On weak solutions to the 1d compressible Navier-Stokes equations: a Lipschitz continuous dependence on data in weaker norms and an error of their homogenization
We deal with the global in time weak solutions to the 1D compressible Navier-Stokes system of equations for large discontinuous initial data and nonhomogeneous boundary conditions of three standard types. We prove the Lipschitz-type continuous dependence of the solution $(η,u,θ)$, in a norm slightly stronger than $L^{2,\infty}(Q)\times L^2(Q)\times L^2(Q)$, on the initial data $(η^0,u^0,e^0)$ in a norm of $L^2(Ω)\times H^{-1}(Ω)\times H^{-1}(Ω)$-type and also on the free terms in all the equations in some dual norms. Here $η$, $u$ and $θ$ are the specific volume, velocity and absolute temperature as well as $η^0$, $u^0$ and $e^0$ are the initial specific volume, velocity and specific total energy, and $Q=Ω\times (0,T)$. We also apply this result to the case of discontinuous rapidly oscillating, with the period $\varepsilon$, initial data and free terms and derive an estimate $O(\varepsilon)$ for the difference between the solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations and their Bakhvalov-Eglit two-scale homogenized version with averaged data.
In this paper, we study the homogenization problems for the stationary compressible Navier-Stokes system in a bounded 2D domain, where the domain is perforated with very tiny holes (or obstacles) whose diameters are much smaller than their mutual distances. We obtain that the process of homogenization doesn't change the motion of the fluids. From another point of view, we obtain the same system of equations in the asymptotic limit. It is the first result of homogenization problem in the compressible case in 2 dimensions.
We consider the homogenization problem of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded three dimensional domain perforated with very tiny holes. As the number of holes increases to infinity, we show that, if the size of the holes is small enough, the homogenized equations are the same as the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the homogeneous domain---domain without holes. This coincides with the previous studies for the Stokes equations and the stationary Navier-Stokes equations. It is the first result of this kind in the instationary barotropic compressible setting. The main tec…
We consider the homogenization of the compressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations in a randomly perforated domain in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Assuming that the particle size scales like $\varepsilon^α$, where $\varepsilon>0$ is their mutual distance and $α>3$, we show that in the limit $\varepsilon\to 0$, the velocity, density, and temperature converge to a solution of the same system. We follow the methods of Lu and Pokorný [https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jde.2020.10.032], where they considered the full system in periodically perforated domains.
We study the inverse of the divergence operator on a domain $Ω\subset R^3$ perforated by a system of tiny holes. We show that such inverse can be constructed on the Lebesgue space $L^p(Ω)$ for any $1< p < 3$, with a norm independent of perforation, provided the holes are suitably small and their mutual distance suitably large. Applications are given to problems arising in homogenization of steady compressible fluid flows.
This paper is concerned with boundary regularity estimates in the homogenization of elliptic equations with rapidly oscillating and high-contrast coefficients. We establish uniform nontangential-maximal-function estimates for the Dirichlet, regularity, and Neumann problems with $L^2$ boundary data in a periodically perforated Lipschitz domain.
We analyze behavior of weak solutions to compressible fluid flows in a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^3$, randomly perforated by tiny balls with random size. Assuming the radii of the balls scale like $\varepsilon^α$, $α> 3$, with $\varepsilon$ denoting the average distance between the balls, the problem homogenize with the same limiting equation. Our main contribution is a construction of the Bogovski\uı operator, uniformly in $\varepsilon$, without any assumptions on the minimal distance between the balls.
In this note, we consider the homogenization of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in a periodically perforated domain in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Assuming that the particle size scales like $\varepsilon^3$, where $\varepsilon>0$ is their mutual distance, and that the Mach number decreases fast enough, we show that in the limit $\varepsilon\to 0$, the velocity and density converge to a solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with Brinkman term. We strongly follow the methods of Höfer, Kowalczik and Schwarzacher [arXiv:2007.09031], where they proved convergence to Darcy's law for th…

We consider a nonlocal version of the quasi-static Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations with a non-monotone pressure law. This system governs the low-Reynolds number dynamics of a compressible viscous fluid that may take either a liquid or a vapour state. For a porous domain that is perforated by cavities with diameter proportional to their mutual distance the homogenization limit is analyzed. We extend the results for compressible one-phase flow with polytropic pressure laws and prove that the effective motion is governed by a nonlocal version of the Cahn-Hilliard equation. Crucial for the analys…

We consider the homogenization limit of the compressible barotropic Navier-Stokes equations in a three-dimensional domain perforated by periodically distributed identical particles. We study the regime of particle sizes and distances such that the volume fraction of particles tends to zero but their resistance density tends to infinity. Assuming that the Mach number is increasing with a certain rate, the rescaled velocity and pressure of the microscopic system converges to the solution of an effective equation which is given by Darcy's law. The range of sizes of particles we consider are exact…
We develop a new real-variable method for weighted $L^p$ estimates. The method is applied to the study of weighted $W^{1, 2}$ estimates in Lipschitz domains for weak solutions of second-order elliptic systems in divergence form with bounded measurable coefficients. It produces a necessary and sufficient condition, which depends on the weight function, for the weighted $W^{1,2}$ estimate to hold in a fixed Lipschitz domain with a given weight. Using this condition, for elliptic systems in Lipschitz domains with rapidly oscillating, periodic and VMO coefficients, we reduce the problem of weighte…
The paper deals with homogenization of a model problem describing an immiscible compressible two-phase flow in random statistically homogeneous porous media. We derive the effective (macroscopic) problem and prove the convergence of solutions. Our approach relies on stochastic two-scale convergence techniques, the realization-wise notion of stochastic two-scale convergence being used. Also, we exploit various a priori estimates as well as monotonicity and compactness arguments.

We establish interior Lipschitz estimates at the macroscopic scale for solutions to systems of linear elasticity with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients and mixed boundary conditions in domains periodically perforated at a microscopic scale $\varepsilon$ by establishing $H^1$-convergence rates for such solutions. The interior estimates are derived directly without the use of compactness via an argument presented in [3] that was adapted for elliptic equations in [2] and [11]. As a consequence, we derive a Liouville type estimate for solutions to the systems of linear elasticity in unboun…
The paper extends the results obtained by C. Kenig, F. Lin and Z. Shen in \cite{SZW2} to more general elliptic homogenization problems in two perspectives: lower order terms in the operator and no smoothness on the coefficients. We do not repeat their arguments. Instead we find the new weighted-type estimates for the smoothing operator at scale $\varepsilon$, and combining some techniques developed by Z. Shen in \cite{SZW12} leads to our main results. In addition, we also obtain sharp $O(\varepsilon)$ convergence rates in $L^{p}$ with $p=2d/(d-1)$, which were originally established by Z. Shen …
In a Lipschitz cylinder, this paper is devoted to establish an almost sharp error estimate $O(\varepsilon\log_2(1/\varepsilon))$ in $L^2$-norm for parabolic systems of elasticity with initial-Dirichlet conditions, arising in the homogenization theory. To achieve the goal, with the parabolic distance function being a weight, we first developed some new weighted-type inequalities for the smoothing operator at scale $\varepsilon$ in terms of t-anisotropic Sobolev spaces, and then all the problems may be reduced to three kinds of estimate for the homogenized system, in which a weighted-type Caccio…
We establish uniform Lipschitz estimates for second-order elliptic systems in divergence form with rapidly oscillating, almost-periodic coefficients. We give interior estimates as well as estimates up to the boundary in bounded $C^{1,α}$ domains with either Dirichlet or Neumann data. The main results extend those in the periodic setting due to Avellaneda and Lin for interior and Dirichlet boundary estimates and later Kenig, Lin, and Shen for the Neumann boundary conditions. In contrast to these papers, our arguments are constructive (and thus the constants are in principle computable) and the …
In this paper we study the $L^p$ boundary value problems for $\mathcal{L}(u)=0$ in $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}_+$, where $\mathcal{L}=-\text{div}(A\nabla)$ is a second order elliptic operator with real and symmetric coefficients. Assume that $A$ is {\it periodic} in $x_{d+1}$ and satisfies some minimal smoothness condition in the $x_{d+1}$ variable, we show that the $L^p$ Neumann and regularity problems are uniquely solvable for $1<p<2+δ$. We also present a new proof of Dahlberg's theorem on the $L^p$ Dirichlet problem for $2-δ<p< \infty$ (Dahlberg's original unpublished proof is given in the Appendix).…
A linear system of differential equations describing a joint motion of a thermoelastic porous body with a sufficiently large Lame's constants (absolutelty rigid body) and a thermofluid, occupying porous space, is considered. The rigorous justification, under various conditions imposed on physical parameters, is fulfilled for homogenization procedures as the dimensionless size of the pores tends to zero, while the porous body is geometrically periodic. As the results we derive Darcy's system of filtration for thermofluid, depending on ratios between physical parameters. The proofs are based on …
In the present paper, we generalize the theory of quantitative homogenization for second-order elliptic systems with rapidly oscillating coefficients in $APW^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$, which is the space of almost-periodic functions in the sense of H. Weyl. We obtain the large scale uniform boundary Lipschitz estimate, for both Dirichlet and Neumann problems in $C^{1,α}$ domains. We also obtain large scale uniform boundary Hölder estimates in $C^{1,α}$ domains and $L^2$ Rellich estimates in Lipschitz domains.
We investigate quantitative estimates in periodic homogenization of second-order elliptic systems of elasticity with singular fourth-order perturbations. The convergence rates, which depend on the scale $κ$ that represents the strength of the singular perturbation and on the length scale $ε$ of the heterogeneities, are established. We also obtain the large-scale Lipschitz estimate, down to the scale $ε$ and independent of $κ$. This large-scale estimate, when combined with small-scale estimates, yields the classical Lipschitz estimate that is uniform in both $ε$ and $κ$.
We study the long-time dynamics of two-dimensional linear Fokker-Planck equations driven by a drift that can be decomposed in the sum of a large shear component and the gradient of a regular potential depending on one spatial variable. The problem can be interpreted as that of a passive scalar advected by a slightly compressible shear flow, and undergoing small diffusion. For the corresponding stochastic differential equation, we give explicit homogenization rates in terms of a family of time-scales depending on the parameter measuring the strength of the incompressible perturbation. This is a…
We study the homogenization of stationary compressible Navier--Stokes--Fourier system in a bounded three dimensional domain perforated with a large number of very tiny holes. Under suitable assumptions imposed on the smallness and distribution of the holes, we show that the homogenized limit system remains the same in the domain without holes.
In terms of layer potential methods, this paper is devoted to study the $L^2$ boundary value problems for nonhomogeneous elliptic operators with rapidly oscillating coefficients in a periodic setting. Under a low regularity assumption on the coefficients, we establish the solvability for Dirichlet, regular and Neumann problems in a bounded Lipschitz domain, as well as, the uniform nontangential maximal function estimates and square function estimates. The main difficulty is reflected in two aspects: (i) we can not treat the lower order terms as a compact perturbation to the leading term due to…
Concerned with the Stokes systems with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients, we mainly extend the recent works in \cite{SGZWS,G} to those in term of Lipschitz domains. The arguments employed here are quite different from theirs, and the basic idea comes from \cite{QX2}, originally motivated by \cite{SZW2,SZW12,TS}. We obtain an almost-sharp $O(\varepsilon\ln(r_0/\varepsilon))$ convergence rate in $L^2$ space, and a sharp $O(\varepsilon)$ error estimate in $L^{\frac{2d}{d-1}}$ space by a little stronger assumption. Under the dimensional condition $d=2$, we also establish the optimal $O(\va…
For a family of systems of linear elasticity with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients, we establish sharp boundary estimates with either Dirichlet or Neumann conditions, uniform down to the microscopic scale, without smoothness assumptions on the coefficients. Under additional smoothness conditions, these estimates, combined with the corresponding local estimates, lead to the full Rellich type estimates in Lipschitz domains and Lipschitz estimates in $C^{1, α}$ domains. The $C^α$, $W^{1,p}$, and $L^p$ estimates in $C^1$ domains for systems with VMO coefficients are also studied. The appr…
In this paper we establish periodic homogenization for Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equations, associated to nonlocal operators of integro-differential type. We consider the case when the fractional diffusion has the same order as the drift term, and is weakly elliptic. The outcome of the paper is twofold. One one hand, we provide Lipschitz regularity results for weakly elliptic non-local HJB, extending the results previously obtained in [8]. On the other hand, we establish a convergence result, based on half relaxed limits and a comparison principle for the effective problem. The latter stro…
The paper addresses the homogenization of a family of micro-models for the flow of a slightly compressible fluid in a poroelastic matrix containing periodically distibuted poroelastic inclusions, with low permeabilities and with imperfect contact on the interface. The micro-models are based on Biot's system for consolidation processes in each phase, with interfacial barrier formulation. Using the two-scale convergence technique, it is shown that the derived system is a general model of that proposed by Aifantis, plus an extra memory term.
We consider periodic homogenization of nonlinearly elastic composite materials. Under suitable assumptions on the stored energy function (frame indifference; minimality, non-degeneracy and smoothness at identity; $p\geq d$-growth from below), and on the microgeometry of the composite (covering the case of smooth, periodically distributed inclusions with touching boundaries), we prove that in an open neighbourhood of the set of rotations, the multi-cell homogenization formula of non-convex homogenization reduces to a single-cell formula that can be represented with help of a corrector. This gen…
This paper is concerned with quantitative homogenization of second-order parabolic systems with periodic coefficients varying rapidly in space and time, in different scales. We obtain large-scale interior and boundary Lipschitz estimates as well as interior $C^{1, α}$ and $C^{2, α}$ estimates by utilizing higher-order correctors. We also investigate the problem of convergence rates for initial-boundary value problems.
In this paper, we are interested in the periodic homogenization of quasilinear elliptic equations. We obtain error estimates $O(\varepsilon^{1/2})$ for a $C^{1,1}$ domain, and $O(\varepsilon^σ)$ for a Lipschitz domain, in which $σ\in(0,1/2)$ is close to zero. Based upon the convergence rates, an interior Lipschitz estimate, as well as a boundary Hölder estimate can be developed at large scales without any smoothness assumption, and these will implies reverse Hölder estimates established for a $C^1$ domain. By a real method developed by Z.Shen \cite{S3}, we consequently derive a global $W^{1,p}…
Let $Ω$ be a Lipschitz domain in $\mathbb R^d$, and let $\mathcal A^\varepsilon=-\operatorname{div}A(x,x/\varepsilon)\nabla$ be a strongly elliptic operator on $Ω$. We suppose that $\varepsilon$ is small and the function $A$ is Lipschitz in the first variable and periodic in the second, so the coefficients of $\mathcal A^\varepsilon$ are locally periodic and rapidly oscillate. Given $μ$ in the resolvent set, we are interested in finding the rates of approximations, as $\varepsilon\to0$, for $(\mathcal A^\varepsilon-μ)^{-1}$ and $\nabla(\mathcal A^\varepsilon-μ)^{-1}$ in the operator topology o…
For a family of second-order elliptic systems of Maxwell's type with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients in a $C^{1, α}$ domain $Ω$, we establish uniform estimates of solutions $u_\varep$ and $\nabla \times u_\varep$ in $L^p(Ω)$ for $1<p\le \infty$. The proof relies on the uniform $W^{1,p}$ and Lipschitz estimates for solutions of scalar elliptic equations with periodic coefficients.
We consider the 2-d isentropic compressible Euler equations. It was shown in by E. Chiodaroli, C. De Lellis and O. Kreml that there exist Riemann initial data as well as Lipschitz initial data for which there exist infinitely many weak solutions that fulfill an energy inequality. In this note we will prove that there is Riemann initial data for which there exist infinitely many weak solutions that conserve energy, i.e. they fulfill an energy equality. As in the aforementioned paper we will also show that there even exists Lipschitz initial data with the same property.
This paper is concerned with uniform regularity estimates for a family of Stokes systems with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients. We establish interior Lipschitz estimates for the velocity and $L^\infty$ estimates for the pressure as well as a Liouville property for solutions in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We also obtain the boundary $W^{1,p}$ estimates in a bounded $C^1$ domain for any $1<p<\infty$.
This paper presents a new approach to the local well-posedness of the $1d$ compressible Navier-Stokes systems with rough initial data. Our approach is based on establishing some smoothing and Lipschitz-type estimates for the $1d$ parabolic equation with piecewise continuous coefficients.
We establish large-scale interior Lipschitz estimates for solutions to systems of linear elasticity with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients and Dirichlet boundary conditions in domains with periodically placed inclusions of size $\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon)$ and magnitude $δ$ by establishing $H^1$-convergence rates for such solutions. The interior estimates at the macroscopic scale are derived directly without the use of compactness via a Campanato-type scheme presented by S. Armstrong and C.K. Smart and that was adapted for uniformly elliptic equations in by Armstrong and Z. Shen.
We prove a global version of the so-called div-curl-lemma, a crucial result for compensated compactness and in homogenization theory, for mixed tangential and normal boundary conditions in bounded weak Lipschitz domains in 3D and weak Lipschitz interfaces. The crucial tools and the core of our arguments are the de Rham complex and Weck's selection theorem, the essential compact embedding result for Maxwell's equations.
We investigate the initial-boundary value problem for one-dimensional compressible, heat-conductive, non-resistive MHD equations of viscous, ideal polytropic fluids in the Lagrangian coordinates. The existence and Lipschitz continuous dependence on the initial data of global weak solutions are established. Uniqueness of weak solutions follows as a direct consequence of stability.
In this paper we develop some new techniques to study the multiscale elliptic equations in the form of $-\text{div} \big(A_\varepsilon \nabla u_{\varepsilon} \big) = 0$, where $A_\varepsilon(x) = A(x, x/\varepsilon_1,\cdots, x/\varepsilon_n)$ is an $n$-scale oscillating periodic coefficient matrix, and $(\varepsilon_i)_{1\le i\le n}$ are scale parameters. We show that the $C^α$-Hölder continuity with any $α\in (0,1)$ for the weak solutions is stable, namely, the constant in the estimate is uniform for arbitrary $(\varepsilon_1, \varepsilon_2, \cdots, \varepsilon_n) \in (0,1]^n$ and particularl…
The paper concerns the sharp boundary regularity estimates in homogenization of Dirichlet problem for Stokes systems. We obtain the Lipschitz estimates for velocity term and $L^\infty$ estimate for pressure term, under some reasonable smoothness assumption on rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients. The approach is based on convergence rates, originally investigated by S. Armstrong and Z. Shen in \cite{SZ,SZW12}, however the argument developed here does not rely on the Rellich estimates. In this sense, we find a new way to obtain the sharp uniform boundary estimates without imposing the symm…
The goal of the present paper is to study the weak--strong uniqueness problem for the compressible Navier--Stokes system with a general barotropic pressure law. Our results include the case of a hard sphere pressure of Van der Waals type with a non--monotone perturbation and a Lipschitz perturbation of a monotone pressure. Although the main tool is the relative energy inequality, the results are conditioned by the presence of viscosity and do not seem extendable to the Euler system.
