We show that if $Y$ is a compact Riemannian manifold with improved $L^q$ eigenfunction estimates then, at least for large enough exponents, one always obtains improved $L^q$ bounds on the product manifold $X\times Y$ if $X$ is another compact manifold. Similarly, improved Weyl remainder term bounds on the spectral counting function of $Y$ lead to corresponding improvements on $X\times Y$. The latter results partly generalize recent ones of Iosevich and Wyman [14] involving products of spheres. Also, if $Y$ is a product of five or more spheres, we are able to obtain optimal $L^q(Y)$ and $L^q(X\times Y)$ eigenfunction and spectral cluster estimates for large $q$, which partly addresses a conjecture from [14] and is related to (and is partly based on) classical bounds for the number of integer lattice point on $λ\cdot S^{n-1}$ for $n\ge5$.
We prove a general estimate for the Weyl remainder of an elliptic, semiclassical pseudodifferential operator in terms of volumes of recurrence sets for the Hamilton flow of its principal symbol. This quantifies earlier results of Volovoy. Our result particularly improves Weyl remainder exponents for compact Lie groups and surfaces of revolution. And gives a quantitative estimate for Bérard's Weyl remainder in terms of the maximal expansion rate and topological entropy of the geodesic flow.
The celebrated Hardy-Landau lower bound for the error term in the Gauss's circle problem can be viewed as an estimate from below for the remainder in Weyl's law on a square, with either Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. We prove an analogous estimate for smooth star-shaped planar domains admitting an appropriate one-parameter family of periodic billiard trajectories. Examples include ellipses and smooth domains of constant width. Our results confirm a prediction of P. Sarnak who proved a similar statement for surfaces without boundary. We also obtain lower bounds on the error term in h…
We obtain new quantitative estimates on Weyl Law remainders under dynamical assumptions on the geodesic flow. On a smooth compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ of dimension $n$, let $Π_λ$ denote the kernel of the spectral projector for the Laplacian, $\mathbb{1}_{[0,λ^2]}(-Δ_g)$. Assuming only that the set of near periodic geodesics over $W\subset M$ has small measure, we prove that as $λ\to \infty$ $$ \int_{W} Π_λ(x,x)dx=(2π)^{-n}\text{vol}_{\mathbb{R}^n}(B)\text{vol}_g(W)\,λ^n+O\Big(\frac{λ^{n-1}}{\log λ}\Big),$$ where $B$ is the unit ball. One consequence of this result is that the improved r…
Let (M, g) be a compact smooth Riemannian manifold. We obtain new off-diagonal estimates as λ tend to infinity for the remainder in the pointwise Weyl Law for the kernel of the spectral projector of the Laplacian onto functions with frequency at most λ. A corollary is that, when rescaled around a non self-focal point, the kernel of the spectral projector onto the frequency interval (λ, λ+ 1] has a universal scaling limit as λ goes to infinity (depending only on the dimension of M). Our results also imply that if M has no conjugate points, then immersions of M into Euclidean space by an orthono…
Given a compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$, Chazarain, Hörmander, Duistermaat, and Guillemin study the half-wave trace $\operatorname{HWT}_{M,g}(τ) \in \mathscr{S}'(\mathbb{R}_τ)$. From the asymptotics of the half-wave trace as $τ\to 0$, Hörmander deduces the now standard remainder $\smash{O(σ^{d-1}) = O(λ^{d/2-1/2})}$ in Weyl's law, where $d=\dim M$. Given a dynamical assumption implying additional local regularity, Duistermaat and Guillemin improve this to $o(σ^{d-1})$. By examining the Tauberian step in the argument, we show how a quantitative version \[N(σ) = Z(σ) + O(σ^{d-1}\mathcal{R}(σ…
We examine the asymptotics of the spectral counting function of a compact Riemannian manifold by V.G.~Avakumovic \cite{Avakumovic} and L.~Hörmander \cite{Hormander-eigen} and show that for the scale of orthogonal and unitary groups ${\bf SO}(N)$, ${\bf SU}(N)$, ${\bf U}(N)$ and ${\bf Spin}(N)$ it is not sharp. While for negative sectional curvature improvements are possible and known, {\it cf.} e.g., J.J.~Duistermaat $\&$ V.~Guillemin \cite{Duist-Guill}, here, we give sharp and contrasting examples in the positive Ricci curvature case [non-negative for ${\bf U}(N)$]. Furthermore here the impro…
Let $H$ denote the harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian on $\mathbb{R}^d,$ perturbed by an isotropic pseudodifferential operator of order $1.$ We consider the Schrödinger propagator $U(t)=e^{-itH},$ and find that while $\operatorname{singsupp} \operatorname{Tr} U(t) \subset 2 π\mathbb{Z}$ as in the unperturbed case, there exists a large class of perturbations in dimension $d \geq 2$ for which the singularities of $\operatorname{Tr} U(t)$ at nonzero multiples of $2 π$ are weaker than the singularity at $t=0$. The remainder term in the Weyl law is of order $o(λ^{d-1})$, improving in these cases the $…
For a Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ which is isometric to the Euclidean space outside of a compact set, and whose trapped set has Liouville measure zero, we prove Weyl type asymptotics for the scattering phase with remainder depending on the classical escape rate and the maximal expansion rate. For Axiom A geodesic flows, this gives a polynomial improvement over the known remainders. We also show that the remainder can be bounded above by the number of resonances in some neighbourhoods of the real axis, and provide similar asymptotics for hyperbolic quotients using the Selberg zeta function.
We study the asymptotic behavior of the counting function of tensor products of operators, in the cases where the factors are either pseudodifferential operators on closed manifolds, or pseudodifferential operators of Shubin type on $\mathbb{R}^n$, respectively. We obtain, in particular, the sharpness of the remainder term in the corresponding Weyl formulae, which we prove by means of the analysis of some explicit examples.
In this paper, by explicitly calculating the principal symbols of pseudodifferential operators and by applying Hömander's spectral function theorem, we obtain the Weyl-type asymptotic formulas with sharp remainder estimates for the counting functions of the two classes of biharmonic Steklov eigenvalues $λ_k$ and $μ_k$ in a smooth bounded domain of a Riemannian manifold. This solves a longstanding challenging problem.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of the eigenvalue counting function for self-adjoint elliptic linear operators defined through classical weighted symbols of order $(1,1)$, on an asymptotically Euclidean manifold. We first prove a two term Weyl formula, improving previously known remainder estimates. Subsequently, we show that under a geometric assumption on the Hamiltonian flow at infinity there is a refined Weyl asymptotics with three terms. The proof of the theorem uses a careful analysis of the flow behaviour in the corner component of the boundary of the double compactification of the co…
Let $Ω$ be a bounded domain with $C^\infty$ boundary in an $n$-dimensional $C^\infty$ Riemannian manifold, and let $\varrho$ be a non-negative bounded function defined on $\partial Ω$. It is well-known that for the biharmonic equation $Δ^2 u=0$ in $Ω$ with the 0-Dirichlet boundary condition, there exists an infinite set $\{u_k\}$ of biharmonic functions in $Ω$ with positive eigenvalues $\{λ_k\}$ satisfying $Δu_k+ λ_k \varrho \frac{\partial u_k}{\partial ν}=0$ on the boundary $\partial Ω$. In this paper, we give the Weyl-type asymptotic formula with a sharp remainder estimate for the counting f…
In this work, we consider fixed $1/2$ spin particles interacting with the quantized radiation field in the context of quantum electrodynamics (QED). We investigate the time evolution operator in studying the reduced propagator (interaction picture). We first prove that this propagator belongs to the class of infinite dimensional Weyl pseudodifferential operators recently introduced in \cite {A-J-N} on Wiener spaces. We give a semiclassical expansion of the symbol of the reduced propagator up to any order with estimates on the remainder terms. Next, taking into account analyticity properties fo…
We give a new fractal Weyl upper bound for resonances of convex co-compact hyperbolic manifolds in terms of the dimension $n$ of the manifold and the dimension $δ$ of its limit set. More precisely, we show that as $R\to\infty$, the number of resonances in the box $[R,R+1]+i[-β,0]$ is $O(R^{m(β,δ)+})$, where the exponent $m(β,δ)=\min(2δ+2β+1-n,δ)$ changes its behavior at $β=(n-1-δ)/2$. In the case $δ<(n-1)/2$, we also give an improved resolvent upper bound in the standard resonance free strip $\{\mathrm{Im}\ λ > δ-(n-1)/2\}$. Both results use the fractal uncertainty principle point of view rece…
In the whole space $R^d$, $d\ge 2$, we study homogenization of a divergence form elliptic fourth-order operator $A_\varepsilon$ with measurable $\varepsilon$-periodic coefficients, where $\varepsilon$ is a small parameter. For the resolvent $(A_\varepsilon+1)^{-1}$, acting as an operator from $L^2$ to $H^2$, we find an approximation with remainder term of order $O(\varepsilon^2)$ as $\varepsilon$ tends to $0$. Relying on this result, we construct the resolvent approximation with remainder of order $O(\varepsilon^3)$ in the operator $L^2$-norm. We employ two-scale expansions that involve smooth…
In this paper, we study the two-point Weyl Law for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a smooth, compact Riemannian manifold $M$ with no conjugate points. That is, we find the asymptotic behavior of the Schwartz kernel, $E_λ(x,y)$, of the projection operator from $L^2(M)$ onto the direct sum of eigenspaces with eigenvalue smaller than $λ^2$ as $λ\to\infty$. In the regime where $x,y$ are restricted to a compact neighborhood of the diagonal in $M\times M$, we obtain a uniform logarithmic improvement in the remainder of the asymptotic expansion for $E_λ$ and its derivatives of all orders, which gene…
In this paper, we are interested in the problem of scattering by strictly convex obstacles in the plane. We provide an upper bound for the number $N(r,γ)$ of resonances in the box $\{r \le \Re(λ) \le r + 1$; $\Im(λ) \ge - γ\}$. It was proved in a work of S. Nonnenmacher, J. Sj{ö}strand and M. Zworski (2014) that $N (r,γ) = O_γ(r^{d_H})$ where $2d_H + 1$ is the Hausdorff dimension of the trapped set of the billiard flow. In this article, we provide an improved upper bound in the band $0 \le γ< γ_{cl} /2$, where $γ_{cl}$ is the classical decay rate of the flow. This improved Weyl upper bound is …
This article concerns new off-diagonal estimates on the remainder and its derivatives in the pointwise Weyl law on a compact n-dimensional Riemannian manifold. As an application, we prove that near any non self-focal point, the scaling limit of the spectral projector of the Laplacian onto frequency windows of constant size is a normalized Bessel function depending only on n.
For exponents in the subcritical range, we revisit some optimal interpolation inequalities on the sphere with carré du champ methods and use the remainder terms to produce improved inequalities. The method provides us with lower estimates of the optimal constants in the symmetry breaking range and stability estimates for the optimal functions. Some of these results can be reformulated in the Euclidean space using the stereographic projection.
In the whole space $R^d$ ($d\ge 2$), we study homogenization of a divergence-form matrix elliptic operator $L_\varepsilon$ of an arbitrary even order larger than 2 with measurable $\varepsilon$-periodic coefficients, where $\varepsilon$ is a small parameter. We constuct an approximation for the resolvent of $L_\varepsilon$ with the remainder term of order $\varepsilon^2$ in the operator $L^2$-norm. We impose no regularity conditions on the operator beyond ellipticity and boundedness of coefficients. We use two scale expansions with correctors regularized by the Steklov smoothing.
We consider a family of Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev interpolation inequalities which interpolate between Sobolev's inequality and the logarithmic Sobolev inequality, with optimal constants. The difference of the two terms in the interpolation inequalities (written with optimal constant) measures a distance to the manifold of the optimal functions. We give an explicit estimate of the remainder term and establish an improved inequality, with explicit norms and fully detailed constants. Our approach is based on nonlinear evolution equations and improved entropy - entropy production estimates alon…
