Using a recent breakthrough of Smith, we improve the results of Fouvry and Klüners on the solubility of the negative Pell equation. Let $\mathcal{D}$ denote the set of fundamental discriminants having no prime factors congruent to $3$ modulo $4$. Stevenhagen conjectured that the density of $D$ in $\mathcal{D}$ such that the negative Pell equation $x^2-Dy^2=-1$ is solvable with $x,y\in\mathbb{Z}$ is $58.1\%$, to the nearest tenth of a percent. By studying the distribution of the $8$-rank of narrow class groups $\mathrm{CL}^+(D)$ of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$, we prove that the infimum of this density is at least $53.8\%$.
We consider the negative polynomial Pell's equation $P^2(X)-D(X)Q^2(X)=-1$, where $D(X)\in \mathbb{Z}[X]$ be some fixed, monic, square-free, even degree polynomials. In this paper, we investigate the existence of polynomial solutions $P(X), \, Q(X)$ with integer coefficients.
By applying methods recently developed by A. Smith with regards to Goldfeld's conjecture, we show that the density of square-free integers $d$ in $[1, N]$ for which the negative Pell equation $x^2 - dy^2 = -1$ has a solution is as predicted by the model of Stevenhagen.
We discuss the origin, an improved definition and the key reciprocity property of the trilinear symbol introduced by Rédei in the study of 8-ranks of narrow class groups of quadratic number fields. It can be used to show that such 8-ranks are governed by Frobenius conditions on the primes dividing the discriminant, a fact used the recent work of A. Smith. In addition, we explain its impact in the progress towards proving my conjectural density for solvability of the negative Pell equation.
Let $p\equiv 1\bmod 4$ be a prime number. We use a number field variant of Vinogradov's method to prove density results about the following four arithmetic invariants: (i) $16$-rank of the class group $\mathrm{Cl}(-4p)$ of the imaginary quadratic number field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-4p})$; (ii) $8$-rank of the ordinary class group $\mathrm{Cl}(8p)$ of the real quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{8p})$; (iii) the solvability of the negative Pell equation $x^2 - 2py^2 = -1$ over the integers; (iv) $2$-part of the Tate-Šafarevič group of the congruent number elliptic curve $E_p: y^2 = x^3-p^2x$. Our res…
Let $K = \mathbb{Q}(ζ_3)$, where $ζ_3$ is a primitive root of unity. In this paper we study the distribution of integers $α\in \mathcal{O}_K$ for which the norm equation $N_{K(\sqrt[3]α)/K}(\mathbf{x}) = ζ_3$ is solvable for integers $\mathbf{x} \in \mathcal{O}_{K(\sqrt[3]α)}$. The analogous question for $ζ_2 = -1$ is the well-known negative Pell equation. We also address the natural generalization of Stevenhagen's conjecture on the negative Pell equation in this setting.
For all positive non-square integer multiplier k, there is an infinity of multiples of triangular numbers which are also triangular numbers. With a simple change of variables, these triangular numbers can be found using solutions of Pell equations. With some conditions on parities of fundamental solutions of the simple and generalized Pell equations, only odd solutions of the generalized Pell equation are retained to provide many infinitely solutions found on branches corresponding to each of the generalized fundamental solutions. General algebraic expressions of fundamental solutions of the P…
This short paper is concerned with polynomial Pell equations \[P^2-DQ^2=1,\] with $P,Q,D\in\Bbb C[X]$ and ${deg}(D)=2$. The main result shows that the polynomials $P$ and $Q$ are closely related to Chebyshev polynomials. We then investigate the existence of such polynomials in $\Bbb Z[X]$ specializing to fixed solutions of ordinary Pell equations over the integers.
The main purpose of this Note is to provide a non-trivial bound on certain Kloosterman sums as considered in the recent paper of E. Fouvry [F], leading to a small improvement of his result on the Pell equation.
A new algebraic object is introduced - recurrent fractions, which is an n-dimensional generalization of continued fractions. It is used to describe an algorithm for rational approximations of algebraic irrational numbers. Some parametrization for generalized Pell's equations is constructed.
D. S. Hong and P. Pongsriiam have provided a necessary and sufficient condition for the generating function for Fibonacci numbers (resp. the Lucas numbers) to be an integer value, for rational numbers. In other words, their results relate to the integer values of the generating functions of the sequences obtained from the integer solutions of Pell's equation $5x^{2}-y^{2}=\pm4$. If we change this Pell's equation to another type of Pell's equation, how will their results change? This is a natural and interesting problem. In this paper, we show that a result similar to theirs is obtained for the…
We examine the ranks of a subfamily of curves in a previous article, which are derived from the existence of solutions to certain Pell equations. We exhibit an abundance of curves of moderately large rank, and prove under mild conditions that these curves have rank at least three.
For an integer $d\geq 2$ which is not a square, we show that there is at most one value of the positive integer $X$ participating in the Pell equation $X^2-dY^2=\pm 1$ which is a Tribonacci number, with a few exceptions that we completely characterize.
We study new primality tests based on linear recurrent sequences of degree two exploiting a matricial approach. The classical Lucas test arises as a particular case and we see how it can be easily improved. Moreover, this approach shows clearly how the Lucas pseudoprimes are connected to the Pell equation and the Brahamagupta product. We also introduce a new specific primality test, which we will call generalized Pell test. We perform some numerical computations on the new primality tests and, for the generalized Pell test, we do not any pseudoprime up to $10^{10}$.
In this paper, we find all positive squarefree integers d such that the Pell equation X2-dY2 = +-1 has at least two positive integer solutions (X,Y) and (X',Y') such that both X and X' have Zeckendorf representations with at most two terms. This paper has been accepted for publication in SCIENCE CHINA Mathematics.
In this paper, we define a new product over $\mathbb{R}^{\infty}$, which allows us to obtain a group isomorphic to $\mathbb R^*$ with the usual product. This operation unexpectedly offers an interpretation of the Rédei rational functions, making more clear some of their properties, and leads to another product, which generates a group structure over the Pell hyperbola. Finally, we join together these results, in order to evaluate solutions of Pell equation in an original way.
Let $ \{L_n\}_{n\ge 0} $ be the sequence of Lucas numbers given by $ L_0=2, ~ L_1=1 $ and $ L_{n+2}=L_{n+1}+L_n $ for all $ n\ge 0 $. In the first paper, for an integer $d\geq 2$ which is square-free, we show that there is at most one value of the positive integer $x$ participating in the Pell equation $x^{2}-dy^{2}=\pm 1$ which is a product of two Lucas numbers, with a few exceptions that we completely characterize. Let $ \{P_m\}_{m\ge 0} $ be the sequence of Pell numbers given by $ P_0=0, ~ P_1=1 $ and $ P_{m+2}=2P_{m+1}+P_m $ for all $ m\ge 0 $. In the second paper, for an integer $d\geq 2$…
Given positive integers $j,k$, with $j\geq 2$, we show that there are positive integers $d,e$ such that $\sqrt{d}$ has continued fraction expansion $\sqrt{d}=[e,\overline{k,\dots,k,2e}]$, with period $j$, if and only if $k$ is even or $3\nmid j$, in which case we give closed formulae to find all such $d,e$ as well as the smallest solution in positive integers to the Fermat-Pell equation $X^2-dY^2=(-1)^j$.
We study a generalization of Pell's equation, whose coefficients are certain algebraic integers. Let $X_0=0$ and $X_n=\sqrt{2+X_{n-1}}$ for each $n\in \mathbb{Z}_{\ge 1}$. We study the $\mathbb{Z}[X_{n-1}]$-solutions of the equation $x^2-X_n^2y^2=1$. By imitating the solution to the classical Pell's equation, we introduce new continued fraction expansions for $X_n$ over $\mathbb{Z}[X_{n-1}]$ and obtain an explicit solution of the generalized Pell's equation. In addition, we show that our explicit solution generates all the solutions if and only if the answer to Weber's class number problem is …
Using Pascal triangle, we give a simple generalization to the so-called STRAND Puzzle solved by Srinivasa Ramanujan. Thus we are interested in computing the median, first and third quartiles of some integer valued distributions, arising naturally when extending partial sums of the arithmetic progression (triangular numbers) to tetrahedral numbers and beyond. We show this reduces to equations of Pell-Fermat type of higher order, which admit very few integer solutions, but for which, following Ramanujan's original idea, we can always find integer sequences of best approximation, in the Diophanti…
The cardinality of the set of $D\leqslant x$ for which the fundamental solution of the Pell equation $t^2-Du^2=1$ is less than $D^{\frac{1}{2}+α}$ with $α\in[\frac{1}{2},1]$ is studied and certain lower bounds are obtained, improving previous results of Fouvry by introducing the $q$-analogue of van der Corput method to algebraic exponential sums with smooth moduli.
We investigate the solvability of the Diophantine equation $x^2-my^2=\pm p$ in integers for certain integer $m$ and prime $p$. Then we apply these results to produce family of maximal real subfield of a cyclotomic field whose class number is strictly bigger than $1$.
The polynomial Pell equation is \[P^2 - D Q^2 = 1\] where $D$ is a given integer polynomial and the solutions $P, Q$ must be integer polynomials. A classical paper of Nathanson \cite{Nat} solved it when $D(x) = x^2 + d$. We show that the Rédei polynomials can be used in a very simple and direct way for providing these solutions. Moreover, this approach allows to find all the integer polynomial solutions when $D(x) = f^2(x) + d$, for any $f \in \mathbb Z[X]$ and $d \in \mathbb Z$, generalizing the result of Nathanson. We are also able to find solutions of some generalized polynomial Pell equati…
Let $b\ge 2$ be a given integer. In this paper, we show that there only finitely many positive integers $d$ which are not squares, such that the Pell equation $X^2-dY^2=1$ has two positive integer solutions $(X,Y)$ with the property that their $X$-coordinates are base $b$-repdigits. Recall that a base $b$-repdigit is a positive integer all whose digits have the same value when written in base $b$. We also give an upper bound on the largest such $d$ in terms of $b$.
In this study, we find continued fraction expansion of sqrt(d) when d=a^2+2a where a is positive integer. We consider the integer solutions of the Pell equation x^2-(a^2+2a)y^2=N when N={-1,+1,-4,+4}. We formulate the n-th solution (x_{n},y_{n}) by using the continued fraction expansion. We also formulate the n-th solution (x_{n},y_{n}) via the generalized Fibonacci and Lucas sequences.
In the classical theory, a famous by-product of the continued fraction expansion of quadratic irrational numbers $\sqrt{D}$ is the solution to Pell's equation for $D$. It is well-known that, once an integer solution to Pell's equation exists, we can use it to generate all other solutions $(u_n,v_n)_{n\in\Zee}$. Our object of interest is the polynomial version of Pell's equation, where the integers are replaced by polynomials with complex coefficients. We then investigate the factors of $v_n(t)$. In particular, we show that over the complex polynomials, there are only finitely many values of $n…
We study the quadratic integral points-that is, (S-)integral points defined over any extension of degree two of the base field-on a curve defined in P_3 by a system of two Pell equations. Such points belong to three families explicitly described, or belong to a finite set whose cardinality may be explicitly bounded in terms of the base field, the equations defining the curve and the set S. We exploit the peculiar geometry of the curve to adapt the proof of a theorem of Vojta, which in this case does not apply.
Let $ \{P_{n}\}_{n\geq 0} $ be the sequence of Padovan numbers defined by $ P_0=0 $, $ P_1 = P_2=1$ and $ P_{n+3}= P_{n+1} +P_n$ for all $ n\geq 0 $. In this paper, we find all positive square-free integers $ d $ such that the Pell equations $ x^2-dy^2 = \pm 1 $, $ X^2-dY^2=\pm 4 $ have at least two positive integer solutions $ (x,y) $ and $(x^{\prime}, y^{\prime})$, $ (X,Y) $ and $(X^{\prime}, Y^{\prime})$, respectively, such that each of $ x, ~x^{\prime}, ~X, ~X^{\prime} $ is a sum of two Padovan numbers.
Recently, Chappelon and Alfons\'ın defined the square Frobenius number of coprime numbers $m$ and $n$ to be the largest perfect square that cannot be expressed in the form $mx+ny$ for nonnegative integers $x$ and $y$. When $m$ and $n$ differ by $1$ or $2$, they found simple expressions if neither $m$ nor $n$ is a perfect square. If either $m$ or $n$ is a perfect square, they formulated some interesting conjectures which have an unexpected close connection with a known recursive sequence, related to the denominators of Farey fraction approximations to $\sqrt{2}$. In this note, we prove these co…
Two theorems are demonstrated giving analytical expressions of the fundamental solutions of the Pell equation $X^{2}-DY^{2}=1$ found by the method of continued fractions for two squarefree polynomial expressions of radicands of Richaud-Degert type $D$ of the form $D=\left(f\left(u\right)\right)^{2}\pm2^αn$, where $D$, $n>0$, $α\geq0,\in\mathbb{Z}$, and $f\left(u\right)>0,\in\mathbb{Z}$, any polynomial function of $u\in\mathbb{Z}$ such that $f\left(u\right)\equiv0\left(mod\,\left(2^{α-1}n\right)\right)$ or $f\left(u\right)\equiv\left(2^{α-2}n\right)\left(mod\,\left(2^{α-1}n\right)\right)$.
Equivalence classes of solutions of the Diophantine equation $a^2+mb^2=c^2$ form an infinitely generated abelian group $G_m$, where $m$ is a fixed square-free positive integer. Solutions of Pell's equation $x^2-my^2=1$ generate a subgroup $P_m$ of $G_m$. We prove that $P_m$ and $G_m/P_m$ have infinite rank for all $m>1$. We also give several examples of $m$ for which $G_m/P_m$ has nontrivial torsion.
In this study, we find continued fraction expansion of sqrt(d) when d=a^2b^2-b and d=a^2b^2-2b where a and b are positive integers. We consider the integer solutions of the Pell equations x^2-(a^2b^2-b)y^2=N and x^2-(a^2b^2-2b)y^2=N when N is {+-1,+-4}. We formulate the n-th solution (x_{n},y_{n}) by using the continued fraction expansion. We also formulate the n-th solution (x_{n},y_{n}) in terms of generalized Fibonacci and Lucas sequences.
For an integer $k\geq 2$, let $\{F^{(k)}_{n}\}_{n\geqslant 2-k}$ be the $ k$--generalized Fibonacci sequence which starts with $0, \ldots, 0,1$ (a total of $k$ terms) and for which each term afterwards is the sum of the $k$ preceding terms. In this paper, for an integer $d\geq 2$ which is square free, we show that there is at most one value of the positive integer $x$ participating in the Pell equation $x^{2}-dy^{2} =\pm 1$ which is a $k$--generalized Fibonacci number, with a couple of parametric exceptions which we completely characterise. This paper extends previous work from [17] for the ca…
Periodic integer continued fractions (PICFs) are generalization of the regular periodic continued fractions (RPCFs). It is classical that a RPCF expansion of an irrational number is unique. However, it is no longer unique for a PICF expansion. Hence it is a natural problem to determine all PICF expansions of irrational numbers. In this paper, we determine certain type PICF expansions of square roots of positive square-free integers. To obtain this result, it plays an important role to determine integer points on certain PCF varieties appeared in Brock-Elkies-Jordan. As an application of these …
Let $k\geq 2$ and let $(P_{n}^{(k)})_{n\geq 2-k}$ be $k$-generalized Pell sequence defined by \begin{equation*}P_{n}^{(k)}=2P_{n-1}^{(k)}+P_{n-2}^{(k)}+...+P_{n-k}^{(k)}\end{equation*} for $n\geq 2$ with initial conditions \begin{equation*}P_{-(k-2)}^{(k)}=P_{-(k-3)}^{(k)}=\cdot \cdot \cdot =P_{-1}^{(k)}=P_{0}^{(k)}=0,P_{1}^{(k)}=1. \end{equation*} In this paper, we deal with the Diophantine equation \begin{equation*}P_{n}^{(k)}=d\left( \frac{10^{m}-1}{9}\right)\end{equation*} in positive integers $n,m,k,d$ with $k\geq 2,$ $m\geq 2$ and $1\leq d\leq 9$. We will show that repdigits with at leas…
Square roots $s$ of sums of $M$ consecutive integer squares starting from $a^{2}\geq1$ are integers if $M\equiv0,9,24$ or $33(mod\,72)$; or $M\equiv1,2$ or $16(mod\,24)$; or $M\equiv11(mod\,12)$ and cannot be integers if $M\equiv3,5,6,7,8$ or $10(mod\,12)$. Finding all solutions with $s$ integer requires to solve a Diophantine quadratic equation in variables $a$ and $s$ with $M$ as a parameter. If $M$ is not a square integer, the Diophantine quadratic equation in variables $a$ and $s$ is transformed into a generalized Pell equation whose form depends on the $M(mod\,4)$ congruent value, and who…
Finding polynomial solutions to Pell's equation is of interest as such solutions sometimes allow the fundamental units to be determined in an infinite class of real quadratic fields. In this paper, for each triple of positive integers $(c,h,f)$ satisfying \[c^{2}-f\,h^{2}=1, \] where $(c,h)$ are the smallest pair of integers satisfying this equation, several sets of polynomials $(c(t),h(t),f(t))$ which satisfy \[c(t)^{2}-f(t)\,h(t)^{2}=1 \text{ and } (c(0),h(0),f(0)) = (c,h,f) \] are derived. Moreover, it is shown that the pair $(c(t),h(t))$ constitute the fundamental polynomial solution to th…
Solutions of Pell's equation and hypergeometric series identities are used to study series expansions for $\sqrt{p}$ where $p$ are arbitrary prime numbers. Numerous fast convergent series expansions for this family of irrational numbers are established.
Let S be a smooth irreducible curve defined over a number field k and consider an abelian scheme A over S and a curve C inside A, both defined over k. In previous works, we proved that when A is a fibered product of elliptic schemes, if C is not contained in a proper subgroup scheme of A, then it contains at most finitely many points that belong to a flat subgroup scheme of codimension at least 2. In this article, we continue our investigation and settle the crucial case of powers of simple abelian schemes of relative dimension g bigger or equal than 2. This, combined with the above mentioned …
Let $\ k$ be a natural number and $d=k^{2}\pm 4$ or $k^{2}\pm 1$. In this paper, by using continued fraction expansion of $\sqrt{d},$ we find fundamental solution of the equations $x^{2}-dy^{2}=\pm 1$ and we get all positive integer solutions of the equations $x^{2}-dy^{2}=\pm 1$ in terms of generalized Fibonacci and Lucas sequences. Moreover, we find all positive integer solutions of the equations $x^{2}-dy^{2}=\pm 4$ in terms of generalized Fibonacci and Lucas sequences. Although some of the results are well known, we think our method is elementary and different from the others.
Two well-studied Diophantine equations are those of Pythagorean triples and elliptic curves, for the first we have a parametrization through rational points on the unit circle, and for the second we have a structure theorem for the group of rational solutions. Recently, Yekutieli discussed a connection between these two problems, and described the group structure of Pythagorean triples and the number of triples for a given hypotenuse. In arXiv:2112.03663 we generalized these methods and results to Pell's equation. We find a similar group structure and count on the number of solutions for a giv…
In this paper, we find all the solutions of the Diophantine equation $P_\ell + P_m +P_n=2^a$, in nonnegative integer variables $(n,m,\ell, a)$ where $P_k$ is the $k$-th term of the Pell sequence $\{P_n\}_{n\ge 0}$ given by $P_0=0$, $P_1=1$ and $P_{n+1}=2P_{n}+ P_{n-1}$ for all $n\geq 1$.
In this paper we give describe a new connection between the dilogarithm function and solutions to Pell's equation $x^2-ny^2 = \pm 1$. For each solution $x,y$ to Pell's equation we obtain a dilogarithm identity whose terms are given by the continued fraction expansion of the associated unit $x+y\sqrt{n} \in \Z[\sqrt{n}]$. We further show that Ramanujan's dilogarithm value-identities correspond to an identity for the regular ideal hyperbolic hexagon.
The purpose of this article is to give the solutions of the inverse problem for Pellian equations. For any rational number $0< a/b < 1$, the fundamental discriminants $D$ satisfying $(\lfloor \sqrt{D} \rfloor b + a)^2 - D b^2 = 4$ are given in terms of a quadratic progression. There were studies about this problem based on symmetric sequences $\{a_1,\...,a_{l-1}\}$ and periodic continued fractions $[a_0,\bar{a_1,\...,a_{l-1},a_l}]$, but in this article we solve the problem in a completely different way with simpler parameters. The result is obtained by measuring the quality of approximation of…
The aim of this expository article is twofold. The first is to introduce several polynomials of one variable as well as two variables defined on the positive integers with values as congruent numbers. The second is to present connections between Pythagorean triples and the Pell equation $x^2-dy^2=1$ plus its analogous counterpart $x^2-dy^2=-1$ which give rise to congruent numbers n with arbitrarily many prime factors.
Let k>=2 and let (Q_{n}^{(k)})_{n>=2-k} be the k-generalized Pell sequence defined by Q_{n}^{(k)}=2Q_{n-1}^{(k)}+Q_{n-2}^{(k)}+...+Q_{n-k}^{(k)} for n>=2 with initial conditions Q_{-(k-2)}^{(k)}=Q_{-(k-3)}^{(k)}=...=Q_{-1}^{(k)}=0, Q_{0}^{(k)}=2,Q_{1}^{(k)}=2. In this paper, we solve the Diophantine equation Q_{n}^{(k)}=y^{m} in positive integers n,m,y,k with m,y,k>=2. We show that all solutions (n,m,y) of this equation in positive integers n,m,y,k such that 2<=y<=100 are given by (n,m,y)=(3,2,4),(3,4,2) for k>=3. Namely, Q_{3}^{(k)}=16=2^4=4^2 for k>=3.
