We give combinatorial proofs of two identities from the representation theory of the partition algebra $C A_k(n), n \ge 2k$. The first is $n^k = \sum_λf^λm_k^λ$, where the sum is over partitions $λ$ of $n$, $f^λ$ is the number of standard tableaux of shape $λ$, and $m_k^λ$ is the number of "vacillating tableaux" of shape $λ$ and length $2k$. Our proof uses a combination of Robinson-Schensted-Knuth insertion and jeu de taquin. The second identity is $B(2k) = \sum_λ(m_k^λ)^2$, where $B(2k)$ is the number of set partitions of $\{1, >..., 2k\}$. We show that this insertion restricts to work for the diagram algebras which appear as subalgebras of the partition algebra: the Brauer, Temperley-Lieb, planar partition, rook monoid, planar rook monoid, and symmetric group algebras.
Super RSK correspondence is a bijective correspondence between superbiwords and pairs of semistandard supertableaux. Such a bijection was given by Bonetti, Senato and Venezia, via an insertion algorithm closely related to Schensted insertion. Notably, the symmetry property satisfied by the classical RSK bijection holds only in special cases under this bijection. We present a new super RSK bijection, based on the mixed insertion process defined by Haiman, where the symmetry property holds in complete generality.
We introduce analogs of left and right RSK insertion for Schubert calculus of complete flag varieties. The objects being inserted are certain biwords, the insertion objects are bumpless pipe dreams, and the recording objects are decorated chains in Bruhat order. As an application, we adopt Lenart's growth diagrams of permutations to give a combinatorial rule for Schubert structure constants in the separated descent case.
We study asymptotic properties of sequences of partitions ($σ$\nobreakdash-algebras) in spaces with Bernoulli measures associated with the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth correspondence.
For each fully commutative permutation, we construct a "boolean core," which is the maximal boolean permutation in its principal order ideal under the right weak order. We partition the set of fully commutative permutations into the recently defined crowded and uncrowded elements, distinguished by whether or not their RSK insertion tableaux satisfy a sparsity condition. We show that a fully commutative element is uncrowded exactly when it shares the RSK insertion tableau with its boolean core. We present the dynamics of the right weak order on fully commutative permutations, with particular in…
We continue work begun in \cite{ptab} which introduced \emph{perforated tableaux} as a combinatorial model for crystals of type $A_{n-1}$, emphasizing connections to the classical Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) correspondence and Lusztig involutions, and, more generally, exploring the role of insertion schemes in the analysis of crystal graphs. An essential feature of our work is the role of \emph{dual} crystals (\cite{GerberLecouvey,vanLeeuwen}) from which we obtain new results within and beyond the classic RSK theory.
We prove that the values of discrete directed polymer partition functions involving multiple non-intersecting paths remain invariant under replacing the background weights by their images under the geometric RSK correspondence. This result is inspired by a recent and remarkable identity proved by Dauvergne, Orthmann and Virág which is recovered as the zero-temperature, semi-discrete limit of our main result.
R. Sulzgruber's rim hook insertion and the Hillman-Grassl correspondence are two distinct bijections between the reverse plane partitions of a fixed partition shape and multisets of rim-hooks of the same partition shape. It is known that Hillman-Grassl may be equivalently defined using the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence, and we show the analogous result for Sulzgruber's insertion. We refer to our description of Sulzgruber's insertion as diagonal RSK. As a consequence of this equivalence, we show that Sulzgruber's map from multisets of rim hooks to reverse plane partitions can be expre…
Asymptotic representation theory of general linear groups GL(n,q) over a finite field leads to studying probability measures ρon the group U of all infinite uni-uppertriangular matrices over F_q, with the condition that ρis invariant under conjugations by arbitrary infinite matrices. Such probability measures form an infinite-dimensional simplex, and the description of its extreme points (in other words, ergodic measures ρ) was conjectured by Kerov in connection with nonnegative specializations of Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. Vershik and Kerov also conjectured the following Law of Larg…
Iterating the skew RSK correspondence discovered by Sagan and Stanley in the late '80s, we define a deterministic dynamics on the space of pairs of skew Young tableaux $(P,Q)$. We find that this skew RSK dynamics displays conservation laws which, in the picture of Viennot's shadow line construction, identify generalizations of Greene invariants. The introduction of a novel realization of $0$-th Kashiwara operators reveals that the skew RSK dynamics possesses symmetries induced by an affine bicrystal structure, which, combined with connectedness properties of Demazure crystals, leads to its lin…
In [Matveev-Petrov 2016](arXiv:1504.00666) a $q$-deformed Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm ($q$RSK) was introduced. In this article we give reformulations of this algorithm in terms of the Noumi-Yamada description, growth diagrams and local moves. We show that the algorithm is symmetric, namely the output tableaux pairs are swapped in a sense of distribution when the input matrix is transposed. We also formulate a $q$-polymer model based on the $q$RSK, prove the corresponding Burke property, which we use to show a strong law of large numbers for the partition function given stationary bounda…
We extend the Andrews-Olsson identity to two-colored partitions. Regarding the sets of proper Young walls of quantum affine algebras $\g_n=A^{(2)}_{2n}$, $A^{(2)}_{2n-1}$, $B^{(1)}_{n}$, $D^{(1)}_{n}$ and $D^{(2)}_{n+1}$ as the sets of two-colored partitions, the extended Andrews-Olsson identity implies that the generating functions of the sets of reduced Young walls have very simple formulae: \begin{center} $\prod^{\infty}_{i=1}(1+t^i)^{κ_i}$ where $κ_i=0$, $1$ or $2$, and $κ_i$ varies periodically. \end{center} Moreover, we generalize the Bessenrodt's algorithms to prove the extended Andrews…
The purpose of this note is to give an insertion scheme proof of the formula, $$p_μ= \sum_{λ\vdash k} χ^λ(μ)s_λ,\formula$$ where $p_μ$ is the power sum symmetric function, $s_λ$ is the Schur function and $χ^λ(μ)$ is the irreducible character of the symmetric group $S_k$ indexed by the partition $λ$ and evaluated at a permutation of cycle type $μ=(μ_1,\ldots,μ_\ell)$. The proof of this formula is by direct application of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth insertion scheme and a recent formula of Roichman.
We generalize the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm to the insertion of two row arrays of multisets. This generalization leads to new enumerative results that have representation theoretic interpretations as decompositions of centralizer algebras and the spaces they act on. In addition, restrictions on the multisets lead to further identities and representation theory analogues. For instance, we obtain a bijection between words of length $k$ with entries in $[n]$ and pairs of tableaux of the same shape with one being a standard Young tableau of size $n$ and the other being a standard multiset…
A randomisation of the Berele insertion algorithm is proposed, where the insertion of a letter to a symplectic Young tableau leads to a distribution over the set of symplectic Young tableaux. Berele's algorithm provides a bijection between words from an alphabet and a symplectic Young tableau along with a recording oscillating tableau. The randomised version of the algorithm is achieved by introducing a parameter $0 < q < 1$. The classic Berele algorithm corresponds to letting the parameter $q \to 0$. The new version provides a probabilistic framework that allows to prove Littlewood-type ident…
We give a positive combinatorial formula for the Kronecker coefficient g_{lambda mu(d) nu} for any partitions lambda, nu of n and hook shape mu(d) := (n-d,1^d). Our main tool is Haiman's \emph{mixed insertion}. This is a generalization of Schensted insertion to \emph{colored words}, words in the alphabet of barred letters \bar{1},\bar{2},... and unbarred letters 1,2,.... We define the set of \emph{colored Yamanouchi tableaux of content lambda and total color d} (CYT_{lambda, d}) to be the set of mixed insertion tableaux of colored words w with exactly d barred letters and such that w^{blft} is…
The Alladi-Gordon identity plays an important role for the Alladi-Gordon generalization of Schur's partition theorem. By using Joichi-Stanton's insertion algorithm, we present an overpartition interpretation for the Alladi-Gordon key identity. Based on this interpretation, we further obtain a combinatorial proof of the Alladi-Gordon key identity by establishing an involution on the underlying set of overpartitions.
The set of orbits of $GL(V)$ in $Fl(V)\times Fl(V)\times V$ is finite, and is parametrized by the set of certain decorated permutations in a work of Solomon. We describe a Mirabolic RSK correspondence (bijective) between this set of decorated permutations and the set of triples: a pair of standard Young tableaux, and an extra partition. It gives rise to a partition of the set of orbits into combinatorial cells. We prove that the same partition is given by the type of a general conormal vector to an orbit. We conjecture that the same partition is given by the bimodule Kazhdan-Lusztig cells in t…
We consider two examples of a fully decodable combinatorial encoding of Bernoulli schemes: the encoding via Weyl simplices and the much more complicated encoding via the RSK (Robinson--Schensted--Knuth) correspondence. In the first case, the decodability is a quite simple fact, while in the second case, this is a nontrivial result obtained by D.~Romik and P.~Śniady and based on the papers~ \cite{KV}, \cite{VK}, and others. We comment on the proofs from the viewpoint of the theory of measurable partitions; another proof, using representation theory and generalized Schur--Weyl duality, will be p…
We prove that the number of 01-fillings of a given stack polyomino (a polyomino with justified rows whose lengths form a unimodal sequence) with at most one 1 per column which do not contain a fixed-size northeast chain and a fixed-size southeast chain, depends only on the set of row lengths of the polyomino. The proof is via a bijection between fillings of stack polyominoes which differ only in the position of one row and uses the Hecke insertion algorithm by Buch, Kresch, Shimozono, Tamvakis, and Yong and the jeu de taquin for increasing tableaux of Thomas and Yong. Moreover, our bijection g…
A new algorithm for inserting rim-hooks into reverse plane partitions is presented. The insertion is used to define a bijection between reverse plane partitions of a fixed shape and multi-sets of rim-hooks. In turn this yields a bijective proof of the fact that the generating function for reverse plane partitions of a fixed shape, which was first obtained by R. Stanley, factors into a product featuring the hook-lengths of this shape. Our bijection turns out to be equivalent to a map defined by I. Pak by different means, and can be related to the Hillman-Grassl correspondence and the Robinson-S…
We introduce the structure of vacillating Hecke tableaux, and establish a one-to-one correspondence between vacillating Hecke tableaux and linked partitions by using the Hecke insertion algorithm developed by Buch, Kresch, Shimozono, Tamvakis and Yong. Linked partitions arise in free probability theory. Motivated by the Hecke insertion algorithm, we define a Hecke diagram as a Young diagram possibly with a marked corner. A vacillating Hecke tableau is defined as a sequence of Hecke diagrams subject to certain addition and deletion of rook strips. The notion of a rook strip was introduced by Bu…
We introduce the multiset partition algebra $\mathcal{MP}_k(ξ)$ over $F[ξ]$, where $F$ is a field of characteristic $0$ and $k$ is a positive integer. When $ξ$ is specialized to a positive integer $n$, we establish the Schur-Weyl duality between the actions of resulting algebra $\mathcal{MP}_k(n)$ and the symmetric group $S_n$ on $\text{Sym}^k(F^n)$. The construction of $\mathcal{MP}_k(ξ)$ generalizes to any vector $λ$ of non-negative integers yielding the algebra $\mathcal{MP}_λ(ξ)$ over $F[ξ]$ so that there is Schur-Weyl duality between the actions of $\mathcal{MP}_λ(n)$ and $S_n$ on $\text{…
We introduce the notions of Schröder shape and of Schröder tableau, which provide some kind of analogs of the classical notions of Young shape and Young tableau. We investigate some properties of the partial order given by containment of Schröder shapes. Then we propose an algorithm which is the natural analog of the well known RS correspondence for Young tableaux, and we characterize those permutations whose insertion tableaux have some special shapes. The last part of the article relates the notion of Schröder tableau with those of interval order and of weak containment (and strong avoidance…
The conjugacy classes of nilpotent $n\times n$ matrices can be parametrised by partitions $λ$ of $n$, and for a nilpotent $η$ in the class parametrised by $λ$, the variety $F_η$ of $η$-stable flags has its irreducible components parametrised by the standard Young tableaux of shape $λ$. We indicate how several algorithmic constructions defined for Young tableaux have significance in this context, thus extending Steinberg's result that the relative position of flags generically chosen in the irreducible components of $F_η$ parametrised by tableaux $P$ and $Q$, is the permutation associated to $(…
