Let $σ$ be a permutation on $n$ letters. We say that a permutation $τ$ is an even (resp. odd) $k$th root of $σ$ if $τ^k=σ$ and $τ$ is an even (resp. odd) permutation. In this article, we obtain generating functions for the number of even and odd $k$th roots of permutations. Our result implies know generating functions of Moser and Wyman and also some generating functions for sequences in The On-line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS).
Let m be a fixed positive integer. It is well-known that a permutation $σ$ may have one, many, or no mth roots. In this note we provide an explicit expression and a generating function for the number of mth roots of σ. Let p_m(n) be the probability that a random n-permutation has an mth root. We also include a proof that p_m(jq)=p_m(jq+1)=... =p_m(jq+(q-1)) where j=0,1,... and m is a power of prime q.
Tutte founded the theory of enumeration of planar maps in a series of papers in the 1960s. Rooted non-separable planar maps are in bijection with West-2-stack-sortable permutations, beta(1,0)-trees introduced by Cori, Jacquard and Schaeffer in 1997, as well as a family of permutations defined by the avoidance of two four letter patterns. In this paper we give upper and lower bounds on the number of multiple-edge-free rooted non-separable planar maps. We also use the bijection between rooted non-separable planar maps and a certain class of permutations, found by Claesson, Kitaev and Steingrimss…
We prove the conjecture by M. Yip stating that counting genus one partitions by the number of their elements and parts yields, up to a shift of indices, the same array of numbers as counting genus one rooted hypermonopoles. Our proof involves representing each genus one permutation by a four-colored noncrossing partition. This representation may be selected in a unique way for permutations containing no trivial cycles. The conclusion follows from a general generating function formula that holds for any class of permutations that is closed under the removal and reinsertion of trivial cycles. Ou…
A $k$-permutation family on $n$ vertices is a set system consisting of the intervals of $k$ permutations of the integers $1$ through $n$. The discrepancy of a set system is the minimum over all red-blue vertex colorings of the maximum difference between the number of red and blue vertices in any set in the system. In 2011, Newman and Nikolov disproved a conjecture of Beck that the discrepancy of any $3$-permutation family is at most a constant independent of $n$. Here we give a simpler proof that Newman and Nikolov's sequence of $3$-permutation families has discrepancy $Ω(\log n)$. We also exh…
Closed-form generating functions for counting one-face rooted hypermaps with a known number of darts by number of vertices and edges is found, using matrix integral expressions relating to the reduced density operator of a bipartite quantum system. A recursion relation for these generating functions is also found. The method for computing similar generating functions for two-face rooted hypermaps by number of vertices and edges is outlined.
In this paper, we study the relationship among left peaks, interior peaks and up-down runs of simsun permutations. Properties of the generating polynomials, including the recurrence relation, generating function and real-rootedness are studied. Moreover, we introduce and study simsun permutations of the second kind.
Geometric grid classes of permutations have proven to be key in investigations of classical permutation pattern classes. By considering the representation of gridded permutations as words in a trace monoid, we prove that every geometric grid class has a growth rate which is given by the square of the largest root of the matching polynomial of a related graph. As a consequence, we characterise the set of growth rates of geometric grid classes in terms of the spectral radii of trees, explore the influence of "cycle parity" on the growth rate, compare the growth rates of geometric grid classes ag…
Derivative polynomials in two variables are defined by repeated differentiation of the tangent and secant functions. We establish the connections between the coefficients of these derivative polynomials and the numbers of interior and left peaks over the symmetric group. Properties of the generating functions for the numbers of interior and left peaks over the symmetric group, including recurrence relations, generating functions and real-rootedness, are studied.
Recently, Gross et al. posed the LLC conjecture for the locally log-concavity of the genus distribution of every graph, and provided an equivalent combinatorial version, the CLLC conjecture, on the log-concavity of the generating function counting cycles of some permutation compositions. In this paper, we confirm the CLLC conjecture for cyclic permutations, with the aid of Hultman numbers and by applying the Hermite--Biehler theorem on the generating function of Stirling numbers of the first kind. This leads to a further conjecture that every local genus polynomial is real-rooted.
We prove a "decomposition lemma" that allows us to count preimages of certain sets of permutations under West's stack-sorting map $s$. As a first application, we give a new proof of Zeilberger's formula for the number of 2-stack-sortable permutations in $S_n$. Our proof generalizes, allowing us to find an algebraic equation satisfied by the generating function that counts 2-stack-sortable permutations according to length, number of descents, and number of peaks. The same method yields a recurrence relation for $W_3(n)$, the number of 3-stack-sortable permutations in $S_n$. We compute $W_3(n)$ …
In this paper we continue the study of permutations avoiding the vincular pattern $1-32-4$ by constructing a generating tree with a single label for these permutations. This construction finally provides a clearer explanation of why a certain recursive formula found by Callan actually counts these permutations, insofar as this formula was originally obtained only as a consequence of a very intricated bijection with a certain class of ordered rooted trees. This responds to a theoretical issue already raised by Duchi, Guerrini and Rinaldi. As a byproduct, we also obtain an algorithm to generate …
We study preimages of permutations under the bubblesort operator $\mathbf{B}$. We achieve a description of these preimages much more complete than what is known for the more complicated sorting operators $\mathbf{S}$ (stacksort) and $\mathbf{Q}$ (queuesort). We describe explicitly the set of preimages under $\mathbf{B}$ of any permutation $π$ from the left-to-right maxima of $π$, showing that there are $2^{k-1}$ such preimages if $k$ is the number of these left-to-right maxima. We further consider, for each $n$, the tree $T_n$ recording all permutations of size $n$ in its nodes, in which an ed…
Babson and Steingr\'ımsson introduced generalized permutation patterns that allow the requirement that two adjacent letters in a pattern must be adjacent in the permutation. We consider n-permutations that avoid the generalized pattern 1-32 and whose k rightmost letters form an increasing subword. The number of such permutations is a linear combination of Bell numbers. We find a bijection between these permutations and all partitions of an $(n-1)$-element set with one subset marked that satisfy certain additional conditions. Also we find the e.g.f. for the number of permutations that avoid a g…
In the symmetric group on a set of size 2n, let P_{2n} denote the conjugacy class of involutions with no fixed points (equivalently, we refer to these as ``pairings'', since each disjoint cycle has length 2). Harer and Zagier explicitly determined the distribution of the number of disjoint cycles in the product of a fixed cycle of length 2n and the elements of P_{2n}. Their famous result has been reproved many times, primarily because it can be interpreted as the genus distribution for 2-cell embeddings in an orientable surface,of a graph with a single vertex attached to n loops. In this paper…
We study the generating function for the number of even (or odd) permutations on n letters containing exactly $r\gs0$ occurrences of 132. It is shown that finding this function for a given r amounts to a routine check of all permutations in $S_{2r}$.
We study generating functions for the number of even (odd) permutations on n letters avoiding 132 and an arbitrary permutation $τ$ on k letters, or containing $τ$ exactly once. In several interesting cases the generating function depends only on k and is expressed via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.
Let $μ_{q+1}$ denote the set of $(q+1)$-th roots of unity in $\mathbb{F}_{q^2 }$. We construct permutation polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ by using rational functions of any degree that induce bijections either on $μ_{q+1}$ or between $μ_{q+1}$ and $\mathbb{F}_q \cup \{\infty\}$. In particular, we generalize results from Zieve.
Stirling permutations were introduced by Gessel and Stanley, who used their enumeration by the number of descents to give a combinatorial interpretation of certain polynomials related to Stirling numbers. Quasi-Stirling permutations, which can be viewed as labeled noncrossing matchings, were introduced by Archer et al. as a natural extension of Stirling permutations. Janson's correspondence between Stirling permutations and labeled increasing plane trees extends to a bijection between quasi-Stirling permutations and the same set of trees without the increasing restriction. Archer et al. posed …
MacMahon's classic theorem states that the 'length' and 'major index' statistics are equidistributed on the symmetric group S_n. By defining natural analogues or generalizations of those statistics, similar equidistribution results have been obtained for the alternating group A_n by Regev and Roichman, for the hyperoctahedral group B_n by Adin, Brenti and Roichman, and for the group of even-signed permutations D_n by Biagioli. We prove analogues of MacMahon's equidistribution theorem for the group of signed even permutations and for its subgroup of even-signed even permutations.
Solving the first nonmonotonic, longer-than-three instance of a classic enumeration problem, we obtain the generating function $H(x)$ of all 1342-avoiding permutations of length $n$ as well as an {\em exact} formula for their number $S_n(1342)$. While achieving this, we bijectively prove that the number of indecomposable 1342-avoiding permutations of length $n$ equals that of labeled plane trees of a certain type on $n$ vertices recently enumerated by Cori, Jacquard and Schaeffer, which is in turn known to be equal to the number of rooted bicubic maps enumerated by Tutte in 1963. Moreover, $H(…
We describe the distribution of the number and location of the fixed points of permu- tations that avoid the pattern 321 via a bijection with rooted plane trees on n + 1 vertices. Using the local limit theorem for Galton-Watson trees, we are able to give an explicit description of the limit of this distribution.
We prove bijectively that the total number of cycles of all even permutations of $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$ and the total number of cycles of all odd permutations of $[n]$ differ by $(-1)^n(n-2)!$, which was stated as an open problem by Miklós Bóna. We also prove bijectively the following more general identity: $$\sum_{i=1}^n c(n,i)\cdot i \cdot (-k)^{i-1} = (-1)^k k! (n-k-1)!,$$ where $c(n,i)$ denotes the number of permutations of $[n]$ with $i$ cycles.
We study the random composition of a small family of O(n^3) simple permutations on {0,1}^n. Specifically we ask how many randomly selected simple permutations need be composed to yield a permutation that is close to k-wise independent. We improve on the results of Gowers 1996 and Hoory, Magen, Myers and Rackoff 2004, and show that up to a polylogarithmic factor, n^2*k^2 compositions of random permutations from this family suffice. In addition, our results give an explicit construction of a degree O(n^3) Cayley graph of the alternating group of 2^n objects with a spectral gap Omega(2^{-n}/n^2),…
The derangement polynomial for the symmetric group enumerates derangements by the number of excedances. It can be interpreted as the local $h$-polynomial, in the sense of Stanley, of the barycentric subdivision of the simplex. Motivated by this interpretation, we define a derangement polynomial for the even-signed permutation group. The coefficients of this polynomial are nonnegative, symmetric and unimodal. We show that they enumerate derangements in the even-signed permutation group according to a notion of excedance, which is analogous to the one introduced by Brenti for signed permutations…
The symmetric inverse monoid, SIM(n), is the set of all partial one-to-one mappings from the set {1, 2, ... , n} to itself under the operation of composition. Earlier research on the symmetric inverse monoid delineated the process for determining whether an element of SIM(n) has a kth root. The problem of enumerating kth roots of a given element of SIM(n) has since been posed, which is solved in this work. In order to find the number of kth roots of an element, all that is needed is to know the cycle and path structure of the element. Conveniently, the cycle and cycle-free components may be co…
The action of a finite reflection group (type A) on its set of roots is understood as a permutation representation or group action. We show that this representation is an induced representation from a certain kind of parabolic subgroup. Furthermore, we use this representation to define a statistic (derived from the length function) on the set of roots. A possible application to Costas Arrays is hinted at in a proposition.
Recently, Lazar and Wachs (arXiv:1910.07651) showed that the (median) Genocchi numbers play a fundamental role in the study of the homogenized Linial arrangement and obtained two new permutation models (called D-permutations and E-permutations) for (median) Genocchi numbers. They further conjecture that the distributions of cycle numbers over the two models are equal. In a follow-up, Eu et al. (arXiv:2103.09130) further proved the gamma-positivity of the descent polynomials of even-odd descent permutations, which are in bijection with E-permutations by Foata's fundamental transformation. This …
In 2005 J.L. Waldspurger proved the following theorem: given a finite real reflection group $W$, the closed positive root cone is tiled by the images of the open weight cone under the action of the linear transformations $id-w$. Shortly thereafter E. Meinrencken extended the result to affine Weyl groups. P.V. Bibikov and V.S. Zhgoon then gave a uniform proof for a discrete reflection group acting on a simply-connected space of constant curvature. In this paper we show that the Waldspurger and Meinrenken theorems of type A give a new perspective on the combinatorics of the symmetric group. In p…
In order to study signed Eulerian numbers, we introduce permutations of a particular type, called parity-alternate permutations, because they take even and odd entries alternately. The objective of this paper is twofold. The first is to derive several properties of those permutations, by subdividing them into even and odd ones. The second is to discuss relationships between those and signed Eulerian numbers. Divisibility properties by prime powers are also deduced for signed Eulerian numbers and several related numbers.
We construct classes of permutation polynomials over F_{Q^2} by exhibiting classes of low-degree rational functions over F_{Q^2} which induce bijections on the set of (Q+1)-th roots of unity in F_{Q^2}. As a consequence, we prove two conjectures about permutation trinomials from a recent paper by Tu, Zeng, Hu and Li.
We define a new statistic $\mathsf{sor}$ on the set of colored permutations $\mathsf{G}_{r,n}$ and prove that it has the same distribution as the length function. For the set of restricted colored permutations corresponding to the arrangements of $n$ non-attacking rooks on a fixed Ferrers shape we show that the following two sequences of set-valued statistics are joint equidistributed: $(\ell,\mathsf{Rmil}^0,\mathsf{Rmil}^1,...,\mathsf{Rmil}^{r-1}$, $\mathsf{Lmil}^0,\mathsf{Lmil}^1,...,\mathsf{Lmil}^{r-1}$, $\mathsf{Lmal}^0,\mathsf{Lmal}^1,...,\mathsf{Lmal}^{r-1}$, $\mathsf{Lmap}^0,\mathsf{Lma…
Visontai conjectured in 2013 that the joint distribution of ascent and distinct nonzero value numbers on the set of subexcedant sequences is the same as that of descent and inverse descent numbers on the set of permutations. This conjecture has been proved by Aas in 2014, and the generating function of the corresponding bistatistics is the double Eulerian polynomial. Among the techniques used by Aas are the Möbius inversion formula and isomorphism of labeled rooted trees. In this paper we define a permutation code (that is, a bijection between permutations and subexcedant sequences) and show t…
A Parity Alternating Permutation of the set $[n] = \{1, 2,\ldots, n\}$ is a permutation with even and odd entries alternatively. We deal with parity alternating permutations having an odd entry in the first position, PAPs. We study the numbers that count the PAPs with even as well as odd parity. We also study a subclass of PAPs being derangements as well, Parity Alternating Derangements (PADs). Moreover, by considering the parity of these PADs we look into their statistical property of excedance.
We study questions of even-Wilf-equivalence, the analogue of Wilf-equivalence when attention is restricted to pattern avoidance by permutations in the alternating group. Although some Wilf-equivalence results break when considering even-Wilf-equivalence analogues, we prove that other Wilf-equivalence results continue to hold in the even-Wilf-equivalence setting. In particular, we prove that t(t-1)...321 and (t-1)(t-2)...21t are even-shape-Wilf-equivalent for odd t, paralleling a result (which held for all t) of Backelin, West, and Xin for shape-Wilf-equivalence. This allows us to classify the …
The well-known Worpitzky identity provides a connection between two bases of $\mathbb{Q}[x]$: The standard basis $(x+1)^n$ and the binomial basis ${{x+n-i} \choose {n}}$, where the Eulerian numbers for the Coxeter group of type $A$ (the symmetric group) serve as the entries of the transformation matrix. Brenti has generalized this identity to the Coxeter groups of types $B$ and $D$ (signed and even-signed permutations groups, respectively) using generating function techniques. Motivated by Foata-Schützenberger and Rawlings' proof for the Worpitzky identity in the symmetric group, we provide co…
A simple permutation is one that does not map a nontrivial interval onto an interval. It was recently proved by Albert and Atkinson that a permutation class with only finitely simple permutations has an algebraic generating function. We extend this result to enumerate permutations in such a class satisfying additional properties, e.g., the even permutations, the involutions, the permutations avoiding generalised permutations, and so on.
We construct an injection from the set of permutations of length $n$ that contain exactly one copy of the decreasing pattern of length $k$ to the set of permutations of length $n+2$ that avoid that pattern. We then prove that the generating function counting the former is not rational, and in the case when $k$ is even and $k\geq 4$, it is not even algebraic. We extend our injection and our nonrationality result to a larger class of patterns.
We characterize all permutations on even-by-even grids that maximally separate neighboring vertices. More precisely, let $n_1$, $n_2$ be positive even integers, let $I(n_1,n_2)=\{1,\dots,n_1\}\times\{1,\dots,n_2\}$ be the $n_1\times n_2$ grid, let $d$ be the $L_1$ metric on $I(n_1,n_2)$, and let $N=\{\{x,y\}\in I(n_1,n_2)\times I(n_1,n_2):d(x,y)=1\}$ be the set of neighbors in $I(n_1,n_2)$. We characterize all permutations $π$ of $I(n_1,n_2)$ that maximize $\sum_{\{x,y\}\in N} d(π(x),π(y))$.
We introduce and characterise grid classes, which are natural generalisations of other well-studied permutation classes. This characterisation allows us to give a new, short proof of the Fibonacci dichotomy: the number of permutations of length n in a permutation class is either at least as large as the nth Fibonacci number or is eventually polynomial.
For the calculation of Springer numbers (of root systems) of type $B_n$ and $D_n$, Arnold introduced a signed analogue of alternating permutations, called $β_n$-snakes, and derived recurrence relations for enumerating the $β_n$-snakes starting with $k$. The results are presented in the form of double triangular arrays ($v_{n,k}$) of integers, $1\le |k|\le n$. An Arnold family is a sequence of sets of such objects as $β_n$-snakes that are counted by $(v_{n,k})$. As a refinement of Arnold's result, we give analogous arrays of polynomials, defined by recurrence, for the calculation of the polynom…
The number of even 321-avoiding permutations of length n is equal to the number of odd ones if n is even, and exceeds it by the (n-1)/2th Catalan number otherwise. We present an involution that proves a refinement of this sign-balance property respecting the length of the longest increasing subsequence of the permutation. In addition, this yields a combinatorial proof of a recent analogous result of Adin and Roichman dealing with the last descent. In particular, we answer the question how to obtain the sign of a 321-avoiding permutation from the pair of tableaux resulting from the Robinson-Sch…
We study the descent distribution over the set of centrosymmetric permutations that avoid the pattern of length 3. Our main tool in the most puzzling case, namely, $τ=123$ and $n$ even, is a bijection that associates a Dyck prefix of length $2n$ to every centrosymmetric permutation in $S_{2n}$ that avoids 123.
We study a sorting procedure (run-sorting) on permutations, where runs are rearranged in lexicographic order. We describe a rather surprising bijection on permutations on length $n$, with the property that it sends the set of peak-values to the set of peak-values after run-sorting. We also prove that the expected number of descents in a permutation $σ\in S_{n}$ after run-sorting is equal to $(n-2)/3$. Moreover, we provide a closed form of the exponential generating function introduced by Nabawanda, Rakotondrajao and Bamunoba in 2020, for the number of run-sorted permutations of $[n]$, ($RSP(n)…
In this paper, we give a new bijective proof of a multiset analogue of even-odd permutations identity. This multiset version is equivalent to the original coin arrangements lemma which is a key combinatorial lemma in the Sherman's Proof of a conjecture of Feynman about an identity on paths in planar graphs related to combinatorial solution of two dimensional Ising model in statistical physics.
It is well-known that the Toffoli gate and the negation gate together yield a universal gate set, in the sense that every permutation of $\{0,1\}^n$ can be implemented as a composition of these gates. Since every bit operation that does not use all of the bits performs an even permutation, we need to use at least one auxiliary bit to perform every permutation, and it is known that one bit is indeed enough. Without auxiliary bits, all even permutations can be implemented. We generalize these results to non-binary logic: If $A$ is a finite set of odd cardinality then a finite gate set can genera…
Fix $q\neq 1$, and sample $w\in S_n$ from the Mallows measure. We study the distribution of $C_i(w)$, the number of $i$-cycles, as $n$ grows large. When $q<1$, they are jointly Gaussian, and this more or less follows from known ideas, but the regime $q>1$ behaves quite differently. In particular, we show that the even cycles $C_{2i}(w)$ have a mean and variance of order $n$, and jointly converge to Gaussian random variables, while the odd cycles $C_{2i+1}(w)$ have a bounded mean and variance, and converge to $C_{2i+1}(w^{even})$ or $C_{2i+1}(w^{odd})$ for some explicit random permutations $w^{…
