The relations between two construction methods (called multiplier and embedding methods) for conserved currents of general systems of ordinary or partial differential equations (DEs) are investigated. Recent studies indicate that the multiplier method, which is a generalization of Noether's theorem, has significant advantages in comparison with the embedding method, which uses adjoint-symmetry/symmetry pairs and is based on embedding the original system of DEs in a larger one that follows from a Lagrangian. In particular, the multiplier method can generally give a wider range of conserved currents than the embedding method. In this paper simple extended forms of general systems of DEs, obtained by treating parameters present in the equations or introduced into them as dependent variables, are studied. A variant of a fundamental result on the connection between the embedding method and the action of symmetries on conserved currents that correspond to a multiplier is derived for the extended systems of DEs. Using this connection and by considering particular extensions that endow the extended DEs with scaling symmetry, it is shown that the embedding method becomes significantly stronger if it is also allowed to be applied to the extended forms of the original DEs. It is also shown that up to equivalence the multipliers of an extended DE system contain the parametric multipliers of the original system together with the derivatives of the corresponding conserved currents with respect to the parameters.
The relation between symmetries and conservation laws for solitons in a ferromagnet is complicated by the presence of gyroscopic (precessional) forces, whose description in the Lagrangian framework involves a background gauge field. This makes canonical momenta gauge-dependent and requires a careful application of Noether's theorem. We show that Cartan's theory of differential forms is a natural language for this task. We use it to derive conserved momenta of the Belavin--Polyakov skyrmion, whose symmetries include translation, global spin rotation, and dilation.
A general method using multipliers for finding the conserved integrals for any system of partial differential equations (PDEs) is reviewed and further developed in several ways. Multipliers are expressions whose (summed) product with a PDE (system) yields a local divergence identity which has the physical meaning of a continuity equation involving a conserved density and a spatial flux for solutions of the PDE (system). On spatial domains, the integral form of a continuity equation yields a conserved integral. When a PDE (system) is variational, multipliers correspond to symmetries of the vari…
A gauged bi-differential calculus over an associative (and not necessarily commutative) algebra A is an N-graded left A-module with two covariant derivatives acting on it which, as a consequence of certain (e.g., nonlinear differential) equations, are flat and anticommute. As a consequence, there is an iterative construction of generalized conserved currents. We associate a gauged bi-differential calculus with the Korteweg-de-Vries equation and use it to compute conserved densities of this equation.
We construct conformal three-point functions in momentum space with a general tensor and conserved currents of spin $1$ and $2$. While conformal correlators in momentum space have been studied especially in the connection with cosmology, correlators involving a tensor of general spin and scaling dimension have not been studied very much yet. Such a direction is unavoidable when we go beyond three-point functions because general tensors always appear as an intermediate state. In this paper, as a first step, we solve the Ward-Takahashi identities for correlators of a general tensor and conserved…
In Hamiltonian mechanics, a (continuous) symmetry leads to conserved quantity, which is a function on (extended) phase space. In Nambu mechanics, a straightforward consequence of symmetry is just a relative integral invariant, a differential form which only upon integration over a cycle provides a conserved real number. The origin of the difference may be traced back to a shift in degrees of relevant forms present in equations of motion, or, alternatively, to a corresponding shift in degrees of relevant objects in action integral for Nambu mechanics.
A new method (by Kersten, Krasil'shchik and Verbovetsky), based on the theory of differential coverings, allows to relate a system of PDEs with a differential operator in such a way that the operator maps symmetries/conserved quantities into symmetries/conserved quantities of the system of PDEs. When applied to a quasilinear first-order system of PDEs and a Dubrovin-Novikov homogeneous Hamiltonian operator the method yields conditions on the operator and the system that have interesting differential and projective geometric interpretations.
The Leibniz rule for fractional Riemann-Liouville derivative is studied in algebra of functions defined by Laplace convolution. This algebra and the derived Leibniz rule are used in construction of explicit form of stationary-conserved currents for linear fractional differential equations. The examples of the fractional diffusion in 1+1 and the fractional diffusion in d+1 dimensions are discussed in detail. The results are generalized to the mixed fractional-differential and mixed sequential fractional-differential systems for which the stationarity-conservation laws are obtained. The derived …
Although it is well known that the Ward identities prohibit anomalous dimensions for conserved currents in local field theories, a claim from certain holographic models involving bulk dilaton couplings is that the gauge field associated with the boundary current can acquire an anomalous dimension. We resolve this conundrum by showing that all the bulk actions that produce anomalous dimensions for the conserved current generate non-local actions at the boundary. In particular, the Maxwell equations are fractional. To prove this, we generalize to p-forms the Caffarelli/Silvestre (CS) extension t…
We establish a version of the first Noether Theorem, according to which the (equivalence classes of) conserved quantities of given Euler-Lagrange equations in several independent variables are in one-to-one correspondence with the (equivalence classes of) vector fields satisfying an appropriate pair of geometric conditions, namely: (a) they preserve the class of vector fields tangent to holonomic submanifolds of a jet space; (b) they leave invariant the action, from which the Euler-Lagrange equations are derived, modulo terms identically vanishing along holonomic submanifolds. Such corresponde…
In this work we study the general system of geodesic equations for the case of a massive particle moving on an arbitrary curved manifold. The investigation is carried out from the symmetry perspective. By exploiting the parametrization invariance property of the system we define nonlocal conserved charges that are independent from the typical integrals of motion constructed out of possible Killing vectors/tensors of the background metric. We show that with their help every two dimensional surface can - at least in principle - be characterized as integrable. Due to the nonlocal nature of these …
We solve explicitely the differential system obtained by Peres for the construction of a conserved vector associated to any central potential. We then obtain a very direct access to the discontinuous behavior of this Fradkin-Bacry-Ruegg-Souriau perihelion vector.
Mean Field Game is a rather new field initially developed in applied mathematics and engineering in order to deal with the dynamics of a large number of controlled agents or objects in interaction. For a large class of these models, there exists a deep relationship between the associated system of equations and the non linear Schrödinger equation, which allows to get new insights on the structure of their solutions. In this work, we deal with related aspects of integrability for such systems, exhibiting in some cases a full hierarchy of conserved quantities, and bringing some new questions whi…
Conserved currents associated with the time translation and axial symmetries of the Kerr spacetime and with scaling symmetry are constructed for the Teukolsky Master Equation (TME). Three partly different approaches are taken, of which the third one applies only to the spacetime symmetries. The results yielded by the three approaches, which correspond to three variants of Noether's theorem, are essentially the same, nevertheless. The construction includes the embedding of the TME into a larger system of equations, which admits a Lagrangian and turns out to consist of two TMEs with opposite spi…
Arbitrary diffeomorphically invariant metric-torsion theories of gravity are considered. It is assumed that Lagrangians of such theories contain derivatives of field variables (tensor densities of arbitrary ranks and weights) up to a second order only. The generalized Klein-Noether methods for constructing manifestly covariant identities and conserved quantities are developed. Manifestly covariant expressions are constructed without including auxiliary structures like a background metric. In the Riemann-Cartan space, the following \emph{manifestly generally covariant results} are presented: (a…
Scaling and hyperscaling laws provide exact relations among critical exponents describing the behavior of a system at criticality. For nonequilibrium growth models with a conserved drift there exist few of them. One such relation is $α+z=4$, found to be inexact in a renormalization group calculation for several classical models in this field. Herein we focus on the two-dimensional case and show that it is possible to construct conserved surface growth equations for which the relation $α+z=4$ is exact in the renormalization group sense. We explain the presence of this scaling law in terms of th…
In this work we relate the spectral problem of the toroidal six-vertex model's transfer matrix with the theory of integrable non-linear differential equations. More precisely, we establish an analogy between the Classical Inverse Scattering Method and previously proposed functional equations originating from the Yang-Baxter algebra. The latter equations are then regarded as an Auxiliary Linear Problem allowing us to show that the six-vertex model's spectrum solves Riccati-type non-linear differential equations. Generating functions of conserved quantities are expressed in terms of determinants…
The existence of an infinite set of conserved currents in completely integrable classical models, including chiral and Toda models as well as the KP and self-dual Yang-Mills equations, is traced back to a simple construction of an infinite chain of closed (respectively, covariantly constant) 1-forms in a (gauged) bi-differential calculus. The latter consists of a differential algebra on which two differential maps act. In a gauged bi-differential calculus these maps are extended to flat covariant derivatives.
A computational classification of contact symmetries and higher-order local symmetries that do not commute with $t,x$, as well as local conserved densities that are not invariant under $t,x$ is carried out for a generalized version of the Krichever-Novikov equation. Several new results are obtained. First, the Krichever-Novikov equation is explicitly shown to have a local conserved density that contains $t,x$. Second, apart from the dilational point symmetries known for special cases of the Krichever-Novikov equation and its generalized version, no other local symmetries with low differential …
We study the linear response of a spin current to a small electric field in a two-dimensional crystalline insulator with non-conserved spin. We adopt the spin current operator proposed in [J. Shi et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 076604 (2006)], which satisfies a continuity equation and fits the Onsager relations. We use the time-independent perturbation theory to present a formula for the spin Hall conductivity, which consists of a "Chern-like" term, reminiscent of the Kubo formula obtained for the quantum Hall systems, and a correction term that accounts for the non-conservation of spin. We illus…
This letter investigates the Lie point symmetries and conserved quantities of the Lagrangian systems on time scales, which unify the Lie symmetries of the two cases for the continuous and the discrete Lagrangian systems. By defining the infinitesimal transformations' generators and using the invariance of differential equations under infinitesimal transformations, the determining equations of the Lie symmetries on time scales are established. Then the structure equations and the form of conserved quantities with delta derivatives are obtained. The letter also gives brief discussion on the Lie …
In this paper we study the relation between conserved quantities of nonholonomic systems and the hamiltonization problem employing the geometric methods of [1,3]. We illustrate the theory with classical examples describing the dynamics of solids of revolution rolling without sliding on a plane. In these cases, using the existence of two conserved quantities we obtain, by means of 'gauge transformations' and symmetry reduction, genuine Poisson brackets describing the reduced dynamics.
