Characterization and analysis of spin-orbit coupled (SOC) states, as a measurement problem, play a vital role in research on the modern optics and photonics based on structured light. Here, we demonstrate determination of photonic SOC states via spatial-Stokes measurement, in which two spatial complex probability amplitudes of spin-dependent spatial modes within SOC states and their relative (intramode) phase can be measured directly. Compared with the standard quantum-state tomography, by avoiding wavefront-flattening operations, the apparatus can completely record photons' realistic SOC structure, leading to a more accurate and precise determination of wavefunction. This simple and general approach for SOC state determination can provide a powerful toolkit for in-situ measuring photonic SOC state, characterizing the quality of SOC light source and associated geometric-phase devices.
The Photon wave function Formalism provides an alternative description of some quantum optical phenomena in a more intuitive way. We use this formalism to describe the process of correlated Stokes--anti-Stokes Raman scattering. In this process, two photons from a laser beam are inelastically scattered by a phonon created by the first photon (Stokes processes) and annihilated by the second photon (anti-Stokes process), producing a Stokes--anti-Sokes (SaS) photon pair. We arrive at an expression for the two-photon wave function of the scattered SaS photon pair, which is in agreement with a numbe…
We present a formalism for experimental determination of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of a paraxial optical beam-field by intertwining Barnett's formalism and Stokes parameter measurements. Using Barnett's formalism we calculate the OAM flux density of a suitably general 2-dimensional beam-field; and re-express it in terms of experimentally measurable quantities. Considering a demonstrative optical system, we obtain the OAM flux density profiles, total OAM flux and OAM per photon -- leading towards the experimental characterization of OAM using Barnett's formalism. Our method will find p…
Phase conjugation with stimulated Brillouin scattering can be used to correct wavefront aberrations in high-power laser systems. Here, we consider such process with cylindrical vector lasers beams. By using a vectorial approach and a modal decomposition, we obtain a differential matrix equation that enables the calculation of the structure of Stokes vector eigenmodes and their Brillouin gain. The emphasis is put on the mode with the largest gain, which contributes the most to the Stokes beam. We show that the phase conjugation of orbital angular momentum in cylindrical vector beams is prevente…

Anti-Stokes photoluminescence of metal nanoparticles, in which emitted photons have a higher energy than the incident photons, is an indicator of the temperature prevalent within a nanoparticle. Previous work has shown how to extract the temperature from a gold nanoparticle under continuous-wave monochromatic illumination. We extend the technique to pulsed illumination and introduce pump-probe anti-Stokes spectroscopy. This new technique enables us not only to measure an effective electron temperature in a gold nanoparticle ($\sim 10^3$ K under our conditions), but also to measure ultrafast dy…

Light with high mutual correlations at different frequencies can be used to create heralded single-photon sources, which may serve as the basic elements of existing quantum cryptography and quantum teleportation schemes. One of the important examples in natural systems of light with high mutual correlations is the light produced by spontaneous Raman scattering on an ensemble of molecules. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of using Raman light to create a heralded single-photon source. We show that when using Stokes scattered light for postselection of an anti-Stokes scattered light…
we investigate the transmission of probe laser beam in a coupled-cavity system with polaritons by using standard input-output relation of optical fields, and proposed a theoretical schema for realizing a polariton-based photonic transistor. On account of effects of exciton-photon coupling and single-photon optomechanical coupling, a probe laser field can be either amplified or attenuated by another pump laser field when it passes through a coupled-cavity system with polaritons. The Stokes and anti-Stokes scattered effect of output prober laser can also be modulated. Our results open up excitin…
A photonic molecule (PM) is a miniature diffractive optical structure composed of resonance microcavities called atoms (e.g., cylinders or spheres) supporting a set of high-quality eigenmodes. All atoms in a PM are coupled by the electromagnetic fields of eigenmodes, which form collective supermodes of the whole PM. We consider a particular type of mirror-symmetric PMs being optically excited simultaneously via two light channels (tapered fibers). Based on the numerical simulations, we show that the spectral composition of supermodes in such PM can be effectively manipulated by changing the ph…
Wavelength-dependent polarization state of light carries crucial information about light-matter interactions. However, its measurement is limited to bulky, energy-consuming devices, which prohibits many modern, portable applications. Here, we propose and demonstrate a chip-scale spectropolarimeter implemented using a CMOS-compatible silicon photonics technology. Four compact Vernier microresonator spectrometers are monolithically integrated with a broadband polarimeter consisting of a 2D nanophotonic antenna and a polarimetric circuit to achieve full-Stokes spectropolarimetric analysis. The pr…
In recent years, the manipulation of Fano resonances in the time domain has unlocked deep insights into a broad spectrum of systems' coherent dynamics. Here, inelastic scattering of light with coherent acoustic phonons is harnessed to achieve complex Fano resonances. The sudden change of phonon momentum during reflection leads to a transition from anti-Stokes to Stokes light scattering, producing two different resonances that interfere in the measurement process. We highlight the conditions necessary to achieve such interference, revealing an underlying symmetry between photons and phonons, an…
The production of correlated Stokes (S) and anti-Stokes (aS) photons (SaS process) mediated by real or virtual phonon exchange has been reported in many transparent materials. In this work, we investigate the polarization and time correlations of SaS photon pairs produced in a diamond sample. We demonstrate that both S and aS photons have mainly the same polarization of the excitation laser. We also perform a pump-and-probe experiment to measure the decay rate of the SaS pair production, evidencing the fundamental diference between the real and virtual (phonon exchange) processes. In real proc…
In this work, an explicit formula is deduced for identifying the orbital angular moment (OAM) of vectorial vortex with space-variant state of polarization (SOP). Different to scalar vortex, the OAM of vectorial vortex can be attributed to two parts: the azimuthal gradient of Pancharatnam phase and the product of the azimuthal gradient of orientation angle of SOP and relevant solid angle on the Poincaré sphere. With our formula, a geometrical description for OAM of light beams can be achieved under the framework of the traditional Poincaré sphere. Numerical simulations for two types of vectoria…

Even and odd vector modes in optical fibers are represented with linear combinations of orbital angular momentum modes, and considered as single-photon spin-orbit entangled states. It renders generating such states with fiber structures possible.
We report the direct characterization of energy-time entanglement of narrowband biphotons produced from spontaneous four-wave mixing in cold atoms. The Stokes and anti-Stokes two-photon temporal correlation is measured by single-photon counters with nano second temporal resolution, and their joint spectrum is determined by using a narrow linewidth optical cavity. The energy-time entanglement is verified by the joint frequency-time uncertainty product of 0.063 +/- 0.0044, which does not only violate the separability criterion but also satisfies the continuous variable Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen st…
