We present a grid of LTE atmospheric models and synthetic spectra that cover the spectral class range from mid-G to mid-K, and luminosity classes from V to III, that is dense in Teff sampling (Delta Teff=62.5 K), for stars of solar metallicity and moderately metal poor scaled solar abundance ([A/H]=0.0 and -0.5). All models have been computed with two choices of atomic line list: a) the "big" line lists of Kurucz (1992) that best reproduce the broad-band solar blue and near UV flux level, and b) the "small" lists of Kurucz & Peytremann (1975) that provide the best fit to the high resolution solar blue and near-UV spectrum. We compare our model SEDs to a sample of stars carefully selected from the large catalog of uniformly re-calibrated spectrophotometry of Burnashev (1985) with the goal of determining how the quality of fit varies with stellar parameters, especially in the historically troublesome blue and near-UV bands. We confirm that our models computed with the "big" line list recover the derived Teff values of the PHOENIX NextGen grid, but find that the models computed with the "small" line list provide greater internal self-consistency among different spectral bands, and closer agreement with the empirical Teff scale of Ramirez & Melendez (2005), but not to the interferometrically derived Teff values of Baines et al. (2010). We find no evidence that the near UV band discrepancy between models and observations for Arcturus (alpha Boo) reported by Short & Hauschildt (2003 and 2009) is pervasive, and that Arcturus may be peculiar in this regard.
We investigate the feasibility of the Si I infrared (IR) lines as Si abundance indicators for giant stars. We find that Si abundances obtained from the Si I IR lines based on the local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) analysis show large line-to-line scatter (mean value of 0.13dex), and are higher than those from the optical lines. However, when the non-LTE effects are taken into account, the line-to-line scatter reduces significantly (mean value of 0.06dex), and the Si abundances are consistent with those from the optical lines. The typical average non-LTE correction of [Si/Fe] for our sample …
We present observations of a solar plage in the millimeter-continuum with the ALMA and in the Ca 8542 and Na 5896 spectral lines with the Interferometric BIdimensional Spectrometer (IBIS). Our goal is to compare the measurement of local gas temperatures provided by ALMA with the temperature diagnostics provided by non-LTE inversions using STIC. In performing these inversions, we find that using column mass as the reference height scale, rather than optical depth, provides more reliable atmospheric profiles above the temperature minimum and that the treatment of non- LTE hydrogen ionization bri…
Aluminium plays a key role in studies of the chemical enrichment of the Galaxy and of globular clusters. However, strong deviations from LTE (non-LTE) are known to significantly affect the inferred abundances in giant and metal-poor stars. We present NLTE modeling of aluminium using recent and accurate atomic data, in particular utilizing new transition rates for collisions with hydrogen atoms, without the need for any astrophysically calibrated parameters. For the first time, we perform 3D NLTE modeling of aluminium lines in the solar spectrum. We also compute and make available extensive gri…
We investigated the off-limb spicules observed in the Mg II h and k lines by IRIS in a solar polar coronal hole. We analyzed the large dataset of obtained spectra to extract quantitative information about the line intensities, shifts, and widths. The observed Mg II line profiles are broad and double-peaked at lower altitudes, broad but flat-topped at middle altitudes, and narrow and single-peaked with the largest Doppler shifts at higher altitudes. We use 1D non-LTE vertical slab models (i.e. models which consider departures from Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium) in single-slab and multi-slab c…
Aiming at testing the validity of our magnesium atomic model and investigating the effects of non-local thermodynamical equilibrium (NLTE) on the formation of the H-band neutral magnesium lines, we derive the differential Mg abundances from selected transitions for 13 stars either adopting or relaxing the assumption of local thermodynamical equilibrium (LTE). Our analysis is based on high-resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio H-band spectra from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) and optical spectra from several instruments. The absolute differences between…
The new version of TLUSTY allows for the calculation of restricted NLTE in cool stars using pre-calculated opacity tables. We demonstrate that TLUSTY gives consistent results with MULTI, a well-tested code for NLTE in cool stars. We use TLUSTY to perform LTE and a series of NLTE calculations of Na, Mg, K and Ca using all combinations of 1, 2, 3 and the 4 elements mentioned above simultaneously in NLTE. In this work we take into account how departures from LTE in one element can affect others through changes in the opacities due to NLTE. We find that atomic Mg, which provides strong UV opacity,…
We present a study of departures from Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (LTE) in the formation of infra-red lines of Na I, Mg I, Al I, S I, K I and Sr II in unevolved stars of spectral types F,G,K and metallicities around the solar metallicity. The purpose of this investigation is to identify lines of these species that can be safely treated with the LTE approximation in the infra-red spectra of these types of stars. We employ a set of 40 stars observed with the GIANO spectrograph at the 3.5 m Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG) and previously investigated by Caffau et al. We were able to identif…
We explore the nature of carbon-rich ([C/Fe]_{1D,LTE} > +0.7), metal-poor ([Fe/H_{1D,LTE}] < -2.0) stars in the light of post 1D,LTE literature analyses, which provide 3D-1D and NLTE-LTE corrections for iron, and 3D-1D corrections for carbon (from the CH G-band, the only indicator at lowest [Fe/H]). High-excitation C~I lines are used to constrain 3D,NLTE corrections of G-band analyses. Corrections to the 1D,LTE compilations of Yoon et al. and Yong et al. yield 3D,LTE and 3D,NLTE Fe and C abundances. The number of CEMP-no stars in the Yoon et al. compilation (plus eight others) decreases from 1…
Probing the wind and evolutionary state of the quiescent luminous blue variable Var$\,$2 in the Galaxy M33: constraints from self-consistent non-LTE modeling
The infrared Mg I lines near 12 microns are a pair of emission lines which are magnetically sensitive and have been used to measure solar magnetic fields. Here we calculate the response of the Mg I 12.32 $μ$m line during a flare and find that in our modeling this line has a complicated behavior. At the beginning of the flare heating, this line shows an intensity dimming at the line center. The intensity then increases when heating continues, with increasing contributions from the heated layers in the chromosphere. The line formation height and the line width also increase as a result. As for t…
Convective motions in solar-type stellar atmospheres induce Doppler shifts that affect the strengths and shapes of spectral absorption lines and create slightly asymmetric line profiles. 1D LTE studies of elemental abundances are not able to reproduce this phenomenon, which becomes particularly important when modeling the impact of isotopic fine structure, like the subtle depression created by the 6Li isotope on the red wing of the Li I resonance doublet line. The purpose of this work is to provide corrections for the lithium abundance, A(Li), and the 6Li/7Li ratio that can easily be applied t…
We investigated the reliability of our silicon atomic model and the influence of non-local thermodynamical equilibrium (NLTE) on the formation of neutral silicon (Si I) lines in the near-infrared (near-IR) H-band. We derived the differential Si abundances for 13 sample stars with high-resolution H-band spectra from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), as well as from optical spectra, both under local thermodynamical equilibrium (LTE) and NLTE conditions. We found that the differences between the Si abundances derived from the H-band and from optical lines for th…
Synthesis performed under non Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (non-LTE) conditions usually overestimate stellar spectra. An approach widely adopted in the literature to reduce the excess of UV radiation consists of artificially increasing the continuum opacity by using multiplicative fudge factors, which are empirically derived to impose the synthetized spectrum to match the observed one. Although the method was initially developed to improve non-LTE synthesis of spectral lines, it has been recently employed to model solar spectral irradiance variability. Such irradiance reconstruction techniq…
Determining the effective temperatures (Teff) of red supergiants (RSGs) observationally is important in many fields of stellar physics and galactic astronomy, yet some significant difficulties remain due to model uncertainty originating majorly in the extended atmosphere of RSGs. Here we propose the line-depth ratio (LDR) method in which we use only Fe I lines. As opposed to the conventional LDR method with lines of multiple species involved, the LDR of this kind is insensitive to the surface gravity effects and expected to circumvent the uncertainty originating in the upper atmosphere of RSGs…

In the last decades, stellar atmosphere models have become a key tool in understanding massive stars. Applied for spectroscopic analysis, these models provide quantitative information on stellar wind properties as well as fundamental stellar parameters. The intricate non-LTE conditions in stellar winds dictate the development of adequate sophisticated model atmosphere codes. The increase in both, the computational power and our understanding of physical processes in stellar atmospheres, led to an increasing complexity in the models. As a result, codes emerged that can tackle a wide range of st…
Elemental abundances of the most metal-poor stars reflect the conditions in the early Galaxy and the properties of the first stars. We present a spectroscopic follow-up of two ultra metal-poor stars ([Fe/H]<-4.0) identified by the survey {\em Pristine}: Pristine 221.8781+9.7844 and Pristine 237.8588+12.5660 (hereafter Pr 221 and Pr 237, respectively). Combining data with earlier observations, we find a radial velocity of -149.25 $\pm$ 0.27 and -3.18 $\pm$ 0.19 km/s for Pr 221 and Pr 237, respectively, with no evidence of variability between 2018 and 2020. From a one-dimensional (1D) local ther…
The Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) has measured the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for several stars of types O, B, A, F, and G. These absolute fluxes from the CALSPEC database are fit with a new spectral grid computed from the ATLAS-APOGEE ATLAS9 model atmosphere database using a chi-square minimization technique in four parameters. The quality of the fits are compared for complete LTE grids by Castelli & Kurucz (CK04) and our new comprehensive LTE grid (BOSZ). For the cooler stars, the fits with the MARCS LTE grid are also evaluated, while the hottest stars are also fit wi…
