples includin…
A framework is presented to design multirate time stepping algorithms for two dissipative models with coupling across a physical interface. The coupling takes the form of boundary conditions imposed on the interface, relating the solution variables for both models to each other. The multirate aspect arises when numerical time integration is performed with different time step sizes for the component models. In this paper, we seek to identify a unified approach to develop multirate algorithms for these coupled problems. This effort is pursued though the use of discontinuous-Galerkin time steppin…
