The electronic structure of anti-ferromagnetic $Cr_{2}As$ is investigated. Anisotropy of exchange interactions between chrome sub-lattices is determined ($J^{X}(Cr_{I}-Cr_{II}) =4.77 meV,J^{Y}(Cr_{I}-Cr_{II}) =-6.36 meV$). The behavior of exchange integrals from magnetic structure is analyzed.
In epitaxial (111) oriented Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$/Fe$_{50}$Mn$_{50}$ bilayers, we separate two distinct behaviors: unidirectional anisotropy (exchange bias) in thick Fe$_{50}$Mn$_{50}$, and enhanced coercivity in thin Fe$_{50}$Mn$_{50}$. By measuring the magnetization response to a rotating magnetic field, we quantitatively determine the relevant anisotropies, and demonstrate that the enhanced coercivity is related to the rotatable magnetic anisotropy of Fe$_{50}$Mn$_{50}$. We also demonstrate the consequences of the anisotropy changes with temperature.
The periodic deviations of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spins from corresponding uniform configurations are shown to be energetically favorable close to a compensated interface of ferromagnetic antiferromagnetic bilayer. The amplitude of the deviations decreases exponentially into the film volumes as a function of a coordinate perpendicular to the interface. The interaction energy is found to be proportional to a square of a scalar product of unit ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic vectors.
CuMnAs with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is proposed as an active material for antiferromagnetic memory. Information can be stored in the antiferromagnetic domain state, while writing and readout can rely on the existence of the surface magnetization. It is predicted, based on first-principles calculations, that easy-axis anisotropy can be achieved in bulk CuMnAs by substituting a few percent of As atoms by Ge, Si, Al, or B. This effect is attributed to the changing occupation of certain electronic bands near the Fermi level induced by the hole doping. The calculated temperature dependenc…
An electric method for measuring magnetic anisotropy in antiferromagnetic insulators (AFIs) is proposed. When a metallic film with strong spin-orbit interactions, e.g., platinum (Pt), is deposited on an AFI, its resistance should be affected by the direction of the AFI N eel vector due to the spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR). Accordingly, the direction of the AFI N eel vector, which is affected by both the external magnetic field and the magnetic anisotropy, is reflected in resistance of Pt. The magnetic field angle dependence of the resistance of Pt on AFI is calculated by consider- ing the …
We demonstrate how shape-induced strain can be used to control antiferromagnetic order in NiO/Pt thin films. For rectangular elements patterned along the easy and hard magnetocrystalline anisotropy axes of our film, we observe different domain structures and we identify magnetoelastic interactions that are distinct for different domain configurations. We reproduce the experimental observations by modeling the magnetoelastic interactions, considering spontaneous strain induced by the domain configuration, as well as elastic strain due to the substrate and the shape of the patterns. This allows …
Magnetic anisotropy phenomena in bimetallic antiferromagnets Mn$_2$Au and MnIr are studied by first-principles density functional theory calculations. We find strong and lattice-parameter dependent magnetic anisotropies of the ground state energy, chemical potential, and density of states, and attribute these anisotropies to combined effects of large moment on the Mn 3$d$ shell and large spin-orbit coupling on the 5$d$ shell of the noble metal. Large magnitudes of the proposed effects can open a route towards spintronics in compensated antiferromagnets without involving ferromagnetic elements.
Antiferromagnetic hexagonal MnTe is a promising material for spintronic devices relying on the control of antiferromagnetic domain orientations. Here we report on neutron diffraction, magnetotransport, and magnetometry experiments on semiconducting epitaxial MnTe thin films together with density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the magnetic anisotropies. The easy axes of the magnetic moments within the hexagonal basal plane are determined to be along $\left<1\bar100\right>$ directions. The spin-flop transition and concomitant repopulation of domains in strong magnetic fields is observed…
The dynamics of antiferromagnets is a current hot topic in condensed matter physics and spintronics. However, the dynamics of insulating antiferromagnets cannot be excited by an electric current, which is a method usually used to manipulate ferromagnetic metals. Here, we propose to use the voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy gradient as an excitation source to manipulate insulating antiferromagnetic textures. We analytically and numerically study the dynamics of an antiferromagnetic skyrmion driven by a magnetic anisotropy gradient. Our analytical calculations demonstrate that such a magnet…
We employ the recently discovered antiferromagnetic tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance to study the behavior of antiferromagnetically ordered moments in IrMn exchange coupled to NiFe. Experiments performed by common laboratory tools for magnetization and electrical transport measurements allow us to directly link the broadening of the NiFe hysteresis loop and its shift (exchange bias) to the rotation and pinning of antiferromagnetic moments in IrMn. At higher temperatures, the broadened loops show zero shift which correlates with the observation of fully rotating antiferromagnetic moments…
We report measurements of antiferromagnetic resonances in the van der Waals easy-axis antiferromagnet CrSBr. The interlayer exchange field and magnetocrystalline anisotropy fields are comparable to laboratory magnetic fields, allowing a rich variety of gigahertz-frequency dynamical modes to be accessed. By mapping the resonance frequencies as a function of the magnitude and angle of applied magnetic field we identify the different regimes of antiferromagnetic dynamics. The spectra show good agreement with a Landau-Lifshitz model for two antiferromagnetically-coupled sublattices, accounting for…
Measurements of coherent electron spin dynamics in Ga(1-x)Mn(x)As/Al(0.4)Ga(0.6)As quantum wells with 0.0006% < x < 0.03% show an antiferromagnetic (negative) exchange bewteen s-like conduction band electrons and electrons localized in the d-shell of the Mn2+ impurities. The magnitude of the s-d exchange parameter, N0 alpha, varies as a function of well width indicative of a large and negative contribution due to kinetic exchange. In the limit of no quantum confinement, N0 alpha extrapolates to -0.09 +/- 0.03 eV indicating that antiferromagnetic s-d exchange is a bulk property of GaMnAs. Measu…
By means of micromagnetic spin dynamics calculations, a quantitative calculation is carried out to explore the mechanism of exchange bias (EB) in ferromagnetic (FM)/compensated antiferromagnetic (AFM) bilayers. The antiferromagnets with low and high Neel temperatures have been both considered, and the crossover from negative to positive EB is found only in the case with low Neel temperature. We propose that the mechanism of EB in FM/compensated AFM bilayers is due to the symmetry broken of AFM that yields some net ferromagnetic components.
This work reports an exchange bias (EB) effect up to room temperature in the binary intermetallic bulk compound Mn3.04Ge0.96. The sample annealed at 700 K crystallizes in a tetragonal structure with ferromagnetic ordering, whereas, the sample annealed at 1073 K crystallizes in a hexagonal structure with antiferromagnetic ordering. The hexagonal Mn3.04Ge0.96 sample exhibits an EB of around 70 mT at 2 K that continues with a non-zero value up to room temperature. The exchange anisotropy is proposed to be originating from the exchange interaction between the triangular antiferromagnetic host and …
In this work, IrMn$_{3}$/insulating-Y$_{3}$Fe$_{5}$O$_{12}$ exchange-biased bilayers are studied. The behavior of the net magnetic moment $Δm_{AFM}$ in the antiferromagnet is directly probed by anomalous and planar Hall effects, and anisotropic magnetoresistance. The $Δm_{AFM}$ is proved to come from the interfacial uncompensated magnetic moment. We demonstrate that the exchange bias and rotational hysteresis are induced by the irreversible switching of the $Δm_{AFM}$. In the training effect, the $Δm_{AFM}$ changes continuously. This work highlights the fundamental role of the $Δm_{AFM}$ in th…
We have put into evidence the existence of an antiferromagnetic coupling between iron epilayers separated by a ZnSe crystalline semiconductor. The effect has been observed for ZnSe spacers thinner than 4 nm at room-temperature. The coupling constant increases linearly with temperature with a constant slope of ~5.5x 10-9 J/m2K. The mechanisms that may explain such exchange interaction are discussed in the manuscript. It results that thermally-induced effective exchange coupling mediated by spin-dependent on and off resonant tunnelling of electrons via localized mid-gap defect states in the ZnSe…
We have investigated the effects of rotating an applied field on the exchange anisotropy in Co/FeMn thin films. When the applied field is initially along the cooling field direction, the longitudinal hysteresis loop has a maximum coercivity and the transverse hysteresis loop is flat, indicating that the exchange field is along the cooling field direction. When the applied field angle is rotated away and then restored to the original field cooling direction, the exchange anisotropy direction has changed. The rotation of the exchange field direction trails the applied field and is hysteretic. Th…
Exchange biased composites of ferromagnetic single-domain Ni nanoparticles embedded within large grains of MnO have been prepared by reduction of Ni$_x$Mn$_{1-x}$O$_4$ phases in flowing hydrogen. The Ni precipitates are 15-30 nm in extent, and the majority are completely encased within the MnO matrix. The manner in which the Ni nanoparticles are spontaneously formed imparts a high ferromagnetic- antiferromagnetic interface/volume ratio, which results in substantial exchange bias effects. Exchange bias fields of up to 100 Oe are observed, in cases where the starting Ni content $x$ in the precur…
We compare GGA+U calculations with available experimental data and analyze the origin of magnetic anisotropies in MnF$_2$, FeF$_2$, CoF$_2$, and NiF$_2$. We confirm that the magnetic anisotropy of MnF$_2$ stems almost completely from the dipolar interaction, while magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy plays a dominant role in the other three compounds, and discuss how it depends on the details of band structure. The latter is critically compared to available optical measurements. The case of CoF$_2$, where magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy strongly depends on $U$, is put into contrast with F…
The influence of the mechanical strain and chemical substitution on the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) of Cr$_2$O$_3$ is studied using first-principles calculations. Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction contributes substantially to MAE by inducing spin canting when the antiferromagnetic order parameter is not aligned with the hexagonal axis. Nearly cubic crystal field results in a very small MAE in pure Cr$_2$O$_3$ at zero strain, which is incorrectly predicted to be negative (in-plane) on account of spin canting. The MAE is strongly modified by epitaxial strain, which tunes the crystal-field s…
The magneto-crystalline anisotropy (MCA) of (Ga,Mn)As films has been studied on the basis of ab-initio electronic structure theory by performing magnetic torque calculations. An appreciable contribution to the in-plane uniaxial anisotropy can be attributed to an extended region adjacent to the surface. Calculations of the exchange tensor allow to ascribe a significant part to the MCA to the exchange anisotropy, caused either by a tetragonal distortion of the lattice or by the presence of the surface or interface.
To identify the possible mechanism of coercivity (Hc) degradation of Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets, we study the roles of the exchange field acting on the 4f electrons in Nd ions and theoretically investigate how the variation of the exchange field affects the values of the magnetic anisotropy constants K1 and K2. We find that, with decreasing exchange field strength, both values decrease as a result of the lower asphericity of the 4f electron cloud, indicating that the local anisotropy constants might become small around the grain boundaries where the exchange fields are decreased owing to the sma…
Magnetic anisotropy in an antiferromagnet (AFM) with inversion symmetry breaking (ISB) is investigated. The magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) resulting from the Rashba spin-orbit and s-d type exchange interactions is determined for two different models of AFMs. The global ISB model, representing the effect of a surface, an interface, or a gating electric field, results in an easy-plane magnetic anisotropy. In contrast, for a local ISB model, i.e., for a noncentrosymmetric AFM, perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) arises. Both results differ from the ferromagnetic case, in which the result fo…
The magnetic characteristics of polycrystalline exchange-biased antiferromagnet/ferromagnet-bilayers are determined by a complex interplay of parameters, describing structural and magnetic properties of the material system, including in particular the grain volume distribution of the antiferromagnet. An ideal characterization of such systems would be a non-destructive determination of the relevant parameters for each individual grain. This is in most cases not feasible, since typical characterization methods do average over larger areas. Here, we show that it is however possible to determine a…
(001) oriented NiO/NiFe bilayers were grown on single crystal MgO (001) substrates by ion beam sputtering in order to determine the effect that the crystalline orientation of the NiO antiferromagnetic layer has on the magnetization curve of the NiFe ferromagnetic layer. Simple models predict no exchange anisotropy for the (001)-oriented surface, which in its bulk termination is magnetically compensated. Nonetheless exchange anisotropy is present in the epitaxial films, although it is approximately half as large as in polycrystalline films that were grown simultaneously. Experiments show that d…
We observe magnetic domain structures of MgO/CoFeB with a perpendicular magnetic easy axis under an electric field. The domain structure shows a maze pattern with electric-field dependent isotropic period. We find that the electric-field modulation of the period is explained by considering the electric-field modulation of the exchange stiffness constant in addition to the known magnetic anisotropy modulation.
We study the phase diagram of spin-1 antiferromagnetic chain with isotropic antiferromagnetic interactions decaying with a power-law $\propto r^{-α}$ ($α\ge 1$) accompanied by modulated single-ion anisotropy. Employing the techniques of the density-matrix renormalization group, effects of long-range interactions and single-ion anisotropy on a variety of correlations are investigated. In order to check the consistency, the fidelity susceptibilities are evaluated across quantum phase transitions. The quantum critical points are faithfully detected and orders of phase transitions are determined. …
The exchange bias (EB) effect was discovered 60 years ago by Meiklejohn and Bean. Meanwhile the EB effect has become an integral part of modern magnetism with implications for basic research and for numerous device applications. The EB effect was the first of its kind which relates to an interface effect between two different classes of materials, here between a ferromagnet and an antiferromagnet. Here we review fundamental aspects of the exchange bias effect.
The AFMR spectra of the NdFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ crystal are measured in a wide range of frequencies and temperatures. It is found that by the type of magnetic anisotropy the compound is an "easy-plane" antiferromagnet with a weak anisotropy in the basal plane. The effective magnetic parameters are determined: anisotropy fields $H_{a1}$=1.14 kOe and $H_{a2}$=60 kOe and magnetic excitation gaps $Δν_1$=101.9 GHz and $Δν_2$=23.8 GHz. It is shown that commensurate-incommensurate phase transition causes a shift in resonance field and a considerable change in absorption line width. At temperatures below…
The exchange bias at ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic interfaces strongly depends upon the state of antiferromagnetic (AF) layer which, due to strong magnetoelastic coupling, is sensitive to mechanical stresses. In the present paper we consider magnetoelastic effects that arise at FM/AF interface due to lattice misfit and magnetic ordering. We show how magnetostriction affects mutual orientation of AF and FM vectors and easy-axis direction in thin AF layer. The results obtained could be used for tailoring exchange biased systems.
Antiferromagnetic (AF) domain walls have recently attracted revived attention, not only in the emerging field of AF spintronics, but also more specifically for offering fast domain wall velocities and dynamic excitations up to the terahertz frequency regime. Here we introduce an approach to nucleate and stabilize an AF domain wall in a synthetic antiferromagnet (SAF). We present experimental and micromagnetic studies of the magnetization reversal in [(Co/Pt)$_{X-1}$/Co/Ir]$_{N-1}$(Co/Pt)$_X$ SAFs, where interface induced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and AF interlayer exchange coupli…
We have employed Soft and Hard X-ray Resonant Magnetic Scattering and Polarised Neutron Diffraction to study the magnetic interface and the bulk antiferromagnetic domain state of the archetypal epitaxial Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$(111)/CoO(111) exchange biased bilayer. The combination of these scattering tools provides unprecedented detailed insights into the still incomplete understanding of some key manifestations of the exchange bias effect. We show that the several orders of magnitude difference between the expected and measured value of exchange bias field is caused by an almost anisotropic in-pl…
We present magnetic and transport properties of PrRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ single crystals which exhibit antiferromagnetic order below T$_{N}$ = 68 K. Well defined anomalies due to magnetic phase transition are observed in magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, and specific heat data. The T$_{N}$ of 68 K for PrRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ is much higher than 5.4 K expected on the basis of de-Gennes scaling. The magnetic susceptibility data reveal strong uniaxial anisotropy in this compound similar to that of PrCo$_{2}$Si$_{2}$. With increasing pressure T$_{N}$ increases monotonically up to T$_N$ = 71.5 K at 22.5 k…
We report the experimental observation of magnetic skyrmion-like states in patterned ferromagnetic nanostructures consisting of perpendicular magnetized Co/Pt multilayer film exchange coupled with Co nanodisks in vortex state. The magnetic force microscopy and micromagnetic simulations show that depending on the magnitude of Co/Pt perpendicular anisotropy in these systems two different modes of skyrmion formation are realized.
The antiferromagnetic (AFM) to ferromagnetic (FM) first order phase transition of an epitaxial FeRh thin-film has been studied with x-ray magnetic circular dichroism using photoemission electron microscopy. The FM phase is magnetized in-plane due to shape anisotropy, but the magnetocrystalline anisotropy is negligible and there is no preferred in-plane magnetization direction. When heating through the AFM to FM phase transition the nucleation of the FM phase occurs at many independent nucleation sites with random domain orientation. The domains subsequently align to form the final FM domain st…
Angular resolved measurements of the exchange bias field and the coercive field are a powerful tool to distinguish between different competing magnetic anisotropies in polycrystalline exchange bias layer systems. No simple analytical model is as yet available, which considers time dependent effects like enhanced coercivity arising from the grain size distribution of the antiferromagnet. In this work we expand an existing model class describing polycrystalline exchange bias systems by a rotatable magnetic anisotropy term to describe grain size correlated effects. Additionally, we performed angu…
The phenomena of exchange anisotropy is well known in terms of static magnetization properties such as enhanced coercivity and magnetization loop shifts. These effects are primarily associated with effective anisotropies introduced into the ferromagnet by exchange coupling with a strongly anisotropic antiferromagnet. These effective anisotropies can be understood as manifestations of a more fundamental exchange induced susceptibility. We show that a consequence of this view is that a class of unusual dynamic effects associated with the exchange susceptibility should also exist. The effects bec…
We report measurements of magnon spin transport in a spinel ferrite, magnesium aluminum ferrite $\mathrm{MgAl_{0.5}Fe_{1.5}O_4}$ (MAFO), which has a substantial in-plane four-fold magnetic anisotropy. We observe spin diffusion lengths $> 0.8$ $\mathrm{μm}$ at room temperature in 6 nm films, with spin diffusion length 30% longer along the easy axes compared to the hard axes. The sign of this difference is opposite to the effects just of anisotropy in the magnetic energy for a uniform magnetic state. We suggest instead that accounting for anisotropy in exchange stiffness is necessary to explain …
We report on the structural, electrical transport, and magnetic properties of antiferromagnetic transition-metal monochalcogenide Cr$_{0.79}$Se. Different from the existing off-stoichiometric compositions, Cr$_{0.79}$Se is found to be synthesised into the same NiAs-type hexagonal crystal structure of CrSe. Resistivity data suggest Cr$_{0.79}$Se to be a Fermi-liquid-type metal at low temperatures, while at intermediate temperatures the resistivity depends sublinearly on the temperature. Eventually, at the elevated temperatures the rate of change of resistivity rapidly decreases with increasing …
A theoretical study is made of the magnetization versus applied field curves of ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic multilayers constructed according to a Fibonacci quasiperiodic sequence. The ferromagnetic films are assumed to have uniaxial anisotropy and are coupled by both bilinear and biquadratic effective exchange. The effects of quasiperiodicity in the magnetic phases are illustrated numerically for Fe/Cr systems.
In RBaCo_{2}O_{5+x} compounds (R is rare earth), a ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic competition is accompanied by a giant magnetoresistance. We study the magnetization of detwinned GdBaCo_{2}O_{5.5} single crystals, and find a remarkable uniaxial anisotropy of Co^{3+} spins which is tightly linked with the chain oxygen ordering in GdO_{0.5} planes. Reflecting the underlying oxygen order, CoO_2 planes also develop a spin-state order consisting of Co^{3+} ions in alternating rows of S=1 and S=0 states. The magnetic structure appears to be composed of weakly coupled ferromagnetic ladders with Isin…
In an effort to understand the low temperature behavior of recently synthesized molecular magnets we present numerical evidence for the existence of a rotational band in systems of quantum spins interacting with nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange. While this result has previously been noted for ring arrays with an even number of spin sites, we find that it also applies for rings with an odd number of sites as well as for all of the polytope configurations we have investigated (tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, icosahedron, triangular prism, and axially truncated icosahedron). …
The stability is analyzed of the equilibrium configurations of a magnetic junction with a free layer that has cubic symmetry and two anisotropy axes in the layer plane. Different variants of the switching between various configurations are considered. A possibility is shown of the substantial lowering of the threshold current density needed for the switching. Numerical simulation is made of the switching dynamics for various configurations.
We investigated an out-of-plane exchange bias system that is based on the antiferromagnet MnN. Polycrystalline, highly textured film stacks of Ta / MnN / CoFeB / MgO / Ta were grown on SiO$_x$ by (reactive) magnetron sputtering and studied by x-ray diffraction and Kerr magnetometry. Nontrivial modifications of the exchange bias and the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy were observed both as functions of film thicknesses as well as field cooling temperatures. In optimized film stacks, a giant perpendicular exchange bias of 3600 Oe and a coercive field of 350 Oe were observed at room temperature…
Antiferromagnetic spintronic devices have the potential to outperform conventional ferromagnetic devices due to their ultrafast dynamics and high data density. A challenge in designing these devices is the control and detection of the orientation of the anti-ferromagnet. One of the most promising ways to achieve this is through the exchange bias effect. This is of particular importance in large scale multigranular devices. Due to the large system sizes, previously, only micromagnetic simulations have been possible, these have an assumed distribution of antiferromagnetic anisotropy directions. …
Antiferromagnetic MnPt exhibits a spin reorientation transition (SRT) as a function of temperature, and off-stoichiometric Mn-Pt alloys also display SRTs as a function of concentration. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy in these alloys is studied using first-principles calculations based on the coherent potential approximation and the disordered local moment method. The anisotropy is fairly small and sensitive to the variations in composition and temperature due to the cancellation of large contributions from different parts of the Brillouin zone. Concentration and temperature-driven SRTs are …
Mn$_2$Au is an important antiferromagnetic (AF) material for spintronics applications. Due to its very high Néel temperature of about 1500 K, some of the basic properties are difficult to explore, such as the AF susceptibility and the exchange constants. Experimental determination of these properties is further complicated in thin films by unavoidable presence of uncompensated and quasiloose spins on antisites and at interfaces. Using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), we have measured the spin and orbital contribution to the susceptibility in the direction perpendicular to the in-plane…
Standing spin waves in a thin film are used as sensitive probes of interface pinning induced by an antiferromagnet through exchange anisotropy. Using coplanar waveguide ferromagnetic resonance, pinning of the lowest energy spin wave thickness mode in Ni(80)Fe(20)/Ir(25)Mn(75) exchange biased bilayers was studied for a range of IrMn thicknesses. We show that pinning of the standing mode can be used to amplify, relative to the fundamental resonance, frequency shifts associated with exchange bias. The shifts provide a unique `fingerprint' of the exchange bias and can be interpreted in terms of an…
The magnetic anisotropy in MgO-capped MnPt films and its voltage control are studied using first-principles calculations. Sharp variation of the magnetic anisotropy with film thickness, especially in the Pt-terminated film, suggests that it may be widely tuned by adjusting the film thickness. In thick films the linear voltage control coefficient is as large as 1.5 and $-0.6$ pJ/Vm for Pt-terminated and Mn-terminated interfaces, respectively. The combination of a widely tunable magnetic anisotropy energy and a large voltage-control coefficient suggest that MgO-capped MnPt films can serve as a v…
Implementation of antiferromagnetic compounds as active elements in spintronics has been hindered by their insensitive nature against external perturbations which causes difficulties in switching among different antiferromagnetic spin configurations. Electrically-controllable strain gradient can become a key parameter to tune the antiferromagnetic states of multiferroic materials. We have discovered a correlation between an electrically-written straight-stripe mixed-phase boundary and an in-plane antiferromagnetic spin axis in highly-elongated La-5%-doped BiFeO$_{3}$ thin films by performing p…
The field-induced transition in one-dimensional S=1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet with single-ion anisotropy in the presence of a transverse magnetic field is obtained on the basis of the Schwinger boson mean-field theory. The behaviors of the specific heat and susceptibility as functions of temperature as well as the applied transverse field are explored, which are found to be different from the results obtained under a longitudinal field. The anomalies of the specific heat at low temperatures, which might be an indicative of a field-induced transition from a Luttinger liquid phase to an ordered…
We analyze and compare the effect of spatial and spin anisotropy on spin conductivity in a two dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg quantum magnet on a square lattice. We explore the model in both the Neel antiferromagnetic (AF) phase and the collinear antiferromagnetic (CAF) phase. We find that in contrast to the effects of spin anisotropy in the Heisenberg model, spatial anisotropy in the AF phase does not suppress the zero temperature regular part of the spin conductivity in the zero frequency limit - rather it enhances it. We also explore the finite temperature effects on the Drude weight in the A…
We discuss the ground state of Benzene dianion (Bz$^{2-}$) on the basis of the numerical diagonalization method of an effective model of $π$ orbitals. It is found that the ground state can be the spin singlet state, and the exchange coupling between LUMOs can be antiferromagnetic.
A topological state with simultaneous nonzero Chern number and spin Chern number is possible for electrons on honeycomb lattice based on band engineering by staggered electric potential and antiferromagnetic exchange field in presence of intrinsic spin-orbit coupling. With first principles calculation we confirm that the scheme can be realized by material modification in perovskite G-type antiferromagnetic insulators grown along [111] direction, where d electrons hop on a single buckled honeycomb lattice. This material is ideal for spintronics applications, since it provides a spin-polarized q…
We present a comprehensive study of the exchange bias effect in a model system. Through numerical analysis of the exchange bias and coercive fields as a function of the antiferromagnetic layer thickness we deduce the absolute value of the averaged anisotropy constant of the antiferromagnet. We show that the anisotropy of IrMn exhibits a finite size effect as a function of thickness. The interfacial spin disorder involved in the data analysis is further supported by the observation of the dual behavior of the interfacial uncompensated spins. Utilizing soft x-ray resonant magnetic reflectometry …
Pronounced anisotropy of magnetic properties and complex magnetic order of a new oxi-halide compound Co7(TeO3)4Br6 has been investigated by powder and single crystal neutron diffraction, magnetization and ac susceptibility techniques. Anisotropy of susceptibility extends far into the paramagnetic temperature range. A principal source of anisotropy are anisotropic properties of the involved octahedrally coordinated single Co(2+) ions, as confirmed by angular-overlap-model calculations presented in this work. Incommensurate antiferromagnetic order sets in at TN=34 K. Propagation vector is strong…
This paper reports our Monte Carlo (MC) studies aiming to explain the experimentally observed paramagnetic molecule induced antiferromagnetic coupling between the ferromagnetic (FM) electrodes. Recently developed magnetic tunnel junction based molecular spintronics devices (MTJMSDs), which were prepared by chemically bonding the paramagnetic molecules between the FM electrodes along the exposed side edges of magnetic tunnel junctions, exhibited molecule induced strong antiferromagnetic coupling. Our MC studies focused on the atomic model analogous to the MTJMSD and studied the effect of molecu…
