This paper is build around the stationary anisotropic Stokes and Navier-Stokes systems with an $L^\infty$-tensor coefficient satisfying an ellipticity condition in terms of symmetric matrices in ${\mathbb R}^{n\times n}$ with zero matrix traces. We analyze, in $L^2$-based Sobolev spaces, the non-homogeneous boundary value problems of Dirichlet-transmission type for the anisotropic Stokes and Navier-Stokes systems in a compressible framework in a bounded Lipschitz domain with a Lipschitz interface in ${\mathbb R}^n$, $n\ge 2$ ($n=2,3$ for the nonlinear problems). The transversal interface intersects the boundary of the Lipschitz domain. First, we use a mixed variational approach to prove well-posedness results for the linear anisotropic Stokes system. Then we show the existence of a weak solution for the nonlinear anisotropic Navier-Stokes system by implementing the Leray-Schauder fixed point theorem and using various results and estimates from the linear case, as well as the Leray-Hopf and some other norm inequalities. Explicit conditions for uniqueness of solutions to the nonlinear problems are also provided.
Let Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n be a bounded domain with C^\infty boundary. We show that a harmonic function in Ωthat is Lipschitz along a family of curves transversal to bΩis Lipschitz in Ω. The space of Lipschitz functions we consider is defined using the notion of a majorant which is a certain generalization of the power functions t^α, 0<α<1.
For linearized Navier-Stokes equations, we consider an inverse source problem of determining a spatially varying divergence-free factor. We prove the global Lipschitz stability by interior data over a time interval and velocity field at $t_0>0$ over the spatial domain. The key are Carleman estimates for the Navier-Stokes equations and the operator rot.
The purpose of this paper is to study boundary value problems of transmission type for the Navier-Stokes and Darcy-Forchheimer-Brinkman systems in two complementary Lipschitz domains on a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension 2 or 3. We exploit a layer potential method combined with a fixed point theorem in order to show existence and uniqueness results when the given data are suitably small in $L^2$-based Sobolev spaces.
We use the scale $B^s_τ(L_τ(Ω))$, $1/τ=s/d+1/2$, $s>0$, to study the regularity of the stationary Stokes equation on bounded Lipschitz domains $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\geq 3$, with connected boundary. The regularity in these Besov spaces determines the order of convergence of nonlinear approximation schemes. Our proofs rely on a combination of weighted Sobolev estimates and wavelet characterizations of Besov spaces. By using Banach's fixed point theorem, we extend this analysis to the stationary Navier-Stokes equation with suitable Reynolds number and data, respectively.
We establish a new local well-posedness result in the space of finite Borel measures for mild solutions of the parabolic-elliptic Patlak-Keller-Segel (PKS) model of chemotactic aggregation in two dimensions. Our result only requires that the initial measure satisfy the necessary assumption $\max_{x \in \Real^2}μ(\set{x}) < 8π$. This work improves the small-data results of Biler and the existence results of Senba and Suzuki. Our work is based on that of Gallagher and Gallay, who prove the uniqueness and log-Lipschitz continuity of the solution map for the 2D Navier-Stokes equations (NSE) with m…
In this paper, we consider the energy conservation of the Leray-Hopf weak solution $u$ to the Navier-Stokes equations on bounded domains $Ω$ with Lipschitz boundary $\partialΩ$. We prove that although the boundary effect appears, the Shinbrot's condition $u\in L^q_{loc}((0,T];L^p(Ω))$ with $\frac{1}{p}+\frac{1}{q}=\frac{1}{2},p\geq 4$ still guarantees the validity of energy conservation of $u$, no boundary layer assumptions are required when dealing with domains with Lipschitz boundary. Compared to the existed methods, our critical strategies are that we first separate the mollification of wea…
We investigate regularity estimates for the stationary Navier-Stokes equations above a highly oscillating Lipschitz boundary with the no-slip boundary condition. Our main result is an improved Lipschitz regularity estimate at scales larger than the boundary layer thickness. We also obtain an improved $C^{1,μ}$ estimate and identify the building blocks of the regularity theory, dubbed `Navier polynomials'. In the case when some structure is assumed on the oscillations of the boundary, for instance periodicity, these estimates can be seen as local error estimates. Although we handle the regulari…
On weak solutions to the 1d compressible Navier-Stokes equations: a Lipschitz continuous dependence on data in weaker norms and an error of their homogenization
We show that the Stokes operator defined on $\mathrm{L}^p_σ (Ω)$ for an exterior Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ $(n \geq 3)$ admits maximal regularity provided that $p$ satisfies $| 1/p - 1/2| < 1/(2n) + \varepsilon$ for some $\varepsilon > 0$. In particular, we prove that the negative of the Stokes operator generates a bounded analytic semigroup on $\mathrm{L}^p_σ(Ω)$ for such $p$. In addition, $\mathrm{L}^p$-$\mathrm{L}^q$-mapping properties of the Stokes semigroup and its gradient with optimal decay estimates are obtained. This enables us to prove the existence of mild solutions t…
This paper presents a new approach to the local well-posedness of the $1d$ compressible Navier-Stokes systems with rough initial data. Our approach is based on establishing some smoothing and Lipschitz-type estimates for the $1d$ parabolic equation with piecewise continuous coefficients.
This paper concerns the tempered pullback dynamics of 2D incompressible non-autonomous Navier-Stokes equation with non-homogeneous boundary condition on Lipschitz-like domain. With the presence of a time-dependent external force f(t) which only needs to be pullback translation bounded, we establish the existence of a minimal pullback attractor with respect to a universe of tempered sets for the corresponding non-autonomous dynamical system. We then give estimate on the finite fractal dimension of the attractor based on trace formula. Under the additional assumption that the external force is t…
On a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, $d \geq 3$, we continue the study of Shen and of Kunstmann and Weis of the Stokes operator on $\mathrm{L}^p_σ (Ω)$. We employ their results in order to determine the domain of the square root of the Stokes operator as the space $\mathrm{W}^{1 , p}_{0 , σ} (Ω)$ for $\lvert \frac{1}{p} - \frac{1}{2} \rvert < \frac{1}{d} + \varepsilon$ and some $\varepsilon > 0$. This characterization provides gradient estimates as well as $\mathrm{L}^p$-$\mathrm{L}^q$-mapping properties of the corresponding semigroup. In the three-dimensional case this provi…
We prove existence of weak solutions for the fully inhomogeneous, stationary generalized Navier-Stokes equations for shear-thinning fluids. Our proof is based on the theory of pseudomonotone operators and the Lipschitz truncation method, whose application is presented as a general result. Our approach requires a smallness and a regularity assumption on the data; we show that this is inevitable in the framework of pseudomonotone operators.
The first aim of this paper is to develop a layer potential theory in $L_2$-based weighted Sobolev spaces on Lipschitz bounded and exterior domains of ${\mathbb R}^n$, $n\geq 3$, for the anisotropic Stokes system with $L_{\infty }$ viscosity coefficient tensor satisfying an ellipticity condition for symmetric matrices. To do this, we explore equivalent mixed variational formulations and prove the well-posedness of some transmission problems for the anisotropic Stokes system in Lipschitz domains of ${\mathbb R}^n$, with the given data in $L_2$-based weighted Sobolev spaces. These results are us…
We prove partial regularity of suitable weak solutions to the Navier--Stokes equations at the boundary in irregular domains. In particular, we provide a criterion which yields continuity of the velocity field in a boundary point and obtain solutions which are continuous in a.a. boundary boundary point (their existence is a consequence of a new maximal regularity result for the Stokes equations in domains with minimal regularity). We suppose that we have a Lipschitz boundary with locally small Lipschitz constant which belongs to the fractional Sobolev space $W^{2-1/p,p}$ for some $p>\frac{15}{4…
In this paper, we investigate the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to 2D incompressible inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with viscous coefficient depending on the density and with initial density being discontinuous across some smooth interface. Compared with the previous results for the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with constant viscosity, the main difficulty here lies in the fact that the $L^1$ in time Lipschitz estimate of the velocity field can not be obtained by energy method (see \cite{DM17,LZ1, LZ2} for instance). Motivated by the key idea of Chemin to s…
The goal of this article is to present -- in a cohesive, and somewhat self-contained fashion -- several recent results revealing an experimentally, numerically, and mathematical analysis-supported \emph{geometric scenario} manifesting \emph{large data} logarithmic \emph{sub-criticality} of the 3D Navier-Stokes regularity problem. Shortly -- in this scenario -- the \emph{transversal small scales} produced by the mechanism of vortex stretching (coupled with the decay of the volume of the regions of intense vorticity) reach the threshold sufficient for the \emph{locally anisotropic diffusion} to …
Euler-Leray data functions of first and second order are defined by first and second order derivatives of the nonlinear spatial part of the incompressible Euler equation operator in Leray projection form applied to Cauchy data. The Lipschitz continuity of these functions for a certain class of strongly regular Cauchy data is sufficient for the existence of global regular upper bounds of incompressible Navier Stokes equation solutions. Global regular upper bounds of global solution branches of the incompressible Euler equation can be obtained for a class of strongly regular Cauchy data, if the …
The goal of the present paper is to study the weak--strong uniqueness problem for the compressible Navier--Stokes system with a general barotropic pressure law. Our results include the case of a hard sphere pressure of Van der Waals type with a non--monotone perturbation and a Lipschitz perturbation of a monotone pressure. Although the main tool is the relative energy inequality, the results are conditioned by the presence of viscosity and do not seem extendable to the Euler system.
This work is concerned with the necessary conditions of optimality for a minimal time control problem $(P)$ for the linearized Navier-Stokes periodic flow in a 2D-channel, subject to a boundary input which acts on the transversal component of the velocity. The objective in this problem is the reaching of the laminar regime in a minimum time, as well as its preservation after this time. The determination of the necessary conditions of optimality relies on the analysis of intermediate minimal time control problems $(P_{k})$ for the Fourier modes $"k"$ associated to the Navier-Stokes equations an…
We study stationary Stokes systems in divergence form with piecewise Dini mean oscillation coefficients and data in a bounded domain containing a finite number of subdomains with $C^{1,\rm{Dini}}$ boundaries. We prove that if $(u, p)$ is a weak solution of the system, then $(Du, p)$ is bounded and piecewise continuous. The corresponding results for stationary Navier-Stokes systems are also established, from which the Lipschitz regularity of the stationary $H^1$-weak solution in dimensions $d=2,3,4$ is obtained.
We consider the homogenization problem of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded three dimensional domain perforated with very tiny holes. As the number of holes increases to infinity, we show that, if the size of the holes is small enough, the homogenized equations are the same as the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the homogeneous domain---domain without holes. This coincides with the previous studies for the Stokes equations and the stationary Navier-Stokes equations. It is the first result of this kind in the instationary barotropic compressible setting. The main tec…
We study steady bifurcation for the coupled system body-liquid consisting of a sphere freely falling in a Navier-Stokes liquid under the action of gravity. In particular we show that, under the assumption that for the bifurcating solution the translational velocity of the sphere is parallel to the gravity, bifurcation takes place provided 1 is a simple eigenvalue of a suitable linear operator and the transversality property holds.
This paper continues our study of the interconnection between controllability and mixing properties of random dynamical systems. We begin with an abstract result showing that the approximate controllability to a point and a local stabilisation property imply the uniqueness of a stationary measure and exponential mixing in the dual-Lipschitz metric. This result is then applied to the 2D Navier-Stokes system driven by a random force acting through the boundary. A by-product of our analysis is the local exponential stabilisation of the boundary-driven Navier-Stokes system by a regular boundary co…
In this paper, we first prove the global existence of weak solutions to the d-dimensional incompressible inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with initial data in critical Besov spaces, which satisfies a non-linear smallness condition. The regularity of the initial velocity is critical to the scaling of this system and is general enough to generate non-Lipschitz velocity field. Furthermore, with additional regularity assumption on the initial velocity or on the initial density, we can also prove the uniqueness of such solution. We should mention that the classical maximal regularity theorem f…
The heat conducting compressible viscous flows are governed by the Navier-Stokes-Fourier (NSF) system. In this paper, we study the NSF system accomplished by the Newton law of cooling for the heat transfer at the boundary. On one part of the boundary, we consider the Navier slip boundary condition, while in the remaining part the inlet and outlet occur. The existence of a weak solution is proved via a new fixed point argument. With this new approach, the weak solvability is possible in Lipschitz domains, by making recourse to \(L^q\)-Neumann problems with \(q>n\).Thus, standard existence resul…
In this work we consider the generalized Navier-Stoke equations with the presence of a damping term in the momentum equation. % The problem studied here derives from the set of equations which govern the isothermal flow of incompressible, homogeneous and non-Newtonian fluids. % For the generalized Navier-Stokes problem with damping, we prove the existence of weak solutions by using regularization techniques, the theory of monotone operators and compactness arguments together with the local decomposition of the pressure and the Lipschitz-truncation method. The existence result proved here holds…
This paper concerns the existence of global weak solutions à la Leray for compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a pressure law that depends on the density and on time and space variables $t$ and $x$. The assumptions on the pressure contain only locally Lipschitz assumption with respect to the density variable and some hypothesis with respect to the extra time and space variables. It may be seen as a first step to consider heat-conducting Navier-Stokes equations with physical laws such as the truncated virial assumption. The paper focuses on the construction of approximate solutions through…
Here we investigate the Cauchy problem for the barotropic Navier-Stokes equations in R^n, in the critical Besov spaces setting. We improve recent results as regards the uniqueness condition: initial velocities in critical Besov spaces with (not too) \emph{negative} indices generate a unique local solution. Apart from (critical) regularity, the initial density just has to be bounded away from 0 and to tend to some positive constant at infinity. Density-dependent viscosity coefficients may be considered. Using Lagrangian coordinates is the key to our statements as it enables us to solve the syst…
We prove short-time well-posedness and existence of global weak solutions of the Beris--Edwards model for nematic liquid crystals in the case of a bounded domain with inhomogeneous mixed Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. The system consists of the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with an evolution equation for the $Q$-tensor. The solutions possess higher regularity in time of order one compared to the class of weak solutions with finite energy. This regularity is enough to obtain Lipschitz continuity of the non-linear terms in the corresponding function spaces. Therefore the well-posed…
This paper is devoted to the maximal $L^1$ regularity and asymptotic behavior for solutions to the inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations under a scaling-invariant smallness assumption on the initial velocity. We obtain a new global $L^1$-in-time estimate for the Lipschitz seminorm of the velocity field without any smallness assumption on the initial density fluctuation. In the derivation of this estimate, we study the maximal $L^1$ regularity for a linear Stokes system with variable coefficients. The analysis tools are a use of the semigroup generated by a generalized Stokes ope…
In this paper we study existence, dependence and optimal control results concerning solutions to a class of hemivariational inequalities for stationary Navier-Stokes equations but without making use of the theory of pseudo-monotone operators. To do so, we consider a classical assumption, due to J. Rauch, which constrains us to make a slight change on the definition of a solution. The Rauch assumption,, although insure the existence of a solution, does not allow the conclusion that the non-convex functional is locally Lipschitz. Moreover, two dependence results are proved, one with respect to c…
We provide existence of very weak solutions and new a-priori estimates for steady flows of non-Newtonian fluids when the right-hand sides are not in the natural existence class. To obtain the a-priori estimates we make use of a newly developed solenoidal Lipschitz truncation that preserves zero boundary values. We provide also estimates in (Muckenhoupt) weighted spaces which permit us to regain a duality pairing. Our estimates are valid even in the presence of the convective term. They are obtained via a newly developed comparison method that allows to "cut out" the singularities of the right …
In this work, we introduce and study the well-posedness of the multidimensional fractional stochastic Navier-Stokes equations on bounded domains and on the torus (Briefly dD-FSNSE). We prove the existence of a martingale solution for the general regime. We establish the uniqueness in the case a martingale solution enjoys a condition of Serrin's type on the fractional Sobolev spaces. If an $L^2-$ local weak (strong in probability) solution exists and enjoys conditions of Beale-Kato-Majda type, this solution is global and unique. These conditions are automatically satisfied for the 2D-FSNSE on t…

We prove the well posedness: global existence, uniqueness and regularity of the solutions, of a class of d-dimensional fractional stochastic active scalar equations. This class includes the stochastic, dD-quasi-geostrophic equation, $ d\geq 1$, fractional Burgers equation on the circle, fractional nonlocal transport equation and the 2D-fractional vorticity Navier-Stokes equation. We consider the multiplicative noise with locally Lipschitz diffusion term in both, the free and no free divergence modes. The random noise is given by an $Q-$Wiener process with the covariance $Q$ being either of fin…
We consider the Stokes resolvent problem in a two-dimensional bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω$ subject to homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. We prove $\mathrm{L}^p$-resolvent estimates for $p$ satisfying the condition $\lvert 1 / p - 1 / 2 \rvert < 1 / 4 + \varepsilon$ for some $\varepsilon > 0$. We further show that the Stokes operator admits the property of maximal regularity and that its $\mathrm{H}^{\infty}$-calculus is bounded. This is then used to characterize domains of fractional powers of the Stokes operator. Finally, we give an application to the regularity theory of weak solutio…
So far existence of dissipative weak solutions for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations (i.e. weak solutions satisfying the relative energy inequality) is known only in the case of boundary conditions with non zero inflow/outflow (i.e., in particular, when the normal component of the velocity on the boundary of the ow domain is equal to zero). Most of physical applications (as ows in wind tunnels, pipes, reactors of jet engines) requires to consider non-zero inflow-outflow boundary condtions. We prove existence of dissipative weak solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in ba…
In this article, we devote to the existence of an $N$-dimensional inertial manifold for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb{T}^{d}$ ($d=2,3$). Our results can be summarized as two aspects: Firstly, we construct an $N$-dimensional inertial manifold for the Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb{T}^{2}$; Secondly, we extend slightly the spatial averaging method to the abstract case: $\partial_{t}u+A^{1+α}u+A^αF(u)=f$ (here $0<α<1$, $A>0$ is a self-adjoint operator with compact inverse and $F$ is Lipschitz from a Hilbert space $\mathbb{H}$ to $\mathbb{H}$), and then verify the exi…
