This paper deals with holomorphic self-maps of the complex projective plane and the algebraic relations among the eigenvalues of the derivatives at the fixed points. These eigenvalues are constrained by certain index theorems such as the holomorphic Lefschetz fixed-point theorem. A simple dimensional argument suggests there must exist even more algebraic relations that the ones currently known. In this work we analyze the case of quadratic self-maps having an invariant line and obtain all such relations. We also prove that a generic quadratic self-map with an invariant line is completely determined, up to linear equivalence, by the collection of these eigenvalues. Under the natural correspondence between quadratic rational maps of $\mathbb{P}^2$ and quadratic homogeneous vector fields on $\mathbb{C}^3$, the algebraic relations among multipliers translate to algebraic relations among the Kowalevski exponents of a vector field. As an application of our results, we describe the sets of integers that appear as the Kowalevski exponents of a class of quadratic homogeneous vector fields on $\mathbb{C}^3$ having exclusively single-valued solutions.
In this paper, we establish several results related to vanishing theorems for Mather-Jacobian multiplier ideals on a Gorenstein projective variety, including an injectivity theorem, a Nadel-type vanishing theorem, a Griffith-type vanishing theorem for vector bundles, and a vanishing theorem for the asymptotic Mather-Jacobian multiplier ideals.
We consider moduli spaces of dynamical systems of correspondences over the projective line as a generalization of moduli spaces of dynamical systems of endomorphisms on the projective line. We obtain the rationality of the moduli spaces. The rationality of the moduli space of degree $(d,e)$ correspondences is obtained from a representation-theoretic projection to the one for the usual dynamical systems of degree $d+e-1$. We also show that the multiplier maps for the fixed points and the multiplier index theorem (Woods Hole formula) are also reduced through the projection and obtain the reduced…
Let $X$ be a projective manifold such that the anticanonical bundle $-K_X$ is nef. We prove that the Albanese map $p: X \rightarrow Y$ is locally isotrivial. In particular, $p$ is a submersion.
We consider the family $\mathrm{MC}_d$ of monic centered polynomials of one complex variable with degree $d \geq 2$, and study the map $\widehatΦ_d:\mathrm{MC}_d\to \widetildeΛ_d \subset \mathbb{C}^d / \mathfrak{S}_d$ which maps each $f \in \mathrm{MC}_d$ to its unordered collection of fixed-point multipliers. We give an explicit formula for counting the number of elements of each fiber $\widehatΦ_d^{-1}\left(\barλ\right)$ for every $\barλ \in \widetildeΛ_d$ except when the fiber $\widehatΦ_d^{-1}\left(\barλ\right)$ contains polynomials having multiple fixed points. This formula is not a recur…
We consider the family $\mathrm{MP}_d$ of affine conjugacy classes of polynomial maps of one complex variable with degree $d \geq 2$, and study the map $Φ_d:\mathrm{MP}_d\to \widetildeΛ_d \subset \mathbb{C}^d / \mathfrak{S}_d$ which maps each $f \in \mathrm{MP}_d$ to the set of fixed-point multipliers of $f$. We show that the local fiber structure of the map $Φ_d$ around $\barλ \in \widetildeΛ_d$ is completely determined by certain two sets $\mathcal{I}(λ)$ and $\mathcal{K}(λ)$ which are subsets of the power set of $\{1,2,\ldots,d \}$. Moreover for any $\barλ \in \widetildeΛ_d$, we give an alg…
In this short note we would like to show how it is possible to use techniques introduced in the theory of local dynamics of holomorphic germs tangent to the identity to study global meromorphic self-maps of the complex projective space. In particular we shall show how a meromorphic self-map of a complex projective space induces a holomorphic foliation of the projective space in Riemann surfaces, whose singular points are exactly the fixed points and the indeterminacy points of the map; and we shall prove three index theorems, relating suitably defined local residues at the fixed and indetermin…
We shortly describe the algorithms behind some of the functions provided by the Macaulay2 package MultiprojectiveVarieties, a package for multi-projective varieties and rational maps between them.
We study the homotopy types of spaces of algebraic (rational) maps from real projective spaces into complex projective spaces. In a previous paper we have shown that the inclusion of the first space into the second one is a homotopy equivalence. In this paper we prove that the homotopy types of the terms of the natural "degree" filtration approximate closer and closer the homotopy type of the space of continuous maps and obtain bounds that describe the closeness of the approximation in terms of the degree. Moreover, we compute the homotopy groups of the spaces in low dimensions.
Let $f(x) \in \mathbb{C}[x]$ of degree $n$. We attach to $f$ a $\mathbb{C}$-vector space $W(f)$ which consists of complex polynomials $p(x)$ of degree at most $n - 2$ such that $f(x)$ divides $f"(x)p(x) - f'(x) p'(x)$. The space $W(f)$ originally appears in Yuri Zarhin's solution towards a problem of dynamics in one complex variable posed by Yu. S. Ilyashenko. In this paper, we show that $W(f)$ is nonvanishing if and only if $q(x)^2$ divides $f(x)$ for some quadratic polynomial $q(x)$. Then we prove $W(f)$ has dimension $(n-1) - (n_1 + n_2 + 2N_3)$ under certain conditions, where $n_i$ is the …
We consider the notion of mixed multiplicities for multigraded modules by using Hilbert series, and this is later applied to study the projective degrees of rational maps. We use a general framework to determine the projective degrees of a rational map via a computation of the multiplicity of the saturated special fiber ring. As specific applications, we provide explicit formulas for all the projective degrees of rational maps determined by perfect ideals of height two or by Gorenstein ideals of height three.
We classify birational maps of projective smooth surfaces whose non-critical periodic points are Zariski dense. In particular, we show that if the first dynamical degree is greater than one, then the periodic points are Zariski dense.
By exploring the consequences of the triviality of the monodromy group for a class of surfaces of which the mixed Hodge structure is pure, we extend results of Miyanishi and Sugie, Dimca, Zaidenberg and Kaliman.
We provide a natural smooth projective compactification of the space of algebraic maps from the projective line to the projective space of dimension n by adding a divisor with simple normal crossings.
In this (mostly) survey article, we give a synopsis of a number of results relating to Brill--Noether theory on curves and metric graphs, together with some speculations about the behavior of one-dimensional linear series on a class of metric graphs that admit decompositions as triples of trees rooted on a common vertex set.
Let $X$ be a projective variety defined over an infinite field, equipped with a line bundle $L$, giving an embedding of $X$ into $\mb{P}^m$ and let $ϕ: X \to X$ be a morphism such that $ϕ^*L \cong L^{\otimes q}, q\geq 2$. Then there exists an integer $r>0$ extending $ϕ^r$ to $\mb{P}^m$.
The Gauss map of a given projective variety is the rational map that sends a smooth point to the tangent space at that point, considered as a point of the Grassmann variety. The present paper aims to generalize a result by H. Kaji on Gauss maps in positive characteristic and establish an interaction with the study of dormant opers, as well as Frobenius-projective structures. We first prove a correspondence between dormant opers on a smooth projective variety $X$ and closed immersions from $X$ into a projective space with purely inseparable Gauss map. By using this, we determine the subfields o…
Consider a rational map from a projective space to a product of projective spaces, induced by a collection of linear projections. Motivated by the the theory of limit linear series and Abel-Jacobi maps, we study the basic properties of the closure of the image of the rational map using a combination of techniques of moduli functors and initial degenerations. We first give a formula of multi-degree in terms of the dimensions of intersections of linear subspaces and then prove that it is Cohen-Macaulay. Finally, we compute its Hilbert polynomials.
The Macaulay2 package Cremona performs some computations on rational and birational maps between irreducible projective varieties. For instance, it provides methods to compute degrees and projective degrees of rational maps without any theoretical limitation, from which is derived a general method to compute the push-forward to projective space of Segre classes. Moreover, the computations can be done both deterministically and probabilistically. We give here a brief description of the methods and algorithms implemented.
According to the decomposition and relative hard Lefschetz theorems, given a projective map of complex quasi projective algebraic varieties and a relatively ample line bundle, the rational intersection cohomology groups of the domain of the map split into various direct summands. While the summands are canonical, the splitting is certainly not, as the choice of the line bundle yields at least three different splittings by means of three mechanisms in a triangulated category introduced by Deligne. It is known that these three choices yield splittings of mixed Hodge structures. In this paper, we…
A theorem of Jannsen asserts that if a smooth projective variety has injective cycle class maps, it has surjective cycle class maps. The object of this note is to present a version of Jannsen's theorem for singular quasi--projective varieties.
Moduli spaces of stable maps to a smooth projective variety typically have several components. We express the virtual class of the moduli space of genus one stable maps to a smooth projective variety as a sum of virtual classes of the components. The key ingredient is a generalised functoriality result for virtual classes. We show that the natural maps from 'ghost' components of the genus one moduli space to moduli spaces of genus zero stable maps satisfy the strong push forward property. As a consequence, we give a cycle-level formula which relates standard and reduced genus one Gromov--Witte…
We construct a new compactification of the moduli space of maps from pointed nonsingular projective stable curves to a nonsingular projective variety with prescribed ramification indices at the points. It is shown to be a proper Deligne-Mumford stack equipped with a natural virtual fundamental class.
We present a generalization of the multiplier ideal version of inversion of adjunction, often known as the restriction theorem, to centers of arbitrary codimension. We approach inversion of adjunction from the subadjunction point of view. Let X be a smooth complex projective variety and let Z be an exceptional log-canonical center of an effective Q-divisor D on some dense open subset of X that contains the generic point of Z. Any subvariety of X can be expressed as such a center for some D. We define an adjoint ideal that measures how non-klt (X, D) is outside the generic point of Z. Our main …
The problem of approximating the infinite dimensional space of all continuous maps from an algebraic variety $X$ to an algebraic variety $Y$ by finite dimensional spaces of algebraic maps arises in several areas of geometry and mathematical physics. An often considered formulation of the problem (sometimes called the Atiyah-Jones problem after \cite{AJ}) is to determine a (preferably optimal) integer $n_D$ such that the inclusion from this finite dimensional algebraic space into the corresponding infinite dimensional one induces isomorphisms of homology (or homotopy) groups through dimension $…
McMullen proved the moduli space of complex rational maps can be parametrized by the spectrum of all periodic-point multipliers up to a finite amount of data, with the well-understood exception of Lattès maps. We generalize his method to large positive characteristic. McMullen's method is analytic; a modified version of the method using rigid analysis works over a function field over a finite field of characteristic larger than the degree of the map. Over a finite field with such characteristic it implies that, generically, rational maps can indeed be parametrized by their multiplier spectra u…
We present a method for computing projective isomorphisms between rational surfaces that are given in terms of their parametrizations. The main idea is to reduce the computation of such projective isomorphisms to five base cases by modifying the parametric maps such that the components of the resulting maps have lower degree. Our method can be used to compute affine, Euclidean and Möbius isomorphisms between surfaces.
We give algorithms for computing with divisors on projective curves over finite fields, and with their Jacobians, using the algorithmic representation of projective curves developed by Khuri-Makdisi. We show that many desirable operations can be done efficiently in this setting: decomposing divisors into prime divisors; computing pull-backs and push-forwards of divisors under finite morphisms, and hence Picard and Albanese maps on Jacobians; generating uniformly random divisors and points on Jacobians; computing Frobenius maps and Kummer maps; and finding a basis for the $l$-torsion of the Pic…
