Four-dimensional gauge theories with matter can have regions in parameter space, often dubbed conformal windows, where they flow in the infrared to non-trivial conformal field theories. It has been conjectured that conformality can be lost because of merging of two nearby fixed points that move into the complex plane, and that a walking dynamics governed by scaling dimensions of operators defined at such complex fixed points can occur. We find controlled, parametrically weakly coupled, and ultraviolet-complete 4D gauge theories that explicitly realize this scenario. We show how the walking dynamics is controlled by the coupling of a double-trace operator that crosses marginality. The walking regime ends when the renormalization group flow of this coupling leads to a (weak) first-order phase transition with Coleman-Weinberg symmetry breaking. A light dilaton-like scalar particle appears in the spectrum, but it is not parametrically lighter than the other excitations.
The classical conformality is one of the possible candidates for explaining the gauge hierarchy of the Standard Model. We show that it is naturally obtained from the Coleman's theory on baby universe.
It has been recently proposed to embed the standard model in a conformal gauge theory to resolve the hierarchy problem, and to avoid assuming either grand unification or low-energy supersymmetry. By model building based on string-field duality we show how to maintain the successful prediction of an electroweak mixing angle with $sin^2θ\simeq 0.231$ in conformal gauge theories with three chiral families.
If the standard model is embedded in a conformal theory, what is the simplest possibility? We analyse all abelian orbifolds for discrete symmetry $Z_p$ with $p \leq 7$, and find that the simplest such theory is indeed $SU(3)^7$. Such a theory predicts the correct electroweak unification (sin$^2 θ\simeq 0.231$). A color coupling $α_C(M) \simeq 0.07$ suggests a conformal scale $M$ near to 10 TeV.
We identify a property of renormalizable SU(N)/U(1) gauge theories, the intrinsic Conformality ($iCF$), which underlies the scale invariance of physical observables and leads to a remarkably efficient method to solve the conventional renormalization scale ambiguity at every order in pQCD: the PMC$_\infty$. This new method reflects the underlying conformal properties displayed by pQCD at NNLO, eliminates the scheme dependence of pQCD predictions and is consistent with the general properties of the PMC (Principle of Maximum Conformality). We introduce a new method to identify conformal and $β$-t…
This review describes the conformality approach to extending the standard model of particle phenomenology using an assumption of no conformal anomaly at high energy. Topics include quiver gauge theory, the conformality approach to phenomenology, strong-electroweak unification at 4 TeV, cancellation of quadratic divergences, cancellation of U(1) anomalies, and a dark matter candidate.
An outline of the conformality approach to the gauge hierarchy is given including the use of non-abelian orbifolds to give unified models of the left-right type.
We discuss properties of non-Abelian gauge theories that change significantly across the lower edge of the conformal window. Their probes are the topological observables, the meson spectrum and the scalar glueball operator. The way these quantities change tells about the way conformal symmetry is lost.
Abelian quiver gauge theories provide nonsupersymmetric candidates for the conformality approach to physics beyond the standard model. Written as ${\cal N}=0$, $U(N)^n$ gauge theories, however, they have mixed $U(1)_p U(1)_q^2$ and $U(1)_p SU(N)_q^2$ triangle anomalies. It is shown how to construct explicitly a compensatory term $Δ{\cal L}_{comp}$ which restores gauge invariance of ${\cal L}_{eff} = {\cal L} + Δ{\cal L}_{comp}$ under $U(N)^n$. It can lead to a negative contribution to the U(1) $β$-function and hence to one-loop conformality at high energy for all dimensionless couplings.
In this talk I review some aspects of the idea that there is an infra-red conformal fixed-point at the TeV scale. In particular, it is shown how gauge coupling unification can be achieved by TeV unification in a semi-simple gauge group.
By use of the AdS/CFT correspondence on orbifolds, models are derived which can contain the standard model of particle phenomenology. It will be assumed that the theory becomes conformally invariant at a renormalization-group fixed-point in the TeV region. A recent application to TeV unification is briefly mentioned.
A key problem in making precise perturbative QCD predictions is the uncertainty in determining the renormalization scale $μ$ of the running coupling $α_s(μ^2).$ The purpose of the running coupling in any gauge theory is to sum all terms involving the $β$ function; in fact, when the renormalization scale is set properly, all non-conformal $β\ne 0$ terms in a perturbative expansion arising from renormalization are summed into the running coupling. The remaining terms in the perturbative series are then identical to that of a conformal theory; i.e., the corresponding theory with $β=0$. The result…
We show that the gamma_i-deformation, which was proposed as candidate gauge theory for a non-supersymmetric three-parameter deformation of the AdS/CFT correspondence, is not conformally invariant due to a running double-trace coupling - not even in the 't Hooft limit. Moreover, this non-conformality cannot be cured when we extend the theory by adding at tree-level arbitrary multi-trace couplings that obey certain minimal consistency requirements. Our findings suggest a possible connection between this breakdown of conformal invariance and a puzzling divergence recently encountered in the integ…
We investigate the thermodynamic and transport properties of the real scalar field theory at weak as well as strong couplings in the Hartree approximation of Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis (CJT) formalism. To our surprise, we find that near phase transition, all the thermodynamic and transport properties of the simplest real scalar model at certain strong coupling agree well with the lattice results of the complex QCD system. We also demonstrate that the system near phase transition is non-conformal, and behaves as a non-perfect fluid.
We consider zero-temperature transitions from conformal to non-conformal phases in quantum theories. We argue that there are three generic mechanisms for the loss of conformality in any number of dimensions: (i) fixed point goes to zero coupling, (ii) fixed point runs off to infinite coupling, or (iii) an IR fixed point annihilates with a UV fixed point and they both disappear into the complex plane. We give both relativistic and non-relativistic examples of the last case in various dimensions and show that the critical behavior of the mass gap behaves similarly to the correlation length in th…
Multi-critical point principle (MPP) is one of the interesting theoretical possibilities that can explain the fine-tuning problems of the Universe. It simply claims that "the coupling constants of a theory are tuned to one of the multi-critical points, where some of the extrema of the effective potential are degenerate." One of the simplest examples is the vanishing of the second derivative of the effective potential around a minimum. This corresponds to the so-called classical conformality, because it implies that the renormalized mass $m^2$ vanishes. More generally, the form of the effective…
We show that the anomalous dimension $γ_G$ of the scalar glueball operator contains information on the mechanism that leads to the onset of conformality at the lower edge of the conformal window in a non-Abelian gauge theory. In particular, it distinguishes whether the merging of an UV and an IR fixed point -- the simplest mechanism associated to a conformal phase transition and preconformal scaling -- does or does not occur. At the same time, we shed light on new analogies between QCD and its supersymmetric version. In SQCD, we derive an exact relation between $γ_G$ and the mass anomalous dim…
A key problem in making precise perturbative QCD (pQCD) predictions is how to set the renormalization scale of the running coupling unambiguously at each finite order. The elimination of the uncertainty in setting the renormalization scale in pQCD will greatly increase the precision of collider tests of the Standard Model and the sensitivity to new phenomena. Renormalization group invariance requires that predictions for observables must also be independent on the choice of the renormalization scheme. The well-known Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie (BLM) approach cannot be easily extended beyond next-…
Use of the AdS/CFT correspondence to arrive at phenomenological gauge field theories is discussed, focusing on the orbifolded case without supersymmetry. An abelian orbifold with the finite group Z_p can give rise to a G = U(N)^p gauge group with chiral fermions and complex scalars in different bi-fundamental representations of G. The naturalness issue is discussed, particularly the absence of quadratic divergences in the scalar propagator at one loop. This requires that the scalars all be in bi-fundamentals with no adjoints, coincident with the necessary and sufficient condition for presence …
We review the hot QCD transition with varying number of flavors, from two till the onset of the conformal window. We discuss the universality class for $N_f=2$, along the critical line for two massless light flavors, and a third flavor whose mass serves as an interpolator between $N_f = 2$ and $N_f=3$. We identify a possible scaling window for the 3D $O(4)$ universality class transition, and its crossover to a mean field behaviour. We follow the transition from $N_f=3$ to larger $N_f$, when it remains of first order, with an increasing coupling strength; we summarize its known properties, incl…
We study the famous example of weakly first order phase transitions in the 1+1D quantum Q-state Potts model at Q>4. We numerically show that these weakly first order transitions have approximately conformal invariance. Specifically, we find entanglement entropy on considerably large system sizes fits perfectly with the universal scaling law of this quantity in the conformal field theories (CFTs). This supports that the weakly first order transitions is proximate to complex fixed points, which are described by recent conjectured complex CFTs. Moreover, the central charge extracted from this fit…
We study aspects of the conformality to confinement transition for non-supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with fermions in arbitrary chiral or vectorlike representations. We use the presence or absence of mass gap for gauge fluctuations as an identifier of the infrared behavior. Present-day understanding does not allow the mass gap for gauge fluctuations to be computed on R*4. However, recent progress allows its non-perturbative computation on R*3xS*1 by using either the twisted partition function or deformation theory, for a range of S*1 sizes depending on the theory. For small number of ferm…
We study QCD-like four dimensional theories in the theoretically controlled framework of deformation theory and/or twisted partition function on S*1 x R*3. By using duality, we show that a class of one-flavor theories exhibit new physical phenomena: discrete chiral symmetry breaking induced by the condensation of topological disorder operators, and confinement and the generation of mass gap due to new non-selfdual topological excitations. In the R*4 limit, we argue that the mass gap disappears, the chiral symmetry breaking vacua are of runaway type, and the theory flows to a CFT. We also study…
We perform a lattice study of the topological susceptibility and instanton size distribution of the $\su{2}$ gauge theory with two adjoint Dirac fermions (also known as Minimal Walking Technicolor), which is known to be in the conformal window. In the theory deformed with a small mass term, by drawing a comparison with the pure gauge theory, we find that topological observables are decoupled from the fermion dynamics. This provides further evidence for the infrared conformality of the theory. A study of the instanton size distribution shows that this quantity can be used to detect the onset of…
The Sachdev--Ye--Kitaev is a quantum mechanical model of $N$ Majorana fermions which displays a number of appealing features -- solvability in the strong coupling regime, near-conformal invariance and maximal chaos -- which make it a suitable model for black holes in the context of the AdS/CFT holography. In this paper, we show for the colored SYK model and several of its tensor model cousins that the next-to-leading order in the large $N$ expansion preserves the conformal invariance of the $2$-point function in the strong coupling regime, up to the contribution of the pseudo-Goldstone bosons …
We study the IR phase of three dimensional quantum electrodynamics (QED$_3$) coupled to $N_f=2$ flavors of two-component Dirac fermions, which has been controversial for decades. This theory has been proposed to be self-dual with symmetry enhancement $(SU(2)_f\times U(1)_t )/\mathbb{Z}_2\rightarrow O(4)$ at the IR fixed point. We focus on the four-point correlator of monopole operators with unit topological charge of $U(1)_t$. We illustrate the $O(4)\rightarrow SU(2)_f\times U(1)_t $ branching rules based on an $O(4)$ symmetric positive structure in the monopole four-point crossing equations. …
Scheme-independent determination of the QCD running coupling at all scales from jet observables using the principle of maximum conformality and infinite-order scale setting
This paper addresses the question of whether there are 4D Lorentz invariant unitary quantum field theories with scale invariance but not conformal invariance. An important loophole in the arguments of Luty-Polchinski-Rattazzi and Dymarsky-Komargodski-Schwimmer-Theisen is that trace of the energy-momentum tensor $T$ could be a generalized free field. In this paper we rule out this possibility. The key ingredient is the observation that a unitary theory with scale but not conformal invariance necessarily has a non-vanishing anomaly for global scale transformations. We show that this anomaly cann…
The electromagnetic response of topological insulators and superconductors is governed by a modified set of Maxwell equations that derive from a topological Chern-Simons (CS) term in the effective Lagrangian with coupling constant $κ$. Here we consider a topological superconductor or, equivalently, an Abelian Higgs model in $2+1$ dimensions with a global $O(2N)$ symmetry in the presence of a CS term, but without a Maxwell term. At large $κ$, the gauge field decouples from the complex scalar field, leading to a quantum critical behavior in the $O(2N)$ universality class. When the Higgs field is…
We study the holographic Dynamic AdS/QCD description of a SU($N_c$) non-abelian gauge theory with $N_f$ fermions in the fundamental representation which also have Nambu-Jona-Lasinio interactions included using Witten's multi-trace prescription. In particular here we study aspects of the dynamics in and near the conformal window of the gauge theory as described by the two loop running of the gauge theory. If the number of flavours is such that the IR fixed point lies with the anomalous dimension, $γ$, of the quark bilinear above one then chiral symmetry breaking occurs. Here we display a spiral…
In contrast to the folklore that Technicolor (TC) is a "Higgsless theory", we shall discuss existence of a composite Higgs boson, Techni-Dilaton (TD), a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson of the scale invariance in the Scale-invariant/Walking/Conformal TC (SWC TC) which generates a large anomalous dimension $γ_m \simeq 1$ in a wide region from the dynamical mass $m$ $= {\cal O}$ (TeV) of the techni-fermion all the way up to the intrinsic scale $Λ_{\rm TC}$ of the SWC TC (analogue of $Λ_{\rm QCD}$), where $Λ_{\rm TC} $ is taken typically as the scale of the Extended TC scale $Λ_{\rm ETC}$: $Λ_{\rm TC…
Slowly walking technicolor models provide a mechanism for electroweak symmetry breaking whose nonperturbative lattice investigation is rather challenging. Here we demonstrate walking near a conformal fixed point considering the 2-d lattice O(3) model at vacuum angle $θ\approx π$. The essential features of walking technicolor models are shared by this toy model and can be accurately investigated by numerical simulations. We show results for the running coupling and the beta-function and we perform a finite size scaling analysis of the massgap close to the conformal point.
In this study, the gauge/string duality is used to investigate the dynamics of a moving heavy quark in a strongly coupled, non-conformal plasma. The drag force in this non-conformal model is smaller than that of $\mathcal{N} = 4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) plasma and decreases as the level of non-conformality is increased. At intermediate temperatures, the world-sheet temperature, which is derived numerically by calculating the world-sheet horizon, deviates from its conformal value, but at high temperatures, it tends to its conformal value.
We extend our previous analysis of holographic heavy ion collisions in non-conformal theories. We provide a detailed description of our numerical code. We study collisions at different energies in gauge theories with different degrees of non-conformality. We compare four relaxation times: the hydrodynamization time (when hydrodynamics becomes applicable), the EoSization time (when the average pressure approaches its equilibrium value), the isotropization time (when the longitudinal and transverse pressures approach each other) and the condensate relaxation time (when the expectation value of a…
Fisher zeros are the zeros of the partition function in the complex beta=2N_c/g^2 plane. When they pinch the real axis, finite size scaling allows one to distinguish between first and second order transition and to estimate exponents. On the other hand, a gap signals confinement and the method can be used to explore the boundary of the conformal window. We present recent numerical results for 2D O(N) sigma models, 4D U(1) and SU(2) pure gauge and SU(3) gauge theory with N_f=4 and 12 flavors. We discuss attempts to understand some of these results using analytical methods. We discuss the 2-latt…

We investigate the effects of four-fermion interactions on the phase diagram of strongly interacting theories for any representation as function of the number of colors and flavors. We show that the conformal window, for any representation, shrinks with respect to the case in which the four-fermion interactions are neglected. The anomalous dimension of the mass increases beyond the unity value at the lower boundary of the new conformal window. We plot the new phase diagram which can be used, together with the information about the anomalous dimension, to propose ideal models of walking technic…
We investigate the structure and the novel emerging features of the mesonic non-singlet spectrum of the Minimal Walking Technicolor (MWT) theory. Precision measurements in the nonsinglet pseudoscalar and vector channels are compared to the expectations for an IR-conformal field theory and a QCD-like theory. Our results favor a scenario in which MWT is (almost) conformal in the infrared, while spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking seems less plausible.
We study the implications of scale invariance in four-dimensional quantum field theories. Imposing unitarity, we find that infinitely many matrix elements vanish in a suitable kinematical configuration. This vanishing is a nontrivial necessary condition for conformality. We provide an argument why this is expected to be a sufficient condition as well, thereby linking scale and conformal invariance in unitary theories. We also discuss possible exceptions to our argument.
We revisit the long-standing conjecture that in unitary field theories, scale invariance implies conformality. We explain why the Zamolodchikov-Polchinski proof in D=2 does not work in higher dimensions. We speculate which new ideas might be helpful in a future proof. We also search for possible counterexamples. We consider a general multi-field scalar-fermion theory with quartic and Yukawa interactions. We show that there are no counterexamples among fixed points of such models in 4-epsilon dimensions. We also discuss fake counterexamples, which exist among theories without a stress tensor.
We discuss walking behavior in gauge theories and weak first-order phase transitions in statistical physics. Despite appearing in very different systems (QCD below the conformal window, the Potts model, deconfined criticality) these two phenomena both imply approximate scale invariance in a range of energies and have the same RG interpretation: a flow passing between pairs of fixed point at complex coupling. We discuss what distinguishes a real theory from a complex theory and call these fixed points complex CFTs. By using conformal perturbation theory we show how observables of the walking th…
A toy model is proposed for four dimensional non-abelian gauge theories coupled to a large number of fermionic degrees of freedom. As the number of flavors is varied the gauge theory may be confining, walking or conformal. The toy model mimicking this feature is the two dimensional O(3) sigma model with a theta-term. For all theta the model is asymptotically free. For small theta the model is confining in the infra red, for theta = pi the model has a non-trivial infra red fixed point and consequently for theta slightly below pi the coupling walks. The first step in investigating the notoriousl…
We derive an estimate of the lower boundary of the conformal window of SP(2N) and SO(N) gauge theories with fermionic matter in several different representations. We calculate the index of topological excitations for these groups on the manifold R3 * S1, from which we deduce the scale of the generation of the mass gap of the theory. This is then used to approximate the critical value of the number of species for the onset of conformality on R4. We also provide a detailed comparison with other estimates of the conformal window.
