We generalize the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm to the insertion of two row arrays of multisets. This generalization leads to new enumerative results that have representation theoretic interpretations as decompositions of centralizer algebras and the spaces they act on. In addition, restrictions on the multisets lead to further identities and representation theory analogues. For instance, we obtain a bijection between words of length $k$ with entries in $[n]$ and pairs of tableaux of the same shape with one being a standard Young tableau of size $n$ and the other being a standard multiset tableau of content $[k]$. We also obtain an algorithm from partition diagrams to pairs of a standard tableau and a standard multiset tableau of the same shape, which has the remarkable property that it is well-behaved with respect to restricting a representation to a subalgebra. This insertion algorithm matches recent representation-theoretic results of Halverson and Jacobson.
It is well-known that two conjugate partitions have the same hook multiset. But two different partitions with the same hook multiset may not be conjugate to each other. In $1977$, Herman and Chung proposed the following question: What are the necessary and sufficient conditions for partitions to be determined by their hook multisets up to conjugation? In this paper, we will answer this question by giving a criterion to determine whether two different partitions with the same hook multiset are conjugate to each other.
R. Sulzgruber's rim hook insertion and the Hillman-Grassl correspondence are two distinct bijections between the reverse plane partitions of a fixed partition shape and multisets of rim-hooks of the same partition shape. It is known that Hillman-Grassl may be equivalently defined using the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence, and we show the analogous result for Sulzgruber's insertion. We refer to our description of Sulzgruber's insertion as diagonal RSK. As a consequence of this equivalence, we show that Sulzgruber's map from multisets of rim hooks to reverse plane partitions can be expre…
A classical result of MacMahon states that inversion number and major index have the same distribution over permutations of a given multiset. In this work we prove a strengthening of this theorem originally conjectured by Haglund. Our result can be seen as an equidistribution theorem over the ordered partitions of a multiset into sets, which we call ordered multiset partitions. Our proof is bijective and involves a new generalization of Carlitz's insertion method. This generalization leads to a new extension of Macdonald polynomials for hook shapes. We use our main theorem to show that these p…
We introduce the multiset partition algebra, ${\rm M\!P}_{r,k}(x)$, that has bases elements indexed by multiset partitions, where $x$ is an indeterminate and $r$ and $k$ are non-negative integers. This algebra can be realized as a diagram algebra that generalizes the partition algebra. When $x$ is an integer greater or equal to $2r$, we show that ${\rm M\!P}_{r,k}(x)$ is isomorphic to a centralizer algebra of the symmetric group, $S_n$, acting on the polynomial ring on the variables $x_{ij}$, $1\leq i \leq n$ and $1\leq j\leq k$. We describe the representations of ${\rm M\!P}_{r,k}(x)$, branch…
We provide a crystal structure on the set of ordered multiset partitions, which recently arose in the pursuit of the Delta Conjecture. This conjecture was stated by Haglund, Remmel and Wilson as a generalization of the Shuffle Conjecture. Various statistics on ordered multiset partitions arise in the combinatorial analysis of the Delta Conjecture, one of them being the minimaj statistic, which is a variant of the major index statistic on words. Our crystal has the property that the minimaj statistic is constant on connected components of the crystal. In particular, this yields another proof of…
Let $n$ be a non-negative integer and $A=\{a_1,\ldots,a_k\}$ be a multi-set with $k$ not necessarily distinct members, where $a_1\leqslant\ldots\leqslant a_k$. We denote by $Δ(n,A)$ the number of ways to partition $n$ as the form $a_1x_1+\ldots+a_kx_k$, where $x_i$'s are distinct positive integers and $x_i< x_{i+1}$ whenever $a_i=a_{i+1}$. We give a recursive formula for $Δ(n,A)$ and some explicit formulas for some special cases. Using this notion we solve the non-intersecting circles problem which asks to evaluate the number of ways to draw $n$ non-intersecting circles in a plane regardless t…
We use the recently developed method of weighted dependency graphs to prove central limit theorems for the number of occurrences of any fixed pattern in multiset permutations and in set partitions. This generalizes results for patterns of size 2 in both settings, obtained by Canfield, Janson and Zeilberger and Chern, Diaconis, Kane and Rhoades, respectively.
A multiset hook length formula for integer partitions is established by using combinatorial manipulation. As special cases, we rederive three hook length formulas, two of them obtained by Nekrasov-Okounkov, the third one by Iqbal, Nazir, Raza and Saleem, who have made use of the cyclic symmetry of the topological vertex. A multiset hook-content formula is also proved.
In this paper, we present, given a odd integer $d$, a decomposition of the multiset of bar lengths of a bar partition $λ$ as the union of two multisets, one consisting of the bar lengths in its $\bar{d}$-core partition $\bar{c}_d(λ)$ and the other consisting of modified bar lengths in its $\bar{d}$-quotient partition. In particular, we obtain that the multiset of bar lengths in $\bar{c}_d(λ)$ is a sub-multiset of the multiset of bar lengths in $λ$. Also we obtain a relative bar formula for the degrees of spin characters of the Schur extensions of the symmetric group. The proof involves a recen…
For positive integers $n$ and $m$, consider a multiset of non-empty subsets of $[m]$ such that there is a \textit{unique} partition of these subsets into $n$ partitions of $[m]$. We study the maximum possible size $g(n,m)$ of such a multiset. We focus on the regime $n \leq 2^{m-1}-1$ and show that $g(n,m) \geq Ω(\frac{nm}{\log_2 n})$. When $n = 2^{cm}$ for any $c \in (0,1)$, this lower bound simplifies to $Ω(\frac{n}{c})$, and we show a matching upper bound $g(n,m) \leq O(\frac{n}{c}\log_2(\frac{1}{c}))$ that is optimal up to a factor of $\log_2(\frac{1}{c})$. We also compute $g(n,m)$ exactly …
The Li--Wan sieve is extended to multisets when the underlying set is symmetric. The main ingredient of the proof is the Mobius inversion formula on the poset of partitions of $\{1,2,\dots,k\}$ ordered by refinement. As illustrative applications, we investigate the problems of partitions over finite fields and zero-sum multisets over the additive group $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$. .
We prove that the multiset {(RightArmLength,LeftArmLength)} ranging over all cells of all Ferrers diagrams with n cells equals the multiset {(RightArmLength,LegLength)} ranging over all cells of all Ferrers diagrams with n cells, thereby refining a multi-set identity proved by C. Bessenrodt and by Bacher and L. Manivel. Added In revised version: Guo-Niu Han kindly pointed out to us that our main result is contained in reference [B.H] of the present article.
For non-negative integers $n$ and $k$ with $n \ge k$, a {\em $k$-minor} of a partition $λ= [λ_1, λ_2, \dots]$ of $n$ is a partition $μ= [μ_1, μ_2, \dots]$ of $n-k$ such that $μ_i \le λ_i$ for all $i$. The multiset $\widehat{M}_k(λ)$ of $k$-minors of $λ$ is defined as the multiset of $k$-minors $μ$ with multiplicity of $μ$ equal to the number of standard Young tableaux of skew shape $λ/ μ$. We show that there exists a function $G(n)$ such that the partitions of $n$ can be reconstructed from their multisets of $k$-minors if and only if $k \le G(n)$. Furthermore, we prove that $\lim_{n \rightarro…
In evolutionary biology, biologists often face the problem of constructing a phylogenetic tree on a set $X$ of species from a multiset $Π$ of partitions corresponding to various attributes of these species. One approach that is used to solve this problem is to try instead to associate a tree (or even a network) to the multiset $Σ_Π$ consisting of all those bipartitions $\{A,X-A\}$ with $A$ a part of some partition in $Π$. The rational behind this approach is that a phylogenetic tree with leaf set $X$ can be uniquely represented by the set of bipartitions of $X$ induced by its edges. Motivated …
We investigate partitioning of integer sequences into heapable subsequences (previously defined and established by Mitzenmacher et al). We show that an extension of patience sorting computes the decomposition into a minimal number of heapable subsequences (MHS). We connect this parameter to an interactive particle system, a multiset extension of Hammersley's process, and investigate its expected value on a random permutation. In contrast with the (well studied) case of the longest increasing subsequence, we bring experimental evidence that the correct asymptotic scaling is $\frac{1+\sqrt{5}}{2…
We introduce the multiset partition algebra $\mathcal{MP}_k(ξ)$ over $F[ξ]$, where $F$ is a field of characteristic $0$ and $k$ is a positive integer. When $ξ$ is specialized to a positive integer $n$, we establish the Schur-Weyl duality between the actions of resulting algebra $\mathcal{MP}_k(n)$ and the symmetric group $S_n$ on $\text{Sym}^k(F^n)$. The construction of $\mathcal{MP}_k(ξ)$ generalizes to any vector $λ$ of non-negative integers yielding the algebra $\mathcal{MP}_λ(ξ)$ over $F[ξ]$ so that there is Schur-Weyl duality between the actions of $\mathcal{MP}_λ(n)$ and $S_n$ on $\text{…
The Hillman--Grassl correspondence is a well-known bijection between multisets of rim hooks of a partition shape $λ$ and reverse plane partitions of $λ$. We use the tools of quiver representations to generalize Hillman--Grassl in type $A$ and to define an analogue in all minuscule types. This is an extended abstract prepared for FPSAC 2019 based on arXiv:1812.08345, emphasizing its combinatorial aspects.
We give combinatorial proofs of two identities from the representation theory of the partition algebra $C A_k(n), n \ge 2k$. The first is $n^k = \sum_λf^λm_k^λ$, where the sum is over partitions $λ$ of $n$, $f^λ$ is the number of standard tableaux of shape $λ$, and $m_k^λ$ is the number of "vacillating tableaux" of shape $λ$ and length $2k$. Our proof uses a combination of Robinson-Schensted-Knuth insertion and jeu de taquin. The second identity is $B(2k) = \sum_λ(m_k^λ)^2$, where $B(2k)$ is the number of set partitions of $\{1, >..., 2k\}$. We show that this insertion restricts to work for th…
We extend the Andrews-Olsson identity to two-colored partitions. Regarding the sets of proper Young walls of quantum affine algebras $\g_n=A^{(2)}_{2n}$, $A^{(2)}_{2n-1}$, $B^{(1)}_{n}$, $D^{(1)}_{n}$ and $D^{(2)}_{n+1}$ as the sets of two-colored partitions, the extended Andrews-Olsson identity implies that the generating functions of the sets of reduced Young walls have very simple formulae: \begin{center} $\prod^{\infty}_{i=1}(1+t^i)^{κ_i}$ where $κ_i=0$, $1$ or $2$, and $κ_i$ varies periodically. \end{center} Moreover, we generalize the Bessenrodt's algorithms to prove the extended Andrews…
The purpose of this note is to give an insertion scheme proof of the formula, $$p_μ= \sum_{λ\vdash k} χ^λ(μ)s_λ,\formula$$ where $p_μ$ is the power sum symmetric function, $s_λ$ is the Schur function and $χ^λ(μ)$ is the irreducible character of the symmetric group $S_k$ indexed by the partition $λ$ and evaluated at a permutation of cycle type $μ=(μ_1,\ldots,μ_\ell)$. The proof of this formula is by direct application of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth insertion scheme and a recent formula of Roichman.
We introduce the notions of Schröder shape and of Schröder tableau, which provide some kind of analogs of the classical notions of Young shape and Young tableau. We investigate some properties of the partial order given by containment of Schröder shapes. Then we propose an algorithm which is the natural analog of the well known RS correspondence for Young tableaux, and we characterize those permutations whose insertion tableaux have some special shapes. The last part of the article relates the notion of Schröder tableau with those of interval order and of weak containment (and strong avoidance…
We study generating functions in the context of Rota-Baxter algebras. We show that exponential generating functions can be naturally viewed in a very special case of complete free commutative Rota-Baxter algebras. This allows us to use free Rota-Baxter algebras to give a broad class of algebraic structures in which generalizations of generating functions can be studied. We generalize the product formula and composition formula for exponential power series. We also give generating functions both for known number families such as Stirling numbers of the second kind and partition numbers, and for…
We introduce the structure of vacillating Hecke tableaux, and establish a one-to-one correspondence between vacillating Hecke tableaux and linked partitions by using the Hecke insertion algorithm developed by Buch, Kresch, Shimozono, Tamvakis and Yong. Linked partitions arise in free probability theory. Motivated by the Hecke insertion algorithm, we define a Hecke diagram as a Young diagram possibly with a marked corner. A vacillating Hecke tableau is defined as a sequence of Hecke diagrams subject to certain addition and deletion of rook strips. The notion of a rook strip was introduced by Bu…
A randomisation of the Berele insertion algorithm is proposed, where the insertion of a letter to a symplectic Young tableau leads to a distribution over the set of symplectic Young tableaux. Berele's algorithm provides a bijection between words from an alphabet and a symplectic Young tableau along with a recording oscillating tableau. The randomised version of the algorithm is achieved by introducing a parameter $0 < q < 1$. The classic Berele algorithm corresponds to letting the parameter $q \to 0$. The new version provides a probabilistic framework that allows to prove Littlewood-type ident…
Say that mu is a ``subpartition'' of an integer partition lambda if the multiset of parts of mu is a submultiset of the parts of lambda, and define an integer partition lambda to be ``wide'' if for every subpartition mu of lambda, mu >= mu' in dominance order (where mu' denotes the conjugate or transpose of mu). Then Brian Taylor and the first author have conjectured that an integer partition lambda is wide if and only if there exists a tableau of shape lambda such that (1) for all i, the entries in the ith row of the tableau are precisely the integers from 1 to lambda_i inclusive, and (2) for…
