The transmission problem is a system of two second-order elliptic equations of two unknowns equipped with the Cauchy data on the boundary. After four decades of research motivated by scattering theory, the spectral properties of this problem are now known to depend on a type of contrast between coefficients near the boundary. Previously, we established the discreteness of eigenvalues for a large class of anisotropic coefficients which is related to the celebrated complementing conditions due to Agmon, Douglis, and Nirenberg. In this work, we establish the Weyl law for the eigenvalues and the completeness of the generalized eigenfunctions for this class of coefficients under an additional mild assumption on the continuity of the coefficients. The analysis is new and based on the $L^p$ regularity theory for the transmission problem established here. It also involves a subtle application of the spectral theory for the Hilbert Schmidt operators. Our work extends largely known results in the literature which are mainly devoted to the isotropic case with $C^\infty$-coefficients.
Cakoni and Nguyen recently proposed very general conditions on the coefficients of Maxwell equations for which they established the discreteness of the set of eigenvalues of the transmission problem and studied their locations. In this paper, we establish the completeness of the generalized eigenfunctions and derive an optimal upper bound for the counting function under these conditions, assuming additionally that the coefficients are twice continuously differentiable. The approach is based on the spectral theory of Hilbert-Schmidt operators.
We consider a Schrödinger operator with bounded, measurable potential in multidimensional Euclidean space. We prove for every $L^2$-eigenfunction a quantitative equidistribution estimate. It compares the total $L^2$-norm with the $L^2$-norm over an equidistributed collection of balls. Our estimate is explicit with respect to the radius of the balls, norm of the potential and the energy of the eigenfunction. Similar estimates also hold for Weyl sequences and for linear combinations of eigenfunctions, as long as the associated eigenvalues are sufficiently close.
The transmission eigenvalue problem is a system of two second-order elliptic equations of two unknowns equipped with the Cauchy data on the boundary. In this work, we establish the Weyl law for the eigenvalues and the completeness of the generalized eigenfunctions for a system without complementing conditions, i.e., the two equations of the system have the same coefficients for the second order terms, and thus being degenerate. These coefficients are allowed to be anisotropic and are assumed to be of class $C^2$. One of the keys of the analysis is to establish the well-posedness and the regula…
In this paper, we study the boundary traces of eigenfunctions on the boundary of a smooth and bounded domain. An identity derived by Bäcker, Fürstburger, Schubert, and Steiner, expressing (in some sense) the asymptotic completeness of the set of boundary traces in a frequency window of size O(1), is proved both for Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. We then prove a semiclassical generalization of this identity.
We show that if $Y$ is a compact Riemannian manifold with improved $L^q$ eigenfunction estimates then, at least for large enough exponents, one always obtains improved $L^q$ bounds on the product manifold $X\times Y$ if $X$ is another compact manifold. Similarly, improved Weyl remainder term bounds on the spectral counting function of $Y$ lead to corresponding improvements on $X\times Y$. The latter results partly generalize recent ones of Iosevich and Wyman [14] involving products of spheres. Also, if $Y$ is a product of five or more spheres, we are able to obtain optimal $L^q(Y)$ and $L^q(X\…
On the solvability of the mixed problem for a fractional-order equation with a time-delay argument and pseudodifferential operators with non-local boundary conditions in Sobolev classes
We provide a limiting absorption principle for the self-adjoint realizations of Laplace operators corresponding to boundary conditions on (relatively open parts $Σ$ of) compact hypersurfaces $Γ=\partialΩ$, $Ω\subset{\mathbb{R}}^{n}$. For any of such self-adjoint operators we also provide the generalized eigenfunctions and the scattering matrix; both these objects are written in terms of operator-valued Weyl functions. We make use of a Krein-type formula which provides the resolvent difference between the operator corresponding to self-adjoint boundary conditions on the hypersurface and the fre…
The theme of this work is that the theory of charged particles in a uniform magnetic field can be generalized to a large class of operators if one uses an extended a class of Weyl operators which we call "Landau--Weyl pseudodifferential operators". The link between standard Weyl calculus and Landau--Weyl calculus is made explicit by the use of an infinite family of intertwining "windowed wavepacket transforms"; this makes possible the use of the theory of modulation spaces to study various regularity properties. Our techniques allow us not only to recover easily the eigenvalues and eigenfuncti…
We present eigenvalue data and pictures of eigenfunctions of the classic and quadratic snowflake fractal and of quadratic filled Julia sets. Furthermore, we approximate the area and box-counting dimension of selected Julia sets to compare the eigenvalue counting function with the Weyl term.
Let (M, g) be a compact smooth Riemannian manifold. We obtain new off-diagonal estimates as λ tend to infinity for the remainder in the pointwise Weyl Law for the kernel of the spectral projector of the Laplacian onto functions with frequency at most λ. A corollary is that, when rescaled around a non self-focal point, the kernel of the spectral projector onto the frequency interval (λ, λ+ 1] has a universal scaling limit as λ goes to infinity (depending only on the dimension of M). Our results also imply that if M has no conjugate points, then immersions of M into Euclidean space by an orthono…
In this paper, we present a Spectral-Galerkin Method to approximate the zero-index transmission eigenvalues with a conductive boundary condition. This is a new eigenvalue problem derived from the scalar inverse scattering problem for an isotropic media with a conductive boundary condition. In our analysis, we will consider the equivalent fourth-order eigenvalue problem where we establish the convergence when the approximation space is the span of finitely many Dirichlet eigenfunctions for the Laplacian. We establish the convergence rate of the spectral approximation by appealing to Weyl's law.…
In this paper, we determine, in the case of the Laplacian on the flat two-dimensional torus (R/Z) 2 , all the eigenvalues having an eigenfunction which satisfies Courant's theorem with equality (Courant-sharp situation). Following the strategy o A. Pleijel (1956), the proof is a combination of a lower bound a la Weyl) of the counting function, with an explicit remainder term, and of a Faber--Krahn inequality for domains on the torus (deduced as in B{é}rard-Meyer from an isoperimetric inequality), with an explicit upper bound on the area.
In this paper, we consider the numerical approximation of the Steklov eigenvalue problem that arises in inverse acoustic scattering. The underlying scattering problem is for an inhomogeneous isotropic medium. These eigenvalues have been proposed to be used as a target signature since they can be recovered from the scattering data. A Galerkin method is studied where the basis functions are the Neumann eigenfunctions of the Laplacian. Error estimates for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are proven by appealing to Weyl's Law. We will test this method against separation of variables in order to …
The paper is concerned with the Steklov eigenvalue problem on cuboids of arbitrary dimension. We prove a two-term asymptotic formula for the counting function of Steklov eigenvalues on cuboids in dimension d greater or equal to 3. Apart from the standard Weyl term, we calculate explicitly the second term in the asymptotics, capturing the contribution of the (d-2)-dimensional facets of a cuboid. Our approach is based on lattice counting techniques. While this strategy is similar to the one used for the Dirichlet Laplacian, the Steklov case carries additional complications. In particular, it is …
This paper considers boundary value problems for a class of singular elliptic operators which appear naturally in the study of asymptotically anti-de Sitter (aAdS) spacetimes. These problems involve a singular Bessel operator acting in the normal direction. After formulating a Lopatinskii condition, elliptic estimates are established for functions supported near the boundary. The Fredholm property follows from additional hypotheses in the interior. This paper provides a rigorous framework for mode analysis on aAdS spacetimes for a wide range of boundary conditions considered in the physics lit…
