We extend the recent one loop analysis of the ultraviolet completion of the $CP(N)$ nonlinear $σ$ model in six dimensions to two loop order in the MSbar scheme for an arbitrary covariant gauge. In particular we compute the anomalous dimensions of the fields and $β$-functions of the four coupling constants. We note that like Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) in four dimensions the matter field anomalous dimension only depends on the gauge parameter at one loop. As a non-trivial check we verify that the critical exponents derived from these renormalization group functions at the Wilson-Fisher fixed point are consistent with the $ε$ expansion of the respective large $N$ exponents of the underlying universal theory. Using the Ward-Takahashi identity we deduce the three loop MSbar renormalization group functions for the six dimensional ultraviolet completeness of scalar QED.
This letter constructs, making use of the on-shell spinor-helicity formalism, a possible ultraviolet completion of gravity following a "bottom-up" approach. The assumptions of locality, unitarity and causality i) require an infinite tower of resonances with increasing spin and quantized mass, ii) introduce a duality relation among crossed scattering channels, and iii) dress all gravitational amplitudes in the Standard Model with a form factor that closely resembles either the Veneziano or the Virasoro-Shapiro amplitude in string theory. As a consequence of unitarity, the theory predicts leadin…
We construct a weakly coupled, renormalizable ultraviolet completion of the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity (LHT), based on an SU(5)xSU(2)xU(1) gauge theory with a discrete Z_2 symmetry. Our model reproduces the complete structure of the LHT below the 10 TeV scale, including the collective symmetry breaking mechanism which solves the little hierarchy problem. The model is manifestly free of anomalies, including both gauge/gravitational anomalies and anomalies involving T-parity. At the TeV scale, the model contains additional states not present in the LHT. We estimate the impact of these st…
We highlight how the existence of an ultraviolet completion for interacting Standard-Model type matter puts constraints on the viable microscopic dynamics of asymptotically safe quantum gravity within truncated Renormalization Group flows. A first constraint -- the weak-gravity bound -- is rooted in the destruction of quantum scale-invariance in the matter system by strong quantum-gravity fluctuations. A second constraint arises by linking Planck-scale dynamics to the dynamics at the electroweak scale. Specifically, we delineate how to extract a prediction of the top quark mass from asymptotic…
We study some of the implications for the perturbative renormalization program when augmented with the Borel-Ecalle resummation. We show the emergence of a new kind of non-perturbative fixed point for the scalar $ϕ^4$ model, representing an ultraviolet self-completion by transseries. We argue that this completion is purely non-Wilsonian and it depends on one arbitrary constant stemming from the transseries solution of the renormalization group equation. On the other hand, if no fixed points are demanded through the adjustment of this arbitrary constant, we end up with an effective theory in wh…
Second-order-derivative plus fourth-order-derivative gravity is the ultraviolet completion of second-order-derivative quantum Einstein gravity. While it achieves renormalizability through states of negative Dirac norm, the unitarity violation that this would entail can be postponed to Planck energies. As we show in this paper the theory has a different problem, one that occurs at all energy scales, namely that the Dirac norm of the vacuum of the theory is not finite. To establish this we present a procedure for determining the norm of the vacuum in any quantum field theory. With the Dirac norm…

The connection of maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory to the (2,0) theory in six dimensions has raised the possibility that it might be perturbatively ultraviolet finite in five dimensions. We test this hypothesis by computing the coefficient of the first potential ultraviolet divergence of planar (large N_c) maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in D = 5, which occurs at six loops. We show that the coefficient is nonvanishing. Furthermore, the numerical value of the divergence falls very close to an approximate exponential formula based on the coefficients of the divergences throu…
We investigate whether the six-loop beta function of the $λϕ^4_4$ theory exhibits evidence for an ultraviolet zero. As part of our analysis, we calculate and analyze Padé approximants to this beta function. Extending our earlier results at the five-loop level, we find that in the range of $λ$ where the perturbative calculation of the six-loop beta function is reliable, the theory does not exhibit robust evidence for an ultraviolet zero.
We study the possibility of an ultraviolet (UV) zero in the six-loop beta function of an O($N$) $λ|\vec ϕ|^4$ field theory in $d=4$ spacetime dimensions. For general $N$, in the range of values of $λ$ where a perturbative calculation is reliable, we find evidence against such a UV zero in this six-loop beta function.
Pure $T\bar{T}$ deformations of conformal field theories are generally asymptotically incomplete in the ultra-violet (UV) due to square-root singularities in the ground state energy on a cylinder of circumference $R$, such that the theory is ill-defined for distances shorter than some critical $R_*$. In this article we show how a theory can be completed if one includes an infinite number of additional irrelevant perturbations. This is fully demonstrated in the case of the Ising model at $c_{IR}= 1/2$ in the infra-red (IR), where we find two completions with central charges $c_{UV} = 3/2$ and $…
Via supersymmetry argument, we determine the effective action of the SU(2) supersymmetric Yang-Mills quantum mechanics up to two constants, which results from the full supersymmetric completion of the F^4 term. The effective action, consisting of zero, two, four, six and eight fermion terms, agrees with the known perturbative one-loop calculations from the type II string theory and the matrix theory. Our derivation thus demonstrates its non-renormalization properties, namely, the one-loop exactness of the aforementioned action and the absence of the non-perturbative corrections. We briefly dis…
The phase diagram of four-dimensional Einstein-Hilbert gravity is studied using Wilson's renormalization group. Smooth trajectories connecting the ultraviolet fixed point at short distances with attractive infrared fixed points at long distances are derived from the non-perturbative graviton propagator. Implications for the asymptotic safety conjecture and further results are discussed.
We study the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) term as the leading higher-curvature correction to pure Einstein gravity. Assuming a tree-level ultraviolet completion free of ghosts or tachyons, we prove that the GB term has a nonnegative coefficient in dimensions greater than four. Our result follows from unitarity of the spectral representation for a general ultraviolet completion of the GB term.

It is shown that, $(a Λ^2 + b |H|^2)R$ in a spacetime of curvature $R$ is a natural ultraviolet $(U\!V)$ completion of $(a Λ^4 + b Λ^2 |H|^2)$ in the flat-spacetime Standard Model $(S\!M)$ with Higgs field $H$, $U\!V$ scale $Λ$ and loop factors $a$, $b$. This curvature completion rests on the fact that a $Λ$-mass gauge theory in flat spacetime turns, on the cut-view $R = 4 Λ^2$, into a massless gauge theory in curved spacetime. It provides a symmetry reason for curved spacetime, wherein gravity and matter are both low-energy effective phenomena. Gravity arises correctly if new physics exists w…
We describe the supersymmetric completion of several curvature-squared invariants for ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supergravity in six dimensions. The construction of the invariants is based on a close interplay between superconformal tensor calculus and recently developed superspace techniques to study general off-shell supergravity-matter couplings. In the case of minimal off-shell Poincaré supergravity based on the dilaton-Weyl multiplet coupled to a linear multiplet as a conformal compensator, we describe off-shell supersymmetric completions for all the three possible purely gravitational curvature-sq…
The ultraviolet divergences of amplitude diagrams in maximal supergravity are investigated using the pure spinor superfield formalism in maximal supergravity, with maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory for reference. We comment on the effects of the loop regularisation in relation to the actual absence of high powers (within the degrees of freedom) of the non-minimal variable r. The absence affects previous results of the field theory description, which is examined more closely (with a new b-ghost) with respect to the limit on the dimension for finiteness of the theory, dependent on the n…
The CDF and D0 collaborations have observed a forward-backward asymmetry in t-tbar production at large invariant mass in excess of the standard model prediction. One explanation involves a heavy color octet particle with axial vector couplings to quarks (an axigluon). We describe and contrast various aspects of axigluons obtained from the breaking of a chiral SU(3)_L x SU(3)_R gauge theory both from the standpoint of a string-inspired field theory and from a quiver analysis of a local type IIa intersecting brane construction. Special attention is paid to the additional constraints and issues t…
We compute all the tree-level contributions to the Wilson coefficients of the dimension-six Standard-Model effective theory in ultraviolet completions with general scalar, spinor and vector field content and arbitrary interactions. No assumption about the renormalizability of the high-energy theory is made. This provides a complete ultraviolet/infrared dictionary at the classical level, which can be used to study the low-energy implications of any model of interest, and also to look for explicit completions consistent with low-energy data.
We study a five dimensional Horava-Lifshitz like scalar QED with dynamical exponent z=2. Consistency of the renormalization procedure requires the presence of four quartic and one six-fold scalar couplings besides the terms bilinear in the scalar fields. We compute one-loop radiative corrections to the parameters in the original Lagrangian employing dimensional regularization in the spacial part of the Feynman integrals and prove the relevant Ward identities. By using renormalization group methods, we determine the behavior of the coupling constants with changes in the energy and discuss the e…
We explore a simple parameterization of new physics that results in an ultraviolet complete gauge-quark sector of the Standard Model. Specifically, we add an antiscreening contribution to the beta functions of the gauge couplings and a flavor-independent, antiscreening contribution to the beta functions of the Yukawa couplings. These two free parameters give rise to an intricate web of Renormalization Group fixed points. Their predictive power extends to the flavor structure and mixing patterns, which we investigate to demonstrate that some of the free parameters of the Standard Model could be…
We revisit the issue of higher-dimensional counterterms for the N=(1,1) supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory in six dimensions using the off-shell N=(1,0) and on-shell N=(1,1) harmonic superspace approaches. The second approach is developed in full generality and used to solve, for the first time, the N=(1,1) SYM constraints in terms of N=(1,0) superfields. This provides a convenient tool to write explicit expressions for the candidate counterterms and other N=(1,1) invariants and may be conducive to proving non-renormalization theorems needed to explain the absence of certain logarithmic di…
We show that it is possible to formulate a gauge theory starting from a local action at the ultraviolet (UV) momentum cutoff which is BRS invariant. One has to require that fields in the UV action and the fields in the effective action are not the same but related by a local field transformation. The few relevant parameters involved in this transformation (six for the $SU(2)$ gauge theory), are perturbatively fixed by the gauge symmetry.
The ultraviolet completion of gauge theories by higher derivative terms can dramatically change their behavior at high energies. The requirement of asymptotic freedom imposes very stringent constraints that are only satisfied by a small family of higher derivative theories. If the number of derivatives is large enough ($n > 4$) the theory is strongly interacting both at extreme infrared and ultraviolet regimes whereas it remains asymptotically free for a low number of extra derivatives ($n \leqslant 4$). In all cases the theory improves its ultraviolet behavior leading in some cases to ultravi…
Supersymmetric gauge theories in five dimensions often exhibit less symmetry than the ultraviolet fixed points from which they flow. The fixed points might have larger flavor symmetry or they might even be secretly six-dimensional theories on S^1. Here we provide a simple criterion when such symmetry enhancement in the ultraviolet should occur, by a direct study of the fermionic zero modes around one-instanton operators.
Because of ultraviolet/infrared (UV/IR) mixing, the low energy physics of noncommutative gauge theories in the Moyal-Weyl approach seems to depend crucially on the details of the ultraviolet completion. However, motivated by recent string theory analyses, we argue that their phenomenology with a very general class of UV completions can be accurately modelled by a cutoff close to the Planck scale. In the infrared the theory tends continuously to the commutative gauge theory. If the photon contains contributions from a trace-U(1), we would observe vacuum birefringence, i.e. a polarisation depend…
We construct and discuss a 6D supersymmetric gauge theory involving four derivatives in the action. The theory involves a dimensionless coupling constant and is renormalizable. At the tree level, it enjoys N = (1,0) superconformal symmetry, but the latter is broken by quantum anomaly. Our study should be considered as preparatory for seeking an extended version of this theory which would hopefully preserve conformal symmetry at the full quantum level and be ultraviolet-finite.
We investigate whether the seven-loop beta function of the $λϕ^4_4$ theory exhibits evidence for an ultraviolet zero. In addition to a direct analysis of the beta function, we calculate and study Padé approximants and discuss effects of scheme transformations on the results. Confirming and extending our earlier studies of the five-loop and six-loop beta functions, we find that in the range of $λ$ where the perturbative calculation of the seven-loop beta function is reliable, the theory does not exhibit evidence for an ultraviolet zero.
We construct a ultraviolet completion of the bosonic sector of 11-dimensional supergravity motivated by string field theory. We start from a general class of theories characterized by an entire nonpolynomial form factor which allows one to avoid new poles in the propagator and improves the high-energy behavior of the loops amplitudes. Comparing these models with effective string field theory, a unique form factor is selected out. In view of this, we modify 10-dimensional supergravity and finally get a ultraviolet completion of 11-dimensional supergravity by an oxidation process. The result is …
We analyze the one-loop effective gauge-field action in $Z_2$-orbifold compactifications of type-I theory. We show how, for non-abelian group factors, the threshold effects are ultraviolet finite though given entirely by a six-dimensional field theory expression.
We study issues concerning perturbative integrability of N=6 Chern-Simons theory at planar and weak `t Hooft coupling regime. By Feynman diagrammatics, we derive so called maximal-ranged interactions in the quantum dilatation generator, originating from homogeneous and inhomogeneous diagrams. These diagrams require proper regularization of not only ultraviolet but also infrared divergences. We first consider standard operator mixing method. We show that homogeneous diagrams are obtainable by recursive method to all orders. The method, however, is not easily extendable to inhomogeneous diagrams…
We parametrise the space of all possible flavour non-universal $\mathfrak{u}(1)_X$ extensions of the Standard Model that embed inside anomaly-free semi-simple gauge theories, including up to three right-handed neutrinos. More generally, we parametrise all abelian extensions (i.e.) by any number of $\mathfrak{u}(1)$'s) of the SM with such semi-simple completions. The resulting space of abelian extensions is a collection of planes of dimensions $\leq 6$. Numerically, we find that roughly $2.5\%$ of anomaly-free $\mathfrak{u}(1)_X$ extensions of the SM with a maximum charge ratio of $\pm 10$ can …
We construct Lifshitz scalar field theories in 4+1 dimensions which retain 3+1-d Lorentz invariance and therefore ensure a unique limiting speed in the 3+1-d world. Such a construction is potentially useful in developing field-theoretic ultraviolet completions of extra-dimensional field theories. The extra dimension y is treated asymmetrically from the usual three spatial dimensions by introducing derivatives of order 2n with respect to y in the action. We show that lambda phi^4 theory becomes progressively less non-renormalisable by power counting as n is increased. This suggests that the non…
We explore whether quantum gravity effects within the asymptotic safety paradigm can provide a predictive ultraviolet completion for Abelian gauge theories. We evaluate the effect of quantum gravity fluctuations on the running couplings in the gauge sector and discover an asymptotically safe fixed point of the Renormalization Group. In particular, if the strength of gravitational interactions remains below a critical strength, the minimal gauge coupling becomes asymptotically free. Further, we point out that a completely asymptotically free dynamics for the gauge field is impossible to achieve…
We construct new dispersive sum rules for the effective field theory of the standard model at mass dimension six. These spinning sum rules encode information about the spin of UV states: the sign of the IR Wilson coefficients carries a memory of the dominant spin in the UV completion. The sum rules are constructed for operators containing scalars and fermions, although we consider the dimension-six SMEFT exhaustively, outlining why equivalent relations do not hold for the remaining operators. As with any dimension-six dispersive argument, our conclusions are contingent on the absence of potent…
We consider $O(N)$-symmetric bosonic $ϕ^4$ field theories above four dimensions, and propose a new reformulation in terms of an irreducible tensorial field with a cubic and Yukawa terms. The $ϕ^4$ field theory so rewritten exhibits real and nontrivial IR-stable fixed points near and below six dimension, for low values of $N$ such as $N=2$ and $N=3$. The so-defined UV completions of the $O(2)$ and $O(3)$ models hence constitute precious examples of asymptotically safe quantum field theories. The possibility of an extension of our results to five dimensions is discussed.

We consider a supersymmetric completion of codimension-two branes with nonzero tension in a 6D gauged supergravity. As a consequence, we obtain the football solution with 4D Minkowski space as a new supersymmetric background that preserves 4D N=1 SUSY. In the presence of brane multiplets, we derive the 4D effective supergravity action for the football background and show that the remaining modulus can be stabilized by a bulk non-perturbative correction with brane uplifting potentials at a zero vacuum energy. We find that the U(1)_R mediation can be a dominant source of SUSY breaking for a bran…
We study how theories defined in (extra-dimensional) spaces with localized defects can be described perturbatively by effective field theories in which the width of the defects vanishes. These effective theories must incorporate a ``classical'' renormalization, and we propose a renormalization prescription a la dimensional regularization for codimension 1, which can be easily used in phenomenological applications. As a check of the validity of this setting, we compare some general predictions of the renormalized effective theory with those obtained in a particular ultraviolet completion based …
