This work is concerned with the development of an adaptive numerical method for semilinear heat flow models featuring a general (possibly) nonlinear reaction term that may cause the solution to blow up in finite time. The fully discrete scheme consists of a high order discontinuous Galerkin (dG) time stepping method and a conforming finite element discretisation (cG) in space. The proposed adaptive procedure is based on rigorously devised conditional a posteriori error bounds in the $L^{\infty}(L^{\infty})$ norm. Numerical experiments complement the theoretical results.
The aim of this paper is to develop and analyze high-order time stepping schemes for solving semilinear subdiffusion equations. We apply the $k$-step BDF convolution quadrature to discretize the time-fractional derivative with order $α\in (0,1)$, and modify the starting steps in order to achieve optimal convergence rate. This method has already been well-studied for the linear fractional evolution equations in Jin, Li and Zhou \cite{JinLiZhou:correction}, while the numerical analysis for the nonlinear problem is still missing in the literature. By splitting the nonlinear potential term into an…
We devise and analyze a reliable and efficient a posteriori error estimator for a semilinear control-constrained optimal control problem in two and three dimensional Lipschitz, but not necessarily convex, polytopal domains. We consider a fully discrete scheme that discretizes the state and adjoint equations with piecewise linear functions and the control variable with piecewise constant functions. The devised error estimator can be decomposed as the sum of three contributions which are associated to the discretization of the state and adjoint equations and the control variable. We extend our r…
Time-fractional parabolic equations with a Caputo time derivative are considered. For such equations, we explore and further develop the new methodology of the a-posteriori error estimation and adaptive time stepping proposed in [7]. We improve the earlier time stepping algorithm based on this theory, and specifically address its stable and efficient implementation in the context of high-order methods. The considered methods include an L1-2 method and continuous collocation methods of arbitrary order, for which adaptive temporal meshes are shown to yield optimal convergence rates in the presen…
In this note we examine the a priori and a posteriori analysis of discontinuous Galerkin finite element discretisations of semilinear elliptic PDEs with polynomial nonlinearity. We show that optimal a priori error bounds in the energy norm are only possible for low order elements using classical a priori error analysis techniques. We make use of appropriate quasinorms that results in optimal energy norm error control. We show that, contrary to the a priori case, a standard a posteriori analysis yields optimal upper bounds and does not require the introduction of quasinorms. We also summarise e…
Adaptive asynchronous time-stepping, stopping criteria, and a posteriori error estimates for fixed-stress iterative schemes for coupled poromechanics problems
The Morley finite element method (FEM) is attractive for semilinear problems with the biharmonic operator as a leading term in the stream function vorticity formulation of 2D Navier-Stokes problem and in the von Kármán equations. This paper establishes a best-approximation a~priori error analysis and an a~posteriori error analysis of discrete solutions close to an arbitrary regular solution on the continuous level to semilinear problems with a trilinear nonlinearity. The analysis avoids any smallness assumptions on the data and so has to provide discrete stability by a perturbation analysis be…

In the recent article [Kopteva, N., Numer. Math., 137, 607--642 (2017)] the author obtained residual-type a posteriori error estimates in the energy norm for singularly perturbed semilinear reaction-diffusion equations on anisotropic triangulations. The error constants in these estimates are independent of the diameters and the aspect ratios of mesh elements and of the small perturbation parameter. The purpose of this note is to improve the weights in the jump residual part of the estimator. This is attained by using a novel sharper version of the scaled trace theorem for anisotropic elements,…
We introduce a symmetric fractional-order reduction (SFOR) method to construct numerical algorithms on general nonuniform temporal meshes for semilinear fractional diffusion-wave equations. By using the novel order reduction method, the governing problem is transformed to an equivalent coupled system, where the explicit orders of time-fractional derivatives involved are all $α/2$ $(1<α<2)$. The linearized L1 scheme and Alikhanov scheme are then proposed on general time meshes. Under some reasonable regularity assumptions and weak restrictions on meshes, the optimal convergence is derived for t…
Lower-order $P_2$ finite elements are popular for solving fourth-order elliptic PDEs when the solution has limited regularity. A priori and a posteriori error estimates for von Karman equations are considered in Carstensen et al. (2019, 2020) with respect to different mesh dependent norms which involve different jump and penalization terms. This paper addresses the question, whether they are comparable with respect to a common norm. This article establishes that the errors for the quadratic symmetric interior discontinuous Galerkin, $C^0$ interior penalty and nonconforming Morley finite elemen…
The numerical approximation of the semilinear Klein--Gordon equation in the $d$-dimensional space, with $d=1,2,3$, is studied by analyzing the consistency errors in approximating the solution. By discovering and utilizing a new cancellation structure in the semilinear Klein--Gordon equation, a low-regularity correction of the Lie splitting method is constructed, which can have second-order convergence in the energy space under the regularity condition $(u,\partial_tu)\in L^\infty(0,T;H^{1+\frac{d}{4}}\times H^{\frac{d}{4}})$, where $d=1,2,3$ denotes the dimension of space. In one dimension, th…
We consider fully discrete time-space approximations of abstract linear parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) consisting of an $hp$-version discontinuous Galerkin (DG) time stepping scheme in conjunction with standard (conforming) Galerkin discretizations in space. We derive abstract computable a posteriori error bounds resulting, for instance, in concrete bounds in $L_{\infty}(I;L_2(Ω))$- and $L_{2}(I;H^{1}(Ω))$-type norms when $I$ is the temporal and $Ω$ the spatial domain for the PDE. We base our methodology for the analysis on a novel space-time reconstruction approach. Our appro…
We present a novel energy-based numerical analysis of semilinear diffusion-reaction boundary value problems. Based on a suitable variational setting, the proposed computational scheme can be seen as an energy minimisation approach. More specifically, this procedure aims to generate a sequence of numerical approximations, which results from the iterative solution of related (stabilised) linearised discrete problems, and tends to a local minimum of the underlying energy functional. Simultaneously, the finite-dimensional approximation spaces are adaptively refined; this is implemented in terms of…
We consider the time discretization of a linear parabolic problem by the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method using piecewise polynomials of degree at most $r-1$ in $t$, for $r\ge1$ and with maximum step size~$k$. It is well known that the spatial $L_2$-norm of the DG error is of optimal order $k^r$ globally in time, and is, for $r\ge2$, superconvergent of order $k^{2r-1}$ at the nodes. We show that on the $n$th subinterval $(t_{n-1},t_n)$, the dominant term in the DG error is proportional to the local right Radau polynomial of degree $r$. This error profile implies that the DG error is of order…
We consider the dynamics of a parabolic and a hyperbolic equation coupled on a common interface and develop time-stepping schemes that can use different time-step sizes for each of the subproblems. The problem is formulated in a strongly coupled (monolithic) space-time framework. Coupling two different step sizes monolithically gives rise to large algebraic systems of equations where multiple states of the subproblems must be solved at once. For efficiently solving these algebraic systems, we inherit ideas from the partitioned regime and present two decoupling methods, namely a partitioned rel…
The purpose of this paper is to develop a unified a posteriori method for verifying the positivity of solutions of elliptic boundary value problems by assuming neither $H^2$-regularity nor $ L^{\infty} $-error estimation, but only $ H^1_0 $-error estimation. In [J. Comput. Appl. Math, Vol. 370, (2020) 112647], we proposed two approaches to verify the positivity of solutions of several semilinear elliptic boundary value problems. However, some cases require $ L^{\infty} $-error estimation and, therefore, narrow applicability. In this paper, we extend one of the approaches and combine it with a …
In this paper, a nonsmooth semilinear parabolic partial differential equation (PDE) is considered. For a reduced basis (RB) approach, a space-time formulation is used to develop a certified a-posteriori error estimator. This error estimator is adopted to the presence of the discrete empirical interpolation method (DEIM) as approximation technique for the nonsmoothness. The separability of the estimated error into an RB and a DEIM part then guides the development of an adaptive RB-DEIM algorithm, combining both offline phases into one. Numerical experiments show the capabilities of this novel a…
Solving the relativistic magnetohydrodynamics equations with ADER discontinuous Galerkin methods, a posteriori subcell limiting and adaptive mesh refinement
We introduce a very weak space-time variational formulation for the wave equation, prove its well-posedness (even in the case of minimal regularity) and optimal inf-sup stability. Then, we introduce a tensor product-style space-time Petrov-Galerkin discretization with optimal discrete inf-sup stability, obtained by a non-standard definition of the trial space. As a consequence, the numerical approximation error is equal to the residual, which is particularly useful for a posteriori error estimation. For the arising {discrete linear systems} in space and time, we introduce efficient numerical s…
Maximum bound principle (MBP) is an important property for a large class of semilinear parabolic equations, in the sense that the time-dependent solution of the equation with appropriate initial and boundary conditions and nonlinear operator preserves for all time a uniform pointwise bound in absolute value. It has been a challenging problem on how to design unconditionally MBP-preserving high-order accurate time-stepping schemes for these equations. In this paper, we combine the integrating factor Runge-Kutta (IFRK) method with the linear stabilization technique to develop a stabilized IFRK (…
