The parity-preserving $U_A(1)\times U_a(1)$ massive QED$_3$ is ultraviolet finiteness -- exhibits vanishing $β$-functions, associated to the gauge coupling constants (electric and pseudochiral charges) and the Chern-Simons mass parameter, and all the anomalous dimensions of the fields -- as well as is parity and gauge anomaly free at all orders in perturbation theory. The proof is independent of any regularization scheme and it is based on the quantum action principle in combination with general theorems of perturbative quantum field theory by adopting the Becchi-Rouet-Stora (BRS) algebraic renormalization method in the framework of Bogoliubov-Parasiuk-Hepp-Zimmermann (BPHZ) subtraction scheme.
The three-dimensional noncommutative supersymmetric QED is investigated within the superfield approach. We prove the absence of UV/IR mixing in the theory at any loop order and demonstrate its one-loop finiteness.
Within the superfield formalism, we study the ultraviolet properties of the three-dimensional supersymmetric quantum electrodynamics. The theory is shown to be finite at all loops orders in a particular gauge.
It is shown that the Hamiltonian approach for a $ϕ^3$-interaction on the 4-dimensional noncommutative Minkowski space leads to an ultraviolet finite $S$-matrix if the noncommutativity is averaged at each vertex.
We present and discuss well known conditions for ultraviolet finiteness and asymptotic safety. The requirements for complete absence of ultraviolet divergences in quantum field theories and existence of a non-trivial fixed point for renormalization group flow in the ultraviolet regime are compared based on the example of a six-derivative quantum gravitational theory in $d=4$ spacetime dimensions. In this model, it is possible for the first time to have fully UV-finite quantum theory without adding matter or special symmetry, but by inclusion of additional terms cubic in curvatures. We comment …
Different models of field theories in two dimensions can be described by the action $Tr\int \vf F$. In the presence of a curved background, we construct a local supersymmetry-like transformations under which the action is invariant. Furthermore, by analysing the cohomology of the theory we show the absence of anomalies. Also the ultraviolet as well as the infrared finiteness of the theory are proven to all orders of perturbation theory.
The ultraviolet divergences of amplitude diagrams in maximal supergravity are characterised by a first possible divergence at seven loops for the 4-point amplitude (logarithmic) and, in its absence, at eight loops. We revisit the pure spinor superfield theory results of [arXiv:1412.5983], stating the absence of the divergence originating in the 4-point 7-loop amplitude as well as those of more than seven loops. The analysis, performed in terms of the one-particle irreducible loop structures giving rise to the divergences, is extended, especially with respect to the limits on the dimension for …
In this lecture we summarize recent calculations pointing to the possible ultraviolet finiteness of N = 8 supergravity in four dimensions. We outline the modern unitarity method, which enables multiloop calculations in this theory and allows us to exploit a remarkable relation between tree-level gravity and gauge-theory amplitudes. We also describe a link between observed cancellations at loop level and improved behavior of tree-level amplitudes under large complex deformations of momenta.
The two--dimensional topological BF model is considered in the Landau gauge in the framework of perturbation theory. Due to the singular behaviour of the ghost propagator at long distances, a mass term to the ghost fields is introduced as infrared regulator. Relying on the supersymmetric algebraic structure of the resulting massive theory, we study the infrared and ultraviolet renormalizability of the model, with the outcome that it is perturbatively finite.
We consider the perturbation theory in the fermion mass (chiral perturbation theory) for the two-dimensional quantum electrodynamics. With this aim, we rewrite the theory in the equivalent bosonic form in which the interaction is exponential and the fermion mass becomes the coupling constant. We reformulate the bosonic perturbation theory in the superpropagator language and analyze its ultraviolet behavior. We show that the boson Green's functions without vacuum loops remain finite in all orders of the perturbation theory in the fermion mass.
We study counterterms (CT's), candidates for UV divergences in the four-dimensional N=8 supergravity. They have been constructed long ago in a Lorentz covariant on shell superspace and recently in the chiral light-cone (LC) superspace. We prove that all of these CT's are ruled out since they are not available in the real LC superspace. This implies the perturbative UV finiteness of d=4 N=8 supergravity under the assumption that supersymmetry and continuous E7 symmetry are anomaly-free. The proof, based on the chiral nature of CT's in the LC superspace, is a generalization of the perturbative F…
In the superfield formalism, two higher-derivative kinetic operators (Lee-Wick operators) are implemented into the standard three dimensional supersymmetric quantum electrodynamics for improving its ultraviolet behavior. It is shown in particular that the ghosts associated with these Lee-Wick operators allow to remove all ultraviolet divergences in the scalar and gauge self-energies at two-loop level.
We study the ultraviolet and the infrared behavior of 2D topological BF-Theory coupled to vector and scalar fields. This model is equivalent to 2D gravity coupled to topological matter. Using techniques of the algebraic renormalization program we show that this model is anomaly free and ultraviolet as well as infrared finite at all orders of perturbation theory.
Here we discuss the ultraviolet and infrared aspects of the noncommutative counterpart of QED, which is called as noncommutative QED, as well as some infrared dynamics of noncommutative Yang-Mills (NCYM) theory. First we demonstrate that the divergence in the theory can be subtracted by the similar counterterms as in ordinary theory at one loop level. Then the anomalous magnetic moment is calculated to see the infrared aspect of the theory which reflects the violation of Lorentz symmetry. The evaluation of the finite part of the photon vacuum polarization shows that the logarithmically singula…
An algebraic criterion for the vanishing of the beta function for renormalizable quantum field theories is presented. Use is made of the descent equations following from the Wess-Zumino consistency condition. In some cases, these equations relate the fully quantized action to a local gauge invariant polynomial. The vanishing of the anomalous dimension of this polynomial enables us to establish a nonrenormalization theorem for the beta function $β_g$, stating that if the one-loop order contribution vanishes, then $β_g$ will vanish to all orders of perturbation theory. As a by-product, the speci…
In a previous companion paper [arXiv:0712.3532], we proposed two new regulators for quantum field theories in spacetimes with compactified extra dimensions. Unlike most other regulators which have been used in the extra-dimension literature, these regulators are specifically designed to respect the original higher-dimensional Lorentz and gauge symmetries that exist prior to compactification, and not merely the four-dimensional symmetries which remain afterward. In this paper, we use these regulators in order to develop a method for extracting ultraviolet-finite results from one-loop calculatio…
The well-known physical equivalence drawn from hole theory is applied in this article. The author suggests to replace, in the part of Feynman diagram which cannot be fixed by experiments, each fermion field operator, and hence fermion propagator, by pairs of equivalent fermion field operators and propagators. The formulation of this article thus yields additional terms which reveal characteristic effects that have not been explored previously; such characteristic effects lead to the appearence of logarithmic running terms and that finite radiative corrections are directly obtained in calculati…
We prove that three-dimensional Yang-Mills theories in the Landau gauge supplemented with a infrared regulating, parity preserving mass term are ultraviolet finite to all orders. We also extend this result to the Curci-Ferrari gauge.
In this paper we discuss finiteness and ambiguities of the higher-derivative Lorentz-breaking terms in extended QED with a magnetic coupling at the finite temperature. We find that, beside of the higher-derivative Carroll-Field-Jackiw-like term and Myers-Pospelov term, many new terms arise in a finite temperature case, but most of them vanish in high temperature limit.
We study the gauge-covariance of the massless fermion propagator in three-dimensional quenched Quantum Electrodynamics in the framework of dimensional regularization in d=3-2\ep. Assuming the finiteness of the quenched perturbative expansion, that is the existence of the limit \ep \to 0, we state that, exactly in d=3, all odd perturbative coefficients, starting with the third order one, should be zero in any gauge.
We show that the BF theory in any space-time dimension, when quantized in a certain linear covariant gauge, possesses a vector supersymmetry. The generator of the latter together with those of the BRS transformations and of the translations form the basis of a superalgebra of the Wess-Zumino type. We give a general classification of all possible anomalies and invariant counterterms. Their absence, which amounts to ultraviolet finiteness, follows from purely algebraic arguments in the lower-dimensional cases.
We consider a simple nonlinear (quartic in the fields) gauge-invariant modification of classical electrodynamics, which possesses a regularizing ability sufficient to make the field energy of a point charge finite. The model is exactly solved in the class of static central-symmetric electric fields. Collation with quantum electrodynamics (QED) results in the total field energy about twice the electron mass. The proof of the finiteness of the field energy is extended to include any polynomial selfinteraction, thereby the one that stems from the truncated expansion of the Euler-Heisenberg local …
Planar Quantum Electrodynamics is developed when charged fermions are under the influence of a constant and homogeneous external magnetic field. We compute the cross-length for the scattering of optical/ultraviolet photons by Dirac-Landau electrons.
A renormalizable rigid supersymmetry for the four dimensional antisymmetric tensor field model in a curved space-time background is constructed. A closed algebra between the BRS and the supersymmetry operators is only realizable if the vector parameter of the supersymmetry is a covariantly constant vector field. This also guarantees that the corresponding transformations lead to a genuine symmetry of the model. The proof of the ultraviolet finiteness to all orders of perturbation theory is performed in a pure algebraic manner by using the rigid supersymmetry.
We calculate the change in the ultraviolet behaviour of the vortex operator due to the presence of dynamical Higgs field in both 2+1 dimensional QED and the 2+1 dimensional Georgi-Glashow model. We find that in the QED case the presence of the Higgs field leads at the one loop level to power like correction to the propagator of the vortex operator. On the other hand, in the Georgi-Glashow model, the adjoint Higgs at one loop has no affect on the vortex propagator. Thus, as long as the mass of the Higgs field is much larger than the gauge coupling constant, the ultraviolet behaviour of the vort…
An arbitrary renormalizable quantum field theory is considered as finite if its dimensionless couplings conspire to yield, at every order of its perturbative expansion, no ultraviolet-divergent renormalizations of the physical parameters of the theory. The "finiteness conditions" resulting from these requirements form highly complicated, non-linear systems of relations. A promising type of solution to the condition for one-loop finiteness of the Yukawa couplings involves Yukawa couplings which are equivalent to the generators of Clifford algebras with identity element. However, our attempt to …
We extend the recent one loop analysis of the ultraviolet completion of the $CP(N)$ nonlinear $σ$ model in six dimensions to two loop order in the MSbar scheme for an arbitrary covariant gauge. In particular we compute the anomalous dimensions of the fields and $β$-functions of the four coupling constants. We note that like Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) in four dimensions the matter field anomalous dimension only depends on the gauge parameter at one loop. As a non-trivial check we verify that the critical exponents derived from these renormalization group functions at the Wilson-Fisher fixed …
Here we examine the noncommutative counterpart of QED, which is called as noncommutative QED. The theory is obtained by examining the consistent minimal coupling to noncommutative U(1) gauge field. The *-product admits the coupling of the matter with only three varieties of charges, i.e., 0, +1 and -1. Ultraviolet divergence can be absorbed into the rescaling of the fields and the parameters at least at one loop level. To examine the infrared aspect of the theory the anomalous magnetic dipole moment is calculated. The dependence on the direction of photon momentum reflects the Lorentz symmetry…

Finite quantum field theories may be constructed from the most general renormalizable quantum field theory by forbidding, order by order in the perturbative loop expansion, all ultraviolet-divergent renormalizations of the physical parameters of the theory. The relevant finiteness conditions resulting from this requirement relate all dimensionless couplings in the theory. At first sight, Yukawa couplings which are equivalent to the generators of some Clifford algebra with identity element represent a very promising type of solutions of the condition for one-loop finiteness of the Yukawa coupli…
Based on the covariant background field method, we calculate the ultraviolet counter\-terms up to two-loop order and discuss the renormalizability of the three-dimensional non-linear sigma models with arbitrary Riemannian manifolds as target spaces. We investigate the bosonic model and its supersymmetric extension. We show that at the one-loop level these models are renormalizable and even finite when the manifolds are Ricci-flat. However, at the two-loop order, we find non-renormalizable counterterms in all cases considered, so the renormalizability and finiteness of such models are completel…
With the introduction of shadow fields, we demonstrate the renormalizability of the N=4 super-Yang--Mills theory in component formalism, independently of the choice of UV regularization. Remarkably, by using twisted representations, one finds that the structure of the theory and its renormalization is determined by a subalgebra of supersymmetry that closes off-shell. Starting from this subalgebra of symmetry, we prove some features of the superconformal invariance of the theory. We give a new algebraic proof of the cancellation of the $β$ function and we show the ultraviolet finiteness of the …
Models explaining dark matter typically include interactions with charged scalar and fermion fields. The Infra-Red (IR) finiteness of thermal field theories of charged fermions (fermionic QED) has been proven to all orders in perturbation theory. Here we reexamine the IR behaviour of charged scalar theories at finite temperature. Using the method of Grammer and Yennie, we identify and factorise the infra-red divergences to all orders in perturbation theory. The inclusion of IR finite pieces arising from the 4-point interaction terms of scalars with photon fields is key to the exponentiation. W…
In this paper we will consider the ultraviolet (UV) finiteness of the most general one-particle irreducible ($1$PI) Feynman diagrams within the context of ghost-free, infinite-derivative scalar toy model, which is inspired from ghost free and singularity-free infinite-derivative theory of gravity. We will show that by using dressed vertices and dressed propagators, $n$-loop, $N$-point diagrams constructed out of lower-loop $2$- & $3$-point and, in general, $N_i$-point diagrams are UV finite with respect to internal and external loop momentum. Moreover, we will demonstrate that the external mom…
Among 12672 Feynman diagrams contributing to the electron anomalous magnetic moment at the tenth order, 6354 are the diagrams having no lepton loops, i.e., those of quenched type. Because the renormalization structure of these diagrams is very complicated, some automation scheme is inevitable to calculate them. We developed an algorithm to write down FORTRAN programs for numerical evaluation of these diagrams, where the necessary counterterms to subtract out ultraviolet subdivergence are generated according to Zimmermann's forest formula. Thus far we have evaluated crudely integrals of 2232 te…
With the help of a Stueckelberg field we construct a regularized U(1) gauge invariant action through the introduction of cutoff functions. This action has the property that it converges formally to the unregularized action of QED when the ultraviolet cutoff goes to infinity. Integrating out exactly the Stueckelberg field we obtain a simple effective regularized action, which is fully gauge invariant and gives rise to the same prediction as QED at the tree level and to the one loop order.
Quantum parity conservation is verified at all orders in perturbation theory for a massless parity-even $U(1)\times U(1)$ planar quantum electrodynamics (QED$_3$) model. The presence of two massless fermions requires the Lowenstein-Zimmermann (LZ) subtraction scheme, in the framework of the Bogoliubov-Parasiuk-Hepp-Zimmermann-Lowenstein (BPHZL) renormalization method, in order to subtract the infrared divergences induced by the ultraviolet subtractions at 1- and 2-loops, however thanks to the superrenormalizability of the model the ultraviolet divergences are bounded up to 2-loops. Finally, it…
The Wilsonian renormalization group implies that an arbitrary four dimensional field theory with an ultraviolet cutoff is equivalent to a theory which is renormalizable by power counting at energy scales much below the cutoff. This applies to any theory including those with non-renormalizable interactions as long as we fine-tune the mass parameters. We analyze two simple models with current-current interactions but without elementary gauge fields from this viewpoint. We show how to tune the parameters of the models so that they become equivalent to QED at energies much below the cutoff.
Perturbative aspects of ultraviolet and infrared dynamics of noncommutative quantum field theory is examined in detail. It is observed that high loop momentum contribution to the nonplanar diagram develops a new infrared singularity with respect to the external momentum. This singular behavior is closely related to that of ultraviolet divergence of planar diagram. It is also shown that such a relation is precise in noncommutative Yang-Mills theory, but the same feature does not persist in noncommutative generalization of QED.
The quantum of action $\hbar$, multiplying in certain powers perturbative vertices in 4D gauge theory, is related to the action of just-not-resolved selfdual and thermal gauge field configurations, calorons and anticalorons, of charge modulus unity. Appealing to the derivation of the effective theory for the deconfining phase of SU(2) Yang-Mills thermodynamics, we conclude that these vertex inducers convey a rapidly decreasing interaction strength between {\sl fundamental} plane waves when the momentum transfer is increased away from the scale of maximal, {\sl effective} resolution. This adds …
For a general renormalizable ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theory with a simple gauge group we verify the ultraviolet (UV) finiteness of the two-loop matter contribution to the triple gauge-ghost vertices. These vertices have one leg of the quantum gauge superfield and two legs corresponding to the Faddeev--Popov ghost and antighost. By an explicit calculation made with the help of the higher covariant derivative regularization we demonstrate that the sum of the corresponding two-loop supergraphs containing a matter loop is not UV divergent in the case of using a general $ξ$-gauge. In the …
We show that ultraviolet divergences found in fermionic Green's functions of massless $QED_2$ have an essentially non-perturbative nature. We investigate their origin both in gauge invariant formalism (the one where we introduce Wess-Zumino fields to restore quantum gauge invariance) and in gauge non-invariant formalism, mapping two different but equivalent mechanisms responsible for their appearance. We find the same results in both approaches, what contradicts a previous work of Jian-Ge, Qing-Hai and Yao-Yang, that found no divergences in the chiral Schwinger model considered in the gauge in…
We discuss in this paper the vacuum Cherenkov radiation in the $z=2$ Lifshitz electrodynamics. The improved ultraviolet behavior, in terms of higher spatial derivatives, and the renormalizable couplings, due to the time-space anisotropic scaling, present in the Lifshitz setting are extremely important in fulfilling the physical constraints in order to this vacuum process to happen. We evaluate in details the instantaneous rate of energy loss for a charge, and also analyze the emission of very soft photons in this framework.
This paper develops a detailed lattice-continuum correspondence for all common examples of Abelian gauge theories, with and without matter. These rules for extracting a continuum theory out of a lattice one represent an elementary way to rigorously define continuum gauge theories. The focus is on (2+1)D but the techniques developed here work in all dimensions. The first half of this paper is devoted to pure Maxwell theory. It is precisely shown how continuum Maxwell theory emerges at low energies in an appropriate parameter regime of the $\mathbb{Z}_K$ lattice gauge theory at large $K$. The fa…
The problem of gauge invariance in an ultraviolet complete quantum field theory (QFT) with nonlocal interactions is investigated. For local fields that couple through a nonlocal interaction, it is demonstrated that the quantum electrodynamic (QED) sector of the electroweak (EW) model without a Higgs particle is gauge invariant. The non-Abelian QFT with massless gluons and nonlocal interactions is shown to be gauge invariant, and a perturbative S-matrix formalism in the interaction representation is investigated. The finite self-energy of a fermion and vacuum polarization are derived to first o…
We discuss the formulation of the prototype gauge field theory, QED, in the context of two-particle-irreducible (2PI) functional techniques with particular emphasis on the issues of renormalization and gauge symmetry. We show how to renormalize all $n$-point vertex functions of the (gauge-fixed) theory at any approximation order in the 2PI loop-expansion by properly adjusting a finite set of local counterterms consistent with the underlying gauge symmetry. The paper is divided in three parts: a self-contained presentation of the main results and their possible implementation for practical appl…
By imposing on the most general renormalizable quantum field theory the requirement of the absence of ultraviolet-divergent renormalizations of the physical parameters (masses and coupling constants) of the theory, finite quantum field theories in four space-time dimensions may be constructed. Famous prototypes of these form certain well-known classes of supersymmetric finite quantum field theories. Within a perturbative evaluation of the quantum field theories under consideration, the starting point of all such investigations is represented by the conditions for one- and two-loop finiteness o…
Despite its simplicity, the unitary gauge is not a popular choice for practical loop calculations in gauge theories, due to the lack of off-shell renormalizability. We study the renormalization properties of the off-shell Green functions of the elementary electron fields in the massive QED, in order to elucidate the origin and structure of the extra ultraviolet divergences which exist only in the unitary gauge. We find that all these divergences affect the Green functions in a trivial way such that in coordinate space the off-shell Green functions are in fact multiplicatively renormalizable. T…
