This paper is concerned with the inverse scattering and the transmission eigenvalues for anisotropic periodic layers. For the inverse scattering problem, we study the Factorization method for shape reconstruction of the periodic layers from near field scattering data. This method provides a fast numerical algorithm as well as a unique determination for the shape reconstruction of the scatterer. We present a rigorous justification and numerical examples for the factorization method. The transmission eigenvalue problem in scattering have recently attracted a lot of attentions. Transmission eigenvalues can be determined from scattering data and they can provide information about the material parameters of the scatterers. In this paper we formulate the interior transmission eigenvalue problem and prove the existence of infinitely many transmission eigenvalues for the scattering from anisotropic periodic layers.
The paper is devoted to the study of some properties of the first eigenvalue of the anisotropic $p$-Laplace operator with Robin boundary condition involving a function $β$ which in general is not constant. In particular we obtain sharp lower bounds in terms of the measure of the domain and we prove a monotonicity property of the eigenvalue with respect the set inclusion.
In this paper we study the main properties of the first eigenvalue and its eigenfunctions of a class of highly nonlinear elliptic operators in a bounded Lipschitz domain, assuming a Robin boundary condition. Moreover, we prove a Faber-Krahn inequality.
We prove a sharp upper bound for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of a class of nonlinear elliptic operators which includes the p-Laplace and the pseudo-p-Laplace operators. Moreover, we prove a stability result by means of a suitable isoperimetric deficity. Finally, we give a sharp lower bound for the anisotropic p-torsional rigidity.
We study an eigenvalue problem involving a fully anisotropic elliptic differential operator in arbitrary Orlicz-Sobolev spaces. The relevant equations are associated with constrained minimization problems for integral functionals depending on the gradient of competing functions through general anisotropic $N$-functions. In particular, the latter need neither be radial, nor have a polynomial growth, and are not even assumed to satisfy the so called $Δ_2$-condition. The resulting analysis requires the development of some new aspects of the theory of anisotropic Orlicz-Sobolev spaces.
In this paper, we investigate the interior transmission eigenvalue problem for an inhomogeneous media with conductive boundary conditions. We prove the discreteness and existence of the transmission eigenvalues. We also investigate the inverse spectral problem of gaining information about the material properties from the transmission eigenvalues. In particular, we prove that the first transmission eigenvalue is a monotonic function of the refractive index and boundary conductivity parameter eta, and obtain a uniqueness result for constant coefficients. We provide some numerical examples to dem…
Given a set of transmission eigenvalues, we describe the connection of such a set to the indicator functions in entire function theory. The indicator functions control the asymptotic growth rate of the solution of the Sturm-Liouville problem which has an uniqueness in the inverse spectral theory. Henceforth, the set of transmission eigenvalues has an inverse spectral property.
In this paper we give results on the counting function associated with the interior transmission eigenvalues. For a complex refraction index we estimate of the counting function by Ctn. In the case where the refraction index is positive we give an equivalent of the counting function.
In this paper, we provide an analytical study of the transmission eigenvalue problem with two conductivity parameters. We will assume that the underlying physical model is given by the scattering of a plane wave for an isotropic scatterer. In previous studies, this eigenvalue problem was analyzed with one conductive boundary parameter whereas we will consider the case of two parameters. We will prove the existence and discreteness of the transmission eigenvalues as well as study the dependence on the physical parameters. We are able to prove monotonicity of the first transmission eigenvalue wi…
We show that the interior transmission eigenvalues are discrete by proving that the interior transmission operator has upper triangular compact resolvent, and that the spectrum of these operators share many of the properties of operators with compact resolvent. In particular, the spectrum is discrete and the generalized eigenspaces are finite dimensional. Our main hypothesis is a coercivity condition on the contrast that must hold only in a neighborhood of the boundary.
We provide a new analytical and computational study of the transmission eigenvalues with a conductive boundary condition. These eigenvalues are derived from the scalar inverse scattering problem for an inhomogeneous material with a conductive boundary condition. The goal is to study how these eigenvalues depend on the material parameters in order to estimate the refractive index. The analytical questions we study are: deriving Faber-Krahn type lower bounds, the discreteness and limiting behavior of the transmission eigenvalues as the conductivity tends to infinity for a sign changing contrast.…
In this paper we consider the transmission eigenvalue problem for Maxwell's equations corresponding to non-magnetic inhomogeneities with contrast in electric permittivity that has fixed sign (only) in a neighborhood of the boundary. We study this problem in the framework of semiclassical analysis and relate the transmission eigenvalues to the spectrum of a Hilbert-Schmidt operator. Under the additional assumption that the contrast is constant in a neighborhood of the boundary, we prove that the set of transmission eigenvalues is discrete, infinite and without finite accumulation points. A noti…
We consider the transmission eigenvalue problem for an impenetrable obstacle with Dirichlet boundary condition surrounded by a thin layer of non-absorbing inhomogeneous material. We derive a rigorous asymptotic expansion for the first transmission eigenvalue with respect to the thickness of the thin layer. Our convergence analysis is based on a Max-Min principle and an iterative approach which involves estimates on the corresponding eigenfunctions. We provide explicit expressions for the terms in the asymptotic expansion up to order three.
We consider non-scattering energies and transmission eigenvalues of compactly supported potentials in the hyperbolic spaces $\mathbb H^n$. We prove that in $\mathbb H^2$ a corner bounded by two hyperbolic lines intersecting at an angle smaller than $180^\circ$ always scatters, and that one of the lines may be replaced by a horocycle. In higher dimensions, we obtain similar results for corners bounded by hyperbolic hyperplanes intersecting each other pairwise orthogonally, and that one of the hyperplanes may be replaced by a horosphere. The corner scattering results are contrasted by proving di…
The transmission eigenvalue problem is a system of two second-order elliptic equations of two unknowns equipped with the Cauchy data on the boundary. In this work, we establish the Weyl law for the eigenvalues and the completeness of the generalized eigenfunctions for a system without complementing conditions, i.e., the two equations of the system have the same coefficients for the second order terms, and thus being degenerate. These coefficients are allowed to be anisotropic and are assumed to be of class $C^2$. One of the keys of the analysis is to establish the well-posedness and the regula…
The spectrum of the interior transmission problem is related to the unique determination of the acoustic properties of a body in thermoacoustic imaging. Under a non-trapping hypothesis, we show that sparsity of the interior transmission spectrum implies a range separation condition for the thermoacoustic operator. In odd dimension greater than or equal to three, we prove that the transmission spectrum for a pair of radially symmetric non-trapping sound speeds is countable, and conclude that the ranges of the associated thermoacoustic maps have only trivial intersection.
Given a set of transmission eigenvalues, its density function inversely determines the form of the indicator function. This is one application of the Cartwright's theory in inverse problems. We use the indicator function inversely to determine the form of the functional determinant d(z). Such an asymptotic expansion is uniquely determined while considered in constant absorbing medium.
A recent problem of interest in inverse problems has been the study of eigenvalue problems arising from scattering theory and their potential use as target signatures in nondestructive testing of materials. Towards this pursuit we introduce a new eigenvalue problem related to Maxwell's equations that is generated from a comparison of measured scattering data to that of a non-standard auxiliary scattering problem. This choice of auxiliary problem permits the application of regularity results for Maxwell's equations in order to show that a related interior transmission problem possesses the Fred…
We study an inverse uniqueness with a knowledge of spectral data in the interior transmission problem defined by an index of refraction in a simple domain. We expand the solution in such a domain into a series of one dimensional problems. For each one dimensional problem, we apply a value distribution theory in complex analysis to describe the eigenvalues of the system. By the orthogonality of the one dimensional system, we consider the uniqueness on the perturbation along each given incident angle.
The transmission problem is a system of two second-order elliptic equations of two unknowns equipped with the Cauchy data on the boundary. After four decades of research motivated by scattering theory, the spectral properties of this problem are now known to depend on a type of contrast between coefficients near the boundary. Previously, we established the discreteness of eigenvalues for a large class of anisotropic coefficients which is related to the celebrated complementing conditions due to Agmon, Douglis, and Nirenberg. In this work, we establish the Weyl law for the eigenvalues and the c…
Cakoni and Nguyen recently proposed very general conditions on the coefficients of Maxwell equations for which they established the discreteness of the set of eigenvalues of the transmission problem and studied their locations. In this paper, we establish the completeness of the generalized eigenfunctions and derive an optimal upper bound for the counting function under these conditions, assuming additionally that the coefficients are twice continuously differentiable. The approach is based on the spectral theory of Hilbert-Schmidt operators.
We obtain well-posedness results in $L_p$-based weighted Sobolev spaces for a transmission problem for anisotropic Stokes and Navier-Stokes systems with $L_{\infty}$ strongly elliptic coefficient tensor, in complementary Lipschitz domains of ${\mathbb R}^n$, $n\ge 3$. The strong ellipticity allows to explore the associated pseudostress setting. First, we use a variational approach that reduces two linear transmission problems for the anisotropic Stokes system to equivalent mixed variational formulations with data in $L_p$-based weighted Sobolev and Besov spaces. We show that such a mixed varia…
We are interested in the problem of retrieving information on the refractive index $n$ of a penetrable inclusion embedded in a reference medium from farfield data associated with incident plane waves. Our approach relies on the use of transmission eigenvalues (TEs) that carry information on $n$ and that can be determined from the knowledge of the farfield operator $F$. In this note, we explain how to modify $F$ into a farfield operator $F^{art}=F-\tilde{F}$, where $\tilde{F}$ is computed numerically, corresponding to well chosen artificial background and for which the associated TEs provide mo…
In this paper, we prove a sharp lower bound of the first (nonzero) eigenvalue of Finsler-Laplacian with the Neumann boundary condition. Equivalently, we prove an optimal anisotropic Poincaré inequality for convex domains, which generalizes the result of Payne-Weinberger. A lower bound of the first (nonzero) eigenvalue of Finsler-Laplacian with the Dirichlet boundary condition is also proved.
The (interior) transmission eigenvalue problems are a type of non-elliptic, non-selfadjoint and nonlinear spectral problems that arise in the theory of wave scattering. They connect to the direct and inverse scattering problems in many aspects in a delicate way. The properties of the transmission eigenvalues have been extensively and intensively studied over the years, whereas the intrinsic properties of the transmission eigenfunctions are much less studied. Recently, in a series of papers, several intriguing local and global geometric structures of the transmission eigenfunctions are discover…
In this paper we prove some results on interior transmission eigenvalues. First, under rea- sonable assumptions, we prove that the spectrum is a discrete countable set and the generalized eigenfunctions spanned a dense space in the range of resolvent. This is a consequence of spectral theory of Hilbert-Schmidt operators. The main ingredient is to prove a smoothing property of resolvent. This allows to prove that a power of the resolvent is Hilbert-Schmidt. We obtain an estimate of the number of eigenvalues, counting with multiplicities, with modulus less than t2 when t is large. We prove also …
This paper is build around the stationary anisotropic Stokes and Navier-Stokes systems with an $L^\infty$-tensor coefficient satisfying an ellipticity condition in terms of symmetric matrices in ${\mathbb R}^{n\times n}$ with zero matrix traces. We analyze, in $L^2$-based Sobolev spaces, the non-homogeneous boundary value problems of Dirichlet-transmission type for the anisotropic Stokes and Navier-Stokes systems in a compressible framework in a bounded Lipschitz domain with a Lipschitz interface in ${\mathbb R}^n$, $n\ge 2$ ($n=2,3$ for the nonlinear problems). The transversal interface inter…
This paper is devoted to the discreteness of the transmission eigenvalue problems. It is known that this problem is not self-adjoint and a priori estimates are non-standard and do not hold in general. Two approaches are used. The first one is based on the multiplier technique and the second one is based on the Fourier analysis. The key point of the analysis is to establish the compactness and the uniqueness for Cauchy problems under various conditions. Using these approaches, we are able to rediscover quite a few known discreteness results in the literature and obtain various new results for w…
We prove Weyl type of asymptotic formulas for the real and the complex internal transmission eigenvalues when the domain is a ball and the index of refraction is constant.
A discrete analog is considered for the inverse transmission eigenvalue problem, having applications in acoustics. We provide a well-posed inverse problem statement, develop a constructive procedure for solving this problem, prove uniqueness of solution, global solvability, local solvability, and stability. Our approach is based on the reduction of the discrete transmission eigenvalue problem to a linear system with polynomials of the spectral parameter in the boundary condition.
We study the location of the transmission eigenvalues in the isotropic case when the restrictions of the refraction indices on the boundary coincide. Under some natural conditions we show that there exist parabolic transmission eigenvalue-free regions.
In this paper we consider the transmission eigenvalue problem for Maxwell's equations corresponding to non-magnetic inhomogeneities with contrast in electric permittivity that changes sign inside its support. We formulate the transmission eigenvalue problem as an equivalent homogeneous system of boundary integral equation, and assuming that the contrast is constant near the boundary of the support of the inhomogeneity, we prove that the operator associated with this system is Fredholm of index zero and depends analytically on the wave number. Then we show the existence of wave numbers that are…
We study a weighted eigenvalue problem with anisotropic diffusion in bounded Lipschitz domains $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{N} $, $N\ge1$, under Robin boundary conditions, proving the existence of two positive eigenvalues $λ^{\pm}$ respectively associated with a positive and a negative eigenfunction. Next, we analyze the minimization of $λ^{\pm}$ with respect to the sign-changing weight, showing that the optimal eigenvalues $Λ^{\pm}$ are equal and the optimal weights are of bang-bang type, namely piece-wise constant functions, each one taking only two values. As a consequence, the problem is equivale…
In this paper, we employ asymptotic analysis to determine information about small volume defects in a known anisotropic scattering medium from far field scattering data. The location of the defects is reconstructed via the MUSIC algorithm from the range of the multi-static response matrix derived from the asymptotic expansion of the far field pattern in the presence of small defects. Since the same data determines the transmission eigenvalues corre- sponding to the perturbed media, we investigate how the presence of the defects changes the transmission eigenvalues and use this information to r…
For the complex interior transmission eigenvalues (ITE) we study for small $θ> 0$ the counting function $$N(θ, r) = #\{λ\in \C:\: λ\: {\rm is} \: {\rm (ITE)},\: |λ| \leq r, \: 0 \leq \arg λ\leq θ\}.$$ We obtain for fixed $θ> 0$ an upper bound $N(θ, r) \leq C r^{n/2}, \: r \geq r(θ).$
We prove that for strictly concave domains much larger transmission eigenvalue-free regions exist. As a consequence, we get Weyl asymptotics for the total counting function with an almost optimal remainder term.
In this paper, we investigate two transmission eigenvalue problems associated with the scattering of a media with a coated boundary. In recent years, there has been a lot of interest in studying these eigenvalue problems. It can be shown that the eigenvalues can be recovered from the scattering data and hold information about the material properties of the media one wishes to determine. Motivated by recent works we will study the electromagnetic transmission eigenvalue problem and scalar `zero-index' transmission eigenvalue problem for a media with a coated boundary. Existence of infinitely ma…
