The substrate temperature required for synthesis of graphene in an arc discharge plasma was studied. It was shown that an increase of copper substrate temperature up to the melting point leads to an increase in the amount of graphene production and the quality of graphene sheets. Favorable range of substrate temperatures for arc-based graphene synthesis was determined, and it is in a relatively narrow range of about 1210-1340 K.
Photoelectron emission measurements have been performed using a filament-driven multi-cusp arc discharge volume production H^- ion source (LIISA). It has been found that photoelectron currents obtained with Al, Cu, Mo, Ta and stainless steel (SAE 304) are on the same order of magnitude. The photoelectron currents depend linearly on the discharge power. It is shown experimentally that photoelectron emission is significant only in the short wavelength range of hydrogen spectrum due to the energy dependence of the quantum efficiency. It is estimated from the measured data that the maximum photoel…
Here, the synthesis of Molybdenum Disulphide (MoS2) flakes by means of anodic atmospheric arc discharge is reported for the first time. The vertical electrode configuration consisted of a compound anode (hollow graphite anode filled with MoS2 powder) and a solid graphite cathode placed just above of the compound anode. Arc processes were operated in pulsed mode to preferentially evaporate the powder component from the anode and to minimize Carbon ablation. Pulsed anodic arc discharges were conducted at 2 Hz and 10% duty cycle in 300 Torr of Helium with a peak current of 250-300 A and peak volt…
Spectroscopic characterization of a specific case of the atmospheric pressure air jet plasma in the transverse cw dc arc discharge of high voltage was done. Within the spectrum of wavelengths from 200 to 1100 nm all remarkable emissions were monitored, and all excited atomic lines of N, O, H and molecular bands of NO, N2, O2, OH, CO, CN were identified. Using relative intensities of analytical CuI lines 510.5, 515.3, 521.8 nm (the product of electrode emission) and N2 2+ -system band at 337.1 nm (the dominating component of plasma-forming gas), the temperature of electronic excitation of free …
The paper considers an effect of intensive ultrasound on the suspension of soot microparticles and nanoparticles in the inert gas, resulting in the coagulation of relatively large soot particles and leading to the improvement of the efficiency of production of nanoparticles, as has been observed in experiments. The effect of the particles charge on the possibility of coagulation is analyzed.
Pattern formation and self-organization are phenomena commonly observed experimentally in diverse types of plasma systems, including atmospheric-pressure electric arc discharges. However, numerical simulations reproducing anode pattern formation in arc discharges have proven exceedingly elusive. Time-dependent three-dimensional thermodynamic nonequilibrium simulations reveal the spontaneous formation of self-organized patterns of anode attachment spots in the free-burning arc, a canonical thermal plasma flow established by a constant DC current between an axi-symmetric electrodes configuration…
Comprehensive non-invasive spectroscopic techniques and electrical measurements of the carbon arc revealed two distinguishable plasma synthesis regions in the radial direction normal to the arc axis. These regions, which are defined as the arc core and the arc periphery, are shown to have very different compositions of carbon species with different densities and temperatures. The colder arc periphery is dominated by carbon diatomic molecules (C2), which are in the minority in the composition of the hot arc core. These differences are due to a highly non-uniform distribution of the arc current,…
Very high frequency (VHF) driven capacitive discharges are now being increasingly adopted for plasma-based materials processing due to their high processing rates and lower substrate damage. Past studies related to complex plasma dynamics and higher harmonics generation in such systems were limited to constant voltage/current conditions, whereas, industrial systems are mostly driven by constant power density sources. In the present study, using particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation, we explore the dynamics of collisionless symmetric capacitive discharges that is operated at constant power densitie…
The investigations of powerful discharge in high density hydrogen were carried out on an installation with preliminary adiabatic compression. The experiments were performed under the following conditions: stored energy of the capacitive storage - 140-450 kJ, charging voltage - 8.0-14.0 kV, discharge current amplitude- 200-600 kA, current rise rate - 10^9-10^10 A/s. The maximum particle density nmax, achieved just before the discharge, was about 2.0x10^22 cm-3. It was observed one or several compression of the discharge channel. The moments of contractions corresponds a increase of voltage on d…
This study is designed to explore the two dimensional temperature maps of the atmospheric argon discharge consisting of pin-to-plane electrodes supplied by a high voltage DC source. After checking the stability of the micro discharge, the two dimensional image plane focused by a quartz lens was scanned by the fiber probe driven by a 3D Mobile Platform. The rotational and vibrational temperatures are calculated using nitrogen emissions collected by the high resolution spectrometer and high sensitive intensified charge coupled device (ICCD). The rotational temperature varies from 1558.15 K to 26…
Spherical quartz stones of around 1 cm in diameter have been exposed to anodic arc discharges in a helium atmosphere at 300 Torr. The arc current flowing between the graphite electrodes was set either in continuous DC mode (30-150 A) or in pulsed mode at 2 Hz (220 A peak). The ablation rate in each sample was systematically measured after several seconds of arc plasma treatment. Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) diagnostics and 2-D fluid simulations of the arc discharge have shed light on the heat flux transport and the heating mechanisms of the quartz crystals. A linear correlation is found…
An easy procedure to build up membrane-electrode assemblies for applications dedicated to miniaturized PEMFC using H2 or CH3OH by a two-steps atmospheric plasma process is reported. Firstly, catalyst nanoparticles are grafted on carbon substrates by spraying a Pt colloidal solution in the post-discharge of an RF atmospheric plasma torch. In the second step, the resulting decorated electrodes are covered by plasma synthesized polymeric membranes in the discharge of a DBD. The sulfonated polystyrene membranes are synthesized by injecting simultaneously styrene and trifluoromethanesulfonic acid m…
A two-fluid model developed originally to describe wave oscillations in the vacuum arc centrifuge, a cylindrical, rapidly rotating, low temperature and confined plasma column, is applied to interpret plasma oscillations in a RF generated linear magnetised plasma (WOMBAT), with similar density and field strength. Compared to typical centrifuge plasmas, WOMBAT plasmas have slower normalised rotation frequency, lower temperature and lower axial velocity. Despite these differences, the two-fluid model provides a consistent description of the WOMBAT plasma configuration and yields qualitative agree…
This work is concerned with the numerical simulation of elastoplastic, electromagnetic and thermal response of aerospace materials due to their interaction with a plasma arc under lightning strike conditions. Current approaches treat the interaction between these two states of matter either in a decoupled manner or through one-way coupled 'co-simulation'. In this paper a methodology for multiphysics simulations of two-way interaction between lightning and elastoplastic materials is presented, which can inherently capture the non-linear feedback between these two states of matter. This is achie…

Delineating the dominant processes responsible for nanomaterial synthesis in a plasma environment requires measurements of the precursor species contributing to the growth of nanostructures. We performed comprehensive measurements of spatial and temporal profiles of carbon dimers (C$_2$) in atmospheric-pressure carbon arc by laser-induced fluorescence. Measured spatial profiles of C$_2$ coincide with the growth region of carbon nanotubes and vary depending on the arc operation mode, which is determined by the discharge current and the ablation rate of the graphite anode. The C$_2$ density prof…
In the atmospheric pressure anodic carbon arc, ablation of the anode serves as a feedstock of carbon for production of nanomaterials. It is known that the ablation of the graphite anode in this arc can have two distinctive modes with low and high ablation rates. The transition between these modes is governed by the power deposition at the arc attachment to the anode and depends on the gap between the anode and the cathode electrodes. Probe measurements combined with optical emission spectroscopy (OES) are used to analyze the voltage drop between the arc electrodes. These measurements corrobora…
This work is concerned with the numerical simulation of plasma arc interaction with aerospace substrates under conditions akin to lightning strike and in particular with the accurate calculation of radiative heat losses. These are important because they have a direct effect on the calculation of thermal and pressure loads on the substrates, which can lead to material damage under certain conditions. Direct numerical solution of the radiation transport equation (RTE) in mesoscale simulations is not viable due to its computational cost, so for practical applications reduced models are usually em…
