We consider a lattice regularization, preserving Ward Identities (WI) and with a Wilson term, of the Massive QED$_2$, describing a fermion with mass $m$ and charge $\mathsf{e}$ interacting with a vector field with mass $M$, in the regime $m\ll M\ll a^{-1}$ ($a$ being the lattice spacing) which is the suitable one to mimic a realistic 4d massive gauge theory like the Electroweak sector. The presence of the lattice and of the mass $m$ breaks any solvability property. In this paper we prove that the effective action obtained after the integration of the ultraviolet degrees of freedom is expressed by expansions which are convergent for values of the coupling $|\mathsf{e}|\le \mathsf{e}_0$, with $\mathsf{e}_0$ independent on $a$ and $m$, and with cut-off-independent bare parameters. By combining this result with the analysis of the infrared part in previous papers we get a complete construction of the model and a number of properties whose analogous are expected to hold in 4d. The analysis is done by integrating out the bosons and reducing to a fermionic theory; however, with respect to the case with momentum regularizations (which break essential features like the WI), the resulting effective fermionic action has not a simple form and this requires the developments of new methods to get the necessary bounds.
In the context of massless quantum electrodynamics (QED) with a linear covariant gauge fixing, the connection between the counterterm and the Hopf-algebraic approach to renormalization is examined. The coproduct formula of Green's functions contains two invariant charges, which give rise to different renormalization group functions. All formulas are tested by explicit computations to third loop order. The possibility of a finite electron self-energy by fixing a generalized linear covariant gauge is discussed. An analysis of subdivergences leads to the conclusion that such a gauge only exists i…
We continue the study of the ultraviolet problem for QED in d=3 using Balaban's formulation of the renormalization group. The model is defined on a fine toroidal lattice and we seek control as the lattice spacing goes to zero. Drawing on earlier papers in the series the renormalization group flow is completely controlled for weak coupling. The main result is an ultraviolet stability bound in a fixed finite volume.
We study the ultraviolet problem for QED in d=3 using Balaban's formulation of the renormalization group. The model is defined on a fine toroidal lattice and we seek control as the lattice spacing goes to zero. As a first step we take a bounded field approximation and solve the renormalization problem. Namely we show that the bare energy density and the bare fermion mass can be chosen to depend on the lattice spacing, so that under the renormalization group flow they take preassigned values on unit scale. This is accomplished by a nonpertubative technique which is insensitive to whether the re…
Ultraviolet (UV) renormalization of the Nelson model in quantum field theory is considered. A relationship between a ultraviolet renormalization term and the ground state energy of the Hamiltonian with total momentum zero is studied by functional integrations.
The parity-preserving $U_A(1)\times U_a(1)$ massive QED$_3$ is ultraviolet finiteness -- exhibits vanishing $β$-functions, associated to the gauge coupling constants (electric and pseudochiral charges) and the Chern-Simons mass parameter, and all the anomalous dimensions of the fields -- as well as is parity and gauge anomaly free at all orders in perturbation theory. The proof is independent of any regularization scheme and it is based on the quantum action principle in combination with general theorems of perturbative quantum field theory by adopting the Becchi-Rouet-Stora (BRS) algebraic re…
For scalar QED on a three-dimensional toroidal lattice with a fine lattice spacing we consider the renormalization problem of choosing counter terms depending on the lattice spacing, so that the theory stays finite as the spacing goes to zero. We employ a renormalization group method which analyzes the flow of the mass and the vacuum energy as a problem in discrete dynamical systems. The main result is that counter terms can be choosen so that at the end of the iteration these quantities take preassigned values. No use is made of perturbation theory. The renormalization group transformations a…
It is emphasized that for interactions with derivative couplings, the Ward Identity (WI) securing the preservation of a global U(1) symmetry should be modified. Scalar QED is taken as an explicit example. More precisely, it is rigorously shown in scalar QED that the naive WI and the improved Ward Identity ("Master Ward Identity", MWI) are related to each other by a finite renormalization of the time-ordered product ("T-product") for the derivative fields; and we point out that the MWI has advantages over the naive WI - in particular with regard to the proof of the MWI. We show that the MWI can…
In nonrelativistic QED the charge of an electron equals its bare value, whereas the self-energy and the mass have to be renormalized. In our contribution we study perturbative mass renormalization, including second order in the fine structure constant $α$, in the case of a single, spinless electron. As well known, if $m$ denotes the bare mass and $\mass$ the mass computed from the theory, to order $α$ one has $$\frac{\mass}{m} =1+\frac{8α}{3π} \log(1+\half (Λ/m))+O(α^2)$$ which suggests that $\mass/m=(Λ/m)^{8α/3π}$ for small $α$. If correct, in order $α^2$ the leading term should be $\displays…
Using the Pauli-Fierz model of non-relativistic quantum electrodynamics, we calculate the binding energy of an electron in the field of a nucleus of charge $Z$ and in presence of the quantized radiation field. We consider the case of small coupling constant $α$, but fixed $Zα$ and ultraviolet cut-off $Λ$. We prove that after renormalizing the mass the binding energy has, to leading order in $α$, a finite limit as $Λ$ goes to infinity; i.e., the cut-off can be removed. The expression for the ground state energy shift thus obtained agrees with Bethe's formula for small values of $Zα$, but shows …
We consider a spin-$\frac12$ electron in a translation-invariant model of non-relativistic Quantum Electrodynamics (QED). Let $H(\vp,\sig)$ denote the fiber Hamiltonian corresponding to the conserved total momentum $\vp\in\R^3$ of the Pauli electron and the photon field, regularized by a fixed ultraviolet cutoff in the interaction term, and an infrared regularization parametrized by $0<\sig\ll1$ which we ultimately remove by taking $\sig\searrow0$. For $|\vp|<\puppbd$, all $\sig>0$, and all values of the finestructure constant $\gs<\gs_0$, with $\gs_0\ll1$ sufficiently small and {\em independe…
Starting from the N-particle Nelson Hamiltonian defined by imposing an ultraviolet cutoff, we perform ultraviolet renormalization by showing that in the zero cutoff limit a self-adjoint operator exists after a logarithmically divergent term is subtracted from the original Hamiltonian. We obtain this term as the diagonal part of a pair interaction appearing in the density of a Gibbs measure derived from the Feynman-Kac representation of the Hamiltonian. Also, we show existence of a weak coupling limit of the renormalized Hamiltonian and derive an effective Yukawa interaction potential between t…
Various models of charged particles interacting with a quantized, ultraviolet cutoff radiation field (but not with each other) are investigated. Upper and lower bounds are found for the self- or ground state-energies without mass renormalization. For $N$ fermions the bounds are proportional to $N$, but for bosons they are sublinear, which implies `binding', and hence that `free' bosons are never free. Both `relativistic' and non-relativistic kinematics are considered. Our bounds are non-perturbative and differ significantly from the predictions of perturbation theory.
We consider the ground state of an atom in the framework of non-relativistic qed. We assume that the ultraviolet cutoff is of the order of the Rydberg energy and that the atomic Hamiltonian has a non-degenerate ground state. We show that the ground state energy and the ground state are k-times continuously differentiable functions of the fine structure constant and respectively the square root of the fine structure constant on some nonempty interval [0,c_k).
The translation invariant model in quantum field theory is considered by functional integrations. Ultraviolet renormalization of the translation invariant Nelson model with a fixed total momentum is proven by functional integrations. As a corollary it can be shown that the Nelson Hamiltonian with zero total momentum has a ground state for arbitrary values of coupling constants in two dimension. Furthermore the ultraviolet renormalization of the polaron model is also studied.
We consider a non-relativistic electron bound by an external potential and coupled to the quantized electromagnetic field in the standard model of non-relativistic QED. We compute the energy functional of product states of the form $u\otimes Ψ_f$, where $u$ is a normalized state for the electron and $Ψ_f$ is a coherent state in Fock space for the photon field. The minimization of this functional yields a Maxwell--Schr{ö}dinger system up to a trivial renormalization. We prove the existence of a ground state under general conditions on the external potential and the coupling. In particular, neit…
The operator-theoretic renormalization group (RG) methods are powerful analytic tools to explore spectral properties of field-theoretical models such as quantum electrodynamics (QED) with non-relativistic matter. In this paper these methods are extended and simplified. In a companion paper, our variant of operator-theoretic RG methods is applied to establishing the limiting absorption principle in non-relativistic QED near the ground state energy
We prove existence of a ground state and resonances in the standard model of the non-relativistic quantum electro-dynamics (QED). To this end we introduce a new canonical transformation of QED Hamiltonians and use the spectral renormalization group technique with a new choice of Banach spaces.
We consider the infrared problem in a model of a freely propagating, nonrelativistic charged particle of mass 1 in interaction with the quantized electromagnetic field. The hamiltonian of the system is regularized by an infrared cutoff $\ssig\ll 1$ and an ultraviolet cutoff $Λ\sim 1$ in the interaction term, in units of the mass of the charged particle. Due to translation invariance, it suffices to study $\Hps$, the restriction of the hamiltonian to the fibre Hilbert space of the conserved momentum operator associated to total momentum $p\in\R^3$. Under the condition that the coupling constant…
A stochastic process with self-interaction as a model of quantum field theory is studied. We consider an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck stochastic process x(t) with interaction of the form x^{(α)}(t)^4, where $α$ indicates the fractional derivative. Using Bogoliubov's R-operation we investigate ultraviolet divergencies for the various parameters $α$. Ultraviolet properties of this one-dimensional model in the case $α=3/4$ are similar to those in the $ϕ^4_4$ theory but there are extra counterterms. It is shown that the model is two-loops renormalizable. For $5/8\leq α< 3/4$ the model has a finite number of…
Application of asymptotic freedom to the ultraviolet stability in Euclidean quantum field theories is revisited and illustrated through the hierarchical model making also use of a few technical developments that followed the original works of Wilson on the renormalization group.
