Random Matrix Theory (RMT) has successfully modeled diverse systems, from energy levels of heavy nuclei to zeros of $L$-functions. Many statistics in one can be interpreted in terms of quantities of the other; for example, zeros of $L$-functions correspond to eigenvalues of matrices, and values of $L$-functions to values of the characteristic polynomials. This correspondence has allowed RMT to successfully predict many number theory behaviors; however, there are some operations which to date have no RMT analogue. The motivation of this paper is to try and find an RMT equivalent to Rankin-Selberg convolution, which builds a new $L$-functions from an input pair.
For definiteness we concentrate on two specific families, the ensemble of palindromic real symmetric Toeplitz (PST) matrices and the ensemble of real symmetric (RS) matrices, whose limiting spectral measures are the Gaussian and semicircle distributions, respectively; these were chosen as they are the two extreme cases in terms of moment calculations. For a PST matrix $A$ and a RS matrix $B$, we construct an ensemble of random real symmetric block matrices whose first row is $\lbrace A, B \rbrace$ and whose second row is $\lbrace B, A \rbrace$. By Markov's Method of Moments, we show this ensemble converges weakly and almost surely to a new, universal distribution with a hybrid of Gaussian and semicircle behaviors. We extend this construction by considering an iterated concatenation of matrices from an arbitrary pair of random real symmetric sub-ensembles with different limiting spectral measures. We prove that finite iterations converge to new, universal distributions with hybrid behavior, and that infinite iterations converge to the limiting spectral measures of the component matrices.
We prove that few largest (and most important) eigenvalues of random symmetric matrices of various kinds are very strongly concentrated. This strong concentration enables us to compute the means of these eigenvalues with high precision. Our approach uses Talagrand's inequality and is very different from standard approaches.
We consider a class of sparse random matrices, which includes the adjacency matrix of Erdős-Rényi graphs $\mathcal G(N,p)$ for $p \in [N^{\varepsilon-1},N^{-\varepsilon}]$. We identify the joint limiting distributions of the eigenvalues away from 0 and the spectral edges. Our result indicates that unlike Wigner matrices, the eigenvalues of sparse matrices satisfy central limit theorems with normalization $N\sqrt{p}$. In addition, the eigenvalues fluctuate simultaneously: the correlation of two eigenvalues of the same/different sign is asymptotically 1/-1. We also prove CLTs for the eigenvalue …
We consider a class of elliptic random matrices which generalize two classical ensembles from random matrix theory: Wigner matrices and random matrices with iid entries. In particular, we establish a central limit theorem for linear eigenvalue statistics of real elliptic random matrices under the assumption that the test functions are analytic. As a corollary, we extend the results of Rider and Silverstein to real iid random matrices.
We prove the Central Limit Theorem for linear statistics of the eigenvalues of band random matrices provided $\sqrt{n} \ll b_n \ll n$ and test functions are sufficiently smooth.
We prove that the linear statistics of the eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix converge to a universal Gaussian process on all mesoscopic spectral scales, i.e. scales larger than the typical eigenvalue spacing and smaller than the global extent of the spectrum.
Random matrices formed from i.i.d. standard real Gaussian entries have the feature that the expected number of real eigenvalues is non-zero. This property persists for products of such matrices, independently chosen, and moreover it is known that as the number of matrices in the product tends to infinity, the probability that all eigenvalues are real tends to unity. We quantify the distribution of the number of real eigenvalues for products of finite size real Gaussian matrices by giving an explicit Pfaffian formula for the probability that there are exactly $k$ real eigenvalues as a determina…
We study large Wigner random matrices in the case when the marginal distributions of matrix entries have heavy tails. We prove that the largest eigenvalues of such matrices have Poisson statistics.
Using a change-of-measure argument, we prove an equality in law between the process of largest eigenvalues in a generalized Wishart random-matrix process and a last-passage percolation process. This equality in law was conjectured by Borodin and Peche.
We consider large complex random sample covariance matrices obtained from "spiked populations", that is when the true covariance matrix is diagonal with all but finitely many eigenvalues equal to one. We investigate the limiting behavior of the largest eigenvalues when the population and the sample sizes both become large. Under some conditions on moments of the sample distribution, we prove that the asymptotic fluctuations of the largest eigenvalues are the same as for a complex Gaussian sample with the same true covariance. The real setting is also considered.
We study CMV matrices (a discrete one-dimensional Dirac-type operator) with random decaying coefficients. Under mild assumptions we identify the local eigenvalue statistics in the natural scaling limit. For rapidly decreasing coefficients, the eigenvalues have rigid spacing (like the numerals on a clock); in the case of slow decrease, the eigenvalues are distributed according to a Poisson process. For a certain critical rate of decay we obtain the circular beta ensembles of random matrix theory. The temperature β^{-1} appears as the square of the coupling constant.
After proper rescaling and under some technical assumptions, the smallest eigenvalue of a sample covariance matrix with aspect ratio bounded away from 1 converges to the Tracy--Widom distribution. This complements the results on the largest eigenvalue, due to Soshnikov and Peche.
We prove a central limit theorem for the difference of linear eigenvalue statistics of a sample covariance matrix $\widetilde{W}$ and its minor $W$. We find that the fluctuation of this difference is much smaller than those of the individual linear statistics, as a consequence of the strong correlation between the eigenvalues of $\widetilde{W}$ and $W$. Our result identifies the fluctuation of the spatial derivative of the approximate Gaussian field in the recent paper by Dumitru and Paquette. Unlike in a similar result for Wigner matrices, for sample covariance matrices the fluctuation may en…
We consider dynamically defined Hermitian matrices generated from orbits of the doubling map. We prove that their spectra fall into the GUE universality class from random matrix theory.
We prove concentration results for $\ell_p^n$ operator norms of rectangular random matrices and eigenvalues of self-adjoint random matrices. The random matrices we consider have bounded entries which are independent, up to a possible self-adjointness constraint. Our results are based on an isoperimetric inequality for product spaces due to Talagrand.
The purpose of this note is twofold: firstly to improve the known results on variation of extreme eigenvalues of birth and death matrices and random walk matrices; and secondly to progress towards the solution of a thirty years old open problem concerning the variation of eigenvalues of these matrices. Keywords: Birth and death matrices, random walk matrices, eigenvalues, monotonicity
Random matrices arise in many mathematical contexts, and it is natural to ask about the properties that such matrices satisfy. If we choose a matrix with integer entries at random, for example, what is the probability that it will have a particular integer as an eigenvalue, or an integer eigenvalue at all? If we choose a matrix with real entries at random, what is the probability that it will have a real eigenvalue in a particular interval? The purpose of this paper is to resolve these questions, once they are made suitably precise, in the setting of 2x2 matrices.
We consider large Hermitian matrices whose entries are defined by evaluating the exponential function along orbits of the skew-shift $\binom{j}{2} ω+jy+x \mod 1$ for irrational $ω$. We prove that the eigenvalue distribution of these matrices converges to the corresponding distribution from random matrix theory on the global scale, namely, the Wigner semicircle law for square matrices and the Marchenko-Pastur law for rectangular matrices. The results evidence the quasi-random nature of the skew-shift dynamics which was observed in other contexts by Bourgain-Goldstein-Schlag and Rudnick-Sarnak-Z…
We study linear eigenvalue statistics of band Hankel matrices with Brownian motion entries. We prove that, the centred, normalized linear eigenvalue statistics of band Hankel matrices obey a central limit theorem (CLT) type result. We also discuss the convergence of linear eigenvalue statistics of band Hankel matrices with independent entries for odd power monomials. Our method is based on trace formula, moment method and some results of process convergence.
We present a novel approach to study eigenvalues of deformed random matrices. This approach applies to many deformed Gaussian matrix models; two such models are studied in detail: the deformed GOE and the spiked population model.
We compute the limiting eigenvalue statistics at the edge of the spectrum of large Hermitian random matrices perturbed by the addition of small rank deterministic matrices. To be more precise, we consider random Hermitian matrices with independent Gaussian entries $M_{ij}, i\leq j$ with various expectations. We prove that the largest eigenvalue of such random matrices exhibits, in the large $N$ limit, various limiting distributions depending on both the eigenvalues of the matrix $(\mathbb{E}M_{ij})_{i,j=1}^N$ and its rank.
Large H-selfadjoint random matrices are considered. The matrix $H$ is assumed to have one negative eigenvalue, hence the matrix in question has precisely one eigenvalue of nonpositive type. It is showed that this eigenvalue converges in probability to a deterministic limit. The weak limit of distribution of the real eigenvalues is investigated as well.
In this paper, we consider the universality of the local eigenvalue statistics of random matrices. Our main result shows that these statistics are determined by the first four moments of the distribution of the entries. As a consequence, we derive the universality of eigenvalue gap distribution and $k$-point correlation and many other statistics (under some mild assumptions) for both Wigner Hermitian matrices and Wigner real symmetric matrices.
This is a brief survey of classical and recent results about the typical behavior of eigenvalues of large random matrices, written for mathematicians and others who study and use matrices but may not be accustomed to thinking about randomness.
This article focuses on linear eigenvalue statistics of Hankel matrices with independent entries. Using the convergence of moments we show that the linear eigenvalue statistics of Hankel matrices for odd degree monomials with degree greater than or equal to three does not converge in distribution to a Gaussian random variable. This result is a departure from the known results, Liu, Sun and Wang (2012), Kumar and Maurya (2022), of linear eigenvalue statistics of Hankel matrices for even degree monomial test functions, where the limits were Gaussian random variables.
We prove the Central Limit Theorem for finite-dimensional vectors of linear eigenvalue statistics of submatrices of Wigner random matrices under the assumption that test functions are sufficiently smooth. We connect the asymptotic covariance to a family of correlated Gaussian Free Fields.
We establish a moderate deviation principle (MDP) for the number of eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix in an interval. The proof relies on fine asymptotics of the variance of the eigenvalue counting function of GUE matrices due to Gustavsson. The extension to large families of Wigner matrices is based on the Tao and Vu Four Moment Theorem and applies localization results by Erdös, Yau and Yin. Moreover we investigate families of covariance matrices as well.
Since E.P.Wigner (1958) established his famous semicircle law, lots of attention has been paid by physicists, probabilists and statisticians to study the asymptotic properties of the largest eigenvalues for random matrices. Bai and Yin (1988) obtained the necessary and sufficient conditions for the strong convergence of the extreme eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix. In this paper, we consider the case of quaternion self-dual Hermitian matrices. We prove the necessary and sufficient conditions for the strong convergence of extreme eigenvalues of quaternion self-dual Hermitian matrices correspondin…
We analyze the largest eigenvalue statistics of m-dependent heavy-tailed Wigner matrices as well as the associated sample covariance matrices having entry-wise regularly varying tail distributions with parameter $0<α<4$. Our analysis extends results in the previous literature for the corresponding random matrices with independent entries above the diagonal, by allowing for m-dependence between the entries of a given matrix. We prove that the limiting point process of extreme eigenvalues is a Poisson cluster process.
We describe the resolvent approach for the rigorous study of the mescoscopic regime of Hermitian matrix spectra. We present results reflecting the universal behavior of the smoothed density of eigenvalue distribution of large random matrices
We compute exact asymptotic of the statistical density of random matrices belonging to invariant random matrices ensemble (RMT) orthogonal, unitary and symplectic ensembles, where all its eigenvalues lie within the interval $[σ, +\infty[$ or $]-\infty,τ]$ or $[σ,τ]$. It is found that the density of eigenvalues generically exhibits an inverse square-root singularity at the location of the barriers. These results generalized the case of Gaussian random matrices ensemble studied by Dean-Majumdar.
We study the eigenvalue problem for some special class of anti-triangular matrices. Though the eigenvalue problem is quite classical, as far as we know, almost nothing is known about properties of eigenvalues for anti-triangular matrices. In this paper, we show that there is a nice class of anti-triangular matrices whose eigenvalues are given explicitly by their elements. Moreover, this class contains several interesting subclasses which we characterize in terms of probability measures. We also discuss the application of our main theorem to the study of interacting particle systems, which are …
The purpose of this note is to establish a Central Limit Theorem for the number of eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix in an interval. The proof relies on the correct aymptotics of the variance of the eigenvalue counting function of GUE matrices due to Gustavsson, and its extension to large families of Wigner matrices by means of the Tao and Vu Four Moment Theorem and recent localization results by Erdös, Yau and Yin.
We consider a square random matrix of size $N$ of the form $P(Y,A)$ where $P$ is a noncommutative polynomial, $A$ is a tuple of deterministic matrices converging in $\ast$-distribution, when $N$ goes to infinity, towards a tuple $a$ in some $\mathcal{C}^*$-probability space and $Y$ is a tuple of independent matrices with i.i.d. centered entries with variance $1/N$. We investigate the eigenvalues of $P(Y,A)$ outside the spectrum of $P(c,a)$ where $c$ is a circular system which is free from $a$. We provide a sufficient condition to guarantee that these eigenvalues coincide asymptotically with th…
This note presents some central limit theorems for the eigenvalue counting function of Wigner matrices in the form of suitable translations of results by Gustavsson and O'Rourke on the limiting behavior of eigenvalues inside the bulk of the semicircle law for Gaussian matrices. The theorems are then extended to large families of Wigner matrices by the Tao and Vu Four Moment Theorem. Similar results are developed for covariance matrices.
In this article, we study the fluctuation of linear eigenvalue statistics of symmetric circulant matrices $(SC_n)$ with independent entries which satisfy some moment conditions. We show that $\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}} \Tr ϕ(SC_n)$ obey the central limit theorem (CLT) type result, where $ϕ$ is a nice test function.
We study the statistics of the largest eigenvalues of real symmetric and sample covariance matrices when the entries are heavy tailed. Extending the result obtained by Soshnikov in \cite{Sos1}, we prove that, in the absence of the fourth moment, the top eigenvalues behave, in the limit, as the largest entries of the matrix.
We establish a moderate deviation principle (MDP) for the number of eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix in an interval close to the edge of the spectrum. Moreover we prove a MDP for the $i$th largest eigenvalue close to the edge. The proof relies on fine asymptotics of the variance of the eigenvalue counting function of GUE matrices due to Gustavsson. The extension to large families of Wigner matrices is based on the Tao and Vu Four Moment Theorem. Possible extensions to other random matrix ensembles are commented.
In this article we study the fluctuation of linear statistics of eigenvalues of circulant, symmetric circulant, reverse circulant and Hankel matrices. We show that the linear spectral statistics of these matrices converges to the Gaussian distribution in total variation norm when the matrices are constructed using i.i.d. normal random variables. We also calculate the limiting variance of the linear spectral statistics for circulant, symmetric circulant and reverse circulant matrices.
In this article, we establish a limiting distribution for eigenvalues of a class of auto-covariance matrices. The same distribution has been found in the literature for a regularized version of these auto-covariance matrices. The original non-regularized auto-covariance matrices are non invertible which introduce supplementary diffculties for the study of their eigenvalues through Girko's Hermitization scheme. The key result in this paper is a new polynomial lower bound for the least singular value of the resolvent matrices associated to a rank-defective quadratic function of a random matrix w…
In this paper we discuss the process convergence of the time dependent fluctuations of linear eigenvalue statistics of random circulant matrices with independent Brownian motion entries, as the dimension of the matrix tends to $\infty $. Our derivation is based on the trace formula of circulant matrix, method of moments and some combinatorial techniques.
This work is concerned with finite range bounds on the variance of individual eigenvalues of Wigner random matrices, in the bulk and at the edge of the spectrum, as well as for some intermediate eigenvalues. Relying on the GUE example, which needs to be investigated first, the main bounds are extended to families of Hermitian Wigner matrices by means of the Tao and Vu Four Moment Theorem and recent localization results by Erdös, Yau and Yin. The case of real Wigner matrices is obtained from interlacing formulas. As an application, bounds on the expected 2-Wasserstein distance between the empir…
We prove a local law for eigenvalues of the random Hermitian matrices with external source $W_n=\frac{1}{n}X_n+A_n$ where $X_n$ is Wigner matrix and $A_n$ is diagonal matrix with only two values $a, -a$ on the diagonal. The local law is an essential step to prove the universality conjecture for this random matrix model.
We consider $N$ by $N$ deformed Wigner random matrices of the form $X_N=H_N+A_N$, where $H_N$ is a real symmetric or complex Hermitian Wigner matrix and $A_N$ is a deterministic real bounded diagonal matrix. We prove a universal Central Limit Theorem for the linear eigenvalue statistics of $X_N$ for all mesoscopic scales both in the spectral bulk and at regular edges where the global eigenvalue density vanishes as a square root. The method relies on the characteristic function method in [47], local laws for the Green function of $X_N$ in [3, 46, 51] and analytic subordination properties of the…
In this paper, we explain the dependance of the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalues of a Deformed Wigner model with respect to the eigenvectors of the perturbation matrix. We exhibit quite general situations that will give rise to universality or non universality of the fluctuations.
The relation between random normal matrices and conformal mappings discovered by Wiegmann and Zabrodin is made rigorous by restricting normal matrices to have spectrum in a bounded set. It is shown that for a suitable class of potentials the asymptotic density of eigenvalues is uniform with support in the interior domain of a simple smooth curve.
We prove the first eigenvalue repulsion bound for sparse random matrices. As a consequence, we show that these matrices have simple spectrum, improving the range of sparsity and error probability from the work of the second author and Vu. As an application of our tail bounds, we show that for sparse Erdős--Rényi graphs, weak and strong nodal domains are the same, answering a question of Dekel, Lee, and Linial.
This work is concerned with finite range bounds on the variance of individual eigenvalues of random covariance matrices, both in the bulk and at the edge of the spectrum. In a preceding paper, the author established analogous results for Wigner matrices and stated the results for covariance matrices. They are proved in the present paper. Relying on the LUE example, which needs to be investigated first, the main bounds are extended to complex covariance matrices by means of the Tao, Vu and Wang Four Moment Theorem and recent localization results by Pillai and Yin. The case of real covariance ma…
We consider random n\times n matrices of the form (XX*+YY*)^{-1/2}YY*(XX*+YY*)^{-1/2}, where X and Y have independent entries with zero mean and variance one. These matrices are the natural generalization of the Gaussian case, which are known as MANOVA matrices and which have joint eigenvalue density given by the third classical ensemble, the Jacobi ensemble. We show that, away from the spectral edge, the eigenvalue density converges to the limiting density of the Jacobi ensemble even on the shortest possible scales of order 1/n (up to \log n factors). This result is the analogue of the local …
We give an upper bound on the total variation distance between the linear eigenvalue statistic, properly scaled and centred, of a random matrix with a variance profile and the standard Gaussian random variable. The second order Poincaré inequality type result is used to establish the bound. Using this bound we prove Central limit theorem for linear eigenvalue statistics of random matrices with different kind of variance profiles. We re-establish some existing results on fluctuations of linear eigenvalue statistics of some well known random matrix ensembles by choosing appropriate variance prof…
The purpose of this paper is to establish universality of the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalue of some non necessarily Gaussian complex Deformed Wigner Ensembles. The real model is also considered. Our approach is close to the one used by A. Soshnikov in the investigations of classical real or complex Wigner Ensembles. It is based on the computation of moments of traces of high powers of the random matrices under consideration.
