We present an infinite family of Borwein type $+ - - $ conjectures. The expressions in the conjecture are related to multiple basic hypergeometric series with Macdonald polynomial argument.

A conjecture of Borwein asserts that for any positive integers $n$ and $k$, the coefficient $a_{3k}$ of $q^{3k}$ in the expansion of $\prod_{j=0}^n (1-q^{3j+1})(1-q^{3j+2})$ is nonnegative. In this paper we prove that for any $0 \leq k\leq n$, there is a constant $0<c<1$ such that $$a_{3k}+a_{3(n+1)+3k}+\cdots+a_{3n(n+1)+3k}=\frac {2\cdot 3^{n}} {n+1}(1+O(c^n)).$$ In particular, $$a_{3k}+a_{3(n+1)+3k}+\cdots+a_{3n(n+1)+3k}>0.$$
The celebrated (First) Borwein Conjecture predicts that for all positive integers~$n$ the sign pattern of the coefficients of the ``Borwein polynomial'' $$(1-q)(1-q^2)(1-q^4)(1-q^5) \cdots(1-q^{3n-2})(1-q^{3n-1})$$ is $+--+--\cdots$. It was proved by the first author in [Adv. Math. 394 (2022), Paper No. 108028]. In the present paper, we extract the essentials from the former paper and enhance them to a conceptual approach for the proof of ``Borwein-like'' sign pattern statements. In particular, we provide a new proof of the original (First) Borwein Conjecture, a proof of the Second Borwein Con…
Transformation formulas for four-parameter refinements of the q-trinomial coefficients are proven. The iterative nature of these transformations allows for the easy derivation of several infinite series of q-trinomial identities, and can be applied to prove many instances of Bressoud's generalized Borwein conjecture.
Recently, Li obtained an asymptotic formula for a certain partial sum involving coefficients for the polynomial in the First Borwein conjecture. As a consequence, he showed the positivity of this sum. His result was based on a sieving principle discovered by himself and Wan. In fact, Li points out in his paper that his method can be generalized to prove an asymptotic formula for a general partial sum involving coefficients for any prime $p>3$. In this work, we extend Li's method to obtain asymptotic formula for several partial sums of coefficients of a very general polynomial. We find that in …
Given an arbitrary ordered pair of coprime integers (a,b) we obtain a pair of identities of the Rogers--Ramanujan type. These identities have the same product side as the (first) Andrews--Gordon identity for modulus 2ab\pm 1, but an altogether different sum side, based on the representation of (a/b-1)^{\pm 1} as a continued fraction. Our proof, which relies on the Burge transform, first establishes a binary tree of polynomial identities. Each identity in this Burge tree settles a special case of Bressoud's generalized Borwein conjecture.
We denote by $c_t^{(m)}(n)$ the coefficient of $q^n$ in the series expansion of $(q;q)_\infty^m(q^t;q^t)_\infty^{-m}$, which is the $m$-th power of the infinite Borwein product. Let $t$ and $m$ be positive integers with $m(t-1)\leq 24$. We provide asymptotic formula for $c_t^{(m)}(n)$, and give characterizations of $n$ for which $c_t^{(m)}(n)$ is positive, negative or zero. We show that $c_t^{(m)}(n)$ is ultimately periodic in sign and conjecture that this is still true for other positive integer values of $t$ and $m$. Furthermore, we confirm this conjecture in the cases $(t,m)=(2,m),(p,1),(p,…
In 2012 Bryson, Ono, Pitman and Rhoades showed how the generating functions for certain strongly unimodal sequences are related to quantum modular and mock modular forms. They proved some parity results and conjectured some mod 4 congruences for the coefficients of these generating functions. In 2016 Kim, Lim and Lovejoy obtained similar results for odd-balanced unimodal sequences and made similar mod 4 conjectures. We prove all of these mod 4 conjectures and similar congruences for the Andrews spt-function and related mock theta functions. Our method of proof involves new Hecke-Rogers type id…
Recently, Wang and Ma propose a conjecture associated with the possible generalization of Andrews-Warnaar identities. It is confirmed in this paper. As the applications of this conjecture, we prove that a family of series can be expressed by the partial theta functions and construct some new partial theta function identities.
In the context of the (generalized) Delta Conjecture and its compositional form, D'Adderio, Iraci, and Wyngaerd recently stated a conjecture relating two symmetric function operators, $D_k$ and $Θ_k$. We prove this Theta Operator Conjecture, finding it as a consequence of the five-term relation of Mellit and Garsia. As a result, we find surprising ways of writing the $D_k$ operators.
We give a new theta-function identity, a special case of which is utilised to prove Kawanaka's Macdonald polynomial conjecture. The theta-function identity further yields a transformation formula for multivariable elliptic hypergeometric series which appears to be new even in the one-variable, basic case.
Capparelli conjectured two modular identities for partitions whose parts satisfy certain gap conditions, where were motivated by the calculation of characters for the standard modules of certain affine Lie algebras and by vertex operator theory. These identities were subsequently proved and refined by Andrews, who related them to Jacobi theta functions, and also by Alladi-Andrews-Gordon, Capparelli, and Tamba-Xie. In this paper we prove two new companions to Capparelli's identities, where the evaluations are expressed in terms of Jacobi theta functions and false theta functions.
We introduce the family of Theta operators $Θ_f$ indexed by symmetric functions $f$ that allow us to conjecture a compositional refinement of the Delta conjecture of Haglund, Remmel and Wilson for $Δ_{e_{n-k-1}}'e_n$. We show that the $4$-variable Catalan theorem of Zabrocki is precisely the Schröder case of our compositional Delta conjecture, and we show how to relate this conjecture to the Dyck path algebra introduced by Carlsson and Mellit, extending one of their results. Again using the Theta operators, we conjecture a touching refinement of the generalized Delta conjecture for $Δ_{h_m}Δ_{…
Let $(x_1, \dots, x_n, y_1, \dots, y_n)$ be a list of $2n$ commuting variables, $(θ_1, \dots, θ_n, ξ_1, \dots, ξ_n)$ be a list of $2n$ anticommuting variables, and $\mathbb{C}[X_n, Y_n] \otimes \wedge \{Θ_n, Ξ_n\}$ be the algebra generated by these variables. D'Adderio, Iraci, and Vanden Wyngaerd introduced the {\em Theta operators} on the ring of symmetric functions and used them to conjecture a formula for the quadruply-graded $\mathfrak{S}_n$-isomorphism type of $\mathbb{C}[X_n,Y_n] \otimes \wedge \{Θ_n, Ξ_n\}/I$ where $I$ is the ideal generated by $\mathfrak{S}_n$-invariants with vanishing…
Let $\bar{p}(n)$ denote the number of overpartitions of $n$. It was conjectured by Hirschhorn and Sellers that $\bar{p}(40n+35)\equiv 0\ ({\rm mod\} 40)$ for $n\geq 0$. Employing 2-dissection formulas of quotients of theta functions due to Ramanujan, and Hirschhorn and Sellers, we obtain a generating function for $\bar{p}(40n+35)$ modulo 5. Using the $(p, k)$-parametrization of theta functions given by Alaca, Alaca and Williams, we give a proof of the congruence $\bar{p}(40n+35)\equiv 0\ ({\rm mod\} 5)$. Combining this congruence and the congruence $\bar{p}(4n+3)\equiv 0\ ({\rm mod\} 8)$ obtai…
We study the parity of coefficients of classical mock theta functions. Suppose $g$ is a formal power series with integer coefficients, and let $c(g;n)$ be the coefficient of $q^n$ in its series expansion. We say that $g$ is of parity type $(a,1-a)$ if $c(g;n)$ takes even values with probability $a$ for $n\geq 0$. We show that among the 44 classical mock theta functions, 21 of them are of parity type $(1,0)$. We further conjecture that 19 mock theta functions are of parity type $(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2})$ and 4 functions are of parity type $(\frac{3}{4},\frac{1}{4})$. We also give characterizat…
In [Dugan-Glennon-Gunnells-Steingrimsson-2019], the authors introduce tiered trees to define combinatorial objects counting absolutely indecomposable representations of certain quivers, and torus orbits on certain homogeneous varieties. In this paper, we use Theta operators, introduced in [D'Adderio-Iraci-VandenWyngaerd-Theta-2021], to give a symmetric function formula that enumerates these trees. We then formulate a general conjecture that extends this result, a special case of which might give some insight about how to formulate a unified Delta conjecture [Haglund-Remmel-Wilson-2018].
Previously, we proved an identity for theta functions of degree eight, and several applications of it were also discussed. This identity is a natural extension of the addition formula for the Weierstrass sigma-function. In this paper we will use this identity to reexamine our work in theta function identities in the past two decades. Hundreds of results about elliptic modular functions, both classical and new, are derived from this identity with ease. Essentially, this general theta function identity is a theta identities generating machine. Our investigation shows that many well-known results…
Working over various graded Lie algebras and in arbitrary dimension, we express scattering diagrams and theta functions in terms of counts of tropical curves/disks, weighted by multiplicities given in terms of iterated Lie brackets. Over the tropical vertex group, our tropical curve counts are known to give certain descendant log Gromov-Witten invariants. Working over the quantum torus algebra yields theta functions for quantum cluster varieties, and our tropical description sets up for geometric interpretations of these. As an immediate application, we prove the quantum Frobenius conjecture o…
We derive upper and lower bounds on the degree $d$ for which the Lovász $\vartheta$ function, or equivalently sum-of-squares proofs with degree two, can refute the existence of a $k$-coloring in random regular graphs $G_{n,d}$. We show that this type of refutation fails well above the $k$-colorability transition, and in particular everywhere below the Kesten-Stigum threshold. This is consistent with the conjecture that refuting $k$-colorability, or distinguishing $G_{n,d}$ from the planted coloring model, is hard in this region. Our results also apply to the disassortative case of the stochast…
