Several scenarios have been proposed to explain the presence of multiple stellar populations in globular clusters. Many of them invoke multiple generations of stars to explain the observed chemical abundance anomalies, but it has also been suggested that self-enrichment could occur via accretion of ejecta from massive stars onto the circumstellar disc of low-mass pre-main sequence stars. These scenarios imply different initial conditions for the kinematics of the various stellar populations. Given some net angular momentum initially, models for which a second generation forms from gas that collects in a cooling flow into the core of the cluster predict an initially larger rotational amplitude for the polluted stars compared to the pristine stars. This is opposite to what is expected from the accretion model, where the polluted stars are the ones crossing the core and are on preferentially radial (low-angular momentum) orbits, such that their rotational amplitude is lower. Here we present the results of a suite of $N$-body simulations with initial conditions chosen to capture the distinct kinematic properties of these pollution scenarios. We show that initial differences in the kinematics of polluted and pristine stars can survive to the present epoch in the outer parts of a large fraction of Galactic globular clusters. The differential rotation of pristine and polluted stars is identified as a unique kinematic signature that could allow us to distinguish between various scenarios, while other kinematic imprints are generally very similar from one scenario to the other.
Globular clusters are collisional systems, meaning that the stars inside them interact on timescales much shorter than the age of the Universe. These frequent interactions transfer energy between stars and set up observable trends that tell the story of a cluster's evolution. This contribution focuses on what we can learn by studying velocity anisotropy and energy equipartition in globular clusters with Hubble Space Telescope proper motions.
We report that the density profiles of globular cluster (GC) systems in a sample of 17 early-type galaxies (ETGs) show breaks at the radii where the gravitational acceleration exerted by the stars equals the galactic acceleration scale $a_0$ known from the radial acceleration relation or MOND. The match with the other characteristic radii in the galaxy is not that close. We propose possible explanations in the frameworks of the $Λ$CDM model and MOND. We find tentative evidence that in the $Λ$CDM context, GCs reveal not only the masses of the dark halos through the richness of the GC systems bu…
We present the first results of the Multi-Instrument Kinematic Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters, a project aimed at exploring the internal kinematics of a representative sample of Galactic globular clusters from the radial velocity of individual stars, covering the entire radial extension of each system. This is achieved by exploiting the formidable combination of multi-object and integral field unit spectroscopic facilities of the ESO Very Large Telescope. As a first step, here we discuss the results obtained for 11 clusters from high and medium resolution spectra acquired through a combi…
The internal dynamics of multiple stellar populations in Globular Clusters (GCs) provides unique constraints on the physical processes responsible for their formation. Specifically, the present-day kinematics of cluster stars, such as rotation and velocity dispersion, seems to be related to the initial configuration of the system. In recent work (Milone et al. 2018), we analyzed for the first time the kinematics of the different stellar populations in NGC0104 (47Tucanae) over a large field of view, exploiting the Gaia Data Release 2 proper motions combined with multi-band ground-based photomet…
A number of studies based on data collected by the $\textit{Hubble Space Telescope}$ ($\textit{HST}$) GO-13297 program "HST Legacy Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters: Shedding UV Light on Their Populations and Formation" have investigated the photometric properties of a large sample of Galactic globular clusters and revolutionized our understanding of their stellar populations. In this paper, we expand previous studies by focusing our attention on the stellar clusters' internal kinematics. We computed proper motions for stars in 56 globular and one open clusters by combining the GO-13297 ima…
We present the results of a spectroscopic survey of Red Giants in the globular cluster Terzan 8 with the aim of studying its kinematics. We derived accurate radial velocities for 82 stars located in the innermost 7 arcmin from the cluster center identifying 48 bona fide cluster members. The kinematics of the cluster have been compared with a set of dynamical models accounting for the effect of mass segregation and a variable fraction of binaries. The derived velocity dispersion appears to be larger than that predicted for mass-segregated stellar systems without binaries, indicating that either…
We combine MUSE spectroscopy and Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet (UV) photometry to perform a study of the chemistry and dynamics of the Galactic globular cluster Messier 80 (M80, NGC 6093). Previous studies have revealed three stellar populations that not only vary in their light-element abundances, but also in their radial distributions, with concentration decreasing with increasing nitrogen enrichment. This remarkable trend, which sets M80 apart from the other Galactic globular clusters, points towards a complex formation and evolutionary history. To better understand how M80 formed and …
We present an improved data-reduction technique to obtain high-precision proper motions (PMs) of globular clusters using Hubble Space Telescope data. The new reduction is superior to the one presented in the first paper of this series for the faintest sources in very crowded fields. We choose the globular cluster NGC 362 as a benchmark to test our new procedures. We measure PMs of 117 450 sources in the field, showing that we are able to obtain a PM precision better than 10 $μ$as yr$^{-1}$ for bright stars. We make use of this new PM catalog of NGC 362 to study the cluster's internal kinematic…
The Phoenix stellar stream has a low intrinsic dispersion in velocity and metallicity that implies the progenitor was probably a low mass globular cluster. In this work we use Magellan/MIKE high-dispersion spectroscopy of eight Phoenix stream red giants to confirm this scenario. In particular, we find negligible intrinsic scatter in metallicity ($σ(\mathrm{[Fe~II/H]}) = 0.04^{+0.11}_{-0.03}$) and a large peak-to-peak range in [Na/Fe] and [Al/Fe] abundance ratios, consistent with the light element abundance patterns seen in the most metal-poor globular clusters. However, unlike any other globul…
We present the analysis of the radial distributions and kinematic properties of the multiple stellar populations (mPOPs) hosted in the globular cluster (GC) NGC 6352 as part of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) "UV Legacy Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters" program. NGC 6352 is one of the few GCs for which the mPOP tagging in appropriate color-magnitude diagrams is clear in all evolutionary sequences. We computed high-precision stellar proper motions for the stars from the cluster's core out to 75 arcsec ($\sim$1.5 core radii, or $\sim$0.6 half-light radii). We find that, in the region explor…
We present multi-object spectroscopic observations of 23 globular cluster candidates (GCCs) in the prototypical megamaser galaxy NGC 4258, carried out with the OSIRIS instrument at the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias. The candidates have been selected based on the ($u^*\ -\ i^\prime$) versus ($i^\prime\ -\ K_s$) diagram, in the first application of the uiks-method to a spiral galaxy. In the spectroscopy presented here, 70% of the candidates are confirmed as globular clusters. Our results validate the efficiency of the uiks-method in the sparser GC systems of spirals, and given the downward cor…
We derived the three-dimensional velocities of individual stars in a sample of 62 Galactic globular clusters using proper motions from the second data release of the Gaia mission together with the most comprehensive set of line-of-sight velocities with the aim of investigating the rotation pattern of these stellar systems. We detect the unambiguous signal of rotation in 15 clusters at amplitudes which are well above the level of random and systematic errors. For these clusters, we derived the position and inclination angle of the rotation axis with respect to the line of sight and the overall …
We report results on the kinematics of Milky Way (MW) globular clusters (GCs) based on updated space velocities for nearly the entire GC population. We found that a 3D space with the semi-major axis, the eccentricity and the inclination of the orbit with respect to the MW plane as its axes is helpful in order to dig into the formation of the GC system. We find that GCs formed in-situ show a clear correlation between their eccentricities and their orbital inclination in the sense that clusters with large eccentricities also have large inclinations. These GCs also show a correlation between thei…
This study constitutes part of a larger effort aimed at better characterizing the Galactic globular clusters (GGCs) located towards the inner Milky Way bulge and disk. Here, we focus on internal kinematics of nine GGCs, obtained from space-based imaging over time baselines of $>$9 years. We exploit multiple avenues to assess the dynamical state of the target GGCs, constructing radial profiles of projected stellar density, proper motion dispersion, and anisotropy. We posit that two-thirds (6/9) of our target GGCs are in an advanced dynamical state, and are close to (or have recently undergone) …
Our understanding of the kinematic properties of multiple stellar populations (mPOPs) in Galactic globular clusters (GCs) is still limited compared to what we know about their chemical and photometric characteristics. Such limitation arises from the lack of a comprehensive observational investigation of this topic. Here we present the first homogeneous kinematic analysis of mPOPs in 56 GCs based on high-precision proper motions computed with Hubble Space Telescope data. We focused on red-giant-branch stars, for which the mPOP tagging is clearer, and measured the velocity dispersion of stars be…
We present a kinematic analysis of the globular cluster systems and diffuse stellar light of four intermediate luminosity (sub-$L^{\ast}$) early-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster based on Gemini/GMOS data. Our galaxy sample is fainter ($-23.8<M_K<-22.7$) than most previous studies, nearly doubling the number of galaxies in this magnitude range that now have GC kinematics. The data for the diffuse light extends to $4R_e$, and the data for the globular clusters reaches 8--$12R_e$. We find that the kinematics in these outer regions are all different despite the fact that these four galaxies have…
Spectroscopy from the final internal data release of the Gaia-ESO Survey (GES) has been combined with Gaia EDR3 to assign membership probabilities to targets observed towards 63 Galactic open clusters and 7 globular clusters. The membership probabilities are based chiefly on maximum likelihood modelling of the 3D kinematics of the targets, separating them into cluster and field populations. From 43211 observed targets, 13985 are identified as highly probable cluster members ($P>0.9$), with an average membership probability of 0.993. The addition of GES radial velocities successfully drives dow…
We present a detailed 3D kinematic analysis of the central regions ($R<30''$) of the low-mass and dynamically evolved galactic globular cluster NGC 6362. The study is based on data obtained with ESO-VLT/MUSE used in combination with the adaptive optics module and providing $\sim3000$ line-of-sight radial velocities, which have been complemented with Hubble Space Telescope proper motions. The quality of the data and the number of available radial velocities allowed us to detect for the first time a significant rotation signal along the line of sight in the cluster core with amplitude of $\sim 1…
In a step toward understanding the origin of the Galactic Halo, we have reexamined Type II Cepheids (T2C) in the field with new input from the second data release (DR2) of Gaia. For 45 T2C with periods from 1 to 20 days, parallaxes, proper motions, and [Fe/H] values are available for 25 stars. Only 5 show [Fe/H] < -1.5, while the remaining stars show thick disk kinematics and [Fe/H] > -0.90. We have compared the T2C stars of the field with their cousins in the globular clusters of the Halo and found that the globular clusters with T2C stars show metallicities and kinematics of a pure Halo popu…
The internal dynamics of multiple stellar populations in Globular Clusters (GCs) provides unique constraints on the physical processes responsible for their formation. Specifically, the present-day kinematics of cluster stars, such as rotation and velocity-dispersion, could be related to the initial configuration of the system. In recent work, we provided the first study of the kinematics of different stellar populations in NGC$\,$0104 over a large field of view in the plane of the sky, exploiting Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) proper motions combined with multi-band ground-based photometry. In thi…
The galactic acceleration scale is imprinted on globular cluster systems of early-type galaxies of most masses and on red and blue globular cluster subpopulations
The formation process of multiple populations in globular clusters is still up for debate. Kinematic differences between the populations are particularly interesting in this respect, because they allow us to distinguish between single-epoch formation scenarios and multi-epoch formation scenarios. We analyze the kinematics of 25 globular clusters and aim to find kinematic differences between multiple populations to constrain their formation process. We split red-giant branch (RGB) stars in each cluster into three populations (P1, P2, P3) for the type-II clusters and two populations (P1 and P2) …
We review our recent studies of the globular cluster system of NGC 5128. First, we have obtained low-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectroscopy of 72 globular clusters using Gemini-S/GMOS to obtain the ages, metallicities, and the level of alpha enrichment of the metal-poor and metal-rich globular cluster subpopulations. Second, we have explored the rotational signature and velocity dispersion of the galaxy's halo using over 560 globular clusters with radial velocity measurements. We have also compared the dependence of these properties on galactocentric distance and globular cluster age an…
Dynamical evolution drives globular clusters toward core collapse, which strongly shapes their internal properties. Diagnostics of core collapse have so far been based on photometry only, namely on the study of the concentration of the density profiles. Here we present a new method to robustly identify core-collapsed clusters based on the study of their stellar kinematics. We introduce the \textit{kinematic concentration} parameter, $c_k$, the ratio between the global and local degree of energy equipartition reached by a cluster, and show through extensive direct $N$-body simulations that clus…
The outer regions of globular clusters can enable us to answer many fundamental questions concerning issues ranging from the formation and evolution of clusters and their multiple stellar populations to the study of stars near and beyond the hydrogen-burning limit and to the dynamics of the Milky Way. The outskirts of globular clusters are still uncharted territories observationally. A very efficient way to explore them is through high-precision proper motions of low-mass stars over a large field of view. The Wide Field InfraRed Survey Telescope (WFIRST) combines all these characteristics in a…
Numerous observational studies have revealed the ubiquitous presence of multiple stellar populations in globular clusters and cast many hard challenges for the study of the formation and dynamical history of these stellar systems. In this Letter we present the results of a study of the kinematic properties of multiple populations in NGC 2808 based on high-precision Hubble Space Telescope proper-motion measurements. In a recent study, Milone et al. have identified five distinct populations (A, B, C, D, and E) in NGC 2808. Populations D and E coincide with the helium-enhanced populations in the …
A comprehensive statistical analysis of the relationship between the chemical and spatially kinematic parameters of the globular clusters of the Galaxy has been performed. The data of the author's compilation catalog contain astrophysical parameters for 157 clusters and the relative abundances of α-elements for 69 clusters. For 121 clusters, the data are supplemented by spatially kinematic parameters taken from the literature. The phenomenon of reddening of horizontal branches of low-metal accreted globular clusters is discussed. We consider the contradiction between the criteria for clusters …
We propose that the rotational kinematics of the globular cluster system (GCS) in M31 can result from a past major merger event that could have formed its bulge component. We numerically investigate kinematical properties of globular clusters (GCs) in remnants of galaxy mergers between two disks with GCs in both their disk and halo components. We find that the GCS formed during major merging can show strongly rotational kinematics with the maximum rotational velocities of 140 - 170 km/s for a certain range of orbital parameters of merging. We also find that a rotating stellar bar, which can be…
We report results of proper motions of 15 known Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) old globular clusters (GCs) derived from the Gaia DR2 data sets. When these mean proper motions are gathered with existent radial velocity measurements to compose the GCs' velocity vectors, we found that the projection of the velocity vectors onto the LMC plane and those perpendicular to it tell us about two distinct kinematic GC populations. Such a distinction becomes clear if the GCs are split at a perpendicular velocity of 10 km/s (absolute value). The two different kinematic groups also exhibit different spatial d…
We present kinematical analyses of 22 Galactic globular clusters using the Hubble Space Telescope proper motion (HSTPROMO) catalogues recently presented in Bellini et al. (2014). For most clusters, this is the first proper-motion study ever performed, and, for many, this is the most detailed kinematic study of any kind. We use cleaned samples of bright stars to determine binned velocity-dispersion and velocity-anisotropy radial profiles and two-dimensional velocity-dispersion spatial maps. Using these profiles, we search for correlations between cluster kinematics and structural properties. We…
We use spectra observed with the integral-field spectrograph MUSE to reveal the central kinematics of the Galactic globular cluster Messier 80 (M80, NGC 6093). Using observations obtained with the recently commissioned narrow-field mode of MUSE, we are able to analyse 932 stars in the central 7.5 arcsec by 7.5 arcsec of the cluster for which no useful spectra previously existed. Mean radial velocities of individual stars derived from the spectra are compared to predictions from axisymmetric Jeans models, resulting in radial profiles of the velocity dispersion, the rotation amplitude, and the m…
As part of the ESO-VLT Multi-Instrument Kinematic Survey (MIKiS) of Galactic globular clusters, we present a detailed investigation of the internal kinematics of NGC 5986. The analysis is based on about 300 individual radial velocities of stars located at various distances from the cluster center, up to 300 arcseconds (about 4 half-mass radii). Our analysis reveals the presence of a solid-body rotation extending from the cluster center to the outermost regions probed by the data, and a velocity dispersion profile initially declining with the distance from the cluster's center, but flattening a…
We computed proper motions of a selected sample of globular clusters projected on the central bulge, employing CCD images gathered along the last 25 years at the ESO-NTT, ESO-Danish and HST telescopes. We presented a method to derive their proper motions, and a set of coordinate transformations to obtain 3D Galactic velocity vectors of the clusters. We analysed 10 globular clusters, namely Terzan 1, Terzan 2, Terzan 4, Terzan 9, NGC 6522, NGC 6558, NGC 6540, AL~3,ESO456--SC38 and Palomar 6. For comparison purposes we also studied the outer bulge cluster NGC 6652. We discuss the general propert…
We employ Gaia DR2 proper motions for 151 Milky Way globular clusters from Vasiliev (2019) in tandem with distances and line-of-sight velocities to derive their kinematical properties. To assign clusters to the Milky Way thick disk, bulge, and halo we follow the approach of Posti et al. (2018) who distinguished among different Galactic stellar components using stars's orbits. In particular, we use the ratio $L_{z}/e$, the $Z$ projection of the angular momentum to the eccentricity, as population tracer, which we complement with chemical abundances extracted from the literature and Monte-Carlo s…
Interesting chemically peculiar field stars may reflect their stellar evolution history and their possible origin in a different environment from where they are found now, which is one of the most important research fields in Galactic archaeology. To explore this further, we have used the CN-CH bands around 4000 A to identify N-rich metal-poor field stars in LAMOST DR3. Here we expand our N-rich metal-poor field star sample to ~100 stars in LAMOST DR5, where 53 of them are newly found in this work. We investigate light elements of the common stars between our sample and APOGEE DR14. While Mg, …
We discuss constraints on the formation of multiple populations in globular clusters (GCs) imposed by their present-day kinematics (velocity dispersion and anisotropy) and spatial distribution. We argue that the observational evidence collected so far in the outer parts of clusters is generally consistent with an enriched population forming more centrally concentrated compared to the primordial population, in agreement with all the scenarios proposed to date (in some cases by design), but not sufficient to favour a particular scenario. We highlight that the differential rotation of subpopulati…
A catalog of Galactic globular clusters has been compiled and used to analyze relations between the chemical and kinematic parameters of the clusters. The catalog contains positions, distances, luminosities, metallicites, and horizontal-branch morphology indices for 157~globular clusters, as well as space velocities for 72~globular clusters. For 69~globular clusters, these data are suppleented with the relative abundances of 28~chemical elements produced in various nuclear-synthesis processes, taken from 101~papers published between 1986 and 2018. The tendency for redder horizontal branches in…
Finding an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) in a globular cluster (GC), or proving its absence, is a crucial ingredient in our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. The challenge is to identify a unique signature of an IMBH that cannot be accounted for by other processes. Observational claims of IMBH detection are often based on analyses of the kinematics of stars, such as a rise in the velocity dispersion profile towards the centre. In this contribution we discuss the degeneracy between this IMBH signal and pressure anisotropy in the GC. We show that that by considering anisotro…
We have developed a novel technique based on a clustering algorithm which searches for kinematically- and chemically-clustered stars in the APOGEE DR12 Cannon data. As compared to classical chemical tagging, the kinematic information included in our methodology allows us to identify stars that are members of known globular clusters with greater confidence. We apply our algorithm to the entire APOGEE catalog of 150,615 stars whose chemical abundances are derived by the Cannon. Our methodology found anti-correlations between the elements Al and Mg, Na and O, and C and N previously identified in …
Globular clusters (GCs) are old massive star clusters that serve as `fossils' of galaxy formation. The advent of Gaia observatory has enabled detailed kinematics studies of the Galactic GCs and revolutionized our understanding of the connections between GC properties and galaxy assembly. However, lack of kinematic measurements of extragalactic GCs limits the sample size of GC systems that we can fully study. In this work, we present a model for GC formation and evolution, which includes positional and kinematic information of individual GCs by assigning them to particles in the Illustris TNG50…
To investigate the dynamical properties of globular clusters, the surface brightness and kinematic data were collected and fitted to a family of lowered isothermal models called LIMEPY models. For 18 studied globular clusters, the amounts of concentration, truncation, and anisotropy were determined. In addition, the cluster mass, half-mass radius, distance, and mass-to-light ratio were also obtained. In general, LIMEPY models could describe these clusters well. Among these 18 clusters, NGC 5139, NGC 6388, and NGC 7078 were claimed to be candidates to host intermediate-mass black holes in liter…
We make use of the Hubble Space Telescope proper-motion catalogs derived by Bellini et al. (2014) to produce the first radial velocity-dispersion profiles sigma(R) for blue straggler stars (BSSs) in Galactic globular clusters (GCs), as well as the first dynamical estimates for the average mass of the entire BSS population. We show that BSSs typically have lower velocity dispersions than stars with mass equal to the main-sequence turnoff mass, as one would expect for a more massive population of stars. Since GCs are expected to experience some degree of energy equipartition, we use the relation…
We have obtained radial velocity measurements for 51 new globular clusters around the Sombrero galaxy. These measurements were obtained using spectroscopic observations from the AAOmega spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope and the Hydra spectrograph at WIYN. Combined with our own past measurements and velocity measurements obtained from the literature we have constructed a large database of radial velocities that contains a total of 360 confirmed globular clusters. Previous studies' analyses of the kinematics and mass profile of the Sombrero globular cluster system have been constrai…
The detection of intermediate mass black holes in the centres of globular clusters is highly controversial, as complementary observational methods often deliver significantly different results. In order to understand these discrepancies, we develop a procedure to simulate integral field unit (IFU) observations of globular clusters: Simulating IFU Star Cluster Observations (SISCO). The input of our software are realistic dynamical models of globular clusters that are then converted in a spectral data cube. We apply SISCO to Monte Carlo cluster simulations from Downing et al. (2010), with a real…
Using the data from Gaia (ESA) Data Release 2 we performed the orbital calculations of globular clusters (GCs) of the Milky Way. To explore possible close encounters (or collisions) between the GCs, using our own developed high-order phi-GRAPE code, we integrated backward and forward the orbits of 119 objects with reliable positions and proper motions. In calculations, we adopted a realistic axisymmetric Galactic potential (bulge + disk + halo). Using different impact conditions, we found four pairs of the six GCs that may have experienced an encounter within twice the sum of the half-mass rad…
We present a detailed analysis of the kinematics of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6397 based on more than ~18,000 spectra obtained with the novel integral field spectrograph MUSE. While NGC 6397 is often considered a core collapse cluster, our analysis suggests a flattening of the surface brightness profile at the smallest radii. Although it is among the nearest globular clusters, the low velocity dispersion of NGC 6397 of <5km/s imposes heavy demands on the quality of the kinematical data. We show that despite its limited spectral resolution, MUSE reaches an accuracy of 1km/s in the analy…
Star cluster complexes such as the Carina Nebula can have formed in turbulent giant molecular clouds. We perform a series of $N$-body simulations starting from subclustering initial conditions based on hydrodynamic simulations of turbulent molecular clouds. These simulations finally result in the formation of star cluster complexes consisting of several subclusters (clumps). We obtain the inter-clump velocity distribution, the size of the region, and the mass of the most massive cluster in our simulated complex and compare the results with observed ones (the Carina Nebula and NGC 2264). The on…
We carry out a joint spatial-kinematical-metallicity analysis of globular clusters (GCs) around the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), using a homogeneous, high-quality spectroscopic dataset. In particular, we remove the contaminating young clusters that have plagued many previous analyses. We find that the clusters can be divided into three major metallicity groups based on their radial distributions: (1) an inner metal-rich group ([Fe/H] > -0.4), (2) a group with intermediate metallicity (with median [Fe/H]=-1), (3) and a metal-poor group, with [Fe/H] < -1.5. The metal-rich group has kinematics and spa…
Context: Clumpy disk galaxies in the distant universe, at redshift of z>1, have been observed to host several giant clumps in their disks. They are thought to correspond to early formative stages of disk galaxies. On the other hand, halo objects, such as old globular clusters and halo stars, are likely to consist of the oldest stars in a galaxy (age>10 Gyr), therefore the clumpy disk formation can be presumed to take place in a pre-existing halo system. Aims: Giant clumps are orbiting in the same direction in a premature disk and so massive that they may be expected to interact gravitationally…
Based upon the kinematics of ten globular clusters, it has recently been claimed that the ultra-diffuse galaxy, NCD 1052-DF2, lacks a significant quantity of dark matter. Dynamical analyses have generally assumed that this galaxy is pressure supported, with the relatively small velocity dispersion of the globular cluster population indicating the deficit of dark matter. However, the presence of a significant rotation of the globular cluster population could substantially modify this conclusion. Here we present the discovery of such a signature of rotation in the kinematics of NGC 1052-DF2's gl…

NGC 4473 is a so--called double sigma (2$σ$) galaxy, i.e. a galaxy with rare, double peaks in its 2D stellar velocity dispersion. Here, we present the globular cluster (GC) kinematics in NGC 4473 out to $\sim10\,R_e$ (effective radii) using data from combined HST/ACS and Subaru/Suprime--Cam imaging and Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopy. We find that the 2$σ$ nature of NGC 4473 persists up to 3 $R_e$, though it becomes misaligned to the photometric major axis. We also observe a significant offset between the stellar and GC rotation amplitudes. This offset can be understood as a co--addition of counter--…
