We give an example of a compact connected Lie group of the lowest rank such that the mod 2 cohomology ring of its classifying space has a nonzero nilpotent element.
We introduce partial formality and relate resonance with partial formality properties. For instance, we show that for finitely generated nilpotent groups that are k-formal, the resonance varieties are trivial up to degree k. We also show that the cohomology ring of a nilpotent k-formal group is generated in degree 1, up to degree k+1; this criterion is necessary and sufficient for 2-step nilpotent groups to be k-formal. We compute resonance varieties for Heisenberg-type groups and deduce the degree of partial formality for this class of groups.
Gromov and Ivanov established an analogue of Leray's theorem on cohomology of contractible covers for bounded cohomology of amenable covers. We present an alternative proof of this fact, using classifying spaces of families of subgroups.
In this paper, we compute the rational cohomology groups of the classifying space of a simply connected Kac-Moody group of infinite type. The fundamental principle is "from finite to infinite". That is, for a Kac-Moody group G(A) of infinite type, the input data for computation are the rational cohomology of classifying spaces of parabolic subgroups of G(A)(which are of finite type), and the homomorphisms induced by inclusions of these subgroups. In some special cases, we can further determine the cohomology rings. Our method also applies to study the mod p cohomology of the classifying spaces…
We study the structure of the $E_2$-term of the Rothenberg-Steenrod spectral sequence converging to the mod 3 cohomology of the classifying space of the compact, connected, simply connected, exceptional Lie group of rank 6.
We show that cellular approximations of nilpotent Postnikov stages are always nilpotent Postnikov stages, in particular classifying spaces of nilpotent groups are turned into classifying spaces of nilpotent groups. We use a modified Bousfield-Kan homology completion tower z_k X whose terms we prove are all X-cellular for any X. As straightforward consequences, we show that if X is K-acyclic and nilpotent for a given homology theory K, then so are all its Postnikov sections, and that any nilpotent space for which the space of pointed self-maps map_*(X,X) is "canonically" discrete must be aspher…
A gauge group is the topological group of automorphisms of a principal bundle. We compute the integral cohomology ring of the classifying spaces of gauge groups of principal U(n)-bundles over the 2-sphere by generalizing the operation for free loop spaces, called the free double suspension.
We show that the Rothenberg--Steenrod spectral sequence converging to the mod 3 cohomology of the classifying space of the exceptional Lie group E_8 does not collapse at the E_2-level.
We compute the cotorsion product of the mod 2 cohomology of spinor group spin(n), which is the E_2-term of the Rothenberg-Steenrod spectral sequence for the mod 2 cohomology of the classifying space of the spinor group spin(n). As a consequence of this computation, we show the non-collapsing of the Rothenberg-Steenrod spectral sequence for n > 16.
For a compact Lie group G we show that if the representing spectrum for Borel cohomology generates its category of modules if G is connected. For a closed subgroup H of G we consider the map C^*(BG)--->C^*(BH) and establish the sense in which it is relatively Gorenstein. Throughout, we pay careful attention to the importance of connectedness of the groups.
For n>2, we prove the mod 2 cohomology of the finite Chevalley group Spin_n(F_q) is isomorphic to that of the classifying space of the loop group of the spin group Spin(n).
We show that the cohomology group of the equivariant simplicial de Rham complex is isomorphic to the cohomology group of the classifying space of a semi-direct product group.
In this paper we study a relation between the cohomology ring of a regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety and Schubert polynomials. To describe an explicit presentation of the cohomology ring of a regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety, polynomials $f_{i,j}$ were introduced by Abe-Harada-Horiguchi-Masuda. We show that every polynomial $f_{i,j}$ is an alternating sum of certain Schubert polynomials.
We prove that the cohomology algebra of a conilpotent Lie coalgebra is generated in degree 1 as an A-infinity algebra. By dualizing, the same is true about cohomology algebras of finite dimensional nilpotent Lie algebras. In the process, we provide a proof of the conilpotent version of the dual Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt theorem.
N Kuhn has given several conjectures on the special features satisfied by the singular cohomology of topological spaces with coefficients in a finite prime field, as modules over the Steenrod algebra. The so-called realization conjecture was solved in special cases in [Ann. of Math. 141 (1995) 321-347] and in complete generality by L Schwartz [Invent. Math. 134 (1998) 211-227]. The more general strong realization conjecture has been settled at the prime 2, as a consequence of the work of L Schwartz [Algebr. Geom. Topol. 1 (2001) 519-548] and the subsequent work of F-X Dehon and the author [Alg…
This thesis consists of two main parts. In the second part, we recall how a description of local coefficients that Eilenberg introduced in the 1940s leads to spectral sequences for the computation of homology and cohomology with local coefficients. We then show how to construct new equivariant analogues of these spectral sequences for RO(G)-graded Bredon homology and cohomology. Finally, we use these spectral sequences to complete a sample calculation, in which we use the equivariant Serre spectral sequence and the equivariant cohomology of complex projective spaces to compute the cohomology o…
The spectral sequence associated to the Arone-Goodwillie tower for the n-fold loop space functor is used to show that the first two non-trivial layers of the nilpotent filtration of the reduced mod 2 cohomology of a (sufficiently connected) space with nilpotent cohomology are comparable. This relies upon the theory of unstable modules over the mod 2 Steenrod algebra, together with properties of a generalized class of almost unstable modules which is introduced here. An essential ingredient of the proof is a non-vanishing result for certain extension groups in the category of unstable modules l…
We study the mod p cohomology of the classifying space of the projective unitary group PU(p). We first proof that old conjectures due to J.F. Adams, and Kono and Yagita about the structure of the mod p cohomology of classifying space of connected compact Lie groups held in the case of PU(p). Finally, we proof that the classifying space of the projective unitary group PU(p) is determined by its mod p cohomology as an unstable algebra over the Steenrod algebra for p>3, completing previous works for the cases p=2,3.
The second de Rham cohomology groups of nilpotent orbits in non-compact real forms of classical complex simple Lie algebras are explicitly computed. Furthermore, the first de Rham cohomology groups of nilpotent orbits in non-compact classical simple Lie algebras are computed; they are proven to be zero for nilpotent orbits in all the complex simple Lie algebras. A key component in these computations is a description of the second and first cohomology groups of homogeneous spaces of general connected Lie groups which is obtained here. This description, which generalizes a previous theorem of th…
Let M be a closed simply connected 2n-dimensional manifold. The present paper is concerned with the cohomology of classifying spaces of connected groups of homeomorphisms of M.
Let $n$ be a positive integer. The main result of this manuscript is a construction of a filtration on the cohomology ring of a regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety in $GL(n,{\mathbb{C}})/B$ such that its associated graded ring has graded pieces (i.e., homogeneous components) isomorphic to rings which are related to the cohomology rings of Hessenberg varieties in $GL(n-1,{\mathbb{C}})/B$, showing the inductive nature of these rings. In previous work, the first two authors, together with Abe and Masuda, gave an explicit presentation of these cohomology rings in terms of generators and relations…
We investigate the integral cohomology ring and the Chow ring of the classifying space of the complex projective linear group PGL_p, when p is an odd prime. In particular, we determine its additive structure completely, and we reduce the problem of determing its multiplicative structure to a problem in invariant theory.
We compute the additive structure of the $\mathrm{RO}(C_n)$-graded Bredon equivariant cohomology of the equivariant classifying space $B_{C_n}\mathrm{SU}(2)$, for any $n$ that is either prime or a product of distinct odd primes, and we also compute its multiplicative structure for $n=2$. In particular, as an algebra over the cohomology of a point, we show that the cohomology of $B_{C_2}\mathrm{SU}(2)$ is generated by two elements subject to a single relation: writing $σ$ for the sign representation of $C_2$ in $\mathrm{RO}(C_2)$, the generators are an element $c$ in dimension $4σ$ and an eleme…
Complementing and extending the Inventiones work of Benson, Grodal, Henke [Group cohomology and control of p-fusion, Invent. Math. 197 (2014), 491--507] we give criteria for a space to have cohomology (strongly) F-isomorphic in the sense of Quillen to the stable elements. We extend results about groups models to fusion systems over discrete $p$-toral groups and profinite groups and provide various applications to the Kan-Thurston Theorem.
Let $\mathbf{B}PU_{n}$ be the classifying space of $PU_n$, the projective unitary group of order $n$, for $n>1$. We use the Serre spectral sequence associated to a fiber sequence $\mathbf{B}U_n\rightarrow\mathbf{B}PU_n\rightarrow K(\mathbb{Z},3)$ to determine the ring structure of $H^{*}(\mathbf{B}PU_{n}; \mathbb{Z})$ up to degree $10$, as well as a family of distinguished elements of $H^{2p+2}(\mathbf{B}PU_{n}; \mathbb{Z})$, for each prime divisor $p$ of $n$. We also study the primitive elements of $H^*(\mathbf{B}U_n;\mathbb{Z})$ as a comodule over $H^*(K(\mathbb{Z},2);\mathbb{Z})$, where the…
For each of the groups $G = O(2), SU(2), U(2)$, we compute the integral and $\mathbb{F}_2$-cohomology rings of $B_\text{com} G$ (the classifying space for commutativity of $G$), the action of the Steenrod algebra on the mod 2 cohomology, the homotopy type of $E_\text{com} G$ (the homotopy fiber of the inclusion $B_\text{com} G \to BG$), and some low-dimensional homotopy groups of $B_\text{com} G$.
This is the Ph.D. dissertation of the author. The project has been motivated by the conjecture that the Hopkins-Miller tmf spectrum can be described in terms of `spaces' of conformal field theories. In this dissertation, spaces of field theories are constructed as classifying spaces of categories whose objects are certain types of field theories. If such a category has a symmetric monoidal structure and its components form a group, by work of Segal, its classifying space is an infinite loop space and defines a cohomology theory. This has been carried out for two classes of field theories: (i) …
We study the classifying space of a twisted loop group $L_σG$ where $G$ is a compact Lie group and $σ$ is an automorphism of $G$ of finite order modulo inner automorphisms. Equivalently, we study the $σ$-twisted adjoint action of $G$ on itself. We derive a formula for the cohomology ring $H^*(BL_σG)$ and explicitly carry out the calculation for all automorphisms of simple Lie groups. More generally, we derive a formula for the equivariant cohomology of compact Lie group actions with constant rank stabilizers.
Given $X$ a finite nilpotent simplicial set, consider the classifying fibrations $$ X\to Baut_G^*(X)\to Baut_G(X),\qquad X\to Z\to Baut_π^*(X), $$ where $G$ and $π$ denote, respectively, subgroups of the free and pointed homotopy classes of free and pointed self homotopy equivalences of $X$ which act nilpotently on $H_*(X)$ and $π_*(X)$. We give algebraic models, in terms of complete differential graded Lie algebras (cdgl's), of the rational homotopy type of these fibrations. Explicitly, if $L$ is a cdgl model of $X$, there are connected sub cdgl's $Der^G L$ and $Der^π L$ of the Lie algebra $D…
The class of loop spaces whose mod p cohomology is Noetherian is much larger than the class of p-compact groups (for which the mod p cohomology is required to be finite). It contains Eilenberg-Mac Lane spaces such as the infinite complex projective space and 3-connected covers of compact Lie groups. We study the cohomology of the classifying space BX of such an object and prove it is as small as expected, that is, comparable to that of BCP^\infty. We also show that BX differs basically from the classifying space of a p-compact group in a single homotopy group. This applies in particular to 4-c…
We study the cohomology with twisted coefficients of the geometric realization of a linking system associated to a saturated fusion system $\mathcal{F}$. More precisely, we extend a result due to Broto, Levi and Oliver to twisted coefficients. We generalize the notion of $\mathcal{F}$-stable elements to $\mathcal{F}^c$-stable elements in a setting of cohomology with twisted coefficients by an action of the fundamental group.% or, in other word, with locally constant coefficients. We then study the problem of inducing an idempotent from an $\mathcal{F}$-characteristic $(S,S)$-biset and we show …
Let $G$ be a smooth connected reductive group over a field $k$ and $Γ$ be a central subgroup of $G$. We construct Eilenberg-Moore-type spectral sequences converging to the Hodge and de Rham cohomology of $B(G/Γ)$. As an application, building upon work of Toda and using Totaro's inequality, we show that for all $m\geq 0$ the Hodge and de Rham cohomology algebras of the classifying stacks $B\mathrm{PGL}_{4m+2}$ and $B\mathrm{PSO}_{4m+2}$ over $\mathbb{F}_2$ are isomorphic to the singular $\mathbb{F}_2$-cohomology of the classifying space of the corresponding Lie group. From this we obtain a full…
The present note presents some results about the mod-2 cohomology, modulo nilpotent elements elements of the fiber E of a decomposable map $ψ$ : K(Z, 2) $\rightarrow$ K(Z/2, p). This is more an announcement and a brief description of the tools that are used: Lannes' T functor and the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence.
This paper extends the relation established for group cohomology by Green, Hunton and Schuster between chromatic phenomena in stable homotopy theory and certain natural subrings of singular cohomology. This exploits the theory due to Henn, Lannes and Schwartz of unstable algebras over the Steenrod algebra localized away from nilpotents.
We study H^*(P), the mod p cohomology of a finite p--group P, viewed as an Out(P)--module. In particular, we study the conjecture, first considered by Martino and Priddy, that, if e_S in Z/p[Out(P)] is a primitive idempotent associated to an irreducible Z/p[Out(P)]--module S, then the Krull dimension of e_SH^*(P) equals the rank of P. The rank is an upper bound by Quillen's work, and the conjecture can be viewed as the statement that every irreducible Z/p[Out(P)]--module occurs as a composition factor in H^*(P) with similar frequency. In summary, our results are as follows. A strong form of th…
For any odd prime $p$, we prove that the induced homomorphism from the mod $p$ cohomology of the classifying space of a compact simply-connected simple connected Lie group to the Weyl group invariants of the mod $p$ cohomology of the classifying space of its maximal torus is an epimorphism except for the case $p=3$, $G=E_8$.
Let $n$ be a fixed positive integer and $h: \{1,2,...,n\} \rightarrow \{1,2,...,n\}$ a Hessenberg function. The main result of this manuscript is to give a systematic method for producing an explicit presentation by generators and relations of the equivariant and ordinary cohomology rings (with $\mathbb{Q}$ coefficients) of any regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety $\mathrm{Hess}(h)$ in type A. Specifically, we give an explicit algorithm, depending only on the Hessenberg function $h$, which produces the $n$ defining relations $\{f_{h(j),j}\}_{j=1}^n$ in the equivariant cohomology ring. Our resu…
This paper presents a commutative complex-oriented cohomology theory that realizes the Buchstaber formal group law localized away from 2. Also, the restriction of the classifying map of FB on special unitary cobordism ring localized away from 2 defines a four parameter genus, studied by Hoehn and Totaro.
We develop the basic theory of nilpotent types and their localizations away from sets of numbers in Homotopy Type Theory. For this, general results about the classifying spaces of fibrations with fiber an Eilenberg-Mac Lane space are proven. We also construct fracture squares for localizations away from sets of numbers. All of our proofs are constructive.
Categorifying the concept of topological group, one obtains the notion of a 'topological 2-group'. This in turn allows a theory of 'principal 2-bundles' generalizing the usual theory of principal bundles. It is well-known that under mild conditions on a topological group G and a space M, principal G-bundles over M are classified by either the first Cech cohomology of M with coefficients in G, or the set of homotopy classes [M,BG], where BG is the classifying space of G. Here we review work by Bartels, Jurco, Baas-Bokstedt-Kro, and others generalizing this result to topological 2-groups and eve…
In this manuscript we develop the theory of poset pinball, a combinatorial game recently introduced by Harada and Tymoczko for the study of the equivariant cohomology rings of GKM-compatible subspaces of GKM spaces. Harada and Tymoczko also prove that in certain circumstances, a successful outcome of Betti poset pinball yields a module basis for the equivariant cohomology ring of the GKM-compatible subspace. Our main contributions are twofold. First we construct an algorithm (which we call the dimension pair algorithm) which yields the result of a successful outcome of Betti poset pinball for …
We focus on the cohomology of the $k$-th nilpotent quotient of the free group, $F/F_k$. This paper describes all the group 2-, 3-cocycles in terms of Massey products, and gives expressions for some of the 3-cocycles. We also give simple proofs of some of the results on Milnor invariants and the Johnson-Morita homomorphisms.
Let $n$ be a fixed positive integer and $h: \{1,2,\ldots,n\} \rightarrow \{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ a Hessenberg function. The main results of this paper are twofold. First, we give a systematic method, depending in a simple manner on the Hessenberg function $h$, for producing an explicit presentation by generators and relations of the cohomology ring $H^\ast(Hess(\mathsf{N},h))$ with $\mathbb{Q}$ coefficients of the corresponding regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety $Hess(\mathsf{N},h)$. Our result generalizes known results in special cases such as the Peterson variety and also allows us to answer a q…
We compute the Chow-Witt rings of the classifying spaces for the symplectic and special linear groups. In the structural description we give, contributions from real and complex realization are clearly visible. In particular, the computation of cohomology with $\mathbf{I}^j$-coefficients is done closely along the lines of Brown's computation of integral cohomology for special orthogonal groups. The computations for the symplectic groups show that Chow-Witt groups are a symplectically oriented ring cohomology theory. Using our computations for special linear groups, we also discuss the question…
For almost any compact connected Lie group $G$ and any field $\mathbb{F}\_p$, we compute the Batalin-Vilkoviskyalgebra $H^{*+\text{dim }G}(LBG;\mathbb{F}\_p)$ on the loop cohomology of the classifying space introduced byChataur and the second author. In particular, if $p$ is odd or $p=0$, this Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra is isomorphicto the Hochschild cohomology $HH^*(H\_*(G),H\_*(G))$. Over $\mathbb{F}\_2$, such isomorphism of Batalin-Vilkovisky algebrasdoes not hold when $G=SO(3)$ or $G=G\_2$.
We develop a simple theory of André-Quillen cohomology for commutative differential graded algebras over a field of characteristic zero. We then relate it to the homotopy groups of function spaces and spaces of homotopy self-equivalences of rational nilpotent $CW$-complexes. This puts certain results of Sullivan in a more conceptual framework.
