The generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE), which involves multiple conserved quantities other than the Hamiltonian, has served as the statistical-mechanical description of the long-time behavior for several isolated integrable quantum systems. The GGE may involve a noncommutative set of conserved quantities in view of the maximum entropy principle, and show that the GGE thus generalized (noncommutative GGE, NCGGE) gives a more qualitatively accurate description of the long-time behaviors than that of the conventional GGE. Providing a clear understanding of why the (NC)GGE well describes the long-time behaviors, we construct, for noninteracting models, the exact NCGGE that describes the long-time behaviors without an error even at finite system size. It is noteworthy that the NCGGE involves nonlocal conserved quantities, which can be necessary for describing long-time behaviors of local observables. We also give some extensions of the NCGGE and demonstrate how accurately they describe the long-time behaviors of few-body observables.
We study a classical integrable (Neumann) model describing the motion of a particle on the sphere, subject to harmonic forces. We tackle the problem in the infinite dimensional limit by introducing a soft version in which the spherical constraint is imposed only on average over initial conditions. We show that the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble captures the long-time averages of the soft model. We reveal the full dynamic phase diagram with extended, quasi-condensed, coordinate-, and coordinate and momentum-condensed phases. The scaling properties of the fluctuations allow us to establish in which …
We derive fluctuation relations for a many-body quantum system prepared in a Generalised Gibbs Ensemble subject to a general nonequilibrium protocol. By considering isolated integrable systems, we find generalisations to the Tasaki-Crooks and Jarzynski relations. Our approach is illustrated by studying the one-dimensional quantum Ising model subject to a sudden change in the transverse field, where we find that the statistics of the work done and irreversible entropy show signatures of quantum criticality. We discuss these fluctuation relations in the context of thermalisation.
The thermodynamic Bethe ansatz approach to the study of integrable quantum field theories was introduced in the early 90s. Since then it has been known that the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations can be recast in the form of $Y$-systems. These $Y$-systems have a number of interesting properties, notably in the high-temperature limit their solutions are constants from which the central charge of the ultraviolet fixed point can be obtained and they are typically periodic functions, with period proportional to the dimension of the perturbing field. In this letter we discuss the derivation of $Y…
We prove two statements about the long time dynamics of integrable Hamiltonian systems. In classical mechanics, we prove the microcanonical version of the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE) by mapping it to a known theorem and then extend it to the limit of infinite number of degrees of freedom. In quantum mechanics, we prove GGE for maximal Hamiltonians - a class of models stemming from a rigorous notion of quantum integrability understood as the existence of conserved charges with prescribed dependence on a system parameter, e.g. Hubbard U, anisotropy in the XXZ model etc. In analogy with clas…
The Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis implies that for a thermodynamically large system in one of its eigenstates, the reduced density matrix describing any finite subsystem is determined solely by a set of {\it relevant} conserved quantities. In a generic system, only the energy plays that role and hence eigenstates appear locally thermal. Integrable systems, on the other hand, possess an extensive number of such conserved quantities and hence the reduced density matrix requires specification of an infinite number of parameters (Generalized Gibbs Ensemble). However, here we show by unbiase…
We study the large time dynamics of a macroscopically large quantum systems under a sudden quench. We show that, first of all, for a generic system in the thermodynamic limit the Gibbs distribution correctly captures the large time dynamics of its global observables. In contrast, for an integrable system, the generalized Gibbs ensemble captures its global large time dynamics only if the system can be thought of as a number of noninteracting uncorrelated fermionic degrees of freedom. The conditions for the generalized Gibbs ensemble to capture the large time dynamics of local quantities are lik…
The generalized Gibbs ensemble has been shown to be relevant in the relaxation of a completely integrable system subject to a quantum quench, in the sense that it accurately predicts the steady values of some physical variables. We proceed to further question its relevance by giving the quenched system a second quench. The concern is whether the generalized Gibbs ensemble can also accurately predict the relaxed system's response to the second quench. Two case studies with the transverse Ising model and the hard-core bosons in one dimension yield an affirmative answer. The relevance of the gene…
The local physical properties of an isolated quantum statistical system in the stationary state reached long after a quench are generically described by the Gibbs ensemble, which involves only its Hamiltonian and the temperature as a parameter. If the system is instead integrable, additional quantities conserved by the dynamics intervene in the description of the stationary state. The resulting generalized Gibbs ensemble involves a number of temperature-like parameters, the determination of which is practically difficult. Here we argue that in a number of simple models these parameters can be …
Integrable quantum many-body systems are considered to equilibrate to generalized Gibbs ensembles (GGEs) characterized by the expectation values of integrals of motion. We study the dynamics of exactly solvable quadratic bosonic systems in the thermodynamic limit, and show a general mechanism for the relaxation to GGEs, in terms of the diagonal singularity. We show analytically and explicitly that a free bosonic system relaxes from a general (not necessarily Gaussian) initial state under certain physical conditions to a Gaussian GGE. We also show the relaxation to a Gaussian GGE in an exactly …
We investigate equilibration and generalized thermalization of the quantum Harmonic chain under local quantum quench. The quench action we consider is connecting two disjoint harmonic chains of different sizes and the system jumps between two integrable settings. We verify the validity of the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble description for this infinite dimensional Hilbert space system and also identify equilibration between the subsystems as in classical systems. Using Bogoliubov transformations, we show that the eigenstates of the system prior to the quench evolve towards the Gibbs Generalized En…
We study the Hamiltonian dynamics of the spherical spin model with fully-connected two-body interactions drawn from a Gaussian probability distribution. In the statistical physics framework, the potential energy is of the so-called $p=2$ spherical disordered kind. Most importantly for our setting, the energy conserving dynamics are equivalent to the ones of the Neumann integrable system. We take initial conditions in thermal equilibrium and we subsequently evolve the configurations with Newton dynamics dictated by a different Hamiltonian. We identify three dynamical phases depending on the par…
Generalized Gibbs ensembles have been used as powerful tools to describe the steady state of integrable many-particle quantum systems after a sudden change of the Hamiltonian. Here we demonstrate numerically, that they can be used for a much broader class of problems. We consider integrable systems in the presence of weak perturbations which both break integrability and drive the system to a state far from equilibrium. Under these conditions, we show that the steady state and the time-evolution on long time-scales can be accurately described by a (truncated) generalized Gibbs ensemble with tim…
We study the propagation of entanglement after quantum quenches in the non-integrable para-magnetic quantum Ising spin chain. Tuning the parameters of the system, we observe a sudden increase in the entanglement production rate, which we show to be related to the appearance of new quasi-particle excitations in the post-quench spectrum. We argue that the phenomenon is the non-equilibrium version of the well-known Gibbs paradox related to mixing entropy and demonstrate that its characteristics fit the expectations derived from the quantum resolution of the paradox in systems with a non-trivial q…
The non-equilibrium steady states of integrable models are believed to be described by the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE), which involves all local and quasi-local conserved charges of the model. In this work we investigate integrable lattice models solvable by the nested Bethe Ansatz, with group symmetry $SU(N)$, $N\ge 3$. In these models the Bethe Ansatz involves various types of Bethe rapidities corresponding to the "nesting" procedure, describing the internal degrees of freedom for the excitations. We show that a complete set of charges for the GGE can be obtained from the known fusion h…
We build and analytically calculate the Generalised Gibbs Ensemble partition function of the integrable Soft Neumann Model. This is the model of a classical particle which is constrained to move, on average over the initial conditions, on an $N$ dimensional sphere, and feels the effect of anisotropic harmonic potentials. We derive all relevant averaged static observables in the (thermodynamic) $N\rightarrow\infty$ limit. We compare them to their long-term dynamic averages finding excellent agreement in all phases of a non-trivial phase diagram determined by the characteristics of the initial c…
The generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE) was introduced ten years ago to describe observables in isolated integrable quantum systems after equilibration. Since then, the GGE has been demonstrated to be a powerful tool to predict the outcome of the relaxation dynamics of few-body observables in a variety of integrable models, a process we call generalized thermalization. This review discusses several fundamental aspects of the GGE and generalized thermalization in integrable systems. In particular, we focus on questions such as: which observables equilibrate to the GGE predictions and who should pl…
It has been recently observed for a particular quantum quench in the XXZ spin chain that local observables do not equilibrate to the predictions of the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE). In this work we argue that the breakdown of the GGE can be attributed to the failure of the Generalized Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (GETH), which has been the main candidate to explain the validity of the GGE. We provide explicit counterexamples to the GETH and argue that generally it does not hold in models with multiple particle species. Therefore there is no reason to assume that the GGE should desc…
In their recent Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 4233 (1999)], Salazar and Toral (ST) study numerically a finite Ising chain with non-integrable interactions decaying like 1/r^(d+sigma) where -d <= sigma <= 0 (like ST, we discuss general dimensionality d). In particular, they explore a presumed connection between non-integrable interactions and Tsallis's non-extensive statistics. We point out that (i) non-integrable interactions provide no more motivation for Tsallis statistics than do integrable interactions, i.e., Gibbs statistics remain meaningful for the non-integrable case, and in fact provid…
In this work, we investigate the heat exchange between two quantum systems whose initial equilibrium states are described by the generalized Gibbs ensemble. First, we generalize the fluctuation relations for heat exchange discovered by Jarzynski and Wójcik to quantum systems prepared in the equilibrium states described by the generalized Gibbs ensemble at different generalized temperatures. Second, we extend the connections between heat exchange and Rényi divergences to quantum systems with very general initial conditions. These relations are applicable for quantum systems with conserved quanti…
In integrable many-particle systems, it is widely believed that the stationary state reached at late times after a quantum quench can be described by a generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE) constructed from their extensive number of conserved charges. A crucial issue is then to identify a complete set of these charges, enabling the GGE to provide exact steady state predictions. Here we solve this long-standing problem for the case of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain by explicitly constructing a GGE which uniquely fixes the macrostate describing the stationary behaviour after a general quantum quench. …
We establish a relation between two hallmarks of integrable systems: the relaxation towards the generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE) and the dissipationless charge transport. We show that the former one is possible only if the so called Mazur bound on the charge stiffness is saturated by local conserved quantities. As an example we show how a non--GGE steady state with a current can be generated in the one-dimensional model of interacting spinless fermions with a flux quench. Moreover an extended GGE involving the quasi-local conserved quantities can be formulated for this case.
Using a numerical renormalization group based on exploiting an underlying exactly solvable non- relativistic theory, we study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of a 1D Bose gas (as described by the Lieb-Liniger model) released from a parabolic trap. Our method allows us to track the post-quench dynamics of the gas all the way to infinite time. We also exhibit a general construction, applicable to all integrable models, of the thermodynamic ensemble that has been suggested to govern this dynamics, the generalized Gibbs ensemble. We compare the predictions of equilibration from this ensemble again…
The concept of generalized Gibbs ensembles (GGEs) has been introduced to describe steady states of integrable models. Recent advances show that GGEs can also be stabilized in nearly integrable quantum systems when driven by external fields and open. Here, we present a weakly dissipative dynamics that drives towards a steady-state GGE and is realistic to implement in systems of trapped ions. We outline the engineering of the desired dissipation by a combination of couplings which can be realized with ion-trap setups and discuss the experimental observables needed to detect a deviation from a th…
The Toda chain is the prime example of a classical integrable system with strictly local conservation laws. Relying on the Dumitriu-Edelman matrix model, we obtain the generalized free energy of the Toda chain and thereby establish a mapping to the one-dimensional log-gas with an interaction strength of order 1/N. The (deterministic) local density of states of the Lax matrix is identified as the object, which should evolve according to generalized hydrodynamics. In the current version missing factors of 2 are corrected.
We reconsider the non-equilibrium dynamics of closed quantum systems. In particular we focus on the thermalization of integrable systems. Here we show how the generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE) can be constructed as the best approximation to the time dependent density matrix. Our procedure allows for a systematic construction of the GGE by a constrained minimization of the distance between the latter and the true state. Moreover, we show that the entropy of the GGE is a direct measure for the quality of the approximation. We apply our method to a quenched hard core bose gas. In contrast to the s…
We study the non equilibrium time evolution of an integrable field theory in 1+1 dimensions after a sudden variation of a global parameter of the Hamiltonian. For a class of quenches defined in the text, we compute the long times limit of the one point function of a local operator as a series of form factors. Even if some subtleties force us to handle this result with care, there is a strong evidence that for long times the expectation value of any local operator can be described by a generalized Gibbs ensemble with a different effective temperature for each eigenmode.
In this work, we show that the dissipation in a many-body system under an arbitrary non-equilibrium process is related to the Rényi divergences between two states along the forward and reversed dynamics under very general family of initial conditions. This relation generalizes the links between dissipated work and Renyi divergences to quantum systems with conserved quantities whose equilibrium state is described by the generalized Gibbs ensemble. The relation is applicable for quantum systems with conserved quantities and can be applied to protocols driving the system between integrable and ch…
The construction of the generalized Gibbs ensemble, to which isolated integrable quantum many-body systems relax after a quantum quench, is based upon the principle of maximum entropy. In contrast, there are no universal and model-independent laws that govern the relaxation dynamics and stationary states of open quantum systems, which are subjected to Markovian drive and dissipation. Yet, as we show, relaxation of driven-dissipative systems after a quantum quench can, in fact, be determined by a maximum entropy ensemble, if the Liouvillian that generates the dynamics of the system has parity-t…
We study quenches in integrable spin-1/2 chains in which we evolve the ground state of the antiferromagnetic Ising model with the anisotropic Heisenberg Hamiltonian. For this nontrivially interacting situation, an application of the first-principles-based quench action method allows us to give an exact description of the postquench steady state in the thermodynamic limit. We show that a generalized Gibbs ensemble, implemented using all known local conserved charges, fails to reproduce the exact quench action steady state and to correctly predict postquench equilibrium expectation values of phy…
Using generalized hydrodynamics (GHD), we develop the Euler hydrodynamics of classical integrable field theory. Classical field GHD is based on a known formalism for Gibbs ensembles of classical fields, that resembles the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz of quantum models, which we extend to generalized Gibbs ensembles (GGEs). In general, GHD must take into account both solitonic and radiative modes of classical fields. We observe that the quasi-particle formulation of GHD remains valid for radiative modes, even though these do not display particle-like properties in their precise dynamics. We point…
We propose a Gaussian ensemble as a description of the long-time dynamics of isolated quantum integrable systems. Our approach extends the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE) by incorporating fluctuations of integrals of motion. It is asymptotically exact in the classical limit irrespective of the system size and, under appropriate conditions, in the thermodynamic limit irrespective of the value of Planck's constant. Moreover, it captures quantum corrections near the classical limit, finite size corrections near the thermodynamic limit, and is valid in the presence of non-local interactions. The …
We consider the non-equilibrium dynamics in isolated systems, described by quantum field theories (QFTs). After being prepared in a density matrix that is not an eigenstate of the Hamiltonian, such systems are expected to relax locally to a stationary state. In a presence of local conservation laws, these stationary states are believed to be described by appropriate generalized Gibbs ensembles. Here we demonstrate that in order to obtain a correct description of the stationary state, it is necessary to take into account conservation laws that are not (ultra-)local in the usual sense of QFT, bu…

We study a particle immersed in a heat bath, in the presence of an external force which decays at least as rapidly as $1/x$, for example a particle interacting with a surface through a Lennard-Jones or a logarithmic potential. As time increases, our system approaches a non-normalizable Boltzmann state. We study observables, such as the energy, which are integrable with respect to this asymptotic thermal state, calculating both time and ensemble averages. We derive a useful canonical-like ensemble which is defined out of equilibrium, using a maximum entropy principle, where the constraints are:…
We review the dynamics after quantum quenches in integrable quantum spin chains. We give a pedagogical introduction to relaxation in isolated quantum systems, and discuss the description of the steady state by (gen- eralized) Gibbs ensembles. When then turn to general features in the time evolution of local observables after the quench, using a simple model of free fermions as an example. In the second part we present an overview of recent progress in describing quench dynamics in two key paradigms for quantum integrable models, the transverse field Ising chain and the anisotropic spin-1/2 Hei…
Integrable systems do not obey the strong eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH), which has been proposed as a mechanism of thermalization in isolated quantum systems. It has been suggested that an integrable system reaches a steady state described by a generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE) instead of thermal equilibrium. We prove that a generalized version of the strong ETH holds for noninteracting integrable systems with translation invariance. Our generalized ETH states that any pair of energy eigenstates with similar values of local conserved quantities looks similar with respect to local o…
Our review covers microscopic foundations of generalized hydrodynamics (GHD). As one generic approach we develop form factor expansions, for ground states and generalized Gibbs ensembles (GGE). In the latter case the so obtained results are compared with predictions from GHD. One cornerstone of GHD are the GGE averaged microscopic currents, which can also be obtained through employing form factors. Discussed is a second, completely orthogonal approach based on the availability of a self-conserved current.
We review the recent progress in the understanding of the relaxation of isolated near-integrable quantum many-body systems. Focusing on prethermalization and universal dynamics following a quench, we describe the experiments with ultracold atomic gases that illustrate these phenomena and summarize the essential theoretical concepts employed to interpret them. Our discussion highlights the key topics that link the different approaches to this interdisciplinary field, including the generalized Gibbs ensemble, non-thermal fixed points, critical slowing and universal scaling. Finally, we point to …
