We report that the density profiles of globular cluster (GC) systems in a sample of 17 early-type galaxies (ETGs) show breaks at the radii where the gravitational acceleration exerted by the stars equals the galactic acceleration scale $a_0$ known from the radial acceleration relation or MOND. The match with the other characteristic radii in the galaxy is not that close. We propose possible explanations in the frameworks of the $Λ$CDM model and MOND. We find tentative evidence that in the $Λ$CDM context, GCs reveal not only the masses of the dark halos through the richness of the GC systems but also the concentrations through the break radii of the GC systems.
Globular clusters are collisional systems, meaning that the stars inside them interact on timescales much shorter than the age of the Universe. These frequent interactions transfer energy between stars and set up observable trends that tell the story of a cluster's evolution. This contribution focuses on what we can learn by studying velocity anisotropy and energy equipartition in globular clusters with Hubble Space Telescope proper motions.
We report results on the kinematics of Milky Way (MW) globular clusters (GCs) based on updated space velocities for nearly the entire GC population. We found that a 3D space with the semi-major axis, the eccentricity and the inclination of the orbit with respect to the MW plane as its axes is helpful in order to dig into the formation of the GC system. We find that GCs formed in-situ show a clear correlation between their eccentricities and their orbital inclination in the sense that clusters with large eccentricities also have large inclinations. These GCs also show a correlation between thei…
The galactic acceleration scale is imprinted on globular cluster systems of early-type galaxies of most masses and on red and blue globular cluster subpopulations
Several scenarios have been proposed to explain the presence of multiple stellar populations in globular clusters. Many of them invoke multiple generations of stars to explain the observed chemical abundance anomalies, but it has also been suggested that self-enrichment could occur via accretion of ejecta from massive stars onto the circumstellar disc of low-mass pre-main sequence stars. These scenarios imply different initial conditions for the kinematics of the various stellar populations. Given some net angular momentum initially, models for which a second generation forms from gas that col…
Stellar kinematics in the external regions of globular clusters can be used to probe the validity of Newton's law in the low acceleration regimes without the complication of non-baryonic dark matter. Indeed, in contrast with what happens when studying galaxies, in globular clusters a systematic deviation of the velocity dispersion profile from the expected Keplerian falloff would provide indication of a breakdown of Newtonian dynamics rather than the existence of dark matter. We perform a detailed analysis of the velocity dispersion in the globular cluster omega Centauri in order to investigat…
Observational evidence revealing the main mechanisms that accelerate quasar outflows has proven difficult to obtain, due to the complexity of the absorption features that this gas produces in the spectra of the emission sources. We build 36 composite outflow spectra, covering a large range of outflow and quasar parameters, by stacking broad ($>450\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$) absorption line systems in the spectra of SDSS-III/BOSS DR12 quasars. The two lines of the atomic doublet of CIV, with a separation of $\approx 497\,{\rm km\,s^{-1}}$, as well as those of other species appear well resolved in most…
We test the modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) theory with the velocity-dispersion profiles of Galactic globular clusters populating the outermost region of the Milky Way halo, where the Galactic acceleration is lower than the characteristic MOND acceleration a_0. For this purpose, we constructed self-consistent, spherical models of stellar systems in MOND, which are the analogues of the Newtonian King models. The models are spatially limited, reproduce well the surface-brightness profiles of globular clusters, and have velocity-dispersion profiles that differ remarkably in shape from the corr…
The Phoenix stellar stream has a low intrinsic dispersion in velocity and metallicity that implies the progenitor was probably a low mass globular cluster. In this work we use Magellan/MIKE high-dispersion spectroscopy of eight Phoenix stream red giants to confirm this scenario. In particular, we find negligible intrinsic scatter in metallicity ($σ(\mathrm{[Fe~II/H]}) = 0.04^{+0.11}_{-0.03}$) and a large peak-to-peak range in [Na/Fe] and [Al/Fe] abundance ratios, consistent with the light element abundance patterns seen in the most metal-poor globular clusters. However, unlike any other globul…
Globular clusters are useful to test the validity of Newtonian dynamics in the low acceleration regime typical of galaxies, without the complications of non-baryonic dark matter. Specifically, in absence of disturbing effects, e.g. tidal heating, their velocity dispersion is expected to vanish at large radii. If such behaviour is not observed, and in particular if, as observed in elliptical galaxies, the dispersion is found constant at large radii below a certain threshold acceleration, this might indicate a break down of Newtonian dynamics. To minimise the effects of tidal heating in this pap…
This work reports the detection of a multi peaked colour pattern in the integrated colours distribution of globular clusters associated to the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4486, using Next Generation Virgo Survey data. This feature is imprinted on the well known bimodal colour distribution of these clusters. Remarkably, the pattern is similar to that found in previous works based on photometry from the HST Advanced Camera Virgo Survey, in less massive Virgo galaxies. This characteristic can be traced up to to 45 arcmin (217 Kpc) in galactocentric radius. This suggests that globular cluster form…
We discuss a model for the Milky Way obtained by fitting the observed terminal velocities with the radial acceleration relation. The resulting stellar surface density profile departs from a smooth exponential disk, having bumps and wiggles that correspond to massive spiral arms. These features are used to estimate the term for the logarithmic density gradient in the Jeans equation, which turn out to have exactly the right location and amplitude to reconcile the apparent discrepancy between the stellar rotation curve and that of the interstellar gas. This model also predicts a gradually declini…
Young star clusters (YSCs) appear to be a ubiquitous product of star formation in local galaxies, thus, they can be used to study the star formation process at work in their host galaxies. Moreover, YSCs are intrinsically brighter that single stars, potentially becoming the most important tracers of the recent star formation history in galaxies in the local Universe. In local galaxies, we also witness the presence of a large population of evolved star clusters, commonly called globular clusters (GCs). GCs peak formation history is very close to the redshift (z~2) when the cosmic star formation…
High velocity stars are stars moving at velocities so high to require an acceleration mechanism involving binary systems or the presence of a massive central black hole. In the frame of a galaxy hosting a supermassive black hole binary (of total mass $10^8$ M$_\odot$), we investigated a mechanism for the production of high velocity stars due to the close interaction between a massive and orbitally decayed globular cluster and the super massive black hole binary. Some stars of the cluster acquire high velocities by conversion of gravitational energy into kinetic energy deriving from their inter…
Globular clusters may host intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) at their centres. Here we propose a new method for their identification using millisecond pulsars (MSPs) as probes. We show that measuring the first (jerk) and second (jounce) derivatives of the accelerations of an ensemble of MSPs will let us infer the presence of an IMBH in a globular cluster better than measuring the sole accelerations. We test this concept by simulating a set of star clusters with and without a central IMBH to extract the distributions of the stellar jerks and jounces. We then apply this technique to the ense…
The Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy has an anomalous number of globular clusters, five, for its stellar mass. There is a longstanding debate about a potential sixth globular cluster (Fornax~6) that has recently been `rediscovered' in DECam imaging. We present new Magellan/M2FS spectroscopy of the Fornax~6 cluster and Fornax dSph. Combined with literature data we identify $\sim15-17$ members of the Fornax~6 cluster that this overdensity is indeed a star cluster and associated with the Fornax dSph. The cluster is significantly more metal-rich (mean metallicity of $\overline{\rm [Fe/H]}=-0.71\pm0.…
Observations show the presence, in the halo of our Galaxy, of stars moving at velocities so high to require an acceleration mechanism involving the presence of a massive central black hole. Thus, in the frame of a galaxy hosting a supermassive black hole ($10^8$ $M_{\odot}$) we investigated a mechanism for the production of high velocity stars, which was suggested by the results of N-body simulations of the close interaction between a massive, orbitally decayed, globular cluster and the super massive black hole. The high velocity acquired by some stars of the cluster comes from the transfer of…
Pure power-law density profiles, $ρ(r)\propto r^{b-3}$, are classified in connection with the following reference cases: (i) isodensity, $b=3$, $ρ=$ const; (ii) isogravity, $b=2$, $g=$ const; (iii) isothermal, $b=1$, $v=[GM(r)/r]^{1/2}=$ const; (iv) isomass, $b=0$, $M=$ const. A restricted number of different families of density profiles including, in addition, cored power-law, generalized power-law, polytropes, are studied in detail with regard to both one-component and two-component systems. Considerable effort is devoted to the existence of an extremum point (maximum absolute value) in the …
To investigate the dynamical properties of globular clusters, the surface brightness and kinematic data were collected and fitted to a family of lowered isothermal models called LIMEPY models. For 18 studied globular clusters, the amounts of concentration, truncation, and anisotropy were determined. In addition, the cluster mass, half-mass radius, distance, and mass-to-light ratio were also obtained. In general, LIMEPY models could describe these clusters well. Among these 18 clusters, NGC 5139, NGC 6388, and NGC 7078 were claimed to be candidates to host intermediate-mass black holes in liter…
Testing Newtonian gravity in the weak-acceleration regime is vital to our understanding of the nature of the gravitational interaction. It has recently been claimed that the velocity dispersion profiles of several globular clusters flatten out at large radii, reminiscent of galaxy rotation curves, even though globular clusters are thought to contain little or no dark matter. We investigate this claim, using AAOmega observations of four globular clusters, namely M22, M30, M53 and M68. M30, one such cluster that has had this claim made for its velocity dispersion, was included for comparison wit…
We present a preliminary analysis of the effect of dynamical friction on the orbits of part of the globular clusters in our Galaxy. Our study considers an anisotropic velocity dispersion field approximated using the results of studies in the literature. An axisymmetric Galactic model with mass components consisting of a disc, a bulge, and a dark halo is employed in the computations. We provide a method to compute the dynamical friction acceleration in ellipsoidal, oblate, and prolate velocity distribution functions with similar density in velocity space. Orbital properties, such as mean time-v…
We report the discovery of a complex extended density enhancement in the Globular Clusters (GCs) in the central $\sim 0.5(^{\circ})^2$ ($\sim 0.06$ Mpc$^2$) of the Fornax cluster, corresponding to $\sim 50\%$ of the area within 1 core radius. This overdensity connects the GC system of NGC1399 to most of those of neighboring galaxies within $\sim 0.6^{\circ}$ ($\sim 210$ kpc) along the W-E direction. The asymmetric density structure suggests that the galaxies in the core of the Fornax cluster experienced a lively history of interactions that have left a clear imprint on the spatial distribution…
We present results of a series of Monte Carlo simulations investigating the imprint of a central intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) on the structure of a globular cluster. We investigate the three-dimensional and projected density profiles, and stellar disruption rates for idealized as well as realistic cluster models, taking into account a stellar mass spectrum and stellar evolution, and allowing for a larger, more realistic, number of stars than was previously possible with direct N-body methods. We compare our results to other N-body and Fokker-Planck simulations published previously. We f…
Sulphur (S) is a non-refractory alpha-element that is not locked into dust grains in the interstellar medium. Thus no correction to the measured, interstellar sulphur abundance is needed and it can be readily compared to the S content in stellar photospheres. Here we present the first measurement of sulphur in the metal poor globular cluster (GC) NGC 6397, as detected in a MIKE/Magellan high signal-to-noise, high-resolution spectrum of one red giant star. While abundance ratios of sulphur are available for a larger number of Galactic stars down to an [Fe/H] of ~ -3.5 dex, no measurements in gl…
Galactic globular clusters (GCs) are believed to have formed in-situ in the Galaxy as well as in dwarf galaxies later accreted onto the Milky Way. However, to date, there is no unambiguous signature to distinguish accreted GCs. Using specifically designed $N$-body simulations of GCs evolving in a variety of time-dependent tidal fields (describing the potential of a dwarf galaxy-Milky Way merger), we analyze the effects imprinted to the internal kinematics of an accreted GC. In particular, we look at the evolution of the velocity anisotropy. Our simulations show that at early phases, the veloci…
Based on MAGIC observations from June and July 2007, we have obtained an integral upper limit to the VHE energy emission of the globular cluster M13 of $F(E>200 \textrm{GeV})<5.1\times10^{-12} \textrm{cm}^{-2} \textrm{s}^{-1}$, and differential upper limits for $E>140 \textrm{GeV}$. Those limits allow us to constrain the population of millisecond pulsars within M13 and to test models for acceleration of leptons inside their magnetospheres and surrounding. We conclude that in M13 either millisecond pulsars are fewer than expected or they accelerate leptons less efficiently than predicted.

We perform a series of direct $N$-body calculations to investigate the effect of residual gas expulsion from the gas-embedded progenitors of present-day globular clusters (GCs) on the stellar mass function (MF). Our models start either tidally filling or underfilling, and either with or without primordial mass segregation. We cover 100 Myr of the evolution of modeled clusters and show that the expulsion of residual gas from initially mass-segregated clusters leads to a significantly shallower slope of the stellar MF in the low- ($m\leq 0.50 M_\odot$) and intermediate-mass ($\simeq 0.50-0.85 M_…
We investigate structure and kinematics of the second generation of stars (SG) formed from gaseous ejecta of the first generation of stars (FG) in forming globular clusters (GCs). We consider that SG can be formed from gaseous ejecta from AGB stars of FG with the initial total mass of 10^6-10^8 M_sun to explain the present masses of the Galactic GCs. Our 3D hydrodynamical simulations with star formation show that SG formed in the central regions of FG can have a significant amount of rotation (V/sigma ~0.8-2.5). The rotational amplitude of SG can depend strongly on the initial kinematics of FG…
Under a MONDian view, astrophysical systems are expected to follow Newtonian dynamics whenever the local acceleration is above the critical $a_{0}=1.2 \times 10^{-10} m s^{-2}$, and enter a modified regime for accelerations below this critical value. Indeed, the dark matter phenomenology on galactic and subgalactic scales appears always, and only, at low accelerations. It is standard to find the $a<a_{0}$ regime towards the low density outskirts of astronomical systems, where under a Newtonian interpretation, dark matter becomes conspicuous. Thus, it is standard to find, and to think, of the d…
Supersonically Induced Gas Objects (SIGOs), are structures with little to no dark matter component predicted to exist in regions of the Universe with large relative velocities between baryons and dark matter at the time of recombination. They have been suggested to be the progenitors of present-day globular clusters. Using simulations, SIGOs have been studied on small scales (around 2 Mpc), where these relative velocities are coherent. However, it is challenging to study SIGOs using simulations on large scales due to the varying relative velocities at scales larger than a few Mpc. Here, we stu…
Their ubiquity and extreme densities make star clusters probes of prime importance of galaxy evolution. Old globular clusters keep imprints of the physical conditions of their assembly in the early Universe, and younger stellar objects, observationally resolved, tell us about the mechanisms at stake in their formation. Yet, we still do not understand the diversity involved: why is star cluster formation limited to 1e5 Msun objects in the Milky Way, while some dwarf galaxies like NGC 1705 are able to produce clusters 10 times more massive? Why do dwarfs generally host a higher specific frequenc…
The information on Galactic assembly time is imprinted on the chemodynamics of globular clusters. This makes them important probes that help us to understand the formation and evolution of the Milky Way. Discerning between in-situ and ex-situ origin of these objects is difficult when we study the Galactic bulge, which is the most complex and mixed component of the Milky Way. To investigate the early evolution of the Galactic bulge, we analysed the globular cluster NGC 6355. We derived chemical abundances and kinematic and dynamic properties by gathering information from high-resolution spectro…
We use N-body simulations to revisit the globular cluster (GC) ``timing problem'' in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal (dSph). In agreement with earlier work, we find that, due to dynamical friction, GCs sink to the center of dark matter halos with a cuspy inner density profile but ``stall'' at roughly 1/3 of the core radius ($r_{\rm core}$) in halos with constant-density cores. The timescales to sink or stall depend strongly on the mass of the GC and on the initial orbital radius, but are essentially the same for either cuspy (NFW) or cored halos normalized to have the same total mass within $r_{\r…
Theoretical models suggest that intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) may form and reside in the centers of globular clusters. IMBHs are still elusive to observations, but the accelerations of pulsars may bring along a unique fingerprint of their presence. In this work, we focus on the pulsars in the globular cluster M62. Using the new distance of M62 obtained from Gaia observations, we find that the measured pulsars' accelerations suggest a central excess of mass in the range [1200, 6000]$M_{\odot}$, corresponding to [0.2, 1] percent of the current total mass of the cluster. Our analysis can …
To understand globular clusters (GCs) we need to comprehend how their formation process was able to produce their abundance distribution of light elements. In particular, we seek to figure out which stars imprinted the peculiar chemical signature of GCs. One of the best ways is to study the light-element anti-correlations in a large sample of GCs that are analysed homogeneously. As part of our spectroscopic survey of GCs with FLAMES, we present here the results of our study of about 30 red giant member stars in the low-mass, low-metallicity Milky Way cluster NGC 6535. We measured the metallici…
We present the analysis of the radial distributions and kinematic properties of the multiple stellar populations (mPOPs) hosted in the globular cluster (GC) NGC 6352 as part of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) "UV Legacy Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters" program. NGC 6352 is one of the few GCs for which the mPOP tagging in appropriate color-magnitude diagrams is clear in all evolutionary sequences. We computed high-precision stellar proper motions for the stars from the cluster's core out to 75 arcsec ($\sim$1.5 core radii, or $\sim$0.6 half-light radii). We find that, in the region explor…
Investigating the gravitational field in the early-type galaxies (ETGs, i.e. ellipticals and lenticulars) up to large radii is observationally difficult. It is questionable how the radial acceleration (RAR) in the ETGs looks like, i.e. the relation between the dynamically inferred gravitational acceleration and the acceleration expected from the distribution of the visible matter. This relation is nearly universal for the spiral galaxies, in agreement with the MOND modified dynamics paradigm. In this contribution, we investigate a sample of 15 ETGs. We extract their full kinematic profiles out…
ABRIDGED) We revise the formation of Galactic GCs by adding the detailed chemical composition of their different stellar generations (from 1200 giants in 19 GCs) to their global parameters. We propose to identify as GCs those showing the Na-O anticorrelation, and we classify the GCs according to kinematics and location in the Galaxy in disk/bulge, inner, and outer halo. We find that the LF of GCs is fairly independent of their population, suggesting that it is imprinted by the formation mechanism, and only marginally affected by the ensuing evolution. We show that a large fraction of the primo…
We investigate the mean velocity dispersion and the velocity dispersion profile of stellar systems in MOND, using the N-body code N-MODY, which is a particle-mesh based code with a numerical MOND potential solver developed by Ciotti, Londrillo and Nipoti (2006). We have calculated mean velocity dispersions for stellar systems following Plummer density distributions with masses in the range of $10^4 M_\odot$ to $10^9 M_\odot$ and which are either isolated or immersed in an external field. Our integrations reproduce previous analytic estimates for stellar velocities in systems in the deep MOND r…
We present maps of the stellar streams detected in the Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) and Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) catalogs using the STREAMFINDER algorithm. We also report the spectroscopic follow-up of the brighter DR2 stream members obtained with the high-resolution CFHT/ESPaDOnS and VLT/UVES spectrographs as well as with the medium-resolution NTT/EFOSC2 spectrograph. Two new stellar streams that do not have a clear progenitor are detected in DR2 (named Hrid and Gunnthra), and seven are detected in EDR3 (named Gaia-6 to Gaia-12). Several candidate streams are also identified. The software als…
Using a recent homogeneous sample of 40 high quality velocity dispersion profiles for Galactic globular clusters, we study the low gravitational acceleration regime relevant to the outskirts of these systems. We find that a simple empirical profile having a central Gaussian component and a constant large radius asymptote, $σ_{\infty}$, accurately describes the variety of observed velocity dispersion profiles. We use published population synthesis models, carefully tailored to each individual cluster, to estimate mass to light ratios from which total stellar masses, $M$, are inferred. We obtain…
Disentangling distinct stellar populations along the red-giant branches (RGBs) of Globular Clusters (GCs) is possible by using the pseudo two-color diagram dubbed chromosome map (ChM). One of the most intriguing findings is that the so-called first-generation (1G) stars, characterized by the same chemical composition of their natal cloud, exhibit extended sequences in the ChM. Unresolved binaries and internal variations in helium or metallicity have been suggested to explain this phenomenon. Here, we derive high-precision Hubble Space Telescope photometry of the GCs NGC6362 and NGC6838 and bui…

(abridged) Context. Gravitational fields at the outskirts of early-type galaxies (ETGs) are difficult to constrain observationally. It thus remains poorly explored how well the LCDM and MOND hypotheses agree with ETGs. Aims. This led us to gather a large sample of ETGs and examine homogeneously which dark matter halos they occupy, whether the halos follow the theoretically predicted stellar-to-halo mass relation (SHMR) and the halo mass-concentration relation (HMCR), whether ETGs obey MOND and the radial acceleration relation (RAR) observed for late-type galaxies (LTGs), and finally whether LC…
Over the past decade the discovery of three unique stellar populations and a large number of confirmed pulsars within the globular cluster Terzan 5 has raised questions over its classification. Using the long-term radio pulsar timing of 36 millisecond pulsars in the cluster core, we provide new measurements of key physical properties of the system. As Terzan 5 is located within the galactic bulge, stellar crowding and reddening make optical and near infrared observations difficult. Pulsar accelerations, however, allow us to study the intrinsic characteristics of the cluster independent of redd…
NGC 288 is a diffuse Galactic globular cluster, it is remarkable in that its low density results in internal accelerations being below the critical MOND $a_{0}$ acceleration throughout. This makes it an ideal testing ground for MONDian gravity, as the details of the largely unknown transition function between the Newtonian and modified regimes become unimportant. Further, exact analytical solutions exist for isothermal spherical equilibrium structures in MOND, allowing for arbitrary values of the anisotropy parameter, $β$. In this paper we use observations of the velocity dispersion profile of…
