The atmospheric parameters and abundances of Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti have been determined for 20 stars using the Gaia DR2 parallaxes, high-resolution spectra, and the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) line formation modeling. A sample of stars with homogeneous data on the abundances of alpha-process elements has thus been increased to 94. It is shown that applying a non-LTE approach and classical 1D atmospheric models with spectroscopically determined surface gravities based on Fe~I and Fe~II lines yields reliable results. Analysis of the full sample confirms the conclusions of earlier studies indicating enhancements of Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti relative to Fe for halo and thick-disk stars, and larger enhancements for the thick-disk stars compared to the thin-disk stars of similar metallicities. The following new results are obtained. The ratios [Mg/Fe], [Si/Fe], [Ca/Fe], and [Ti/Fe] in the thick disk remain constant and similar to each other at the level 0.3 when [Fe/H] < -0.4, and fall off when the metallicity becomes higher, suggesting the onset of the production of iron in Type Ia supernovae. Halo stars have the same [alpha/Fe] values independent of their distance (within ~ 8 kpc of the Sun), providing evidence for a universal evolution of the abundances of alpha-process elements in different parts of the Galaxy. The enhancements relative to iron for halo stars are, on average, similar, at the level 0.3 dex, for Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti. These data are important for constraining the nucleosynthesis models. The star-to-star scatter of [alpha/Fe] increases for [Fe/H] < -2.6, while the scatter of the ratios between the different alpha-process elements remains small, possibly indicating incomplete mixing of nucleosynthesis products at the epoch of the formation of these stars.
We evaluate non-local thermodynamical equilibrium (non-LTE) line formation for neutral sodium in model atmospheres of the 79 red giants using the model atom that incorporates the best available atomic data. The non-LTE abundances of Na were determined from Na I 6154, 6161 Å for the 38 stars of the thin disk (15 of them the BaII stars), 15 stars of the thick disk, 13 stars of Hercules stream and 13 transition stars which can be identified with neither thin disk nor thick disk. For Na I 6154, 6161 Å non-LTE abundance corrections amount to -0.06 to -0.24 dex depending on stellar parameters. We fo…
Two distinct halo populations were found in the solar neighborhood by a series of works. They can be clearly separated by [alpha\Fe] and several other elemental abundance ratios including [Cu/Fe]. Very recently, a non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) study revealed that relatively large departures exist between LTE and non-LTE results in copper abundance analysis. We aim to derive the copper abundances for the stars from the sample of Nissen et al (2010) with both LTE and non-LTE calculations. Based on our results, we study the non-LTE effects of copper and investigate whether the hig…
Theories of thick disk formation can be differentiated by measurements of stellar elemental abundances. We have undertaken a study of metal-poor stars selected from the RAVE spectroscopic survey of bright stars to establish whether or not there is a significant population of metal-poor thick-disk stars ([Fe/H] <~ -1.0) and to measure their elemental abundances. In this paper, we present abundances of four alpha-elements (Mg, Si, Ca, Ti) and iron for a subsample of 212 RGB and 31 RC/HB stars from this study. We find that the [alpha/Fe] ratios are enhanced implying that enrichment proceeded by p…
We study a fragment of a large quiescent filament observed on May 29, 2017 by the Interferometric BIdimensional Spectropolarimeter (IBIS) mounted at the Dunn Solar Telescope. We focus on its quiescent stage prior to its eruption. We analyse the spectral observations obtained in the H$α$ line to derive the thermodynamic properties of the plasma of the observed fragment of the filament. We used a 2D filament model employing radiative transfer computations under conditions that depart from the local thermodynamic equilibrium. We employed a forward modelling technique in which we used the 2D model…
We present a new model atom of Zn I-II based on the most up-to-date photoionisation cross-sections, electron-impact excitation rates, and rate coefficients for the Zn I + H I and Zn II + H- collisions. The latter were calculated using the multi-channel quantum asymptotic treatment based on the Born-Oppenheimer approach. Non-LTE analysis was performed for the first time for lines of Zn I and Zn II in the ultraviolet (UV) spectra of two very metal-poor reference stars, HD 84937 and HD 140283. We found consistent non-LTE abundance from the resonance Zn I 2138 A line, the subordinate lines, and th…
We have identified the H-alpha absorption feature as a new spectroscopic diagnostic of luminosity class in K- and M-type stars. From high-resolution spectra of 19 stars with well-determined physical properties (including effective temperatures and stellar radii), we measured equivalent widths for H-alpha and the Ca II triplet and examined their dependence on both luminosity class and stellar radius. H-alpha shows a strong relation with both luminosity class and radius that extends down to late M spectral types. This behavior in H-alpha has been predicted as a result of the density-dependent ov…
Elemental abundance ratios as tracers of stellar populations are discussed with emphasis on F, G, and K stars providing a `fossil' record of the chemical evolution of the Galaxy. Most abundance studies have been based on homogeneous 1D model atmospheres and the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE), but recent works have shown that 3D non-LTE corrections can change the derived trends of abundance ratios as a function of stellar metallicity very significantly. However, when comparing stars having similar effective temperatures, surface gravities, and metallicities, 3D non-LTE corr…
We investigated the copper abundances for $64$ late-type stars in the Galactic disk and halo with effective temperatures from $5400$ K to $6700$ K and [Fe/H] from $-1.88$ to $-0.17$. For the first time, the copper abundances are derived using both local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) and non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) calculations. High resolution ($R > 40,000$), high signal-to-noise ratio ($S/N > 100$) spectra from the FOCES spectrograph are used. The atmospheric models are calculated based on the MAFAGS opacity sampling code. All the abundances are derived using the spectrum …
In network and active region plages, the magnetic field is concentrated into structures often described as flux tubes (FTs) and sheets (FSs). 3-D radiative transfer (RT) is important for energy transport in these concentrations. It is also expected to be important for diagnostic purposes but has rarely been applied for that purpose. Using true 3-D, non-LTE (NLTE) RT in FT/FS models, we compute Fe line profiles commonly used to diagnose the Sun's magnetic field by comparing the results with those obtained from LTE/1-D (1.5-D) NLTE calculations. Employing a multilevel iron atom, we study the inf…
The aim of this paper is to characterise the abundance patterns of five iron-peak elements (Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, and Zn) for which the stellar origin and chemical evolution are still debated. We automatically derived iron peak (Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, and Zn) and alpha element (Mg) chemical abundances for 4666 stars. We used the bimodal distribution of [Mg/Fe] to chemically classify sample stars into different Galactic substructures: thin disc, metal-poor and high-alpha metal rich, high-alpha and low-alpha metal-poor populations. High-alpha and low-alpha metal-poor populations are fully distinct in Mg, Cu,…
[abridged] Beryllium is a pure product of cosmic ray spallation. This implies a relatively simple evolution in time of the beryllium abundance and suggests its use as a time-like observable. We study the evolution of Be in the early Galaxy and its dependence on kinematic and orbital parameters. We investigate the formation of the halo and the thick disk of the Galaxy and the use of Be as a cosmochronometer. Beryllium abundances are determined from high resolution, high signal to noise UVES spectra with spectrum synthesis in the largest sample of halo and thick disk stars analyzed to date. We p…

A new model atom of Sc II was constructed using the most up-to-date atomic data. For the testing purpose, the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) calculations were carried out for three stars with reliably determined atmospheric parameters: the Sun, HD~61421 (Procyon), and HD~84937. Accounting for deviations from LTE leads to smaller abundance errors compared with the LTE case and consistent within the error bars abundances obtained from different Sc II lines. Solar non-LTE abundance log eps_Sun = 3.12+-0.05 exceeds the meteoritic abundance recommended by Lodders (2021), by 0.08~dex.…
Context. Computing spectra from 3D simulations of stellar atmospheres when allowing for departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) is computationally very intensive. Aims. We develop a machine learning based method to speed up 3D non-LTE radiative transfer calculations in optically thick stellar atmospheres. Methods. Making use of a variety of 3D simulations of the solar atmosphere, we trained a convolutional neural network, SunnyNet, to learn the translation from LTE to non-LTE atomic populations. Non-LTE populations computed with an existing 3D code were considered as the true…
The abundances of carbon, oxygen, and iron in late-type stars are important parameters in exoplanetary and stellar physics, as well as key tracers of stellar populations and Galactic chemical evolution. We carried out three-dimensional (3D) non-LTE radiative transfer calculations for CI and OI, and 3D LTE radiative transfer calculations for FeII, across the STAGGER-grid of 3D hydrodynamic model atmospheres. The absolute 3D non-LTE versus 1D LTE abundance corrections can be as severe as $-0.3$ dex for CI lines in low-metallicity F dwarfs, and $-0.6$ dex for OI lines in high-metallicity F dwarfs…
This review paper outlines background information and covers recent advances made via the analysis of spectra and images of prominence plasma and the increased sophistication of non-LTE (ie when there is a departure from Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium) radiative transfer models. We first describe the spectral inversion techniques that have been used to infer the plasma parameters important for the general properties of the prominence plasma in both its cool core and the hotter prominence-corona transition region. We also review studies devoted to the observation of bulk motions of the promine…
Oxygen abundances of 67 dwarf stars in the metallicity range -1.6<[Fe/H]<-0.4 are derived from a non-LTE analysis of the 777 nm O I triplet lines. These stars have precise atmospheric parameters measured by Nissen and Schuster, who find that they separate into three groups based on their kinematics and alpha-element (Mg, Si, Ca, Ti) abundances: thick-disk, high-alpha halo, and low-alpha halo. We find the oxygen abundance trends of thick-disk and high-alpha halo stars very similar. The low-alpha stars show a larger star-to-star scatter in [O/Fe] at a given [Fe/H] and have systematically lower o…
We evaluate two dominant nuclear reaction rates and their uncertainties that affect 44Ti production in explosive nucleosynthesis. Experimentally we develop thick-target yields for the 40Ca(alpha,gamma)44Ti reaction at E(alpha) = 4.13, 4.54, and 5.36 MeV using gamma-ray spectroscopy. At the highest beam energy, we also performed an activation measurement that agrees with the thick target result. From the measured yields a stellar reaction rate was developed that is smaller than current statistical-model calculations and recent experimental results, which would suggest lower 44Ti production in s…
Mg is the alpha element of choice for Galactic population and chemical evolution studies as it is easily detectable in all late-type stars. Such studies require precise elemental abundances, and thus departures from LTE need to be accounted for. Our goal is to provide reliable departure coefficients and equivalent widths in non-LTE, and for reference in LTE, for diagnostic lines of Mg studied in late-type stars. These can be used e.g., to correct LTE spectra and abundances. Using the model atom built and tested in the preceding paper in this series, we performed non-LTE radiative transfer calc…
(Abridged) The abundances of alpha-elements are a powerful diagnostic of the star formation history and chemical evolution of a galaxy. Sulphur, being moderately volatile, can be reliably measured in the interstellar medium (ISM) of damped Ly-alpha galaxies and extragalactic HII regions. Measurements in stars of different metallicity in our Galaxy can then be readily compared to the abundances in external galaxies. Such a comparison is not possible for Si or Ca that suffer depletion onto dust in the ISM. Furthermore, studying sulphur is interesting because it probes nucleosynthetic conditions …
From exploratory studies and theoretical expectations it is known that simplifying approximations in spectroscopic analysis (LTE, 1D) lead to systematic biases of stellar parameters and abundances. These biases depend strongly on surface gravity, temperature, and, in particular, for LTE vs. non-LTE (NLTE) on metallicity of the stars. Here we analyse the [Mg/Fe] and [Fe/H] plane of a sample of 326 stars, comparing LTE and NLTE results obtained using 1D hydrostatic models and averaged <3D> models. We show that compared to the <3D>NLTE benchmark, all other three methods display increasing biases …
Determining ages of stars for reconstructing the history of the Milky Way remains one of the most difficult tasks in astrophysics. This involves knowing when it is possible to relate the stellar mass with its age and when it is not. The young $α-$rich (YAR) stars present such a case in which we are still not sure about their ages because they are relatively massive, implying young ages, but their abundances are $α-$enhanced, which implies old ages. We report the results from new observations from a long-term radial-velocity-monitoring campaign complemented with high-resolution spectroscopy, as…
We present an analysis of Spitzer-IRS observations of H2O, OH, HCN, C2H2, and CO2 emission, and Keck-NIRSPEC observations of CO emission, from a diverse sample of T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be circumstellar disks. We find that detections and strengths of most mid-IR molecular emission features are correlated with each other, suggesting a common origin and similar excitation conditions. We note that the line detection efficiency is anti-correlated with the 13/30 um SED spectral slope, which is a measure of the degree of grain settling in the disk atmosphere. We also note a correlation between detect…
Extreme helium stars (EHe stars) are hydrogen-deficient supergiants of spectral type A and B. They are believed to result from mergers in double degenerate systems. In this paper we present a detailed quantitative non-LTE spectral analysis for BD+10$^\circ$2179, a prototype of this rare class of stars, using UVES and FEROS spectra covering the range from $\sim$3100 to 10 000 Å. Atmosphere model computations were improved in two ways. First, since the UV metal line blanketing has a strong impact on the temperature-density stratification, we used the Atlas12 code. Additionally, We tested Atlas12…
We have undertaken the study of the elemental abundances and kinematic properties of a metal-poor sample of candidate thick-disk stars selected from the RAVE spectroscopic survey of bright stars to differentiate among the present scenarios of the formation of the thick disk. In this paper, we report on a sample of 214 red giant branch, 31 red clump/horizontal branch, and 74 main-sequence/sub-giant branch metal-poor stars, which serves to augment our previous sample of only giant stars. We find that the thick disk [alpha/Fe] ratios are enhanced, and have little variation (<0.1 dex), in agreemen…
We extend the grid of NLTE models presented in Paper II to explore variations in abundance pattern in two ways: 1) The adoption of the Asplund et al. (2009) (GASS10) abundances, 2) For stars of metallicity, [M/H], of -0.5, the adoption of a non-solar enhancement of alpha-elements by +0.3 dex. Moreover, our grid of synthetic spectral energy distributions (SEDs) is interpolated to a finer numerical resolution in both T_eff (Delta T_eff = 25 K) and log g (Delta log g = 0.25). We compare the values of T_eff and log g inferred from fitting LTE and Non-LTE SEDs to observed SEDs throughout the entire…
We present a grid of LTE atmospheric models and synthetic spectra that cover the spectral class range from mid-G to mid-K, and luminosity classes from V to III, that is dense in Teff sampling (Delta Teff=62.5 K), for stars of solar metallicity and moderately metal poor scaled solar abundance ([A/H]=0.0 and -0.5). All models have been computed with two choices of atomic line list: a) the "big" line lists of Kurucz (1992) that best reproduce the broad-band solar blue and near UV flux level, and b) the "small" lists of Kurucz & Peytremann (1975) that provide the best fit to the high resolution so…
We determine relative abundance ratios for the neutron-capture elements Zr, La, Ce, Nd, and Eu for a sample of 27 Galactic dwarf stars with -1.5 < [Fe/H] <-0.8. We also measure the iron-peak element Sc. These stars separate into three populations (low- and high-alpha halo and thick-disc stars) based on the [alpha/Fe] abundance ratio and their kinematics as discovered by Nissen & Schuster. We find differences between the low- and high-alpha groups in the abundance ratios of [Sc/Fe], [Zr/Fe], [La/Zr], [Y/Eu], and [Ba/Eu] when including Y and Ba from Nissen & Schuster. For all ratios except [La/Z…
This thesis is based on observations performed at the Vacuum Tower Telescope (Tenerife). We have used an infrared spectropolarimeter (TIP) and a Fabry-Perot spectrometer (G-FPI) from years 2004 to 2006. We have applied several imaging speckle reconstruction techniques, and compared them. We have studied chromospheric dynamics inside the solar disc and at the limb using Hαwith very high spatial, spectral and temporal resolution. Keywords (see full abstract for details): fibrils, surge, MHD waves, speckle, blind deconvolution, Fabry-Perot, mini-flares, cloud model, spicules in Halpha, spicules c…
The Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) routinely observes the Si IV resonance lines. When analyzing observations of these lines it has typically been assumed they form under optically thin conditions. This is likely valid for the quiescent Sun, but this assumption has also been applied to the more extreme flaring scenario. We used 36 electron beam driven radiation hydrodynamic solar flare simulations, computed using the RADYN code, to probe the validity of this assumption. Using these simulated atmospheres we solved the radiation transfer equations to obtain the non-LTE, non-equilibr…
We study the effects of non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) on the abundance analysis of barium, magnesium, and manganese from integrated light spectroscopy, as typically applied to the analysis of extra-galactic star clusters and galaxies. In this paper, our reference object is a synthetic simple stellar population (SSP) representing a mono-metallic alpha-enhanced globular cluster with the metallicity [Fe/H]=-2.0 and the age of 11 Gyr. We used the MULTI2.3 program to compute LTE and NLTE equivalent widths of spectral lines of Mg I, Mn I, and Ba II ions, which are commonly used in abund…
We analyze the oxygen abundances of a stellar sample representative of the two major Galactic populations: the thin and thick disks. The aim is to investigate the differences between members of the Galactic disks and to contribute to the understanding on the origin of oxygen chemical enrichment in the Galaxy. The analysis is based on the [O\,{\sc i}]=6300.30\,Å~ oxygen line in HR spectra ($R\sim$52,500) obtained from the GES Survey. By comparing the observed spectra with a theoretical dataset, computed in LTE with the SPECTRUM synthesis and ATLAS12 codes, we derive the oxygen abundances of 516…
The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has already begun to discover what will ultimately be thousands of exoplanets around nearby cool bright stars. These potential host stars must be well-understood to accurately characterize exoplanets at the individual and population levels. We present a catalogue of the chemo-kinematic properties of 2,218,434 stars in the TESS Candidate Target List using survey data from Gaia DR2, APOGEE, GALAH, RAVE, LAMOST, and photometrically-derived stellar properties from SkyMapper. We compute kinematic thin disc, thick disc, and halo membership probabiliti…
[Abridged] The infrared ro-vibrational emission lines from organic molecules in the inner regions of protoplanetary disks are unique probes of the physical and chemical structure of planet forming regions and the processes that shape them. The non-LTE excitation effects of carbon dioxide (CO2) are studied in a full disk model to evaluate: (i) what the emitting regions of the different CO2 ro-vibrational bands are; (ii) how the CO2 abundance can be best traced using CO2 ro-vibrational lines using future JWST data and; (iii) what the excitation and abundances tell us about the inner disk physics…
... We confirm the well-established differences for [$α$/Fe] at a given metallicity between the local thin and thick disks. For all the elements investigated, we find no chemical distinction between the bulge and the local thick disk, in agreement with our previous study of C, N and O but in contrast to other groups relying on literature values for nearby disk dwarf stars. For -1.5 < [Fe/H] < -0.3 exactly the same trend is followed by both the bulge and thick disk stars, with a star-to-star scatter of only 0.03 dex. Furthermore, both populations share the location of the knee in the [alpha/Fe]…
Eclipsing systems of massive stars allow one to explore the properties of their components in great detail. We perform a multi-wavelength, non-LTE analysis of the three components of the massive multiple system $δ$ Ori A, focusing on the fundamental stellar properties, stellar winds, and X-ray characteristics of the system. The primary's distance-independent parameters turn out to be characteristic for its spectral type (O9.5 II), but usage of the ${\rm \it Hipparcos}$ parallax yields surprisingly low values for the mass, radius, and luminosity. Consistent values follow only if $δ$ Ori lies at…
Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiations (10--117 nm) from host stars play important roles in the ionization, heating, and mass loss from exoplanet atmospheres. Together with the host star's Lyman-alpha and far-UV (117--170 nm) radiation, EUV radiation photodissociates important molecules, thereby changing the chemistry in exoplanet atmospheres. Since stellar EUV fluxes cannot now be measured and interstellar neutral hydrogen completely obscures stellar radiation between 40 and 91.2 nm, even for the nearest stars, we must estimate the unobservable EUV flux by indirect methods. New non-LTE semiempi…
Models and observations indicate that the impact of matter accreting onto the surface of young stars produces regions at the base of accretion columns, in which optically thin and thick plasma components coexist. Thus an accurate description of these impacts requires to account for the effects of absorption and emission of radiation. We study the effects of radiation emerging from shock-heated plasma in impact regions on the structure of the pre-shock downfalling material. We investigate if a significant absorption of radiation occurs and if it leads to a pre-shock heating of the accreting gas…
We perform a study of 62 solar analog stars to compute their effective temperatures (Teff) using the Balmer line wing fitting procedure and compare them with Teff values obtained using other commonly employed methods. We use observed H-alpha spectral lines and a fine grid of theoretical LTE model spectra calculated with the best available atomic data and most recent quantum theory. Our spectroscopic data are of very high quality and have been carefully normalized to recover the proper shape of the H-alpha line profile. We obtain Teff values with internal errors of about 25 K. Comparison of our…
For the first time, we present an extensive study of stars with individual non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) abundances for 17 chemical elements from Li to Eu in a sample of stars uniformly distributed over the $-2.62 \le$ [Fe/H] $\le +0.24$ metallicity range that is suitable for the Galactic chemical evolution research. The star sample has been kinematically selected to trace the Galactic thin and thick disks and halo. We find new and improve earlier results as follows. (i) The element-to-iron ratios for Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti form a MP plateau at a similar height of 0.3~dex, and the kne…
Realistic stellar atmospheric models of two typical metal-poor giant stars in Omega Centauri that include a chromosphere influence the formation of optical lines of Oxygen I: the forbidden lines (630nm, 636nm) and the infrared triplet (777.1-777.5 nm). One-dimensional semi-empirical non-LTE models are constructed based on observed Balmer lines. A full non-LTE formulation is applied in evaluating line strengths of O I including photoionization by the Lyman continuum and photoexcitation by Ly-alpha and Ly-beta. Chromospheric models (CHR) yield forbidden oxygen transitions that are stronger than …
The copper abundances of 29 metal-poor stars are determined based on the high resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra from the UVES spectragraph at the ESO VLT telescope. Our sample consists of the stars of the Galactic halo, thick- and thin-disk with [Fe/H] ranging from ~ -3.2 to ~ 0.0 dex. The non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) effects of Cu I lines are investigated, and line formation calculations are presented for an atomic model of copper including 97 terms and 1089 line transitions. We adopted the recently calculated photo-ionization cross-sections of Cu I, and investigate…
We present the results for a chemical abundance analysis between planet-hosting and stars without planets for 12 refractory elements for a total of 1111 nearby FGK dwarf stars observed within the context of the HARPS GTO programs. Of these stars, 109 are known to harbour high-mass planetary companions and 26 stars are hosting exclusively Neptunians and super-Earths. We found that the [X/Fe] ratios for Mg, Al, Si, Sc, and Ti both for giant and low-mass planet hosts are systematically higher than those of comparison stars at low metallicities ([Fe/H] < from -0.2 to 0.1 dex depending on the eleme…
