Let $X,Y$ be Banach spaces, $(S_t)_{t \geq 0}$ a $C_0$-semigroup on $X$, $-A$ the corresponding infinitesimal generator on $X$, $C$ a bounded linear operator from $X$ to $Y$, and $T > 0$. We consider the system \[ \dot{x}(t) = -Ax(t), \quad y(t) = Cx(t) \quad t\in (0,T], \quad x(0) = x_0 \in X. \] We provide sufficient conditions such that this system satisfies a final state observability estimate in $L_r ((0,T) ; Y)$, $r \in [1,\infty]$. These sufficient conditions are given by an uncertainty relation and a dissipation estimate. Our approach unifies and generalizes the respective advantages from earlier results obtained in the context of Hilbert spaces. As an application we consider the example where $A$ is an elliptic operator in $L_p(\mathbb{R}^d)$ for $1<p<\infty$, and where $C = \mathbf{1}_ω$ is the restriction onto a thick set $ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$. In this case, we show that the above system satisfies a final state observability estimate if and only if $ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ is a thick set. Finally, we make use of the well-known relation between observability and null-controllability of the predual system, and investigate bounds on the corresponding control costs.
This paper generalizes the abstract method of proving an observability estimate by combining an uncertainty principle and a dissipation estimate. In these estimates we allow for a large class of growth/decay rates satisfying an integrability condition. In contrast to previous results, we use an iterative argument which enables us to give an asymptotically sharp estimate for the observation constant and which is explicit in the model parameters. We give two types of applications where the extension of the growth/decay rates naturally appear. By exploiting subordination techniques we show how th…
We study non-autonomous observation systems \begin{align*} \dot{x}(t) = A(t) x(t),\quad y(t) = C(t) x(t),\quad x(0) = x_0\in X, \end{align*} where $(A(t))$ is a strongly measurable family of closed operators on a Banach space $X$ and $(C(t))$ is a family of bounded observation operators from $X$ to a Banach space $Y$. Based on an abstract uncertainty principle and a dissipation estimate, we prove that the observation system satisfies a final-state observability estimate in $\mathrm{L}^r(E; Y)$ for measurable subsets $E \subseteq [0,T], T > 0$. We present applications of the above result to fam…
We study abstract sufficient criteria for open-loop stabilizability of linear control systems in a Banach space with a bounded control operator, which build up and generalize a sufficient condition for null-controllability in Banach spaces given by an uncertainty principle and a dissipation estimate. For stabilizability these estimates are only needed for a single spectral parameter and, in particular, their constants do not depend on the growth rate w.r.t. this parameter. Our result unifies and generalizes earlier results obtained in the context of Hilbert spaces. As an application we conside…
We study (approximate) null-controllability of parabolic equations in $L_p(\mathbb{R}^d)$ and provide explicit bounds on the control cost. In particular we consider systems of the form $\dot{x}(t) = -A_p x(t) + \mathbf{1}_E u(t)$, $x(0) = x_0\in L_p (\mathbb{R}^d)$, with interior control on a so-called thick set $E \subset \mathbb{R}^d$, where $p\in [1,\infty)$, and where $A$ is an elliptic operator of order $m \in \mathbb{N}$ in $L_p(\mathbb{R}^d)$. We prove null-controllability of this system via duality and a sufficient condition for observability. This condition is given by an uncertainty …
The main goal of this paper is to prove a two-weight criteria for multidimensio-nal Hardy type operator from weighted Lebesgue spaces into $p$-convex weighted Banach function spaces. Analogously problem for the dual operator is considered. As application we prove a two-weight criteria for boundedness of multidimensional geometric mean operator and sufficient condition on the weights for boundedness of certain sublinear operator from weighted Lebesgue spaces into weighted Musielak-Orlicz spaces.
We extend the well known criteria of reflexivity of Banach lattices due to Lozanovsky and Lotz to the class of finitely generated Banach $C(K)$- modules. Namely we prove that a finitely generated Banach $C(K)$-module is reflexive if and only if it does not contain any subspace isomorphic to either $l^1$ or $c_0$.
Stopping-time Banach spaces is a collective term for the class of spaces of eventually null integrable processes that are defined in terms of the behaviour of the stopping times with respect to some fixed filtration. From the point of view of Banach space theory, these spaces in many regards resemble the classical spaces such as $L^1$ or $C(Δ)$, but unlike these, they do have unconditional bases. In the present paper we study the canonical bases in the stopping-time spaces in relation to factorising the identity operator thereon. Since we work exclusively with the dyadic-tree filtration, this …
We show that, given a Banach space and a generator of an exponentially stable $C_{0}$-semigroup, a weakly admissible operator $g(A)$ can be defined for any $g$ bounded, analytic function on the left half-plane. This yields an (unbounded) functional calculus. The construction uses a Toeplitz operator and is motivated by system theory. In separable Hilbert spaces, we even get admissibility. Furthermore, it is investigated when a bounded calculus can be guaranteed. For this we introduce the new notion of exact observability by direction. Finally, it is shown that the calculus coincides with one f…
As is well-know, on an Arens regular Banach algebra all continuous functionals are weakly almost periodic. In this paper we show that $\ell^1$-bases which approximate upper and lower triangles of products of elements in the algebra produce large sets of functionals that are not weakly almost periodic. This leads to criteria for extreme non-Arens regularity of Banach algebras in the sense of Granirer. We find in particular that bounded approximate identities (bai's) and bounded nets converging to invariance (TI-nets) both fall into this approach, suggesting that this is indeed the main tool beh…
This paper is devoted to the study of the relatively compact sets in Quasi-Banach function spaces, providing an important improvement of the known results. As an application, we take the final step in establishing a relative compactness criteria for function spaces with any weight without any assumption.
We prove new characterisations of exponential stability for positive linear discrete-time systems in ordered Banach spaces, in terms of small-gain conditions. Such conditions have played an important role in the finite-dimensional systems theory, but are relatively unexplored in the infinite-dimensional setting, yet. Our results are applicable to discrete-time systems in ordered Banach spaces that have a normal and generating positive cone. Moreover, we show that our stability criteria can be considerably simplified if the cone has non-empty interior or if the operator under consideration is q…
We give two integrability criteria for representations of Banach--Lie algebras as skew-symmetric unbounded operators on a dense domain of a Hilbert space.
We study some properties of the randomized series and their applications to the geometric structure of Banach spaces. For $n\ge 2$ and $1<p<\infty$, it is shown that $\ell_\infty^n$ is representable in a Banach space $X$ if and only if it is representable in the Lebesgue-Bochner $L_p(X)$. New criteria for various convexity properties in Banach spaces are also studied. It is proved that a Banach lattice $E$ is uniformly monotone if and only if its $p$-convexification $E^{(p)}$ is uniformly convex and that a Köthe function space $E$ is upper locally uniformly monotone if and only if its $p$-conv…
There are two main aims of the paper. The first one is to extend the criterion for the precompactness of sets in Banach function spaces to the setting of quasi-Banach function spaces. The second one is to extend the criterion for the precompactness of sets in the Lebesgue spaces $L_p(\mathbb R^n)$, $1 \leq p < \infty$, to the so-called power quasi-Banach function spaces. These criteria are applied to establish compact embeddings of abstract Besov spaces into quasi-Banach function spaces. The results are illustrated on embeddings of Besov spaces $B^s_{p,q}(\mathbb R^n)$, $0<s<1$, $0<p,q\leq \in…
Let $ψ$ be a Bernstein function. A.~Carasso and T.~Kato obtained necessary and sufficient conditions for $ψ$ to have a property that $ψ(A)$ generates a quasibounded holomorphic semigroup for every generator $A$ of a bounded $C_0$-semigroup in a Banach space, in terms of some convolution semigroup of measures associated with $ψ$. We give an alternative to Carasso-Kato's criterium, and derive several sufficient conditions for $ψ$ to have the above-mentioned property.
We study a class of nonlinear implicit fractional differential equations subject to nonlocal boundary conditions expressed in terms of nonlinear integro-differential equations. Using the Krasnosel'skii fixed point theorem we prove, via the Kolmogorov--Riesz criteria, existence of solutions. The existence results are established in a specific fractional derivative Banach space and they are illustrated by two numerical examples.
The classical criterion for compactness in Banach spaces of functions can be reformulated into a simple tightness condition in the time-frequency domain. This description preserves more explicitly the symmetry between time and frequency than the classical conditions. The result is first stated and proved for L^2(R^d), and then generalized to coorbit spaces. As special cases, we obtain new characterizations of compactness in Besov-Triebel-Lizorkin spaces, modulation spaces and Bargmann-Fock spaces.
The first part of this article is a brief survey of the properties of so-called almost interior points in ordered Banach spaces. Those vectors can be seen as a generalization of ``functions which are strictly positive almost everywhere'' on $L^p$-spaces and of ``quasi-interior points'' in Banach lattices. In the second part we study the long--term behaviour of strongly positive operator semigroups on ordered Banach spaces; these are semigroups which, in a sense, map every non-zero positive vector to an almost interior point. Using the Jacobs--de Leeuw--Glicksberg decomposition together with th…
The Aubin-Lions lemma and its variants play crucial roles for the existence of weak solutions of nonlinear evolutionary PDEs. In this paper, we aim to develop some compactness criteria that are analogies of the Aubin--Lions lemma for the existence of weak solutions to time fractional PDEs. We first define the weak Caputo derivatives of order $γ\in (0,1)$ for functions valued in general Banach spaces, consistent with the traditional definition if the space is $\mathbb{R}^d$ and functions are absolutely continuous. Based on a Volterra type integral form, we establish some time regularity estimat…
We study the existence of global implicit functions for equations defined on open subsets of Banach spaces. The partial derivative with respect to the second variable is only required to have a left inverse instead of being invertible. Generalizing known results, we provide sufficient criteria which are easy to check. These conditions essentially rely on the existence of diffeomorphisms between the respective projections of the set of zeros and appropriate Banach spaces, as well as a corresponding growth bound. The projections further allow to consider cases where the global implicit function …
We systematize and generalize recent results of Gerlach and Glück on the strong convergence and spectral theory of bounded (positive) operator semigroups $(T_s)_{s\in S}$ on Banach spaces (lattices). (Here, $S$ can be an arbitrary commutative semigroup, and no topological assumptions neither on $S$ nor on its representation are required.) To this aim, we introduce the "semigroup at infinity" and give useful criteria ensuring that the well-known Jacobs--de Leeuw--Glicksberg splitting theory can be applied to it. Next, we confine these abstract results to positive semigroups on Banach lattices w…
We study Li-Yorke chaos and distributional chaos for operators on Banach spaces. More precisely, we characterize Li-Yorke chaos in terms of the existence of irregular vectors. Sufficient "computable" criteria for distributional and Li-Yorke chaos are given, together with the existence of dense scrambled sets under some additional conditions. We also obtain certain spectral properties. Finally, we show that every infinite dimensional separable Banach space admits a distributionally chaotic operator which is also hypercyclic.
Let $E$ be a Banach space, and $\mathcal B(E)$ the algebra of all bounded linear operators on $E$. The question of amenability of $\mathcal B(E)$ goes back to Johnson's seminal memoir \cite{johnson} from 1972. We present the first general criteria applying to very wide classes of Banach spaces, given in terms of the Banach space geometry of $E$, which imply that $\mathcal B(E)$ is non-amenable. We cover all spaces for which this is known so far (with the exception of one particular example), with much shorter proofs, such as $\ell_p$ for $p \in [1, \infty]$ and $c_0$, but also many new spaces:…
We develop a theory of large scale geometry of metrisable topological groups that, in a significant number of cases, allows one to define and identify a unique quasi-isometry type intrinsic to the topological group. Moreover, this quasi-isometry type coincides with the classical notion in the case of compactly generated locally compact groups and, for the additive group of a Banach space, is simply that of the corresponding Banach space. In particular, we characterise the class of separable metrisable groups admitting metrically proper, respectively, maximal compatible left-invariant metrics. …
In this paper we develop two types of tools to deal with differentiability properties of vectors in continuous representations $π\: G \to \GL(V)$ of an infinite dimensional Lie group $G$ on a locally convex space $V$. The first class of results concerns the space $V^\infty$ of smooth vectors. If $G$ is a Banach--Lie group, we define a topology on the space $V^\infty$ of smooth vectors for which the action of $G$ on this space is smooth. If $V$ is a Banach space, then $V^\infty$ is a Fréchet space. This applies in particular to $C^*$-dynamical systems $(\cA,G, α)$, where $G$ is a Banach--Lie gr…
Consider a $C_0$-semigroup $(e^{tA})_{t \ge 0}$ on a function space or, more generally, on a Banach lattice $E$. We prove a sufficient criterion for the operators $e^{tA}$ to be positive for all sufficiently large times $t$, while the semigroup itself might not be positive. This complements recently established criteria for the individual orbits of the semigroup to become eventually positive for all positive initial values. We apply our main result to study the qualitative behaviour of the solutions to various partial differential equations.
We consider the coorbit theory associated to general continuous wavelet transforms arising from a square-integrable, irreducible quasi-regular representation of a semidirect product group $G = \mathbb{R}^d \rtimes H$. The existence of coorbit spaces for this very general setting has been recently established, together with concrete vanishing moment criteria for analyzing vectors and atoms that can be used in the coorbit scheme. These criteria depend on fairly technical assumptions on the dual action of the dilation group, and it is one of the chief purposes of this paper to considerably simpli…
We study Daugavet- and $Δ$-points in Banach spaces. A norm one element $x$ is a Daugavet-point (respectively a $Δ$-point) if in every slice of the unit ball (respectively in every slice of the unit ball containing $x$) you can find another element of distance as close to $2$ from $x$ as desired. In this paper we look for criteria and properties ensuring that a norm one element is not a Daugavet- or $Δ$-point. We show that asymptotically uniformly smooth spaces and reflexive asymptotically uniformly convex spaces do not contain $Δ$-points. We also show that the same conclusion holds true for th…
In this paper, we deal with a notion of Banach space-valued mappings defined on a set consisting of finite graphs with uniformly bounded vertex degree. These functions will be endowed with certain boundedness and additivity criteria. We examine their normalized long-term behaviour along a particular class of graph sequences. Using techniques developed by Elek, we show convergence in the topology of the Banach space if the corresponding graph sequence possesses a hyperfinite structure. These considerations extend and complement the corresponding results for amenable groups. As an application, w…
Let ${\mathfrak M}=({\mathcal M},ρ)$ be a metric space and let $X$ be a Banach space. Let $F$ be a set-valued mapping from ${\mathcal M}$ into the family ${\mathcal K}_m(X)$ of all compact convex subsets of $X$ of dimension at most $m$. The main result in our recent joint paper with Charles Fefferman (which is referred to as a "Finiteness Principle for Lipschitz selections") provides efficient conditions for the existence of a Lipschitz selection of $F$, i.e., a Lipschitz mapping $f:{\mathcal M}\to X$ such that $f(x)\in F(x)$ for every $x\in{\mathcal M}$. We give new alternative proofs of this…
In 1931, Banach proved that, far from being exceptional objects, the Weierstrass functions form a residual set in the space $\mathcal{C}[0,1]$ of continuous functions. Later on, in 1966, V. I. Gurariy showed that, except for zero, there is an infinite-dimensional linear subspace of Weierstrass functions. This was the first example of \textit{lineability}. Over the last decade, this topic has attracted the continuous attention of the mathematical community, with a steady stream of papers being published, many of them in highly ranked mathematical journals. Several lineability criteria are known…
Several local geometric properties of Orlicz space $L_ϕ$ are presented for an increasing Orlicz function $ϕ$ which is not necessarily convex, and thus $L_ϕ$ does not need to be a Banach space. In addition to monotonicity of $ϕ$ it is supposed that $ϕ(u^{1/p})$ is convex for some $p>0$ which is equivalent to that its lower Matuszewska-Orlicz index $α_ϕ>0$. Such spaces are locally bounded and are equipped with natural quasi-norms. Therefore many local geometric properties typical for Banach spaces can also be studied in those spaces. The techniques however have to be different, since duality the…

We provide with criteria for a family of sequences of operators to share a frequently universal vector. These criteria are variants of the classical Frequent Hypercyclicity Criterion and of a recent criterion due to Grivaux, Matheron and Menet where periodic points play the central role. As an application, we obtain for any operator T in a specific class of operators acting on a separable Banach space, a necessary and sufficient condition on a subset $Λ$ of the complex plane for the family {$λ$T : $λ$ $\in$ $Λ$} to have a common frequently hypercyclic vector. In passing, this permits us to eas…
We consider two $C_0$-semigroups on function spaces or, more generally, Banach lattices and give necessary and sufficient conditions for the orbits of the first semigroup to dominate the orbits of the second semigroup for large times. As an important special case we consider an $L^2$-space and self-adjoint operators $A$ and $B$ which generate $C_0$-semigroups; in this situation we give criteria for the existence of a time $t_1 \ge 0$ such that $e^{tB} \ge e^{tA}$ for all subsequent times $t\ge t_1$. As a consequence of our abstract theory, we obtain many surprising insights into the behaviour …
In this paper we obtain some practical criteria to bound the multiplication operator in Sobolev spaces with respect to measures in curves. As a consequence of these results, we characterize the weighted Sobolev spaces with bounded multiplication operator, for a large class of weights. To have bounded multiplication operator has important consequences in Approximation Theory: it implies the uniform bound of the zeros of the corresponding Sobolev orthogonal polynomials, and this fact allows to obtain the asymptotic behavior of Sobolev orthogonal polynomials. We also obtain some non-trivial resul…
Let $T$ be a positive operator on a complex Banach lattice. It is a long open problem whether the peripheral spectrum $σ_{\operatorname{per}}(T)$ of $T$ is always cyclic. We consider several growth conditions on $T$, involving its eigenvectors or its resolvent, and show that these conditions provide new sufficient criteria for the cyclicity of the peripheral spectrum of $T$. Moreover we give an alternative proof of the recent result that every (WS)-bounded positive operator has cyclic peripheral spectrum. We also consider irreducible operators $T$. If such an operator is Abel bounded, then it …
We consider the abstract Cauchy problem x'=Ax, x(0)=x_0\in D(A) for linear operators A on a Banach space X. We prove uniqueness of the (local) solution of this problem for a natural class of operators A. Moreover, we establish that the solution x(\cdot) can be represented as a limit of sequence F(t/n)^{n} as n\to\infty in the weak operator topology, where a function F:[0,\infty)\to L(X) satisfies F'(0)y=Ay, y\in D(A). As a consequence, we deduce necessary and sufficient conditions that a linear operator C is closable and its closure is a generator of C_0-semigroup. We also obtain some criteria…
