The Toda chain is the prime example of a classical integrable system with strictly local conservation laws. Relying on the Dumitriu-Edelman matrix model, we obtain the generalized free energy of the Toda chain and thereby establish a mapping to the one-dimensional log-gas with an interaction strength of order 1/N. The (deterministic) local density of states of the Lax matrix is identified as the object, which should evolve according to generalized hydrodynamics. In the current version missing factors of 2 are corrected.
Considered is a generalized Gibbs ensemble of the classical Toda lattice. We establish that the collision rate ansatz follows from (i) the charge-current susceptibility matrix is symmetric and (ii) the stretch current is proportional to the momentum, hence conserved.
After reviewing some fundamental results derived from the introduction of the generalized Gibbs canonical ensemble, such as the called thermodynamic uncertainty relation, it is described a physical scenario where such a generalized ensemble naturally appears as a consequence of a modification of the energetic interchange mechanism between the interest system and its surrounding, which could be relevant within the framework of long-range interacting systems.
We study the large time dynamics of a macroscopically large quantum systems under a sudden quench. We show that, first of all, for a generic system in the thermodynamic limit the Gibbs distribution correctly captures the large time dynamics of its global observables. In contrast, for an integrable system, the generalized Gibbs ensemble captures its global large time dynamics only if the system can be thought of as a number of noninteracting uncorrelated fermionic degrees of freedom. The conditions for the generalized Gibbs ensemble to capture the large time dynamics of local quantities are lik…
The generalized Gibbs ensemble has been shown to be relevant in the relaxation of a completely integrable system subject to a quantum quench, in the sense that it accurately predicts the steady values of some physical variables. We proceed to further question its relevance by giving the quenched system a second quench. The concern is whether the generalized Gibbs ensemble can also accurately predict the relaxed system's response to the second quench. Two case studies with the transverse Ising model and the hard-core bosons in one dimension yield an affirmative answer. The relevance of the gene…
We reconsider the Boltzmann-Gibbs statistical ensemble in thermodynamics using the multinomial coefficient approach. We show that an ensemble is defined by the determination of four statistical quantities, the element probabilities $p_i$, the configuration probabilities $P_j$, the entropy $S$ and the extremum constraints (EC). This distinction is of central importance for the understanding of the conditions under which a microcanonical, canonical and macrocanonical ensemble is defined. These three ensembles are characterized by the conservation of their sizes. A variation of the ensemble size …
In this work, we investigate the heat exchange between two quantum systems whose initial equilibrium states are described by the generalized Gibbs ensemble. First, we generalize the fluctuation relations for heat exchange discovered by Jarzynski and Wójcik to quantum systems prepared in the equilibrium states described by the generalized Gibbs ensemble at different generalized temperatures. Second, we extend the connections between heat exchange and Rényi divergences to quantum systems with very general initial conditions. These relations are applicable for quantum systems with conserved quanti…
The local physical properties of an isolated quantum statistical system in the stationary state reached long after a quench are generically described by the Gibbs ensemble, which involves only its Hamiltonian and the temperature as a parameter. If the system is instead integrable, additional quantities conserved by the dynamics intervene in the description of the stationary state. The resulting generalized Gibbs ensemble involves a number of temperature-like parameters, the determination of which is practically difficult. Here we argue that in a number of simple models these parameters can be …
We develop a consistent stochastic thermodynamics for environments composed of thermodynamic reservoirs in an external conservative force field, that is environments described by the Generalized or Gibbs canonical ensemble. We demonstrate that small systems weakly coupled to such reservoirs exchange both heat and work by verifying a local detailed balance relation for the induced stochastic dynamics. Based on this analysis, we help to rationalize the observation that nonthermal reservoirs can increase the efficiency of thermodynamic heat engines.
The Gibbs entropy of a microcanonical network ensemble is the logarithm of the number of network configurations compatible with a set of hard constraints. This quantity characterizes the level of order and randomness encoded in features of a given real network. Here we show how to relate this entropy to large deviations of conjugated canonical ensembles. We derive exact expression for this correspondence using the cavity methods for some hard constraints.
We present a path integral Monte Carlo method which is the full quantum analogue of the Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo method of Panagiotopoulos to study the gas-liquid coexistence line of a classical fluid. Unlike previous extensions of Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo to include quantum effects, our scheme is viable even for systems with strong quantum delocalization in the degenerate regime of temperature. This is demonstrated by an illustrative application to the gas-superfluid transition of $^4$He in two dimensions.
We reconsider the non-equilibrium dynamics of closed quantum systems. In particular we focus on the thermalization of integrable systems. Here we show how the generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE) can be constructed as the best approximation to the time dependent density matrix. Our procedure allows for a systematic construction of the GGE by a constrained minimization of the distance between the latter and the true state. Moreover, we show that the entropy of the GGE is a direct measure for the quality of the approximation. We apply our method to a quenched hard core bose gas. In contrast to the s…
Generalized Gibbs ensembles have been used as powerful tools to describe the steady state of integrable many-particle quantum systems after a sudden change of the Hamiltonian. Here we demonstrate numerically, that they can be used for a much broader class of problems. We consider integrable systems in the presence of weak perturbations which both break integrability and drive the system to a state far from equilibrium. Under these conditions, we show that the steady state and the time-evolution on long time-scales can be accurately described by a (truncated) generalized Gibbs ensemble with tim…
Using a numerical renormalization group based on exploiting an underlying exactly solvable non- relativistic theory, we study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of a 1D Bose gas (as described by the Lieb-Liniger model) released from a parabolic trap. Our method allows us to track the post-quench dynamics of the gas all the way to infinite time. We also exhibit a general construction, applicable to all integrable models, of the thermodynamic ensemble that has been suggested to govern this dynamics, the generalized Gibbs ensemble. We compare the predictions of equilibration from this ensemble again…
We derive fluctuation relations for a many-body quantum system prepared in a Generalised Gibbs Ensemble subject to a general nonequilibrium protocol. By considering isolated integrable systems, we find generalisations to the Tasaki-Crooks and Jarzynski relations. Our approach is illustrated by studying the one-dimensional quantum Ising model subject to a sudden change in the transverse field, where we find that the statistics of the work done and irreversible entropy show signatures of quantum criticality. We discuss these fluctuation relations in the context of thermalisation.
The symmetrical restricted Gibbs ensemble (RGE) is a version of the Gibbs ensemble in which particles are exchanged between two boxes of fixed equal volumes. It has recently come to prominence because -- when combined with specialized algorithms -- it provides for the study of near-coexistence density fluctuations in highly size-asymmetric binary mixtures. Hitherto, however, a detailed framework for extracting accurate estimates of critical point and coexistence curve parameters from RGE density fluctuations has been lacking. Here we address this problem by exploiting an exact link between the…
We investigate the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of the one-dimensional quantum Ising model after a sudden quench of the transverse magnetic field. While for a translationally invariant system the statistical description of the asymptotic order parameter correlations after the quench can be performed in terms of the generalized Gibbs ensemble, we show that a breaking of translational invariance, e.g., by perturbing the boundary conditions, disrupts its validity. This effect, which of course vanishes in the thermodynamic limit, is shown to be very important in the presence of disorder.
The 2016 Snook Prize has been awarded to Diego Tapias, Alessandro Bravetti, and David Sanders for their paper -- Ergodicity of One-Dimensional Systems Coupled to the Logistic Thermostat. They introduced a relatively stiff hyperbolic tangent thermostat force and successfully tested its ability to reproduce Gibbs' canonical distribution for the harmonic oscillator, the quartic oscillator, and the Mexican Hat potentials. Their work constitutes an effective response to the 2016 Ian Snook Prize Award goal -- Finding ergodic algorithms for Gibbs' canonical ensemble using a single thermostat variable…
A statistical treatment of finite unbound systems in the presence of collective motions is presented and applied to a classical Lennard-Jones Hamiltonian, numerically simulated through molecular dynamics. In the ideal gas limit, the flow dynamics can be exactly re-casted into effective time-dependent Lagrange parameters acting on a standard Gibbs ensemble with an extra total energy conservation constraint. Using this same ansatz for the low density freeze-out configurations of an interacting expanding system, we show that the presence of flow can have a sizeable effect on the microstate distri…
Integrable quantum many-body systems are considered to equilibrate to generalized Gibbs ensembles (GGEs) characterized by the expectation values of integrals of motion. We study the dynamics of exactly solvable quadratic bosonic systems in the thermodynamic limit, and show a general mechanism for the relaxation to GGEs, in terms of the diagonal singularity. We show analytically and explicitly that a free bosonic system relaxes from a general (not necessarily Gaussian) initial state under certain physical conditions to a Gaussian GGE. We also show the relaxation to a Gaussian GGE in an exactly …
We establish a relation between two hallmarks of integrable systems: the relaxation towards the generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE) and the dissipationless charge transport. We show that the former one is possible only if the so called Mazur bound on the charge stiffness is saturated by local conserved quantities. As an example we show how a non--GGE steady state with a current can be generated in the one-dimensional model of interacting spinless fermions with a flux quench. Moreover an extended GGE involving the quasi-local conserved quantities can be formulated for this case.
The Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis implies that for a thermodynamically large system in one of its eigenstates, the reduced density matrix describing any finite subsystem is determined solely by a set of {\it relevant} conserved quantities. In a generic system, only the energy plays that role and hence eigenstates appear locally thermal. Integrable systems, on the other hand, possess an extensive number of such conserved quantities and hence the reduced density matrix requires specification of an infinite number of parameters (Generalized Gibbs Ensemble). However, here we show by unbiase…
We consider the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE) in the context of global quantum quenches in XXZ Heisenberg spin chains. Embedding the GGE into the Quantum Transfer Matrix formalism we develop an iterative procedure to fix the Lagrange-multipliers and to calculate predictions for the long-time limit of short-range correlators. The main idea is to consider truncated GGE's with only a finite number of charges and to investigate the convergence of the numerical results as the truncation level is increased. As an example we consider a quantum quench situation where the system is initially prepare…
We discuss the implementation of two different truncated Generalized Gibbs Ensembles (GGE) describing the stationary state after a mass quench process in the Ising Field Theory. One truncated GGE is based on the semi-local charges of the model, the other on regularized versions of its ultra-local charges. We test the efficiency of the two different ensembles by comparing their predictions for the stationary state values of the single-particle Green's function $G(x) = \langle ψ^{\dagger}(x) ψ(0) \rangle$ of the complex fermion field $ψ(x)$. We find that both truncated GGEs are able to recover $…
The thermodynamic Bethe ansatz approach to the study of integrable quantum field theories was introduced in the early 90s. Since then it has been known that the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations can be recast in the form of $Y$-systems. These $Y$-systems have a number of interesting properties, notably in the high-temperature limit their solutions are constants from which the central charge of the ultraviolet fixed point can be obtained and they are typically periodic functions, with period proportional to the dimension of the perturbing field. In this letter we discuss the derivation of $Y…
We build and analytically calculate the Generalised Gibbs Ensemble partition function of the integrable Soft Neumann Model. This is the model of a classical particle which is constrained to move, on average over the initial conditions, on an $N$ dimensional sphere, and feels the effect of anisotropic harmonic potentials. We derive all relevant averaged static observables in the (thermodynamic) $N\rightarrow\infty$ limit. We compare them to their long-term dynamic averages finding excellent agreement in all phases of a non-trivial phase diagram determined by the characteristics of the initial c…
We study a classical integrable (Neumann) model describing the motion of a particle on the sphere, subject to harmonic forces. We tackle the problem in the infinite dimensional limit by introducing a soft version in which the spherical constraint is imposed only on average over initial conditions. We show that the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble captures the long-time averages of the soft model. We reveal the full dynamic phase diagram with extended, quasi-condensed, coordinate-, and coordinate and momentum-condensed phases. The scaling properties of the fluctuations allow us to establish in which …
We numerically study the unitary time evolution of a nonintegrable model of hard-core bosons with an extensive number of local Z2 symmetries. We find that the expectation values of local observables in the stationary state are described better by the generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE) than by the canonical ensemble. We also find that the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis fails for the entire spectrum, but holds true within each symmetry sector, which justifies the GGE. In contrast, if the model has only one global Z2 symmetry or a size-independent number of local Z2 symmetries, we find that t…
We study quenches in integrable spin-1/2 chains in which we evolve the ground state of the antiferromagnetic Ising model with the anisotropic Heisenberg Hamiltonian. For this nontrivially interacting situation, an application of the first-principles-based quench action method allows us to give an exact description of the postquench steady state in the thermodynamic limit. We show that a generalized Gibbs ensemble, implemented using all known local conserved charges, fails to reproduce the exact quench action steady state and to correctly predict postquench equilibrium expectation values of phy…
Within the emergent eigenstate solution to quantum dynamics [Phys. Rev. X 7, 021012 (2017)], one can construct a local operator (an emergent Hamiltonian) of which the time-evolving state is an eigenstate. Here we show that such a solution exists for the expansion dynamics of Tonks-Girardeau gases in optical lattices after turning off power-law (e.g., harmonic or quartic) confining potentials, which are geometric quenches that do not involve the boost operator. For systems that are initially in the ground state and undergo dynamical fermionization during the expansion, we show that they remain …
For a harmonic oscillator, Nosé's single-thermostat approach to simulating Gibbs' canonical ensemble with dynamics samples only a small fraction of the phase space. Nosé's approach has been improved in a series of three steps: [ 1 ] several two-thermostat sets of motion equations have been found which cover the complete phase space in an ergodic fashion, [ 2 ] sets of single-thermostat motion equations, exerting "weak control" over both forces and momenta, have been shown to be ergodic, and [ 3 ] sets of single-thermostat motion equations exerting weak control over two velocity moments provide…
In this work, we show that the dissipation in a many-body system under an arbitrary non-equilibrium process is related to the Rényi divergences between two states along the forward and reversed dynamics under very general family of initial conditions. This relation generalizes the links between dissipated work and Renyi divergences to quantum systems with conserved quantities whose equilibrium state is described by the generalized Gibbs ensemble. The relation is applicable for quantum systems with conserved quantities and can be applied to protocols driving the system between integrable and ch…
A new class of Random Matrix Ensembles is introduced. The Gaussian orthogonal, unitary, and symplectic ensembles GOE, GUE, and GSE, of random matrices are analogous to the classical Gibbs ensemble governed by Boltzmann's distribution in the coordinate space. The proposed new class of Random Matrix ensembles is an extension of the above Gaussian ensembles and it is analogous to the canonical Gibbs ensemble governed by Maxwell-Boltzmann's distribution in phase space. The thermodynamical magnitudes of partition function, intrinsic energy, free energy of Helmholtz, free energy of Gibbs, enthalpy, …
We prove two statements about the long time dynamics of integrable Hamiltonian systems. In classical mechanics, we prove the microcanonical version of the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE) by mapping it to a known theorem and then extend it to the limit of infinite number of degrees of freedom. In quantum mechanics, we prove GGE for maximal Hamiltonians - a class of models stemming from a rigorous notion of quantum integrability understood as the existence of conserved charges with prescribed dependence on a system parameter, e.g. Hubbard U, anisotropy in the XXZ model etc. In analogy with clas…
We consider the non-equilibrium dynamics in isolated systems, described by quantum field theories (QFTs). After being prepared in a density matrix that is not an eigenstate of the Hamiltonian, such systems are expected to relax locally to a stationary state. In a presence of local conservation laws, these stationary states are believed to be described by appropriate generalized Gibbs ensembles. Here we demonstrate that in order to obtain a correct description of the stationary state, it is necessary to take into account conservation laws that are not (ultra-)local in the usual sense of QFT, bu…
We derive relativistic hydrodynamics from quantum field theories by assuming that the density operator is given by a local Gibbs distribution at initial time. We decompose the energy-momentum tensor and particle current into nondissipative and dissipative parts, and analyze their time evolution in detail. Performing the path-integral formulation of the local Gibbs distribution, we microscopically derive the generating functional for the nondissipative hydrodynamics. We also construct a basis to study dissipative corrections. In particular, we derive the first-order dissipative hydrodynamic equa…
We study the nonequilibrium time evolution of the spin-1/2 anisotropic Heisenberg (XXZ) spin chain, with a choice of dimer product and Neel states as initial states. We investigate numerically various short-ranged spin correlators in the long-time limit and find that they deviate significantly from predictions based on the generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE) hypotheses. By computing the asymptotic spin correlators within the recently proposed quench-action formalism [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 257203 (2013)], however, we find excellent agreement with the numerical data. We, therefore, conclude that th…
An information theory description of finite systems explicitly evolving in time is presented for classical as well as quantum mechanics. We impose a variational principle on the Shannon entropy at a given time while the constraints are set at a former time. The resulting density matrix deviates from the Boltzmann kernel and contains explicit time odd components which can be interpreted as collective flows. Applications include quantum brownian motion, linear response theory, out of equilibrium situations for which the relevant information is collected within different time scales before entrop…
Fluid phase behavior of charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions is explored by applying a new variant of the Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo simulation method to a coarse-grained one-component model with implicit microions and solvent. The simulations take as input linear-response approximations for effective electrostatic interactions -- hard-sphere-Yukawa pair potential and one-body volume energy. The conventional Gibbs ensemble trial moves are supplemented by exchange of (implicit) salt between coexisting phases, with acceptance probabilities influenced by the state dependence of the effective i…
The generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE), which involves multiple conserved quantities other than the Hamiltonian, has served as the statistical-mechanical description of the long-time behavior for several isolated integrable quantum systems. The GGE may involve a noncommutative set of conserved quantities in view of the maximum entropy principle, and show that the GGE thus generalized (noncommutative GGE, NCGGE) gives a more qualitatively accurate description of the long-time behaviors than that of the conventional GGE. Providing a clear understanding of why the (NC)GGE well describes the long-ti…
The non-equilibrium steady states of integrable models are believed to be described by the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE), which involves all local and quasi-local conserved charges of the model. In this work we investigate integrable lattice models solvable by the nested Bethe Ansatz, with group symmetry $SU(N)$, $N\ge 3$. In these models the Bethe Ansatz involves various types of Bethe rapidities corresponding to the "nesting" procedure, describing the internal degrees of freedom for the excitations. We show that a complete set of charges for the GGE can be obtained from the known fusion h…
We discuss partition function of 2d CFTs decorated by higher qKdV charges in the thermodynamic limit when the size of the spatial circle goes to infinity. In this limit the saddle point approximation is exact and at infinite central charge generalized partition function can be calculated explicitly. We show that leading 1/c corrections to free energy can be reformulated as a sum over Young tableaux which we calculate for the first two qKdV charges. Next, we compare generalized ensemble with the "eigenstate ensemble" that consists of a single primary state. At infinite central charge the ensemb…
Following our previous work [PRL 113 (2014) 09020] we present here a detailed comparison of the quench action approach and the predictions of the generalized Gibbs ensemble, with the result that while the quench action formalism correctly captures the steady state, the GGE does not give a correct description of local short-distance correlation functions. We extend our studies to include another initial state, the so-called q-dimer state. We present important details of our construction, including new results concerning exact overlaps for the dimer and q-dimer states, and we also give an exact …
The connection between the non-equilibrium dynamics of isolated quantum many-body systems and statistical mechanics is a fundamental open question. It is generally believed that the unitary quantum evolution of a sufficiently complex system leads to an apparent maximum-entropy state that can be described by thermodynamical ensembles. However, conventional ensembles fail to describe the large class of systems that exhibit non-trivial conserved quantities. Instead, generalized ensembles have been predicted to maximize entropy in these systems. In our experiments we explicitly show that a degener…
We investigate work extraction from integrable quantum systems under unitary operations. As a model system, we consider non-interacting fermions in one dimension. Thanks to its integrability, this system does not thermalize after a perturbation, even though it does reach a steady state which can be described by a Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE). Such a GGE has an excess free energy compared to a thermal state and we propose to extract this energy by applying Bragg pulses. We show how all the available work in the GGE can be extracted in the adiabatic limit while some excess energy is left at …
We derived the equation of the density operator for generalized entropy and generalized expectation value with quantum analysis when conserved quantities exist. The derived equation is simplified when the conventional expectation value is employed. The derived equation is also simplified when the commutation relations, $[\hatρ, \hat{H}]$ and $[\hatρ, \hat{Q}^{[a]}]$, are the functions of the density operator $\hatρ$, where $\hat{H}$ is the Hamiltonian, and $\hat{Q}^{[a]}$ is the conserved quantity. We derived the density operators for the von Neumann entropy, the Tsallis entropy, and the Rényi…
We revisit the question of whether and how the steady states arising after non-equilibrium time evolution in integrable models (and in particular in the XXZ spin chain) can be described by the so-called Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE). It is known that the micro-canonical ensemble built on a complete set of charges correctly describes the long-time limit of local observables, and recently a canonical ensemble was built by Ilievski et. al. using particle occupation number operators. Here we provide an alternative construction by considering truncated GGE's (tGGE's) that only include a finite n…
Recently, it was understood that modified concepts of locality played an important role in the study of extended quantum systems out of equilibrium, in particular in so-called generalized Gibbs ensembles. In this paper, we rigorously study pseudolocal charges and their involvement in time evolutions and in the thermalization process of arbitrary states with strong enough clustering properties. We show that the densities of pseudolocal charges form a Hilbert space, with inner product determined by thermodynamic susceptibilities. Using this, we define the family of pseudolocal states, which are …
We study work extraction (defined as the difference between the initial and the final energy) in noninteracting and (effectively) weakly interacting isolated fermionic quantum lattice systems in one dimension, which undergo a sequence of quenches and equilibration. The systems are divided in two parts, which we identify as the subsystem of interest and the bath. We extract work by quenching the on-site potentials in the subsystem, letting the entire system equilibrate, and returning to the initial parameters in the subsystem using a quasi-static process (the bath is never acted upon). We selec…
We consider quantum quenches in the so-called $q$-boson lattice model. We argue that the Generalized Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis holds in this model, therefore the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE) gives a valid description of the stationary states in the long time limit. For a special class of initial states (which are the pure Fock states in the local basis) we are able to provide the GGE predictions for the resulting root densities. We also give predictions for the long-time limit of certain local operators. In the $q\to\infty$ limit the calculations simplify considerably, the wave …
