In joint work with Elmanto, Hoyois, Khan and Sosnilo, we computed infinite $\mathbb{P}^1$-loop spaces of motivic Thom spectra, using the technique of framed correspondences. This result allows us to express non-negative $\mathbb{G}_m$-homotopy groups of motivic Thom spectra in terms of geometric generators and relations. Using this explicit description, we show that the unit map of the algebraic special linear cobordism spectrum induces an isomorphism on $\mathbb{G}_m$-homotopy sheaves.
Based on the algebraic cobordism theory of Levine and Morel, we develop a theory of algebraic cobordism modulo algebraic equivalence. We prove that this theory can reproduce Chow groups modulo algebraic equivalence and the semi-topological $K_0$-groups. We also show that with finite coefficients, this theory agrees with the algebraic cobordism theory. We compute our cobordism theory for some low dimensional varieties. The results on infinite generation of some Griffiths groups by Clemens and on smash-nilpotence by Voevodsky and Voisin are also lifted and reinterpreted in terms of this cobordis…
In this paper we study the structure of the Algebraic Cobordism ring of a variety as a module over the Lazard ring, and show that it has relations in positive codimensions. We actually prove the stronger graded version. This extends the result of M.Levine-F.Morel claiming that this module has generators in non-negative codimensions. As an application we compute the Algebraic Cobordism ring of a curve. The main tool is Symmetric Operations in Algebraic Cobordism.
We construct a cohomology theory using quasi-smooth derived schemes as generators and an analogue of the bordism relation using derived fibre products as relations. This theory has pull-backs along all morphisms between smooth schemes independent of any characteristic assumptions. We prove that in characteristic zero, the resulting theory agrees with algebraic cobordism as defined by Levine and Morel. We thus obtain a new set of generators and relations for algebraic cobordism.
In this article we construct Symmetric operations for all primes (previously known only for p=2). These unstable operations are more subtle than the Landweber-Novikov operations, and encode all p-primary divisibilities of characteristic numbers. Thus, taken together (for all primes) they plug the gap left by the Hurewitz map L ---> Z[b_1,b_2,...], providing an important structure on Algebraic Cobordism. Applications include: questions of rationality of Chow group elements - see [11], and the structure of the Graded Algebraic Cobordism. We also construct Steenrod operations of T.tom Dieck-style…
We define a notion of Fourier-Mukai transform on algebraic cobordism cycles with $\mathbb{Q}$-coefficients on an abelian variety. We use this to produce a Beauville decomposition of algebraic cobordism and study its consequences, including a decomposition of the cobordism motive of an abelian variety.
In this paper we investigate the structure of algebraic cobordism of Levine-Morel as a module over the Lazard ring with the action of Landweber-Novikov and symmetric operations on it. We show that the associated graded groups of algebraic cobordism with respect to the topological filtration $Ω^*_{(r)}(X)$ are unions of finitely presented $\mathbb{L}$-modules of very specific structure. Namely, these submodules possess a filtration such that the corresponding factors are either free or isomorphic to cyclic modules $\mathbb{L}/I(p,n)x$ where $\mathrm{deg\ } x\ge \frac{p^n-1}{p-1}$. As a corollar…
We define a cobordism theory in algebraic geometry based on normal crossing degenerations with double point singularities. The main result is the equivalence of double point cobordism to the theory of algebraic cobordism previously defined by Levine and Morel. Double point cobordism provides a simple, geometric presentation of algebraic cobordism theory. As a corollary, the Lazard ring given by products of projective spaces rationally generates all nonsingular projective varieties modulo double point degenerations. Double point degenerations arise naturally in relative Donaldson-Thomas theory.…
We compute the motivic homotopy groups of algebraic cobordism over number fields, the motivic homotopy groups of 2-complete algebraic cobordism over the real numbers and rings of $2$-integers and the motivic homotopy groups of mod 2 motivic Morava $K$-theory over fields with low virtual cohomological dimension. As an application we relate the order of the algebraic cobordism groups of rings of 2-integers to special values of Dedekind $ζ$-functions of totally real abelian number fields.
The double point relation defines a natural theory of algebraic cobordism for bundles on varieties. We construct a simple basis (over the rationals) of the corresponding cobordism groups over Spec(C) for all dimensions of varieties and ranks of bundles. The basis consists of split bundles over products of projective spaces. Moreover, we prove the full theory for bundles on varieties is an extension of scalars of standard algebraic cobordism.
We provide several ingredients towards a generalization of the Littlewood-Richardson rule from Chow groups to algebraic cobordism. In particular, we prove a simple product-formula for multiplying classes of smooth Schubert varieties with any Bott-Samelson class in algebraic cobordism of the grassmannian. We also establish some results for generalized Schubert polynomials for hyperbolic formal group laws.
We prove a formula for the push-forward class of Bott-Samelson resolutions in the algebraic cobordism ring of the flag bundle. We then provide a geometric interpretation to the double beta-polynomials of Fomin and Kirillov by specializing our formula to the case of connected K-theory.
We extend the derived Algebraic bordism of Lowrey and Schürg to a bivariant theory in the sense of Fulton and MacPherson, and establish some of its basic properties. As a special case, we obtain a completely new theory of cobordism rings of singular quasi-projective schemes. The extended cobordism is shown to specialize to algebraic $K^0$ analogously to Conner-Floyd theorem in topology. We also give a candidate for the correct definition of Chow rings of singular schemes.
We define and study the notion of numerical equivalence on algebraic cobordism cycles. We prove that algebraic cobordism modulo numerical equivalence is a finitely generated module over the Lazard ring, and it reproduces the Chow group modulo numerical equivalence. We show this theory defines an oriented Borel-Moore homology theory on schemes and oriented cohomology theory on smooth varieties. We compare it with homological equivalence and smash-equivalence for cobordism cycles. For the former, we show that homological equivalence on algebraic cobordism is strictly finer than numerical equival…
We describe all operations from a theory A^* obtained from Algebraic Cobordism of M.Levine-F.Morel by change of coefficients to any oriented cohomology theory B^* (in the case of a field of characteristic zero). We prove that such an operation can be reconstructed out of it's action on the products of projective spaces. This reduces the construction of operations to algebra and extends the additive case done earlier, as well as the topological one obtained by T.Kashiwabara. The key new ingredients which permit us to treat the non-additive operations are: the use of "poly-operations" and the "D…
We construct and study a theory of bivariant cobordism of derived schemes. Our theory provides a vast generalization of the algebraic bordism theory of characteristic 0 algebraic schemes, constructed earlier by Levine and Morel, and a (partial) non-$\Ab^1$-invariant refinement of the motivic cohomology theory $MGL$ in Morel--Voevodsky's stable motivic homotopy theory. Our main result is that bivariant cobordism satisfies the projective bundle formula. As applications of this, we construct cobordism Chern classes of vector bundles, and establish a strong connection between the cobordism cohomol…
In this paper, we study the algebraic cobordism spectrum $MSL$ in the motivic stable homotopy category of Voevodsky over an arbitrary perfect field $k$. Using the motivic Adams spectral sequence, we compute the geometric part of the $η$-completion of $MSL$ (modulo the maximal subgroup that is $l$-divisble for all primes $l\neq2, char k$). As an application, we study the Krichever's elliptic genus with integral coefficients, restricted to $MSL$. We determine its image, and identify its kernel as the ideal generated by differences of $SL$-flops. This was proved by B. Totaro in the complex analyt…
We reconstruct hermitian K-theory via algebraic symplectic cobordism. In the motivic stable homotopy category SH(S) there is a unique morphism g : MSp -> BO of commutative ring T- spectra which sends the Thom class th^{MSp} to the Thom class th^{BO}. We show that the induced morphism of bigraded cohomology theories MSp^{*,*} -> BO^{*,*} is isomorphic to the morphism of bigraded cohomology theories obtained by applying to MSp^{*,*} the "change of (simply graded) coefficients rings" MSp^{4*,2*} -> BO^{4*,2*}. This is an algebraic version of the theorem of Conner and Floyd reconstructing real K-t…
We reconstruct derived Witt groups via special linear algebraic cobordism. There is a morphism of ring cohomology theories which sends the canonical Thom class in special linear cobordism to the Thom class in the derived Witt groups. We show that for every smooth variety X this morphism induces an isomorphism between MSL^{*,*}(X)[h^{-1}] with the "extended" coefficient ring MSL^{4*,2*}(pt) -> W^{2*}(pt) and Laurent polynomial ring over the derived Witt groups W^*(X), where h is the stable Hopf map. This result is an analogue of the result by Panin and Walter reconstructing hermitian K-theory u…
Relying on results of Hopkins-Morel, we show that, for $X$ a quasi-projective variety over a field of characteristic zero, the canonical map $Ω_n(X)\to MGL_{2n,n}'(X)$ is an isomorphism. Here $Ω_*(X)$ is the theory of algebraic cobordism defined by Levine-Morel, and $MGL_{*,*}'$ is the Borel-Moore homology version of the theory of algebraic cobordism defined via the algebraic Thom complex in the Morel-Voevodsky motivic stable homotopy category.
We examine various versions of oriented cohomology and Borel-Moore homology theories in algebraic geometry and put these two together in the setting of an "oriented duality theory", a generalization of Bloch-Ogus twisted duality theory. This combines and exends work of Panin and Mocanasu. We apply this to give a Borel-Moore homology version $MGL'_{*,*}$ of Voevodsky's $MGL^{*,*}$-theory, and a natural map $\vartheta:Ω_*\to MGL'_{2*,*}$, where $Ω_*$ is the algebraic cobordism theory defined by Levine-Morel. We conjecture that $\vartheta$ is an isomorphism and describe a program for proving this…
The purpose of this paper is to study an extended version of bivariant derived algebraic cobordism where the cycles carry a vector bundle on the source as additional data. We show that, over a field of characteristic 0, this extends the analogous homological theory of Lee and Pandharipande constructed earlier. We then proceed to study in detail the restricted theory where only rank 1 vector bundles are allowed, and prove a weak version of projective bundle formula for bivariant cobordism. Since the proof of this theorem works very generally, we introduce precobordism theories over arbitrary No…
Quillen's algebraic K-theory is reconstructed via Voevodsky's algebraic cobordism. More precisely, for a ground field k the algebraic cobordism P^1-spectrum MGL of Voevodsky is considered as a commutative P^1-ring spectrum. There is a unique ring morphism MGL^{2*,*}(k)--> Z which sends the class [X]_{MGL} of a smooth projective k-variety X to the Euler characteristic of the structure sheaf of X. Our main result states that there is a canonical grade preserving isomorphism of ring cohomology theories MGL^{*,*}(X,U) \tensor_{MGL^{2*,*}(k)} Z --> K^{TT}_{- *}(X,U) = K'_{- *}(X-U)} on the category…
We consider the cobordism ring of involutions of a field of characteristic not two, whose elements are formal differences of classes of smooth projective varieties equipped with an involution, and relations arise from equivariant K-theory characteristic numbers. We investigate in detail the structure of this ring. Concrete applications are provided concerning involutions of varieties, relating the geometry of the ambient variety to that of the fixed locus, in terms of Chern numbers. In particular, we prove an algebraic analog of Boardman's five halves theorem in topology, of which we provide s…
We start to study the problem of classifying smooth proper varieties over a field k from the standpoint of A^1-homotopy theory. Motivated by the topological theory of surgery, we discuss the problem of classifying up to isomorphism all smooth proper varieties having a specified A^1-homotopy type. Arithmetic considerations involving the sheaf of A^1-connected components lead us to introduce several different notions of connectedness in A^1-homotopy theory. We provide concrete links between these notions, connectedness of points by chains of affine lines, and various rationality properties of al…
Together with F. Morel, we have constructed in \cite{CR, Cobord1, Cobord2} a theory of {\em algebraic cobordism}, an algebro-geometric version of the topological theory of complex cobordism. In this paper, we give a survey of the construction and main results of this theory; in the final section, we propose a candidate for a theory of higher algebraic cobordism, which hopefully agrees with the cohomology theory represented by the $¶^1$-spectrum $MGL$ in the Morel-Voevodsky stable homotopy category.
We construct algebraic cobordism spectra MSL and MSp. They are commutative monoids in the category of symmetric T^{2}- spectra. The spectrum MSp comes with a natural symplectic orientation given either by a tautological Thom class th^{MSp} in MSp^{4,2}(MSp_{2}), a tautological Borel class b_{1}^{MSp} in MSp^{4,2}(HP^{\infty}) or any of six other equivalent structures. For a commutative monoid E in the category SH(S) we prove that assignment g -> g(th^{MSp}) identifies the set of homomorphisms of monoids g : MSp -> E in the motivic stable homotopy category SH(S) with the set of tautological Tho…
We outline briefly results and examples related with the bijectivity of the norm residue homomorphism. We define norm varieties and describe some constructions. We discuss degree formulas which form a major tool to handle norm varieties. Finally we formulate Hilbert's 90 for symbols which is the hard part of the bijectivity of the norm residue homomorphism, modulo a theorem of Voevodsky.
We prove that the $\infty$-category of $\mathrm{MGL}$-modules over any scheme is equivalent to the $\infty$-category of motivic spectra with finite syntomic transfers. Using the recognition principle for infinite $\mathbb{P}^1$-loop spaces, we deduce that very effective $\mathrm{MGL}$-modules over a perfect field are equivalent to grouplike motivic spaces with finite syntomic transfers. Along the way, we describe any motivic Thom spectrum built from virtual vector bundles of nonnegative rank in terms of the moduli stack of finite quasi-smooth derived schemes with the corresponding tangential s…
Faltings; Gabber and Ramero introduced almost mathematics. In another way, almost mathematics can be characterized bilocalization abelian category of modules mentioned in Quillen's unpublished note. Applying the concept of Quillen's bilocalization to Gabber and Ramero's work, this paper establishes the almost version of algebraic $K$-theory and cobordism. As a result of almost $K$-theory, we prove that in the case an almost algebra containing a field, the almost $K$-theory of the almost algebra is a direct factor of the $K$-theory of the field, implying that almost $K$-theory holds the Gersten…
We study the problem of classifying projectivizations of rank-two vector bundles over ${\mathbb P}^2$ up to various notions of equivalence that arise naturally in ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy theory, namely ${\mathbb A}^1$-weak equivalence and ${\mathbb A}^1$-$h$-cobordism. First, we classify such varieties up to ${\mathbb A}^1$-weak equivalence: over algebraically closed fields having characteristic unequal to two the classification can be given in terms of characteristic classes of the underlying vector bundle. When the base field is ${\mathbb C}$, this classification result can be compared to a…
Using methods inspired from algebraic $K$-theory, we give a new proof of the Genauer fibration sequence, relating the cobordism categories of closed manifolds with cobordism categories of manifolds with boundaries, and of the Bökstedt-Madsen delooping of the cobordism category. Unlike the existing proofs, this approach generalizes to other cobordism-like categories of interest. Indeed we argue that the Genauer fibration sequence is an analogue, in the setting of cobordism categories, of Waldhausen's Additivity theorem in algebraic $K$-theory.
We calculate the cobordism ring $Ω^{C_2}_*$ of stably almost complex manifolds with involution, and investigate the $C_2$-spectrum $Ω_{C_2}$ which represents it. We introduce the notion of a geometrically oriented $C_2$-spectrum, which extends the notion of a complex oriented $C_2$-spectrum, and of which $Ω_{C_2}$ is the universal example. Examples, in addition to $Ω_{C_2}$, include the Eilenberg-Maclane spectrum $H \underline{\mathbb{Z}}_{C_2}$ and the connective cover $k_{C_2}$ of $C_2$-equivariant $K$-theory. On the algebraic side, we define and study filtered $C_2$-equivariant formal group…
We generalize the Künneth formula for Chow groups to an arbitrary OBM-homology theory satisfying descent (e.g. algebraic cobordism) when taking a product with a toric variety. As a corollary we obtain a universal coefficient theorem for the operational cohomology rings. We also give a description for the homology groups of smooth toric varieties, that allows the calculation of algebraic cobordism groups of singular toric varieties. Some computations are carried out.
We specify exterior generators for $π_* THH(MU) = π_*(MU) \otimes E(λ'_n \mid n\ge1)$ and $π_* THH(BP) = π_*(BP) \otimes E(λ_n \mid n\ge1)$, and calculate the action of the $σ$-operator on these graded rings. In particular, $σ(λ'_n) = 0$ and $σ(λ_n) = 0$, while the actions on $π_*(MU)$ and $π_*(BP)$ are expressed in terms of the right units $η_R$ in the Hopf algebroids $(π_*(MU), π_*(MU \wedge MU))$ and $(π_*(BP), π_*(BP \wedge BP))$, respectively.
An object in motivic homotopy theory is called cellular if it can be built out of motivic spheres using homotopy colimit constructions. We explore some examples and consequences of cellularity. We explain why the algebraic K-theory and algebraic cobordism spectra are both cellular, and prove some Kunneth theorems for cellular objects.
We establish a motivic version of the May Nilpotence Conjecture: if E is a normed motivic spectrum that satisfies $E \wedge HZ \simeq 0$, then also $E \wedge MGL \simeq 0$. In words, motivic homology detects vanishing of normed modules over the algebraic cobordism spectrum.
Frank Adams introduced the notion of a complex oriented cohomology theory represented by a commutative ring-spectrum and proved the Poincaré Duality theorem for this general case. In the current paper we consider oriented cohomology theories on algebraic varieties represented by multiplicative symmetric $T$-spectra and prove the Duality theorem, which mimics the result of Adams. This result is held, in particular, for Motivic Cohomology and Algebraic Cobordism of Voevodsky.
For an oriented cohomology theory A and a relative cellular space X, we decompose the A-motive of X into a direct sum of twisted motives of the base spaces. We also obtain respective decompositions of the A-cohomology of X. Applying them, one can compute A(X), where X is an isotropic projective homogeneous variety and A means algebraic K-theory, motivic cohomology or algebraic cobordism MGL.
