Single-layer superconductors are ideal materials for fabricating superconducting nano devices. However, up to date, very few single-layer elemental superconductors have been predicted and especially no one has been successfully synthesized yet. Here, using crystal structure search techniques and ab initio calculations, we predict that a single-layer planar carbon sheet with 4- and 8-membered rings called T-graphene is a new intrinsic elemental superconductor with superconducting critical temperature (Tc) up to around 20.8 K. More importantly, we propose a synthesis route to obtain such a single-layer T-graphene, that is, a T-graphene potassium intercalation compound (C4K with P4/mmm symmetry) is firstly synthesized at high pressure (>11.5GPa) and then quenched to ambient condition; and finally, the single-layer T-graphene can be either exfoliated using the electrochemical method from the bulk C4K, or peeled off from bulk T-graphite C4, where C4 can be obtained from C4K by evaporating the K atoms. Interestingly, we find that the calculated Tc of C4K is about 30.4K at 0GPa, which sets a new record for layered carbon-based superconductors. The present findings add a new class of carbon based superconductors. In particular, once the single-layer T-graphene is synthesized, it can pave the way for fabricating superconducting devices together with other 2D materials using the layer-by-layer growth techniques.
It is promising to apply quantum-mechanically confined graphene systems in field-effect transistors. High stability, superior performance, and large-scale integration are the main challenges facing the practical application of graphene transistors. Our understandings of the adatom-graphene interaction combined with recent progress in the nanofabrication technology indicate that very stable and high-quality graphene nanostripes could be integrated in substrate-supported functionalized (hydrogenated or fluorinated) graphene using electron-beam lithography. We also propose that parallelizing a co…
The synthesis of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) of desired diameters and chiralities is critical to the design of nanoscale electronic devices with desired properties.1-6 The existing methods are based on self-assembly, 7-16 therefore lacking the control over their diameters and chiralities. The present work reports a direct route to roll graphene. Specifically, we found that the electrostatic deposition of graphene yielded: (i) flat graphene layers under high vacuum (10-7 Torr), (ii) completely scrolled graphene under hydrogen atmosphere, (iii) partially scrolled graphene under nitroge…
Nanocomposite material proves to be the best candidate to match todays technological need as fascinating properties can be achieved by combining two or more nanomaterials. In particular, graphene metal nanocomposites have attracted enormous interest for their prospective use in various fields, including electronics and electrical and energy related areas. However, for the utmost use of potential of graphene, it has to be homogenously embedded into met…
A simple solvent exchange method is introduced to prepare high-concentration and surfactant-free graphene liquid dispersion. Natural graphite flakes are first exfoliated into graphene in dimethylformamide (DMF). DMF is then exchanged by terpineol through distillation, relying on their large difference in boiling points. Graphene can then be concentrated thanks to the volume difference between DMF and terpineol. The concentrated graphene dispersions are used to fabricate transparent conductive thin films, which possess comparable properties to those prepared by more complex methods.
Ab initio density functional theory (DFT) simulations were used to investigate an influence of electric field, parallel to single and multilayer graphene on its electron dispersion relations close to K point. It was shown that for both single layer and AAAA stacking multilayer graphene under influence of parallel field the dispersion relations transform to nonlinear. The effect, associated with the hexagonal symmetry breaking, opens new route to high speed transistors and logical devices working in Dirac regime. The implementation of such device is presented.
Using the ab initio pseudopotential density functional method, we investigate the functionalization of halogen molecules into graphene-based nanostructures with zigzag and armchair edges. We find that halogen molecules adsorb through chemisorption on the zigzag edge carbon atoms with a binding energy of ~1-5 eV and their adsorption on a perfect zigzag edge is preferred, in sharp contrast to physisorption on the armchair edge and elsewhere where they adsorb with a binding energy of ~0.07 eV. We suggest that our findings would be utilized for an approach to the separation of zigzag graphene nano…
We have investigated epitaxial graphene films grown on SiC(0001) by annealing in an atmosphere of Ar instead of vacuum. Using AFM and LEEM we observe a significantly improved surface morphology and graphene domain size. Hall measurements on monolayer graphene films show a carrier mobility of around 1000 cm^2/Vs at room temperature and 2000 cm^2/Vs at 27K. The growth process introduced here establishes the synthesis of graphene films on a technologically viable basis.
The substrate temperature required for synthesis of graphene in an arc discharge plasma was studied. It was shown that an increase of copper substrate temperature up to the melting point leads to an increase in the amount of graphene production and the quality of graphene sheets. Favorable range of substrate temperatures for arc-based graphene synthesis was determined, and it is in a relatively narrow range of about 1210-1340 K.
Bulk applications of graphene in fields such as advanced composites, conductive ink, and energy storage require cheap and scalable graphene. Fortunately, in the last decade, liquid-phase exfoliation of graphite to give pristine graphene has been thought as a promising way to massive production of graphene at high efficiency and low cost, in terms of the cheap and abundant graphite source and a variety of cost-effective exfoliation techniques. Though many exfoliation techniques are available so far, this article will highlight the recent progress of fluid dynamics route which emerges as a promi…
We report a first-principles based study of mesoscopic quantum transport in chemically doped graphene nanoribbons with a width up to 10 nm. The occurrence of quasibound states related to boron impurities results in mobility gaps as large as 1 eV, driven by strong electron-hole asymmetrical backscattering phenomena. This phenomenon opens new ways to overcome current limitations of graphene-based devices through the fabrication of chemically-doped graphene nanoribbons with sizes within the reach of conventional lithography.
Graphene oxide (GO) is regarded as one typical two-dimension structured oxygenated planar molecular material. Researchers across multiple disciplines have paid enormous attention to it due to unique physiochemical properties. However, models used to describe the structure of GO are still in argument and ongoing to update. Currently, synthesis methods for massive production are seemingly abundant but in fact, dominated by few thought systems. We herein aim to give a mini but critical review over the synthesis of graphene oxide as well as its structure, involving relative peer work.
We have investigated the quantum capacitance ($C_Q$) in functionalized graphene, modified with ad-atoms from different groups in the periodic table. Changes in the electronic band structure of graphene upon functionalization and subsequently the quantum capacitance ($C_Q$) of the modified graphene were systematically analyzed using density functional theory(DFT) calculations. We observed that the quantum capacitance can be enhanced significantly by means of controlled doping of N, Cl and P ad-atoms in the pristine graphene surface. These ad-atoms are behaving as magnetic impurities in the syst…
We report on the synthesis of CdSe quantum dots on a graphene surface by an electrochemical deposition method. By using a mesoporous silica film formed on the graphene surface as a template and a potential equalizer between the edge/defect sites and the basal plane of the graphene, CdSe quantum dots can be grown on the basal plane into a regular hexagonal array.
The development of selective high precision chemical functionalization strategies for device fabrication, in conjunction with associated techniques for patterning graphene wafers with atomic accuracy would provide the necessary basis for a post-CMOS manufacturing technology. This requires a thorough understanding of the principles governing the reactivity and patterning of graphene at the sub-nanometer length scale. This article reviews our quest to delineate the principles of graphene chemistry - that is, the chemistry at the Dirac point and beyond, and the effect of covalent chemistry on the…
We report on a new method for graphene synthesis and assessment of the properties of the resulting large-area graphene layers. Graphene was produced by the high pressure - high temperature growth from the natural graphitic source by utilizing the molten Fe-Ni catalysts for dissolution of carbon. The resulting large-area graphene flakes were transferred to the silicon - silicon oxide substrates for the spectroscopic micro-Raman and scanning electron microscopy inspection. The analysis of the G peak, D, T+D and 2D bands in the Raman spectra under the 488-nm laser excitation indicate that the hig…

In this paper, we present a brief review of available CVD methods for graphene synthesis. We also discuss scalable methods to transfer graphene onto desired substrates. Finally, we discuss potential applications that would benefit from a fully scaled, semic…
Owing to wide variety of applications of graphene, high-quality and economical way of synthesizing graphene is highly desirable. In this study, we report a cost effective and simple approach to production of high-quality graphene. Here the synthesis route is based on electrochemical exfoliation of graphite. Instead of using strong acids (which oxidise and damage the geometrical topology of graphene), we have used alkaline solution (KOH dissolved in water) as electrolyte. TEM analysis shows that as prepared graphene has 1-4 layers and large lateral size (up to ~18 micrometer). Raman analysis sh…
Intercalation of atomic species through epitaxial graphene layers began only a few years following its initial report in 2004. The impact of intercalation on the electronic properties of the graphene is well known; however, the intercalant itself can also exhibit intriguing properties not found in nature. This suggests that a shift in the focus of epitaxial graphene intercalation studies may lead to fruitful exploration of many new forms of traditionally 3D materials. In the following forward-looking review, we summarize the primary techniques used to achieve and characterize EG intercalation,…
We introduce a novel modality in the CVD growth of graphene which combines the cold-wall and hot-wall reaction chambers. This hybrid mode preserves the advantages of a cold-wall chamber as the fast growth and low fuel consumption, but boosts the quality of the growth towards conventional CVD with hot-wall chambers. The synthesized graphene is uniform and monolayer. The electronic transport measurements shows great improvements in charge carrier mobility compared to graphene synthesized in a normal cold-wall reaction chamber. Our results promise the development of a fast and cost-efficient grow…
Graphene intercalation materials are potentially promising for the implementation of the ultra-low power, excitonic-condensate-based Bilayer pseudoSpin Field-Effect Transistor (BiSFET) concept, as well as other novel device concepts requiring a graphene interlayer dielectric. Using density functional theory (DFT) we study the structural and electronic properties of bilayer graphene intercalated with iodine monochloride (ICl) and iodine monobromide (IBr). We determine the structural configuration of ICl and IBr graphene intercalation compounds (GICs). We also conduct an in-depth exploration of …
Ultrasonication is widely used to exfoliate two dimensional (2D) van der Waals layered materials such as graphene. Its fundamental mechanism, inertial cavitation, is poorly understood and often ignored in ultrasonication strategies resulting in low exfoliation rates, low material yields and wide flake size distributions, making the graphene dispersions produced by ultrasonication less economically viable. Here we report that few-layer graphene yields of up to 18% in three hours without introduction of basal plane defects can be achieved by optimising inertial cavitation during ultrasonication.…
Atomically thin crystals have recently been the focus of attention in particular after the synthesis of graphene, a monolayer hexagonal crystal structure of carbon. In this novel material class the chemically derived graphenes have attracted tremendous interest. It was shown that although bulk graphite is a chemically inert material, the surface of single layer graphene is rather reactive against individual atoms. So far, synthesis of several graphene derivatives have been reported such as hydrogenated graphene "graphane" (CH), fluorographene (CF) and chlorographene (CCl). Moreover, the stabil…
A novel route for the synthesis of large area graphene by an indigenously built electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) setup has been reported in this work. A unique 2.45 GHz permanent magnet type ECR PECVD system has been designed and developed for the growth of various nano-structures and films. The apparatus has a unique advantage to synthesize large area graphene at much lower additional substrate heating than heat supplied by an external oven in conventional thermal CVD method. A major amount of heat is supplied here by ECR plasma. Polycrystal…
Developing graphene-based nanoelectronics hinges on opening a band gap in the electronic structure of graphene, which is commonly achieved by breaking the inversion symmetry of the graphene lattice via an electric field (gate bias) or asymmetric doping of graphene layers. Here we introduce a new design strategy that places a bilayer graphene sheet sandwiched between two cladding layers of materials that possess strong spin-orbit coupling (e.g., Bi2Te3). Our ab initio and tight-binding calculations show that proximity enhanced spin-orbit coupling effect opens a large (44 meV) band gap in bilaye…
We systematically investigate the chemical vapor deposition growth of graphene on Ge(110) as a function of the deposition temperature close to the Ge melting point. By merging spectroscopic and morphological information, we find that the quality of graphene films depends critically on the growth temperature improving significantly by increasing this temperature in the 910-930 °C range. We correlate the abrupt improvement of the graphene quality to the formation of a quasi-liquid Ge surface occurring in the same temperature range, which determines increased atom diffusivity and sublimation rate…
A method to produce suspensions of graphene sheets by combining solution-based bromine intercalation and mild sonochemical exfoliation is presented. Ultrasonic treatment of graphite in water leads to the formation of suspensions of graphite flakes. The delamination is dramatically improved by intercalation of bromine into the graphite before sonication. The bromine intercalation was verified by Raman spectroscopy as well as by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show an almost ten times lower interlayer binding energy after introducing Br2 i…
Adsorption is one important way applied to water decontamination, where carbon is commonly used as highly effective absorbent. Carbon of different morphologies and structures normally demonstrate distinct capabilities to adsorption-typed decontaminations. Graphene oxide is regarded as the oxidative derivative of graphene, maintaining its 2D morphology-featuring structure while location-dependently immobilized with a large amount of various oxygen-involving functional moieties on both sides. Free-standing graphene oxide tends to fully unfold in water and behave in macromolecular-like Brownian m…
The growth of graphene on copper by atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition in a system free of pumping equipment is investigated. The emphasis is put on the necessity of hydrogen presence during graphene synthesis and cooling. In the absence of hydrogen during the growth step or cooling at slow rate, weak carbon coverage, consisting mostly of oxidized and amorphous carbon, is obtained on the copper catalyst. The oxidation originates from the inevitable occurrence of residual oxidizing impurities in the reactor's atmosphere. Graphene with appreciable coverage can be grown within the vac…
A high temperature for some catalytic reactions like synthesis of large area and high quality graphene is required. The mentioned graphene can be obtained by a chemical vapour deposition (CVD) process on copper foil at 800 1000. Here, we describe a room temperature synthesis method from different carbon sources for the first time, including acetylene, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, on copper foil by using a heuristic method which was inspired from the role of some electronic promoters in catalyst science. Promoters are substances that increase the catalytic activity, but they are not cata…
Graphene- the wonder material has attracted a great deal of attention from varied fields of condensed matter physics, materials science and chemistry in recent times. Its 2D atomic layer structure and unique electronic band structure makes it attractive for many applications. Its high carrier mobility, high electrical and thermal conductivity make it an exciting material. However, its applicability cannot be effectively realised unless facile techniques to synthesize high quality, large area graphene are developed in a cost effective way. Besides that a great deal of effort is required to deve…
We synthesized centimeter-scale single- to few-layer graphene (FLG) films via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on Ni foils. We demonstrates that the precipitation mechanism may not be the only important mechanism in the formation of graphene by CVD in Ni system, and that controlling the cooling rate in the CVD process may not be the appropriate way to control the thickness of graphene films. In addition, we are the first to demonstrate the transfer of centimeter-scale FLG from Ni foil to transparent flexible polyethylene terephthalate substrates via an efficient roll-to-roll process. Comparing …
High-kinetic energy impacts between inorganic surfaces and molecular beams seeded by organics represent a fundamental case study in materials science, most notably when they activate chemical-physical processes leading to nanocrystals growth. Here we demonstrate single-layer graphene synthesis on copper by C60 supersonic molecular beam (SuMBE) epitaxy at 645 °C, with the possibility of further reduction. Using a variety of electron spectroscopy and microscopy techniques, and first-principles simulations, we describe the chemical-physical mechanisms activated by SuMBE resulting in graphene grow…
Novel route for the establishing of magnetism in realistic oxidized graphene nanoribbons is proposed. Modelling of the migration of hydroxyl groups from central part to the zig-zag edges of graphene nanoribbons passivated by oxygen are performed with using density functional theory. The presence of hydroxyl groups near the edges leads formation of dangling bonds there instead saturated due to oxidation and repairs of magnetism diminished by edges oxidation. The route of manufacturing and stability of new type of magnetic graphene nanoribbons are also discussed.
As a viable candidate for an all-carbon post-CMOS electronics revolution, epitaxial graphene has attracted significant attention. A new way to synthesize high quality epitaxial graphene, namely "face-to-face" method, has been reported in this paper. The structure and morphologies of the samples are characterized by low-energy electron diffraction, atomic force microscopy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The grown samples show bett…
Few-layer graphene (FLG) is grown on copper and nickel substrates at high rates using a novel flame synthesis method in open-atmosphere environments. Transmittance and resistance properties of the transferred films are similar to those grown by other methods, but the concentration of oxygen, as assessed by XPS, is actually less than that for CVD-grown graphene under near vacuum conditions. The method involves utilizing a multi-element inverse-diffusion-flame burner, where post-flame species and temperatures are radially-uniform upon deposition at a substrate. Advantages of the flame synthesis …
The transfer-free synthesis of high-quality, large-area graphene on a given dielectric substrate, which is highly desirable for device applications, remains a significant challenge. In this paper, we report on a simple rapid thermal treatment method for the fast and direct growth of high-quality, large-scale monolayer graphene on a SiO2/Si substrate from solid carbon sources. The stack structure of solid carbon layer/copper film/SiO2 is adopted in the RTT process. The inserted copper film does not only act as an active catalyst for the carbon precursor but also serves as a "filter" that preven…
Graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) share the same atomic structure of hexagonal carbon lattice. Yet, their synthesis differs in many aspects, including the shape and size of the catalyst. Here, we demonstrate a floating-catalyst chemical vapor deposition (FCCVD) technique for substrate-free, single-step growth of CNT-graphene heterostructures (CNT-G-H) using ethylene as a carbon source. The formation of CNT-G-H is directly evidenced by lattice-resolved (scanning) transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and electron diffraction experiments, corroborated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Our e…
Germanium is emerging as the substrate of choice for the growth of graphene in CMOS-compatible processes. For future application in next generation devices the accurate control over the properties of high-quality graphene synthesized on Ge surfaces, such as number of layers and domain size, is of paramount importance. Here we investigate the role of the process gas flows on the CVD growth of graphene on Ge(100). The quality and morphology of the deposited material is assessed by using microRaman spectroscopy, x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, scanning electron and atomic force microscopies. We…
In this work we shed light on the early stage of the chemical vapor deposition of graphene on Ge(001) surfaces. By a combined use of microRaman and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopies, and scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we were able to individuate a carbon precursor phase to graphene nucleation which coexists with small graphene domains. This precursor phase is made of C aggregates with different size, shape and local ordering which are not fully sp2 hybridized. In some atomic size regions these aggregates show a linear arrangement of atoms as well as the first signature of the…
Graphene has been attracting great interest because of its distinctive band structure and physical properties. Today, graphene is limited to small sizes because it is produced mostly by exfoliating graphite. We grew large-area graphene films of the order of centimeters on copper substrates by chemical vapor deposition using methane. The films are predominantly single layer graphene with a small percentage (less than 5%) of the area having few layers, and are continuous across copper surface steps and grain boundaries. The low solubility of carbon in copper appears to help make this growth proc…
ABC-stacked trilayer graphene has exhibited a variety of correlated phenomena owing to its relatively flat bands and gate-tunable bandgap. However, convenient methods are still lacking for identifying ABC graphene with nanometer-scale resolution. Here we demonstrate that the scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM) working in ambient conditions can provide quick recognition of ABC trilayer graphene with no ambiguity and excellent resolution (~20 nm). The recognition is based on the difference in their near-field infrared (IR) responses between the ABA and ABC trilayers. We show that in mo…
Large scale synthesis of single layer graphene (SLG) by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has received a lot of attention recently. However, CVD synthesis of AB stacked bi-layer graphene (BLG) is still a challenging work. Here we report synthesis of BLG homogeneously in large area by thermal CVD. The 2D Raman band of CVD BLG splits into four components, suggesting splitting of electronic bands due to strong interlayer coupling. The splitting of electronic bands in CVD BLG is further evidenced by the study of near infrared (NIR) absorption and carrier dynamics probed by transient absorption spect…
Herein, an effort has given to sheds light on the effects of plasma process parameters on the growth of vertical graphene nanosheets (VGNs) by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD. The parameters include substrate temperature, microwave power and distance between plasma sources to substrate. The significant influence of these variable parameters is observed on the morphology, growth rate and crystallinity. Thus these parameters are found to be deciding factors, which determine the surface reaction and growth kinetics that governed the final structure and controlled morphology of VG…
We use ab initio calculations to examine thermodynamic factors that could promote the formation of recently proposed unique oP10-FeB4 and oP12-FeB2 compounds. We demonstrate that these compact boron-rich phases are stabilized further under pressure. We also show that chromium tetraboride is more stable in the new oP10 rather than the reported oI10 structure which opens up the possibility of realizing an oP10-Fe(x)Cr(1-x)B4 pseudobinary material. In addition to exhibiting remarkable electronic features, oP10-FeB4 and oP12-FeB2 are expected to be harder than the known Fe-B compounds commonly use…
La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ polycrystalline samples have been prepared using different synthesis routes. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) confirms that the samples are of single phase with R$\bar{3}$c space group. The surface morphology and particle size has been measured using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). Magnetic measurement shows that the magnetization in the materials are affected by low crystallite size which destroys the spin ordering due to strain at grain boundaries and in turn also lead to reduction in magnetization as well as an enhanced coercivity in the material.
We developed means to produce wafer scale, high-quality graphene films as large as 3 inch wafer size on Ni and Cu films under ambient-pressure and transfer them onto arbitrary substrates through instantaneous etching of metal layers. We also demonstrated the applications of the large-area graphene films for the batch fabrication of field-effect transistor (FET) arrays and stretchable strain gauges showing extraordinary performances. Transistors showed the hole and electron mobilities of the device of 1,100 cm2/Vs and 550 cm2/Vs at drain bias of -0.75V, respectively. The piezo-resistance gauge …
Two-dimensional graphene exhibits many fascinating properties such as ballistic electronic conduction and quantum Hall effect at room temperature.1-4 Graphene doped electrochemically or through charge-transfer with electron-donor and -acceptor molecules,5-7 shows marked changes in electronic structure, with characteristic signatures in the Raman spectra.5-10 Substitutional doping, universally used in tuning properties of semiconductors, could be a powerful tool to control the electronic properties of graphene. Here, we present the structure and properties of boron and nitrogen doped graphenes,…
Nanosize pores can turn semimetallic graphene into a semiconductor and from being impermeable into the most efficient molecular sieve membrane. However, scaling the pores down to the nanometer, while fulfilling the tight structural constraints imposed by applications, represents an enormous challenge for present top-down strategies. Here we report a bottom-up method to synthesize nanoporous graphene comprising an ordered array of pores separated by ribbons, which can be tuned down to the one nanometer range. The size, density, morphology and chemical composition of the pores are defined with a…
We demonstrate that freeing a single-atom thick layer of hexagonal boron nitride (hbn) from tight chemical bonding to a Ni(111) thin film grown on a W(110) substrate can be achieved by intercalation of Au atoms into the interface. This process has been systematically investigated using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, X-ray photoemission and absorption techniques. It has been demonstrated that the transition of the hbn layer from the "rigid" into the "quasi-freestanding" state is accompanied by a change of its lattice constant. Using chemical vapor deposition, graphene has been succe…
Development of the next generation thermal interface materials with high thermal conductivity is important for thermal management and packaging of electronic devices. We report on the synthesis and thermal conductivity measurements of non-curing thermal paste, i.e. grease, based on mineral oil with the mixture of graphene and few-layer graphene flakes as the fillers. It was found that graphene thermal paste exhibits a distinctive thermal percolation threshold with the thermal conductivity revealing a sublinear dependence on the filler loading. This behavior contrasts with the thermal conductiv…
Graphene nanoflakes (GNFs) were synthesized by atmospheric pressure chemical vapour deposition of propane (C3H8) employing Ni (salen) powder without the introduction of a substrate. The graphitic nature of the GNFs was examined by an X-ray diffraction method. Scanning electron microscopy results revealed that GNFs were stacked on top of one another and had a high aspect ratio. Transmission electron microscopy studies suggested that the GNFs were made up of a number of crystalline graphene layers, some of which were even single crystalline as evident from the selected area diffraction pattern. …
Here we demonstrate the selective bulk scale synthesis of delaminated graphene sheets by a proper choice of magnetic field modulating an electric-arc. An ultra-high purity glassy graphite anode was sublimated in an argon atmosphere. Carbon nanotubes, as well as graphene sheets were found inside the deposit formed on the cathode. Both the high purity carbon nanotubes as well as graphene sheets, with minimal structural defects, were synthesized separately by varying the strength and orientation of the external magnetic field generated by arrays of permanent magnets. The as-synthesized carbonaceo…
By exhibiting a measurable bandgap and exotic valley physics, atomically-thick tungsten disulfide (WS2) offers exciting prospects for optoelectronic applications. The synthesis of continuous WS2 films on other two-dimensional (2D) materials would greatly facilitate the implementation of novel all-2D photoactive devices. In this work we demonstrate the scalable growth of WS2 on graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) via a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) approach. Spectroscopic and microscopic analysis reveal that the film is bilayer-thick, with local monolayer inclusions. Photoluminescence…
We analyze electronic and phononic quantum transport through zigzag or chiral graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) perforated with an array of nanopores. Since local charge current profiles in these GNRs are peaked around their edges, drilling nanopores in their interior does not affect such edge charge currents while drastically reducing heat current carried by phonons in sufficiently long wires. The combination of these two effects can yield highly efficient thermoelectric devices with maximum $ZT \simeq 11$ at liquid nitrogen temperature and $ZT \simeq 4$ at room temperature achieved in $\sim 1$ $μ$…
The adoption of graphene in electronics, optoelectronics and photonics is hindered by the difficulty in obtaining high quality material on technologically-relevant substrates, over wafer-scale sizes and with metal contamination levels compatible with industrial requirements. To date, the direct growth of graphene on insulating substrates has proved to be challenging, usually requiring metal-catalysts or yielding defective graphene. In this work, we demonstrate a metal-free approach implemented in commercially available reactors to obtain high-quality monolayer graphene on c-plane sapphire subs…
Monolayer graphene has been grown on crystallized Cu (111) films on standard oxidized Si 100 mm wafers. The monolayer graphene demonstrates high uniformity (>97% coverage), with immeasurable defects (>95% defect-negligible) across the entire wafer. Key to these results is the phase transition of evaporated copper films from amorphous to crystalline at the growth temperature as corroborated by X-ray diffraction and electron backscatter diffraction. Noticeably, phase transition of copper film is observed on technologically ubiquitous oxidized Si wafer where the oxide is a standard amorphous ther…
A significant advance toward achieving practical applications of graphene as a two-dimensional material in nanoelectronics would be provided by successful synthesis of both n-type and p-type doped graphene. However reliable doping and a thorough understanding of carrier transport in the presence of charged impurities governed by ionized donors or acceptors in the graphene lattice are still lacking. Here we report experimental realization of few-layer nitrogen-doped (N-doped) graphene sheets by chemical vapor deposition of organic molecule 1, 3, 5-triazine on Cu metal catalyst. By reducing the …
