This paper is a survey aimed on the introduction of non-Abelian Hodge theory that gives the correspondence between flat bundles and Higgs bundles. We will also introduce some topics arising from this theory, especially some recent developments on the study of the relevant moduli spaces together with some interesting open problems.

In this paper we study Hodge classes on complex abelian varieties. We prove some general results that allow us, in certain cases, to compute the Hodge group of a product abelian variety $X = X_1 \times X_2$ once we know the Hodge groups of the two factors. Using these results we can compute the Hodge groups of all abelian varieties of dimension $\leq 5$. We prove that the Hodge ring of any such abelian variety $X$ is generated by divisor classes together with the so-called Weil classes on (quotients of) $X$.

Let G be a reductive group over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. Let C be a smooth projective curve over k. We give a description of the moduli space of flat G-bundles in terms of the moduli space of G-Higgs bundles over the Frobenius twist C' of C. This description can be regarded as the non-abelian Hodge theory for curves in positive characteristic.
We determine which codimension two Hodge classes on $J\times J$, where $J$ is a general abelian surface, deform to Hodge classes on a family of abelian fourfolds of Weil type. If a Hodge class deforms, there is in general a unique such family. In this paper the authors consider a certain toroidal compactification of the moduli space of degenerations of (1,p)-polarized abelian surfaces with (canonical) level structure. Using Hodge theory we give a proof that a degenerate abelian surface associated to a corank 1 boundary point is (almost) completely determined by the boundary point.
