From the onset of high-speed optical communications, lithium niobite (LN) has been the material of choice for electro-optic modulators owing to its large electro-optic response, wide transparent window, excellent thermal stability and long-term material reliability. Conventional LN electro-optic modulators while continue to be the workhorse of the optoelectronic industry become progressively too bulky, expensive and power hungry to fully serve the needs of this industry rapidly progressing towards highly integrated, cost-effective and energy efficient components and circuits. Recently developed monolithic LN nanophotonic platform enables the realization of electro-optic modulators that are significantly improved in terms of compactness, bandwidth and energy efficiency, while still demanding relatively long, on the mm-scale, interaction lengths. Here we successfully deal with this challenge and demonstrate plasmonic electro-optic directional coupler switches consisting of two closely spaced nm-thin gold nanostripes monolithically fabricated on LN substrates that guide both coupled electromagnetic modes and electrical signals influencing their coupling and thereby enabling ultra-compact switching and modulatiofunctionalities. The extreme confinement of both slow-plasmon modes and electrostatic fields created by two nanostripes along with their nearly perfect spatial overlap allowed us to achieve a 90% modulation depth with 20-$μ$m-long switches characterized by a electro-optic modulation efficiency of 0.3 Vcm. Our monolithic LN plasmonic platform enables ultra-dense integration of high-performance active photonic components, enabling a wide range of cost-effective optical communication applications demanding $μ$m-scale footprints, ultrafast operation, robust design and high environmental stability.

We demonstrate efficient tuning of a monolithically integrated lithium niobate microdisk (LN) optical frequency microcomb. Utilizing the high optical quality (Q) factor (i.e., Q~7.1*10^6) of the microdisk, the microcomb spans over a spectral bandwidth of ~200 nm at a pump power as low as 20.4 mW. Combining the large eletro-optic coefficient of LN and optimum design of the geometry of microelectrodes, we demonstrate electro-optical tuning of the comb with a spectral range of 400 pm and a tuning efficiency of ~38 pm/100V.

We demonstrate up-conversion single-photon detectors based on integrated periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides, which incorporate two mode filters and a directional coupler. The two mode filters are optimized for the fiber-waveguide coupling efficiencies for 1550 nm and 1950 nm respectively while the directional coupler plays the role of wavelength combiner, making the overall system portable and low-cost. The two wavelengths pump each other in our detection system. We achieve detection efficiencies of 28% for 1550 nm and 27% for 1950 nm, respectively. This scheme provides an efficient…

Optical frequency combs have become a very powerful tool in metrology and beyond thanks to their ability to link radio frequencies with optical frequencies via a process known as self-referencing. Typical self-referencing is accomplished in two steps: the generation of an octave-spanning supercontinuum spectrum and the frequency-doubling of one part of that spectrum. Traditionally, these two steps have been performed by two separate optical components. With the advent of photonic integrated circuits, the combination of these two steps has become possible in a single small and monolithic chip. …

Advances in microresonator-based soliton generation promise chip-scale integration of optical frequency comb for applications spanning from time keeping to frequency synthesis. Miniaturized cavities harness Kerr nonlinearity and enable terahertz soliton repetition rates. However, such high repetition rates are not amenable to direct electronic detection. Here, we demonstrate hybrid Kerr and electro-optic microcombs using the lithium niobate thin film that exhibits both Kerr and Pockels nonlinearities. By interleaving the high-repetition-rate Kerr soliton comb with the low-repetition-rate elect…

Optical isolator is an indispensable component of almost any optical system and is used to protect a laser from unwanted reflections for phase-stable coherent operation. The development of chip-scale optical systems, powered by semiconductor lasers integrated on the same chip, has resulted in a need for a fully integrated optical isolator. However, conventional approaches based on application of magneto-optic materials to break the reciprocity and provide required isolation have significant challenges in terms of material processing and insertion loss. As a result, many magnetic-free approache…
