We use ab initio calculations to examine thermodynamic factors that could promote the formation of recently proposed unique oP10-FeB4 and oP12-FeB2 compounds. We demonstrate that these compact boron-rich phases are stabilized further under pressure. We also show that chromium tetraboride is more stable in the new oP10 rather than the reported oI10 structure which opens up the possibility of realizing an oP10-Fe(x)Cr(1-x)B4 pseudobinary material. In addition to exhibiting remarkable electronic features, oP10-FeB4 and oP12-FeB2 are expected to be harder than the known Fe-B compounds commonly used for hard coating applications.
The electrical conductivity of melts of boron and its carbide (B4C), nitride (BN), and phosphide (BP) has been studied at pressures to 7.7 GPa and temperatures to 3500 K. It has been shown that these melts are good conductors with specific electrical conductivity values comparable with that of iron melt at ambient pressure.
We adopt a global optimization method to predict two-dimensional (2D) nanostructures through the particle-swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. By performing PSO simulations, we predict new stable structures of 2D boron-carbon (B-C) compounds for a wide range of boron concentrations. Our calculations show that: (1) All 2D B-C compounds are metallic except for BC3 which is a magic case where the isolation of carbon six-membered ring by boron atoms results in a semiconducting behavior. (2) For C-rich B-C compounds, the most stable 2D structures can be viewed as boron doped graphene structures, whe…
We report a high-throughput ab-initio study of the thermodynamic and superconducting proper- ties of the recently synthesized XB$_3$C$_3$ clathrates. These compounds, in which boron and carbon form a sponge-like network of interconnected cages each enclosing a central X atom, are attractive candidates to achieve high-Tc conventional superconductivity at ambient pressure, due to the simultaneous presence of a stiff B-C covalent network and a tunable charge reservoir, provided by the guest atom. Ternary compounds like CaB$_3$C$_3$, SrB$_3$C$_3$ and BaB$_3$C$_3$ are predicted to exhibit T$_c$ $\l…
Based on crystal chemistry rationale and calculations within the density functional theory DFT, the U:B system is complemented with additional binary compounds UB3, U2B6, and UB6 possessing two-dimensional 2D and 3D boron substructures. Observations are supported quantitatively with the trends of cohesive energies, charge transfers onto the boron sub-lattice and geometry optimized structures. The results point out to a structure crossover from hexagonal (layer B network) to 3D boron network at compositions above UB3 found to be connected with a threshold amount of charge onto boron which is ~0…
Through first-principles calculations, the phonon-limited transport properties of cubic boron-V compounds (BP, BAs and BSb) are studied. We find that the high optical phonon frequency in these compounds leads to the substantial suppression of polar scattering and the reduction of inter-valley transition mediated by large-wavevector optical phonons, both of which significantly facilitate charge transport. We also discover that BAs simultaneously has a high hole mobility (2110 cm2/V-s) and electron mobility (1400 cm2/V-s) at room temperature, which is rare in semiconductors. Our findings present…
We propose a new route to achieve the superconducting state in Boron-rich solids, the hole doping of B$_{12}$ icosahedra. For this purpose we consider a prototype metallic phase of B$_{13}$C$_2$. We show that in this compound the Boron icosahedral units are mainly responsible for the large phonon frequencies logarithmic average, 65.8 meV, and the moderate electron-phonon coupling 0.8. We suggest that this high critical temperature could be a general feature of hole doped boron icosahedral solids.
Modern high-performance permanent magnets are made from alloys of rare earth and transition metal elements, and large magnetization is achieved in the alloys with high concentration of transition metals. We applied evolutionary search scheme based on first-principles calculations to the Y-Co-B system and predicted 37 cobalt-rich compounds with high probability of being stable. Focusing on remarkably cobalt-rich compounds, YCo$_{16}$ and YCo$_{20}$, we found that, although they are metastable phases, the phase stability is increased with increase of temperature due to the contribution of vibrat…
In the present study, the structural and hitherto uninvestigated mechanical (elastic stiffness constants, machinability index, Cauchy pressure, anisotropy indices, brittleness/ductility, Poissons ratio), electronic, optical, and thermodynamic properties of novel boron-rich compounds B6X (X = S, Se) have been explored using density functional theory. The estimated structural lattice parameters were consistent with the prior report. The mechanical and dynamical stability of these compounds have been established theoretically. The materials are brittle in nature and elastically anisotropic. The v…
Structure and electronic properties of two unusual boron clusters obtained by fusion of borozene rings has been studied by means of first principles calculations, based on the generalized-gradient approximation of the density functional theory, and the semiempirical tight-binding method was used for the transport calculations. The role of disorder has also been considered with single vacancies and substitutional atoms. Results show that the pure boron clusters are topologically planar and characterized by (3c-2e) bonds, which can explain, together with the aromaticity (estimated by means of NI…
In this paper we report a new synthesis route to produce boron powders characterized as being amorphous and having very fine particle size. This route has been developed to improve the performances of superconducting MgB2 powders, which can be directly synthesized from this nano-structured boron precursor by following the ex-situ or the in-situ P.I.T. method during the manufacturing of tapes, wires and cables. All the procedure steps are explained and the chemical-physical characterization of the boron powder, using x-ray diffraction (Xrd), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission e…
Two-dimensional systems have strengthened their position as one of the key materials for novel applications. Very recently, boron joined the distinguished group of elements that are confirmed to possess 2D allotropes, named borophenes. In this work, we explore the stability and hardness of the highest boride of tungsten, which is regarded as built of borophenes separated by metal atoms. We show that WB$_{3+x}$ has Vickers hardnesses approaching 40 GPa only for small values of $x$. The insertion of extra boron atoms is, in general, detrimental for WB$_{3}$ in terms of hardness since leads to th…
Processing methods are described for the development of magnesium diboride wire using the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) to produce long lengths of suitably doped starting boron fiber. It is found that titanium can be co-deposited with the boron to make long lengths of doped fiber that contain both TiB and TiB2. When this fiber is reacted in Mg vapor to transform boron into MgB2, the resulting conductor has a superconducting critical current density of about 5 times 10^6 A/cm^2 at 5K and self field. The critical current density at 25K and 1 Tesla is 10,000 A/cm^2. Using optical methods to def…
Boron rich chalcogenides have been predicted to have excellent properties for optical and mechanical applications in recent times. In this regard, we report the electronic, optical and mechanical properties of recently synthesized boron rich chalcogenide compounds, B12X (X = S and Se) using density functional theory for the first time. The effects of exchange and correlation functional on these properties are also investigated. The consistency of the obtained crystal structure with the reported experimental results has been checked in terms of lattice parameters. The considered materials are m…
Density functional theory calculations have been used to identify stable layered Li-$M$-B crystal structure phases derived from a recently proposed binary metal-sandwich (MS) lithium monoboride superconductor. We show that the MS lithium monoboride gains in stability when alloyed with electron-rich metal diborides; the resulting ordered Li$_{2(1-x)}M_x$B$_2$ ternary phases may form under normal synthesis conditions in a wide concentration range of $x$ for a number of group-III-V metals $M$. In an effort to pre-select compounds with the strongest electron-phonon coupling we examine the softenin…
Two boron-rich chalcogenides B12S and B12Se isostructural to α-rhombohedral boron were synthesized by chemical reaction of the elements at high-pressure - high-temperature conditions. The crystal structures and stoichiometries of both compounds were confirmed by Rietveld refinement and elemental analysis. The experimental Raman spectra of B12S and B12Se were investigated for the first time. All observed Raman bands have been attributed to the theoretically calculated phonon modes, and the mode assignment has been performed.
New candidate ground states at 1:4, 1:2, and 1:1 compositions are identified in the well-known Fe-B system via a combination of ab initio high-throughput and evolutionary searches. We show that the proposed oP12-FeB2 stabilizes by a break up of 2D boron layers into 1D chains while oP10-FeB4 stabilizes by a distortion of a 3D boron network. The uniqueness of these configurations gives rise to a set of remarkable properties: oP12-FeB2 is expected to be the first semiconducting metal diboride and oP10-FeB4 is shown to have the potential for phonon-mediated superconductivity with a Tc of 15-20 K.
Existence of ferromagnetism in bulk calcium compounds is discovered theoretically. First-principles calculations of calcium phosphide, calcium arsenide and calcium antimonide in the zinc-blende structure have been performed to show the half-metallic ground state in each optimized stable structure. Magnetism comes from spin-polarization of electrons in $p$-orbitals of P, As or Sb and $d$-orbitals of calcium atoms. The half-metallicity is analogous to the half-metallic zinc-blende compounds, {\it e.g.} CrAs or CrSb, but the predicted compounds become ferromagnetic without transition metals. In (…
Boron suboxide B6O, the hardest known oxide, has an R-3m crystal structure (α-B6O) that can be described as an oxygen-intercalated structure of α-boron, or, equivalently, as a cubic close packing of B12 icosahedra with two oxygen atoms occupying all octahedral voids in it. Here we show a new ground state of this compound at ambient conditions, Cmcm-B6O (\b{eta}-B6O), which in all quantum-mechanical treatments that we tested (GGA, LDA, and hybrid functional HSE06) comes out to be slightly but consistently more stable. Increasing pressure and temperature further stabilize it with respect to the …
New boron-rich sulfide B6S and selenide B6Se have been discovered from high pressure - high temperature synthesis combined with ab initio evolutionary crystal structure prediction, and studied by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy at ambient conditions. As it follows from Rietveld refinement of powder X-ray diffraction data, both chalcogenides have orthorhombic symmetry and belongs to Pmna space group. All experimentally observed Raman bands have been attributed to the theoretically calculated phonon modes, and the mode assignment has been performed. Prediction of mechanical …
Rhombohedral B$_{12}$ unit is viewed as a host matrix embedding linear tri-atomic arrangements of elements (E) resulting in a relatively large family of boron-rich compounds with B$_{12}${E-E-E} generic formulation. The present work focuses on boron subnitride, B$_{13}$N$_2$ that we express in present context as B$_{12}${N-B-N}. Within well established quantum density functional theory (DFT) a full study of its electronic properties is provided. Also linear triatomic arrangements in view of the existence in simple compounds such as sodium azide NaN$_3$, i.e., Na$^I${N-N-N} and calcium cyanamid…
Possible crystalline modifications of chemical compounds at low temperatures correspond to local minima of the energy landscape. Determining these minima via simulated annealing is one method for the prediction of crystal structures, where the number of atoms per unit cell is the only information used. It is demonstrated that this method can be applied to covalent systems, at the example of boron nitride, using ab initio energies in all stages of the optimization, i.e. both during the global search and the subsequent local optimization. Ten low lying structure candidates are presented, includi…
Superconductivity in two-dimensional compounds is widely concerned, not only due to its application in constructing nano-superconducting devices, but also for the general scientific interests. Very recently, borophene (two-dimensional boron sheet) has been successfully grown on the Ag(111) surface, through direct evaporation of a pure boron source. The experiment unveiled two types of borophene structures, namely $β_{12}$ and $χ_3$. Herein, we employed density-functional first-principles calculations to investigate the electron-phonon coupling and superconductivity in both structures of boroph…

Half-metallic ferrimagnetism is crucial for spintronic applications with respect to ferromagnets due to the lower stray fields created by these materials. Studying the effect of defects in CrAs and related transition-metal chalcogenides and pnictides crystallizing in the zinc-blende structure, we reveal that the excess of the transition-metal atoms leads to half-metallic ferrimagnetism. The surplus of these atoms are antiferromagnetically coupled to the transition-metal atoms sitting at the perfect lattice sites. The needed condition to achieve half-metallic ferrimagnetism is to prevent the mi…
A number of successful theoretical models of hardness have been developed recently. A thermodynamic model of hardness, which supposes the intrinsic character of correlation between hardness and thermodynamic properties of solids, allows one to predict hardness of known or even hypothetical solids from the data on Gibbs energy of atomization of the elements, which implicitly determine the energy density per chemical bonding. The only structural data needed is the coordination number of the atoms in a lattice. Using this approach, the hardness of known and hypothetical polymorphs of pure boron a…

We have first succeefully synthesized the sodium cobalt oxyhydrate superconductors using KMnO4 as a de-intercalating and oxidizing agent. It is a novel route to form the superconductive phase of NaxCoO2.yH2O without resorting to the commonly used Br2/CH3CN solution. The role of the KMnO4 is to de-intercalate the Na+ from the parent compound Na0.7CoO2 and oxidize the Co ion as a result. The higher molar ratio of KMnO4 relative to the sodium content tends to remove more Na+ from the parent compound and results in a slight expansion of the c-axis in the unit cell. The superconducting transition t…
Half-metallic antiferromagnets are the ideal materials for spintronic applications since their zero magnetization leads to lower stray fields and thus tiny energy losses. Starting from the Mn$_2$VAl and Mn$_2$VSi alloys we substitute Co or Fe for Mn and we show by means of first-principle electronic structure calculations that the resulting compounds are ferrimagnets. When the total number of valence electrons reaches the magic number of 24 the Fe-doped compounds are semi-metals and thus non-magnetic while the Co-doped ones show the desirable half-metallic antiferromagnetic character. The comp…
The parent compound of high-Tc superconducting cuprates is a unique Mott state consisting of layers of spin-1/2 ions arranged on a square lattice and with a record high antiferromagnetic coupling within the layers. Compounds with similar characteristics have long been searched for. Nickelates and iridates had been proposed as cuprate analogs but so far have not reached a satisfactory similarity. Here we use a combination of experimental and theoretical tools to show that the commercial compound AgF2 is an excellent cuprate analog with remarkably similar electronic parameters to La2CuO4 but lar…
The $V_N N_B$ defect in hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), comprising a nitrogen vacancy adjacent to a nitrogen-for-boron substitution, is modelled in regard to its possible usefulness in a nanophotonics device. The modelling is done on both a simple model compound and on a 2D periodic representation of the defect, considering its magnetic and spectroscopic properties. The electronic distribution in $V_N N_B$ excited states is very open-shell in nature, and to deal with this two new computational methods are developed: one allows standard density-functional theory (DFT) calculations to be employe…
In recent years, observations of highly-ordered, hexagonal arrays of self-organized nanostructures on binary or impurity-laced targets under normal-incidence ion irradiation have excited interest in this phenomenon as a potential route to high-throughput, low-cost manufacture of nanoscale devices or nanostructured coatings. The currently-prominent explanation for these structures is a morphological instability driven by ion erosion discovered by Bradley and Shipman; however, recent parameter estimates via molecular dynamics simulations suggest that this erosive instability may not be active fo…
Discovering new materials with ultrahigh thermal conductivity has been a critical research frontier and driven by many important technological applications ranging from thermal management to energy science. Here we have rigorously investigated the fundamental lattice vibrational spectra in ternary compounds and determined the thermal conductivity using a predictive ab initio approach. Phonon transport in B-X-C (X = N, P, As) groups is systematically quantified with different crystal structures and high-order anharmonicity involving a four-phonon process. Our calculation found an ultrahigh room…
In the design of materials with low lattice thermal conductivity, compounds with high density, low speed of sound, and complexity at either the atomic, nano- or microstructural level are preferred. The layered compound Mg$_3$Sb$_2$ defies these prevailing paradigms, exhibiting lattice thermal conductivity comparable to PbTe and Bi$_2$Te$_3$, despite its low density and simple structure. The excellent thermoelectric performance ($zT$ $\sim$ 1.5) in $n$-type Mg$_3$Sb$_2$ has thus far been attributed to its multi-valley conduction band, while its anomalous thermal properties have been largely ove…

Recently, a host/guest clathrate SrB3C3 with sp3-bonded boron-carbon framework was synthesized at around 50 GPa. On the basis of electron count, the structure is understood as guest Sr2+ cations intercalated in the (B3C3)3- framework. Previous calculations suggest that SrB3C3 is a hole conductor with an estimated superconducting critical temperature (Tc) of 42 K at ambient pressure. If atoms with similar radius, such as Rb, can substitute Sr2+ in the lattice, the electronic as well as superconductivity properties of this material will be modified significantly. Here, we perform extensive simul…
Perovskite manganite La0.5Ca0.5-x xMnO3 (LCMO) nanomaterials were elaborated using the sucrose modified auto combustion method. Rietveld refinements of the X-ray diffraction patterns of the crystalline structure confirm a single-phase orthorhombic state with Pbnm space group (No. 62). The Ca-vacancies were voluntarily created in the LCMO structure in order to study their influence on the magnetic behaviour in the system. The magnetic susceptibility was found to be highly enhanced in the sample with Ca-vacancies. Paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transition was evidenced in both samples aroun…
In this work we present a new chemical route to synthesize Tm2Mn2O7 pyrochlore, a compound which is thermodynamically unstable at ambient pressure. Differently from the reported in the past high pressure synthesis of the same compound applying oxides as starting materials, we have obtained a pure phase Tm2Mn2O7 by a converting TmMnO3 at 1100 C and 1300 bar oxygen pressure. The studies of Tm2Mn2O7 performed by a high resolution neutron powder diffraction have shown, that a pure pyrochlore cubic phase Tm2Mn2O7 (space group Fd-3m) have been obtained. On cooling below 25K there is a transition to …
Although Boron nitride (BN) is a well-known compound widely used for engineering and scientific purposes, the phase stability of its polymorphs, one of its most fundamental properties, is still under debate. The ab initio determination of the ground state of the BN polymorphs, such as hexagonal and zinc-blende, is difficult because of the elusive Van der Waals interaction, which plays a decisive role in some of the polymorphs, making quantitative prediction highly challenging. Hence, despite multiple theoretical studies, there has been no consensus on the ground state yet, primarily due to con…
We study the structural and magnetic properties of the MnBi inter-metallic compound. The LTP (Low Temperature Phase) MnBi compound is successfully synthesized in single step by vacuum encapsulation technique and rapid quenching from phase formation temperature. The phase purity and the magnetic moments of MnBi are highly dependent on heat treating schedule. The best phase purity and the magnetic moment are found for a sample heat treated at 310oC for 48h. Rietveld fitted X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns revealed that the studied MnBi compound is crystallized in hexagonal P63/mmc space group wi…
During the ion bombardment of targets containing multiple component species, highly-ordered arrays of nanostructures are sometimes observed. Models incorporating coupled partial differential equations, describing both morphological and chemical evolution, seem to offer the most promise of explaining these observations. However, these models contain many unknown parameters, which must satisfy specific conditions in order to explain observed behavior. The lack of knowledge of these parameters is therefore an important barrier to the comparison of theory with experiment. Here, by adapting the rec…
The pressure-induced transformation of diatomic nitrogen into non-molecular polymeric phases may produce potentially useful high-energy-density materials. We combine first-principles calculations with structure searching to predict a new class of nitrogen-rich boron nitrides with a stoichiometry of B3N5 that are stable or metastable relative to solid N2 and h-BN at ambient pressure. The most stable phase at ambient pressure has a layered structure (h-B3N5) containing hexagonal B3N3 layers sandwiched with intercalated freely rotating N2 molecules. At 15 GPa, a three-dimensional C2221 structure …
In the wide world of 2D materials, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) holds a special place due to its excellent characteristics. In addition to its thermal, chemical and mechanical stability, hBN demonstrates high thermal conductivity, low compressibility, and wide band gap around 6 eV, making it promising candidate for many groundbreaking applications and more specifically for optoelectronic devices. Millimeters scale hexagonal boron nitride crystals are obtained through a disruptive dual method (PDC/PCS) consisting in a complementary coupling of the Polymer Derived Ceramics route and a Pressure-…
We present a comparative study between ReN3 and AgN3 by using density functional theory. The ReN3 is a hypothetical compound proposed by us to interpret the Re to Re interplanar spacing of thin films grown by sputtering. Both, the AgN3 as the ReN3, are calculated as positive enthalpy compounds. The enthalpy might give a clue about the spontaneous decomposition of the solid form, but it cannot be interpreted as a restriction of its synthesizability. As from the calculated total-energy, we discuss the route for the formation of AgN3 starting from atomic species in aqueous solution. We propose th…
We performed ab initio lattice-dynamics calculations of frame-cluster dodecaborides ZrB12 and LuB12. As a whole, our calculated phonon frequencies and atom-projected density of states are consistent with the results of available first-principles calculations and experimental measurements. So we conclude that the ab initio DFT approach is quite appropriate to study the sufficiently subtle physics of these compounds. Our experiment-independent calculations provide an explicit quantitative confirmation of mixing the eigenvectors of boron and metal vibrations, which was previously observed in expe…
